Video of View writer Janette Barber’s Emmy Acceptance

Monday, June 16th, 2008

As I wrote yesterday, former View writer Janette Barber won a Daytime Emmy for the autism special that the show aired last year. Here is a video of her acceptance speech which was apparently recorded by co-winner Andrew Smith.

The View June 16th Recap: Glenn Close, Catherine Bell, Kim Delaney and Cyndi Lauper

Monday, June 16th, 2008

cyndi-lauper-the-view.jpgToday on The View, all five hosts were at the table. The first topic was Whoopi Goldberg’s performance as host of the Tony Awards last night. Her co-hosts told her that she did a great job. Whoopi looked more tired than usual, which is not surprising. They showed off a photo of her dress which you can see here. Joy said that she had not seen her legs before. Whoopi said that she hasn’t shown her legs on this show yet because there is a lot of leg competition. They showed some clips of her various skits and outfits. Elisabeth called her a star. Barbara said that are so lucky to have her. Whoopi said that she had the greatest time doing the show. She said all the plays and musicals were worthwhile and she was excited to come full circle from her start on Broadway. Whoopi also showed off her necklace which she got in the gift lounge. Whoopi revealed that on the desk in the segment where she talked about the play August: Osage County was Barbara’s book, Audition. She wanted to put Joy’s book on the desk too, but they told her that a kids book would not make sense in the scene.

The next topic was that the writers and hairstylists won Emmys. They did not give their names. Then Joy said, “It’s all about the hair.”

Photos of Whoopi Goldberg Hosting Tony Awards

Monday, June 16th, 2008

For those of you who missed the Tony Awards, here are some photos of host Whoopi Goldberg throughout the show. She dressed up like Mary Poppins at one point, just like Sherri Shepherd did in a segment for The View several months ago. What do you all think of her black dress, the one designed by the Project Runway winner?

Barbara Walters Reacts to Tim Russert’s Death

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Like many of you I am sure, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Meet the Press moderator and NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert. I spent some time this afternoon watching MSNBC and listening to his colleagues, friends, and rival journalists talk about what a void his death has created and he was by all accounts not only a great journalist, but a great man.

During the time I was watching MSNBC, Barbara Walters called in to discuss her memories of Russert and express her shock over his death. The video of her comments is below.

The View June 13th Recap: Chevy Chase, Tina Brown, and the Ultimate Tea Diet

Friday, June 13th, 2008

chevy-chase.jpg Today on The View, all five women were at the table. Barbara Walters went to a party to celebrate her book where her friends decorated the room like the Latin Quarter and even had the original menu from that time. She showed the menu, which featured a drawing of a topless woman. Standards and practices made them put a bar over her chest to show it on TV. Barbara then started singing, I missed why exactly. They talked about how her book would be a good Father’s Day present. Barbara made a comment that they are going to drive everyone crazy if they keep talking about the book. (Going to? We are way past that.)

Barack Obama is considered “multiracial” according to the last census, so is he really the first major Black candidate? (Who came up with this ridiculous question?) Whoopi said that it used to be much simpler when you chose Black or white and it is just easier to say that you are Black and Sherri said that is how he identifies himself. Barbara said that she doesn’t know if at some point Barack chose between acting Black or acting white, but he has lived his life with pride as a Black man. Sherri said that there are other biracial people who identify as Black, such as Mariah Carey and Halle Berry. Joy said that is because the world identifies them as that. Whoopi said that he could never pass as white, while those woman could have. Joy said it should be a non-issue. Whoopi said that her daughter is light-skinned and her grandchildren, some who are darker than others, just think about their friends being their friends and not what race they are. Sherri said that people would not accept Barack if he said that he is a white person.

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Here is the schedule for The View for June 23-27, when the show is in Las Vegas, subject to change. I have a few comments on the quality of the guests. First, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from The Hills? Really? Second, Kim Kardashian again? She was just on in March and even then many people wondered, “Why?”

TUESDAY, JUNE 24 – Music from recently crowned “American Idol” David Cook and first-runner-up David Archuleta; Las Vegas’ “Entertainer of the Year” singer/comedian/impressionist/actor Danny Gans; a tour of Whoopi Goldberg’s private bus.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25 – Pop star Jessica Simpson performs a tune from her soon-to-be-released country music CD; a performance from the cast of Cirque Du Soleil “O”; comedienne Rita Rudner.

The View June 12th Recap: Brooke Shields, Tom Wopat and Faith Prince

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

brooke-shields.jpgToday on The View, Joy Behar walked out and her shoulder pad fell down her shirt. She showed it off, saying it is supposed to be for your breasts. Whoopi Goldberg thought that her bra broke.

