July 31st Recap: Joan Rivers as guest host

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

joan-rivers.jpg

Joan Rivers was the guest host on The View today. Joan was funny in her usual way, but her jokes don’t really translate to print well, since much of it is in her delivery. As a result, I won’t be able to fully recap all that she said. During a conversation about women dating younger men, Joan mentioned Ivana Trump who is with a younger man. Barbara Walters told her not to start with Ivana because she had “enough trouble with Donald (Trump) who used to be my friend and I miss him.” Really? Barbara misses Donald?

They talked about whether a child’s behavior should impact a presidential client. Al Gore’s son recently pled guilty to misdemeanor drug charges. Barbara thinks that people’s children should not be why you vote for them. Joy called George Bush’s daughters “the two alcoholic twins” and Elisabeth Hasselbeck shouted “That is so not true!” and then went on to talk about all their volunteer work. Joy said that the point she was trying to make was that while the Bush twins are seen as party girls, Al Gore’s son is seen as troubled. Barbara Walters said that the Bush twins are not party girls and that Joy was being unfair.

Star Jones finally admits to gastric bypass

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

star2.jpg

In the latest issue of Glamour magazine, Star Jones finally admitted what everyone already knew: her drastic weight loss came as a result of a gastric bypass surgery. As for the reason why she did reveal her surgery sooner, she had this to say:

First, I didn’t know if the surgery would work. I had never stuck to a diet or committed to exercise for more than a month, and I had spent my entire adult life telling everyone that I was fine with the way I looked. I also never thought I’d have to explain it. I actually thought that I could say, “None of your business,” and people would say, “OK, she wants to remain private.” If that isn’t evidence of someone not living in truth, I don’t know what is. Everything about me was already so public (mostly my own doing—talk about dumb!), so of course everyone wanted to know what I had done. I was also terrified someone would have a tragic result after emulating me without making an informed decision with her doctor. But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me. I was afraid to be vulnerable, and ashamed at not being able to get myself under control without this procedure.

July 30th Recap: New hosts to be announced this week

Monday, July 30th, 2007

nancygrace.jpg

Nancy Grace was today’s guest host. {Disclaimer: I cannot stand Nancy Grace. My main contention with her is that she convicts people immediately and never leaves open the possibility that a person did not commit a particular offense for which he is a suspect. She is also rude to her guests that she disagrees with.}

Nancy recently got married and is pregnant with twins. She said that she won’t reveal whether she had fertility treatments because “what happens in a woman’s vagina should stay in a woman’s vagina.” (She does know that the babies will have to come out of at some point, though, right?). She also recently broke bones in her foot. Toward the end of the show, she said that she will not become softer or laid back following having the children and will probably even become more vigilant against child predators. She will also not be taking a lengthy maternity leave because “justice never sleeps.”

The View Schedule for July 29-Aug 3

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Here is this week’s schedule for The View, courtesy of ABC.

I am not sure how thorough my recap of Monday’s episode will be, because I will probably spend a lot of it yelling back at Nancy Grace, because I cannot stand her.

MON., JULY 30 - Guest co-host Nancy Grace (CNN Headline News’ “Nancy Grace”); Jason Priestley (”Side Order of Life”); musical guest SugarLand.

TUES., JULY 31 - Guest co-host Joan Rivers; George Lopez (”Balls of Fury”); Alan and Denise Jackson; musical guest Alan Jackson.

WED., AUG. 1 - Jon Voight (”September Dawn”); summer gadgets for kids.

THURS., AUG. 2 - Guest co-host Chelsea Handler (E!’s “Chelsea Lately”); Julia Stiles (”The Bourne Ultimatum”); Zac Efron (”High School Musical 2″ and “Hairspray”).

FRI., AUG. 3 - “The View: Special Edition” - A preview of Fall politics, television, film and fashion from Anderson Cooper (CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″), People, Entertainment Weekly and Nina Garcia (”Project Runway”), respectively; guest co-hosts are both Caroline Rhea and “All My Children” star Melissa Claire Egan.

