The View Halloween Episode Recap

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

the-view-halloween.jpg
Today on The View, they had a special Halloween-themed episode. Overall I was not impressed with theme, which was 1930s Cotton Club. Barbara Walters talked about how her father pioneered night clubs like the Latin Quarter. I guess it was a nice idea, but it just did not do anything for me and I was pretty bored.

They started the show with a musical number, where Whoopi was dressed like Cab Calloway and Joy was on a giant swing. Joy looked really bored. I was bored, too, and fast forwarded through the number.

When the ladies all sat at the table, they complained about their outfits. Whoopi wanted to take her wig off, but it was glued on, so she had to wait to the commercial. Sherri said her outfit was too much girdle. Joy said that the fur wrap she was wearing was giving her a hot flash. Barbara made a grand entrance. Anyone else think that she looked like Cruella Da Ville?

Tony Bennett came on and sang and then talked a little. I fast forwarded it again.

John Edward, the psychic, came on the show at the request of Whoopi. Apparently they are good friends. Joy said that she played cards once with John at Whoopi’s house and she beat him. She wondered how he did not know what her hand was. He said that it doesn’t work like that. He then did some readings with people in the audience.

Sherri Shepherd did the jitterbug with Ben Vareen. I thought that she did a good job. Barbara said that it wasn’t really the jitterbug and that she did that dance when she was a kid. Then she danced with Ben a little. I thought that she was trying to steal Sherri’s moment a bit.

They then talked to a few people in the audience and showed off their costumes. In the audience were original dancers from The Latin Quarter.

Rosie O’Donnell on Martha Stewart Recap

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

rosie-odonnell-as-queen.jpgRosie O’Donnell was on The Martha Stewart Show today for the Halloween episode. Rosie was dressed as Queen Elizabeth and Martha was a golden goddess. Rosie spoke in a British accent on and off and it was funny how Martha did not seem to be paying much attention to what Rosie was saying. Rosie even mentioned that she could say whatever she wanted and Martha will just continue on talking about the crafts or the decorations. Rosie also said that she thought that Martha was not listening to her. I think that Martha just does not know how to interact in a comedic way.

Martha made a comment that they wanted Rosie to be on the show permanently, but that they could not afford her. Rosie said that she could have had her for the “View rate,” and told the audience that she wanted to do a show with Martha before she did The View. She said that when Martha “got out of the clink” she suggested that they do a show together, but Martha declined.

rosie-odonnell-martha-stewart.jpg

Martha and Rosie then did a craft from Rosie’s new book Crafty U, which has craft ideas that families can do together. They glued candy wrappers onto light switch plates and then decoupaged them using Martha Stewart sealing glue.

Rosie’s Broadway Kids performed “This Joint is Jumpin’.” Rosie and Martha checked out the various costumes in the audience and Rosie tried to convince Martha to give the people free things, but she did not want to. Rosie said that it was obviously not her show. Rosie had Martha hug a woman who was a big fan of hers and Martha did so, but looked rather awkward. I don’t think that personal interaction is her strong suit.

Rosie joked that she would have gone on other shows, but they would have asked her about the book, so she decided to come on Martha instead.

Today on The View is the Halloween special. I will post the recap later tonight. In the meantime, feel free to comment on your thoughts in the comment section of this post.

The photo above is from The View Halloween special in 2003. Joy Behar is dressed as Joan Crawford and Barbara Walters is Marilyn Monroe. Joy said previously that Barbara drove everyone crazy with her Marilyn impression and her repeated singing of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.”

The View October 30th Recap: Merry Miller, David Foster and Tim Daly

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

tim-daly.jpgToday on The View, the guest host was Merry Miller, who is well-known for an interview with Holly Hunter went awry. I posted about this previously and you can see the video of incident at this post. She said that she had never done a satellite interview before and did not know where to look and could not hear Holly.

Merry said that her doctor told her that she should consider freezing embryos because she is getting older and is not married. She discovered several girlfriends did that back in their early 30s. Sherri has three embryos frozen. She is not going to give the embryos away and they will stay there “until Jesus comes” or she decides to have more children.