The first topic was how Elisabeth Hasselbeck watched Celebrity Circus last night, which she loved. Whoopi was the ringmaster on a previous show called Circus of the Stars. Elisabeth said that she wanted to do the trapeze. Joy said that she didn’t want to because she has had enough sex from chandeliers.

Seven people were arrested in South Carolina for cheering too loudly at a high school graduation. Whoopi said it is hard not cheer for your loved one. Sherri said that she cheered when her girlfriend graduated from college, even though they weren’t supposed to. Elisabeth said that you have to clap to wake yourself up at some point. Whoopi’s oldest granddaughter is graduating from high school today. Whoopi nearly drove their last week because she had the date wrong.

Whoopi said when speaking to graduates, you want to tell them the truth and tell them that “It’s gonna hit the fan” starting tomorrow. Joy said that you have to give them some hope that life is better than high school or college. Whoopi said that once you graduate, you no longer have nets that you had before. Sherri said that she still has dreams about being in school. Whoopi dreams that her front teeth are gone. Elisabeth had a dream about a tooth falling out during the Symphony. Joy had a friend who had a recurring dream that she was opening a diner with the Marx Brothers.

Dr. Drew Pinksy told Playboy magazine that Tom Cruise may have joined Scientology because of neglect during childhood and mental illness (I couldn’t get all of what she said because she read it extremely fast and in a monotone. I think that she really didn’t want to read it). Elisabeth thinks that Dr. Drew was trying to get publicity. Sherri said that people used to say all the time that Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult and she didn’t like it. Joy said that Senator Frist diagnosed Terry Schiavo based on television. Whoopi said that people look at them (the hosts) everyday and diagnose them.

Video of Kate Hudson on The View

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I still haven’t gotten a chance to watch today’s show on my TiVo. In the meantime, you can check out this video clip of the interview with Kate Hudson, where Barbara Walters pressed her on the rumors of a romance between her and Lance Armstrong.

As an aside, did you all read the comments on my post yesterday about meeting Rosie? The mom of the little boy dressed like Batman stopped by and said hello! Small world!

My Day with Rosie O’Donnell

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

cimg1519.JPG

This morning I headed to the Michael’s Craft Store in Skokie, Illinois for Rosie O’Donnell’s Crafty U book signing. I really had no idea what to expect and I considered not even going because I was not sure it would be worth taking a vacation day from work. Not that I don’t think that Rosie is worth missing work for, but I have been to book signings before that were cold and impersonal and after waiting for hours I was shuffled along without so much as a “Hello.” A Rosie O’Donnell book signing, however, is so much better.

For those of you who want the short version or who are wondering whether you should go to a local signing yourself, my advice is “Go. You will not regret it.” She gives everyone personal attention and the way she interacted with the crowd made me admire her even more. For those of you who want every last detail of the day, read on . . .

Video of Rosie O’Donnell on Million Dollar Password

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Rosie O’Donnell appeared on Million Dollar Password on Sunday. I thought that she did a great job. If you missed it, the full episode is below, courtesy of CBS. I apologize for not posting a reminder prior to the airing, but I was out of town this weekend for my birthday and nearly forgot to watch myself, until I got a reminder from reader Dee (thanks!)

In other news, today’s View recap will be late because I am going to attempt to brave the crowds and see Rosie at her book signing today.

The View June 9th Recap: Debra Winger and Broadway’s South Pacific

Monday, June 9th, 2008

debra-winger.jpg Today on The View, Barbara Walters was absent. (Thank goodness. After last week, I thought she was going to be on everyday to make up for her lack of presence during her book tour).

The first topic was how hot it was in New York over the weekend. Sherri, Whoopi, and Joy talked about their hair and how it is affected by hot weather. Joy said she had a teacher as a child who called her “Brillo head.” Whoopi suggested using Sea Breeze and cold water in a bucket and soaking towels in it and then putting it around your neck to keep cool.

The hot weather did not stop the Puerto Rican Day parade. Whoopi said that nothing stops the ethnic parades and that they make people nervous when an ethnic group gets together.

Hillary Clinton formally suspended her campaign. Whoopi said, “Did she lose?” anything besides the nomination. Joy thinks she may have lost her husband more than before. She thought he was crying because his reputation has been tarnished. They talked (again) about whether Barack Obama will be getting the white vote. Joy said that Gloria Steinem said that women are liked when they lose, while men are liked when they win. Joy said that people will treat Hillary well because she lost. Elisabeth said that women are seen as victims and now since she has lost she will get more sympathy. Joy said that is sexism. Elisabeth did a 10k all-women’s race this weekend and a lot of women were heartbroken over Hillary losing. She said that there is a support that women have for each other.