Sherri Shepherd’s New Website

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Sherri Shepherd has drastically updated her personal website at Sherri Shepherd.com. If she is going to be named a permanent co-host on The View, I suppose it needed to look a little fresher. Most notably, on the front page, one of the pictures of her in the corner is from one of her many guest appearances on The View. Looks like she already feels like she is part of the show.

Whoopi/Sherri Rumors continue

Friday, July 27th, 2007

The LA Times is reporting that Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd have been offered the co-host spots on The View. ABC has yet to make an official announcement. If it is true, I certainly hope that Whoopi adds some pep to her personality because her guest spots were rather dull. If she doesn’t, what is left of the The View audience will be falling asleep…or changing the channel.

July 26th Recap: Martin Sheen and Billy Ray Cyrus

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

dayna.jpg

Dayna Devon, from Extra, was the guest host. She came out onto the stage holding hands with Barbara. She has two children under the age of two. She had them one after the other because her husband told her that her eggs were drying out. Her husband is a plastic surgeon. (Did anyone else find her to be really annoying? I guess it figures, then, that Barbara seemed to like her).

More couples are not having children. Elisabeth wants seven. Barbara wants her daughter to have children because she wants grandchildren.

Hillary Clinton is in the news again because at the debate John Edwards said he did not like her jacket when he was asked to name something he did not like about her. Joy said that the problem is that John is not witty. Elisabeth said that Hillary cannot win, because no matter what she wears, people complain, either because it is too masculine or too feminine. Barbara does not think he was being sexist, but just being flippant.

They then had some (even more) boring topics about whether your weight is determined by the weight of those you spend time with and whether you should sue if someone says something bad about you.

There is a cat at a nursing home in Rhode Island that seems to know when someone is going to die. When it goes over to a person, they die later. Joy said that maybe the cat is killing the people!

July 25th Recap: James Marsden and Cheryl Ladd

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

depandi.jpg

Giuliana DePandi, from E! News, was the guest host on The View on Wednesday. She is engaged to Bill Rancic, the first winner of The Apprentice. She met him when she interviewed him for E!. She is going to take his last name. Guiliani came to the United States from Italy when she was seven.

Barbara and Joy feel bad for Lindsay Lohan. Elisabeth feels bad that she does not have the support system, but stopped feeling bad when she got the behind the wheel of a car drunk and 43,000 people a year are killed by drunk drivers. Giuliana pointed out that Lindsay’s father is an alcoholic and she believes that Lindsay is sick. Elisabeth said that she has the money to hire a driver.

Barbara thought that the segment on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno where Rob Schneider dressed up like Lindsay Lohan was “mean.” Giuliana said it was crossing the line and it is probably difficult for Lindsay because all of her friends use her to get into nightclubs and probably pressure her to go out.

Next they talked about Britney Spears and her latest problems. She did a photoshoot and exclusive interview with Ok! Magazine, who are now saying that Britney was a mess and had a meltdown. She is accused of acting out of it and ruining clothing. There next issue will tell all about the interview. Joy joked that they should call it “Not Ok!” magazine.

Ross Mathews talks View on The Tonight Show

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, Ross “The Intern” Mathews had a segment about his time co-hosting The View. He said that he thought it would be a “match made in heaven,” but he ran into a stumbling block: Barbara Walters. He said that she is “brutally honest” and he doesn’t know if he is “man enough to take it.”

He then showed a funny clip of Joy Behar taking Ross shopping for something to wear on the show. One of the funniest lines was when Ross said that he does not like to wear linen because he feels like a couch. Joy joked that he would be okay, as long as no one sat on his face.

There was a scene where Ross talked with executive producer Bill Geddie before the show and it appeared that Ross was genuinely making him laugh. That further reiterates my earlier reasoning that it was Bill Geddie, and not Barbara Walters, who wanted Ross to guest co-host. That could explain her general unfriendliness toward him.

Right before they went out onto The View stage, Ross asked if Barbara had any words of wisdom for him. She said, “I’d like to tell you to just be yourself, but I hope you won’t be!” He said, “That’s mean!” She then smiled and said “I’m never mean.” Ouch. Even for “trying to be funny” that is rather nasty.
