Here are some video clips of today’s episode of the behind the scenes at The View, for those of you who missed it.
Here is The View schedule for June 2nd through June 6th, subject to change:
MONDAY, JUNE 2 – “A Day of Real Life Hot Topics” with guests including Salman Rushdie (author, “The Enchantress of Florence”), Joshua Packwood (Valedictorian of Morehouse College), Ed Miller (“American’s Most Wanted Criminals”), David Cay Johnston (author, “Free Lunch”).
TUESDAY, JUNE 3 – Colin Firth (“When Did You Last See Your Father?”), Lesley Ann Warren (“In Plain Sight”).
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4 – Denis and Ann Leary (author, “Outtakes From A Marriage”), Christine Baranski and Mary McCormack (Broadway’s “Boeing, Boeing”).
THURSDAY, JUNE 5 – Tom Bergeron (“Supper Club”), Patti LuPone (Broadway’s “Gypsy”).
FRIDAY, JUNE 6– Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City: The Movie”), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Accidental Husband”).
Today’s episode of The View was a behind the scenes look at the episode that air this past Monday, which featured Ali and Dina Lohan and Ryan Cabrera.
Overall, I was not that enthused with the episode. I thought that Executive Producer Bill Geddie played up to the camera too much and got sick of seeing him. I realized that show is even more controlled than I thought. During the interview segment, they actually told Sherri which question to ask next and all of the questions were written by the producers and asked of the guests prior to their apperance on the show. I guess that is how they do things on shows like this, but I was surprised that nothing seems spontaneous at all, even the jokes in hot topics were written ahead of time by the writing staff.
I liked how Joy called the show out on the fact that they had a breakfast spread in the in make-up room, even though they never do that. I think they were trying to make it seem like they do that all time. I also liked the producer who did the Whoopi Weighs In segment. I cannot remember her name, but she seemed very real and not as impressed with herself as the some of the other producers appeared to be.
Remember a few weeks ago on my podcast where I talked about the young male who was on the show briefly who they said was one of the researchers for the hot topics and I hoped he was part of a team that included women as well? From this show it looked like he was the only one researching potential hot topics and he did just as I thought: went on the internet and looked for what was popular on the gossip and news sites and took that as the hot topics. I really wish I could have that job because I think that I would be able to come up with something better than Obama thongs.
For those of you who watched the episode, what did you think?
The View, Sherri Shepherd, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Bill Geddie, Dina Lohan, Ali, Lohan, Ryan Cabrera
Here is a video of the cuddle-induced fall that Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck had on The View this morning when guest Mario Catone joked that the only way they would win a Daytime Emmy was if they were lesbians.
Today the first topic on The View was how Whoopi Goldberg went to see “August Osage County” and “In the Heights.” The cast of “In the Heights” is on the show to perform today. Sherri Shepherd said that she went to see “In the Heights,” using an accent which Joy said sounded like Rosie Perez. Whoopi said that stage is evolving like the country is and there are young African-Americans and young Hispanic people on stage.
Susan Sarandon said that she will leave the country if John McCain becomes president. Joy said that she is going to move to Tuscany, which is not really a sacrifice. Elisabeth said that she doesn’t understand how you can hate a candidate more than you love the country and people are trying to get into the country everyday. Joy said that we are blocking them every step of the way, but they are trying and taking swimming lessons. Sherri said it is just a show of how frustrated Susan is by the situation. Elisabeth said that she wouldn’t leave the country if Obama or Clinton were elected. Whoopi said that people say things when they are upset and she was frustrated when George Bush was elected and wanted to leave. She said that in other countries you don’t have the freedoms you have here, though. Elisabeth said that you can have a say in your government. Whoopi said that if you see the movie Recount, you will doubt that. Joy said that McCain cannot be any worse than Bush. Elisabeth said that McCain is different than Bush and will be a great president. Elisabeth agrees with McCain that the surge works, but believes we made mistakes in the war. She said that McCain took one photo with Bush, but has disagreed with him on the handling of the war and other issues. Whoopi said that McCain took a stand when he had different views on immigration.

Today’s recap will not be up until later. Today’s scheduled guests are Joan Rivers and Kirk Cameron. Feel free to leave your thoughts on today’s episode here.
They started the day on The View talking about what they did for Memorial Day weekend (yesterday’s show was prerecorded). Joy Behar gave money to a man collecting for veterans. The man was a Vietnam Vet who suffers from Agent Orange exposure and said that he hasn’t voted since Vietnam because he doesn’t trust politicians. He also said that America never wins a war against people who don’t wear uniforms. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said Memorial Day is a thankful day, in addition to hearing sad stories. She said that we can’t thank them enough for their service. Sherri Shepherd wanted to hug all the sailors in town for Fleet week, but settled for saying “thank you” to all of them.
Elisabeth had a “staycation” and went to the park. Her fun was interrupted by a “1000 year old man in a black speedo” who chose to sunbathe near them. Sherri went to see her friend sing at Carnegie Hall. She had never been to the opera and she fell asleep. Joy told her to watch Raging Bull and she can hear the beautiful arias from operas. Whoopi told Sherri said that it was a concert piece, but not a full opera.
Sherri Shepherd announced that she will be co-hosting the Daytime Emmy Awards with soap star and former Dancing with the Stars contestant Cameron Mathison. Cameron came out on stage and the audience screamed like crazy. The ceremony will be on June 20th. Sherri asked Whoopi if she had any advice. She told them that the people in the audience want to know who won and it is their show, so to keep it moving. Elisabeth said that Cameron and Sherri should do a dance number on stage.

Since I did not do a comprehensive recap of the Dina Lohan/Ali Lohan appearance on The View, here is video of the segment.