People are paying $250 to bring a pet back to life. Sherri said if the animal is ill, you should just let them go. Joy talked about one elderly cat who the vet wanted to give an MRI to, even though it was very sick and unable to breathe. Whoopi said that if her cat Oliver was ill, she would not drag out his laugh, because he would not like to live that way.

Merry said that she wants to stop biting her nails. Whoopi said the next time she goes to do it, she should think about everything that she touched that day. Unless she cleaned her nails with a nail brush, her nails are not clean.

The View October 29th Recap

Monday, October 29th, 2007

kaley-cuoco.jpgBarbara Walters was in Los Angeles last week doing interviews for her “10 most fascinating people” special on in December. She also did an interview with Terri Irwin, the wife of the late Steve Irwin, which will air on 20/20.

{There was then a spider on the table and Sherri freaked out a little and she and Barbara got up from the table. Whoopi used her cards to put hand the spider to an off-camera person.}

Barbara went to The Ivy for lunch after the 20/20 interview. She was surprised by all of the paparazzi there, but was gracious to all of them. She was then on a “tabloid show,” which I am assuming was the TMZ show, which had a segment about her with footage from that day. She said that they were very mean to her, showing clips of bad interviews that she has done, etc.

Barbara spoke with Elisabeth Hasselbeck this morning. Elisabeth is having trouble adjusting to life in Arizona and Grace is not sleeping.

Sherri Shepherd came to the studio at 5:00 a.m. because she forgot a DVD she needed to watch for the show. She was not wearing a wig or bra, and was in pajamas. The guard did not want to let her in. Whoopi joked that she should have just shown him her boobs and he would have recognized her. Sherri said that no one wants to see her boobs without a bra.

Recap of Joy Behar on Martha Stewart

Friday, October 26th, 2007

collage-halloween-masks.jpgJoy Behar appeared on The Martha Stewart Show today to promote her book When you Need a Lift. Martha asked Joy three things that she could do to feel better because she is not having a good day. Joy recommended, “Sex, constant sex.” Also, because Martha watches what she eats, she would go out and “have a great meal and just become an alcoholic today.” Martha said, “I just can’t lose myself in drink. It’s just not me.” Joy responded, “Oh, I can!”

Martha said that she does not have any bad habits. She hates shopping because she does not want wait in line. Joy didn’t believe that Martha had to wait in line at a store.

Martha asked Joy about her new co-hosts and Joy said that they are having a “very, very, fun time.” Martha said that Sherri is so funny and thought she was great when she came on her show a few weeks ago. Joy said that Sherri is sweet, quick, and lovely.

Martha and Joy then made a mask to wear to a masked ball. If you want to make one for yourself, Martha’s website has all of the directions.

While they were crafting, Martha said that Joy’s former co-host Rosie O’Donnell would love this project. Joy said that Rosie is a “craft freak.” Martha said that Rosie loves decoupage, probably because she can just put glue everywhere. Joy said that she went to Rosie’s art show the other night. Joy said, “Wow, those paintings are nutsy!” She added that the paintings are very interesting and that Rosie is a “very talented girl.”

During the “questions from the audience” segment, Joy said that people would be most surprised to learn that she is very domestic. Joy said that she goes to flea markets a lot, but now she has too much stuff.

I saw an advertisement during the show that Rosie O’Donnell will be on The Martha Stewart Show next Wednesday for her Halloween special.

The View October 26th Recap: Deborah Norville and Bob Saget

Friday, October 26th, 2007

bob-saget.jpgSamantha Harris of Dancing with the Stars returned again today to guest host on The View. Whoopi said that she is going to watch the show to see what it is that everyone is talking about. Joy Behar said that she used to be good at the Lindy Hop, although she wouldn’t go for the getting lifted in the air.

Deborah Norville, a guest today, has written a book called Thank You Power. She thinks that anger can poison your system. Joy said that some mean, rotten people live a long time. Sherri Shepherd said that some people are so hard to be around when they are so miserable and it can consume you.

