The View February 19th Recap: Terry O’Quinn and Herbie Hancock

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

john-locke-terry-oquinn.jpg Today on The View Whoopi Goldberg showed off a shorter hairstyle. She also wore a shirt that said “Guardian,” but did not explain what it meant.

Fidel Castro has resigned as leader of Cuba. Whoopi said that they should wait until tomorrow to discuss it because the Barbara Walters is on the show then and she knows him.

Sherri Shepherd was excited about the finale of Dance War last night. Team Bruno won. They announced the new cast of Dancing with the Stars on the finale last night.

Hillary Clinton said that Barack Obama is not using his own words in his speeches. Barack used part of a speech from his friend, the governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick. Elisabeth said that most politicians have speech writers, so people often aren’t using their own words. Sherri said that he has given credit to Patrick before, so it is not as big of a deal. Joy said that he has written two books before, so he is not an amateur writer and he could write his own speeches. Elisabeth said, “Then why doesn’t he?” Joy then said, in defense of the Clinton campaign, that Barack is basing his campaign on the fact that he is a brilliant speaker, so it should be his own words. Whoopi asked if he is saying he is a brilliant speaker or if other people are saying that about him? She then said that when you give these speeches, you will take from other people. Joy said that if you are going to lift a speech, do one from the last century, not a few years ago.

The View February 18th Recap: Kids Themed Show

Monday, February 18th, 2008

emily-osment.jpgToday’s episode of The View was “kids themed” because it is a holiday and the kids are home from school. The audience had lots of children in it. Whoopi Goldberg said that she is feeling better after being out sick last week.

The first topic was “baby talk” and whether you speak to children that way. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she didn’t speak to her kids that way, preferring to speak normal words. She heard that it was the higher pitch that is important so that they can hear it. Sherri Shepherd was excited to speak baby talk with her son, but doesn’t do it anymore. Joy uses baby talk with her dogs, but can’t remember what she did with her daughter. Whoopi never used baby talk with her daughter because she didn’t want her to repeat it back to her.

Joy said that some people talk too much to their children. She says they should shut up. Elisabeth said that she talks all the time to her children, like telling Taylor that we are putting the right sleeve on and then the left. Joy said it is too much and if she were the child then it would drive her crazy. Whoopi said parents often go overboard, telling the child in detail that they will be going to the opera and who they will be going with and that they don’t know what you are talking about and you should not expect them to understand everything you say.

    Friday, February 15th, 2008

martha-stewart.jpg I was unable to see the first few minutes of today’s episode of The View, due to a local press conference being aired on my ABC affiliate regarding the shooting that happened yesterday at Northern Illinois University.

When the show resumed, they were talking about what they do to improve their mood. Barbara Walters said that if you smile a lot you will feel better. Whoopi Goldberg said that she worries about the bugs if she is smiling too much. Sherri Shepherd said that she naturally smiles a lot.

A new poll says that people’s spending judgment goes out the window when they are blue. Elisabeth said that she spends when she is blue, but only buys little things like gum and sample sizes. Sherri said that she is a shopaholic and got into a lot of debt by buying things at the mall. Whoopi said that she gets crazy buying books and art.

A recent speed-dating event brought together very wealthy older women (over 35, $500,000+ income a year or $4 million in assets) and younger men (under 35 years old). Sherri said that what kind of happiness can you have if you have to put up money for it? Joy said that it is not about happiness and Whoopi said it was about getting the service to meet the younger men.

The View February 14th: Michael Emerson and Kathleen Turner

    Thursday, February 14th, 2008

michael-emerson.jpgToday on The View, Whoopi Goldberg was absent due to “a little upset stomach.” The beagle that won the Westminster Dog Show, “Uno,” came out onto the stage. (Such a cute dog!) The trainer said that he is “the people’s dog” and that is why he has gotten the kind of response that he did. He is the kind of dog that you can picture sitting on the couch in your own home. Joy said that she was upset because her dog Max was turned away from the show because he was a mixed breed. That was the inspiration for her children’s book. Barbara asked if Uno had a “love interest” and offered her own dog as an option.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck was wearing a Valentine’s Day heart-covered shirt. Joy said that she couldn’t wear it in Saudi Arabia because people are not allowed to wear red or celebrate the day. In New York City health department are handing out free condoms, using the slogan “Get Some.” Elisabeth said that the slogan should be “Get Smart” about protecting yourself. Joy said that slogan is supposed to attract people and it is not a terrible thing because it will encourage people to use condoms. Elisabeth said that it might cause young people to have sex before they are ready because they think they are safe. Barbara said that if they want to have sex they will find away and they should find a way with the condom. Sherri said that they are having sex without the condom, so it will only help. Joy said that they had condom vending machines all over France because they are admitting that they have sex.

    Sherri Shepherd on Entertainment Tonight

    Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Sherri Shepherd was interviewed by Entertainment Tonight, where she discussed her fertility issues and her son Jeffrey. She reveals that she was originally pregnant with twins, but had a miscarriage and lost one of them. She also talks about Jeffrey’s struggles to survive after being born prematurely. To watch a clip of the interview, head here.

The View February 12th Recap: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charles S. Dutton

    Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

sarah-michelle-gellar.jpgElisabeth Hasselbeck was not on The View today, but she will be back tomorrow. It sounded like maybe Whoopi Goldberg was going to explain her absence, but Barbara Walters cut in and said that she would take Elisabeth’s point of view today and counter everything that Joy said.