Since it is Memorial Day and I would rather be enjoying my rare day off than recap The View, here is a mini-recap. (It was pre-recorded)
The Hot Topics (not necessarily in this order. I am doing it from memory rather than as the show is happening):
* Barbara Walters called in to talk about how wonderfully her book tour is going.
* You can buy thongs with the presidential candidates’ names on them.
* Elisabeth Hasselbeck wants to ban low-rise underwear for toddlers.
* One woman had sex with her husband every day for a year for a birthday gift to him. (Sherri said she would want to try it, no one else wanted to. Whoopi told Sherri that she (Sherri) might change her mind in the future when she dries up. Whoopi thought they would edit that out, but they didn’t)
* I feel like there were some others, but they were obviously not memorable because now, 10 minutes after watching the show I can’t remember them.
Dina and Ali Lohan, mother and sister to Lindsay Lohan appeared to talk about their new reality show. Dina said that she is just an ordinary suburban mom and that they did the show to show how normal they are and to stop all the rumors about them. Ali wants to be a singer and the press is already treating her negatively and she is only 14. Joy asked Dina how she responds to people who think it is absurd that Dina won an award for being a good mother. Dina said that it was from a group of regular moms and she is one, so it is not weird. Joy asked her about how she reportedly went out drinking with Lindsay when she was underage and Dina said that as her manager she would accompany Lindsay to events that she was working which were at clubs. (I would have asked a follow-up that why, as her manager, would you book her at events at night clubs when she was underage and had a drinking problem).
Whoopi weighed-in and only lost two pounds or so in the last month. She has lost almost 18 inches throughout her body since she started the whole thing.
Ryan Cabrera came on a sang “Enemies” off of his new album, which he financed himself so he could do it they way he wanted. His new girlfriend, Riley, is the granddaughter of Elvis Presley.
We will have to live through this extremely boring episode again on Friday, where the show documents the behind-the-scenes-making of it.
Today on The View Whoopi Goldberg said that this is Fleet Week in New York City and suggested that is the way Sherri could get a little something-something. Sherri said that is not good because a sailor would be out to sea a lot. Joy said that they are too young for her, so Whoopi suggested an officer.
Joy said that on screen Harrison Ford is the perfect man, added that when he cracks that whip “ooh baby.” Whoopi said that she has known Harrison a long time and has never thought of him in that way. When Harrison first tried to make it the business, he was told he didn’t have it. Joy said that people always tell you things are a longshot, adding that it might be a good thing because how many brain surgeons have we lost because they wanted to be singers? Elisabeth had a very critical professor in her painting class and it pushed her to do more to show him that she could do it. Sherri was told that she was too fat to make it in show business and then said, “Hey Sharona!” gleefully to the woman who told her that, wherever she is now.

Today on The View, Whoopi Goldberg started the show by making an apology to a cast of South Pacific because she had to leave at intermission because she was too tired after her long day.
The next topic was American Idol which David Cook won. Simon Cowell apologized to Cook for saying that he was too hard on him the night before. Joy said that it was strange that Cowell thought he was being disrespectful when he says a lot of disrespectful things to people during the auditions. Elisabeth said that the audience was possibly pushed to vote for Cook because of the things Cowell said to him.
Elisabeth and Sherri saw Sex and the City movie and they both loved it. After they gushed over it, Whoopi made fun of them and used her Valley Girl accent again.
John McCain sought the endorsement of a pastor, Rod Parsley in Ohio, who called Islam the anti-christ and called Mohammad “the mouthpiece of a conspiracy of spiritual evil.” Elisabeth said that both both men (Parsley and Wright) are hate-mongers, but that it took McCain three months to figure it out and it took Obama 20 years. Whoopi said that McCain hasn’t figured it out yet. Elisabeth said that his campaign has said that McCain doesn’t agree with the pastor’s beliefs. Whoopi said that McCain saw all that Obama has gone through and should have said something about the pastor before. Elisabeth said that we should give him a chance and maybe he was sleeping this morning and that is why he hasn’t said anything yet. Joy suggested that McCain’s Christian base may not care about negative comments about Islam. Elisabeth said that he would not sacrifice what is right for votes. Joy disagreed with that sentiment.

Here is The View schedule for May 26-30. Given the fact that Joy Behar has been vocal in her criticism of Dina Lohan in the past, it will be interesting to see if she makes nice with her or asks her some difficult questions.

TUESDAY, MAY 27 – A “Day of Hot Topics.”
WEDNESDAY, MAY 28 – Joan Rivers; Kirk Cameron (author, “Still Growing”).

Today’s recap will not be up in a timely fashion. Feel free to comment here about your thoughts on today’s show.
The first topic on The View was what do you say to her daughter if she asks you if you voted for Hillary Clinton? Joy Behar said you tell her that a man took it from a woman and then they yelled at her for complaining about it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she would love to make history, but that we need to vote to secure our future and she will have to tell her daughter that Clinton’s views did not line up with hers. Whoopi said that there may be a few women running or a whole bunch of Black people running in the future. Joy said that she wouldn’t vote for Phyllis Schlafly, who is anti-feminist, just because she is a woman.
Elisabeth showed pictures of each candidate giving a speech and analyzed the sign on their podium. She thinks that Hillary Clinton only has “Hillary” on her sign because she is running away from her husband’s name and that Barack has “Change” really big, but his name small because he doesn’t have a long voting record. She said that McCain has just his name. Whoopi said that is in case that is in case he forgets his own name. Joy asked if the McCain photo was an ad for Metamucil? Elisabeth said that is like her holding up the Hillary picture and saying it is ad for PMS medication. Joy said “or hormone replacement therapy.” Elisabeth said about Barack that “You can’t say ‘I love America, I love America, let’s change it.” Whoopi called that argument a “stretch” and said that Barack is saying he will be a change from Bush.