Joy asked whether you should forgive everything. For example, should people who were in concentration camps during Hitler’s reign forgive the Nazis? Whoopi said that they should because when there is nationalism in a country it is easy to fall into pace with everyone else who is saying “It’s them, we have to stop them.” She said that we have seen similar things in our country, judging people by what they wear on their head, for example. Whoopi said that she has been a victim and she has forgiven or else you cannot move on. Joy said that she would rather be dead than forgive people who had done that to her. Whoopi said that is why Nelson Mandela is one of her heroes because he was able to move on past what was done to him and other Blacks in South Africa.

Joy Behar on Martha Stewart tomorrow

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

joy-behar-on-martha-stewart.jpgJoy Behar will guest on The Martha Stewart Show on Friday. Here is what to expect, from the Martha website:

The hilarious Joy Behar (”The View”) is back to chat about her new book, “When You Need a Lift,” and to collage one-of-a-kind Halloween masks perfect for adding a unique twist to any costume.

In the clip on the website, while they are crafting, Martha actually mentions Rosie O’Donnell, which is interesting given that they appear to intentionally not speak her name on The View these days. Thanks to Watching The View reader Ken for the heads-up!

The View October 25th Recap: Julianne Moore, Dancing with the Stars

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

julianne-moore.jpgSamantha Harris, Dancing with the Stars host and E! News correspondent appeared as guest host on The View today. She just had a baby one month ago, a daughter called Joceyln Sidney (not sure if that is the spelling). She has to be away from the baby for 36 hours, so she had to “pump and dump” her breast milk on airplane. Joy said that when her daughter was an infant, Joy would lactate when the baby cried, even if she was out of the state.

Joy said that Dancing with the Stars has a curse on it, naming off some of the things that have gone wrong with stars of the show: Marie Osmond passed out, Jennie Garth tripped, Jane Seymour’s mother died, Sara Evans had marital problems, Jennifer Lopez (who guest performed this week) had her grandmother die.

Samantha said that she believes that the show gives people a great career boost. She said that Marie did not fake passing out and that Marie has fainted on TV before. Marie blamed it on allergies and the smoke from the fires. Samantha mentioned that Marie Osmond has a series of videos with Dancing with the Stars scenes acted out with dolls. Check it out here if you are interested. They are pretty cute.

Merry Miller co-hosting October 30th

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

ABC has announced that Merry Miller will be co-hosting on The View on October 30th.

Here is the description given in a press release:

Merry Miller, who conducted an unintentionally funny satellite interview on ABC News Now with Oscar winning actress Holly Hunter (which became one of the most talked about and watched videos on YouTube) will co-host ABC’s “The View,” Live, Tuesday, October 30, 11:00am-12:00 noon, ET on the ABC Television Network.

After reading that description, I went to YouTube to find the video and it was not as interesting as the description let on. Am I missing something? What made this so popular? Maybe I am just used to watching my local news folks interview people and be a little awkward with the questioning?  I also think that satellite interviews are always awkward because of the timing.
See it for yourself:

The View October 24th Recap: George Carlin and James Lipton

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

james-lipton.jpgKassie DePaiva sat in as guest host today, in this first day of Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s maternity leave. Joy Behar was back after missing yesterday due to a cold.

The first topic today was the fires in California. Whoopi Goldberg thinks that it is irritating that the reporters are “up in people’s faces” asking them how it feels to have their house burned down and asking them what they wished they would have taken that they did not.

Kassie said that her sister was evacuated and she has other family that almost needed to be evacuated. Sherri thinks that the reporters should ask them if there is anything they can do for them. Kassie said that our culture loves to feed on people in distress and exploit it. Joy Behar said that this is the largest evacuation in American history since the Civil War.

The Lieutenant Governor of California said that President Bush coming to the State is all about public relations and he does not even want the president to come because it takes away from the hard work of the firefighters. He suggested that the President bring the National Guard back from Iraq to help. Some media people thought that comment was inappropriate because it politicizes a situation that is not about politics. Kassie said that maybe it is in bad taste, but we need help here. She said that if we don’t have the resources here, then we need to bring them back.