The first topic was whether the media’s “love for Obama” is hurting Hillary Clinton. Joy Behar said, “Yes.” A study shows that Fox News has been more favorable to her campaign than MSNBC. Joy said that MSNBC has been saying a lot of things against her and negative things about women. Joy joked “when we become more balanced than MSNBC, that’s trouble.” Barbara said that Obama is a “very attractive fellow” and the press love him and have had a lot of the Clintons. Joy said it is not fair because it is open season to call her a “bitch,” pointing out that the media never got on McCain when someone asked him “How do we beat the bitch,” and he kind of laughed it off. Joy said that she should not lose because of misogyny, but because she is not the better candidate, if that is the case.

The View February 11th Recap: Day of Hot Topics

    Monday, February 11th, 2008

barbara-walters-icg.jpg Barbara Walters returned from California where she was taping her Oscar Special. She revealed that the guests on her special will be Miley Cyrus (seriously?), Ellen Page from Juno, Vanessa Williams, and Harrison Ford. It will precede the Oscars in most markets, but will follow the Oscars on the west coast.

Barbara wanted to know what Chelsea Clinton said to all of them when she called them last week on Super Tuesday. She didn’t specifically tell them to vote for her mom, but she did advocate for her mom and she talked with Sherri about health care, saying that she was proud of her mom because she talked about health care before it was “in” to talk about it. Elisabeth and Chelsea have been playing phone tag. There was even a story on an Italian newspaper that Chelsea called the ladies.

A commenter at MSNBC, David Shuster, said that Chelsea was being “pimped out” for the campaign because she made calls on her mom’s behalf. He has been suspended for the comments. Hillary wrote a letter to NBC implying he should be more than suspended. Barbara said that sometimes people say things on live television that comes out wrong and they should let it go because he has been suspended and apologized. Elisabeth said that she doesn’t blame Hillary for going after him as a mother, but that people make mistakes.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd featured on New Kids website

    Saturday, February 9th, 2008

nkotb.jpgNo doubt this will be a happy day for View host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. The New Kids on the Block updated their website again to feature a video which is a montage of various news media discussing the rumors of their comeback.

Among the clips is the one of Elisabeth expressing her excitement at that prospect. Later in the montage they also show a clip of when Elisabeth and Sherri Shepherd sang part of “Hangin’ Tough.” They didn’t show Elisabeth’s attempt to dance, however.

    Check out the video here.

The View February 8th Recap: Rob Lowe

    Friday, February 8th, 2008

rob-lowe.jpgThe first topic on The View was that Mitt Romney has suspended his campaign. He spent a lot of his own money on the campaign. Joy joked that his wife looked “stunned” most of the time and like she was on medication and now she knows why. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that Romney’s wife has MS and is actually treating it holistically and without medication. Elisabeth thinks that a McCain/Huckabee ticket would be interesting. Whoopi said especially if it against Clinton/Obama ticket. Elisabeth said it would be a tough ticket to beat. Whoopi joked that they could rule together like the Fantastic Four.

Clinton and Obama have both missed over 100 votes. Whoopi said that they need to be taking care of their jobs and doing the campaign in their spare time. Joy said that it is important if it is a crucial vote. John McCain missed the crucial vote regarding the stimulus package. The Democrats wanted to add money for seniors and veterans. Elisabeth said that she talked with a spokesperson for McCain and said that he would have voted “no” anyway and it wouldn’t have passed. Sherri got a “legislation for dummies” book which is meant for kids and she learned about adding things on to the bills. Elisabeth said it is a misconception that Republicans don’t care about veterans or old people, especially because the leading candidate is a veteran. Sherri added, “And he’s old!”

The View February 7th Recap: Gary Dourdan and Iron Chef Cat Cora

    Friday, February 8th, 2008

gary-dourdan.jpgWhoopi Goldberg started The View telling the people in the south affected by the tornadoes on Tuesday night that everyone’s thoughts and prayers were with them.

Chelsea Clinton called Elisabeth Hasselbeck Thursday morning while she was getting ready for work. She missed her call, but Chelsea left her a message asking her to call if she had any questions and maybe should could consider supporting her mom down the road. Elisabeth said that she would love to support Hillary Clinton down the line because she would love to have a woman in the White House, if only Hillary would “tweak” some of her policies. The Huffington Post criticized The View because when they did their impression of Chelsea their voices were “drippy.” Joy said that they were not making fun of her, they were just saying that she came off as shy.

Joy went to a Friars Club event where she dedicated a room named after Lucille Ball. It is the first time that a woman was named after a woman and they only did it after Joy “made a stink” about it. Joy was the first woman to be a “roast master” at the club.

We’re in the Project Blog finale!

    Friday, February 8th, 2008

fireworks.jpgWe have made it into the finale of Project Blog! And I say “we” because I could not have gotten here without all of your votes and support.

I will be going up against Mark of Get Incensed.

Here are the details of the final project, which is due one week from today:

For the final challenge, players will have to make a “sneeze page” using a free Blogger blog. They don’t have to create an entire blog, but they ARE responsible for design and layout! The sneeze page will link to their best blog posts, so essentially, we’re getting a “best of the best” webpage devoted to their blog. Can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!

Contestants will have ONE WEEK to create their sneeze page style Blogger blog. So, I’ll need their links by Friday, February 15 at noon! Voting will NOT open until then, even if the contestants send in their links early, but it will remain open until Wednesday, February 20 at noon. Whoever lands higher in the reader voting will get THREE points added to their final score. Good luck bloggers!

I have already gotten started on the project, but thought that I should get some input from all of you. What do you consider to be your favorite posts on Watching the View?
