Rumor: Elisabeth Hasselbeck is Still Unhappy at View
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
The rumors have not died down that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is unhappy at The View. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on September 29th that Elisabeth is “really upset” with co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar and that Barbara Walters called a ”cooling off” meeting to “keep a lid on things.”
I realize that this is not much of an update of previous rumors, but thought I would post it anyway. Especially since the tipster was my dad. Thanks for the link, Daddy!

The View September 30th: Bill Maher, Kevin Farley, and Dr. Drew Pinsky
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
Today on The View, it was the four main hosts, with no Barbara Walters. The first topic was the rejected bailout and the drop in the stock market. Sherri Shepherd said she didn’t understand because she thought they were so close. Joy Behar just got a message from Barack Obama saying that he will suggest later today to increase the FDIC limit to $250,000. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that you want the right package to pass and she hopes the people we elected are thinking about the people and not politics, especially because a lot of them are running for re-election. Joy said they need to use their own heads. Sherri is upset because she keeps reading about the sub-prime loans to minorities and they should not be to blame just because they wanted a part of the American dream. Elisabeth said they are not to blame, it is the lenders. Whoopi said that it was a big party and people had money to burn and now the party is over. She said everyone had a hand in the pot. Joy said that sometimes she is at a party and she sees people doing heroin, she will say “I don’t do that.” She said people could have blown the whistle. Joy wants to know why the banks cannot just go back to the lower interest rate on the mortgages, rather than using the higher rate on the ARM. Whoopi said they are just not thinking and it will take forever to get done.
Bill Maher joined the women for the second segment. He has a new movie coming out called Religulous. Joy asked him about the bailout and he said that he always thought that George Bush had one more giant screw up in him and he won’t be happy until he leaves the White House burning behind me. Maher said we don’t know if the projections of “gloom and doom” are true or not because we are not economists. He joked that you should look at the people next to you and might have to eat them soon.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck with Grace at Sleeping Beauty Event
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Here are some photos of Elisabeth Hasselbeck with her daughter Grace at Disney’s Sleeping Beauty 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition screening and after-party in New York City on September 28, 2008. It looked like Grace liked meeting Sleeping Beauty, but did not care for all the cameras.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Mike Huckabee Show (Video)
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Here are two videos of Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Mike Huckabee’s new show on Fox News over the past weekend. I watched about two minutes of it at the hotel on Saturday until Huckabee asked about Reverend Wright and it hit me that watching Fox News does not make a fun vacation.

The View September 26th Recap: Julianne Moore and Candace Bushnell
Friday, September 26th, 2008
Today on The View, in this new, but pre-taped episode, the four main hosts were present, without Barbara Walters. Whoopi Goldberg was wearing a brown dress today, with black tights, and brown shoes. Joy Behar asked her if wearing dresses this week changed her. She joked she was “much more weepy” and was “chilly in areas she didn’t go she could be chilly in.” In all seriousness, she said that she was not changed and she would be happy to go back to her regular clothes.
The first topic was tonight’s debate. (The show was taped earlier this week so there was no discussion about whether it will happen or not). Sherri said that she was excited to see the debate. Elisabeth said that she is ready for it, because she has has “electionitis” and wants to hear from the actual candidates. She predicts that John McCain “will do quite well,” and Barack Obama “will hang in there, too.” Elisabeth said that foreign policy experience is a huge strength of his. Whoopi said she doens’t know if it is a huge strength and both candidates have some foreign policy experience and everyone has met with with world leaders. Elisabeth said that Barack took a field trip and had a free concert in Germany and that is not experience. Whoopi said it is more experience than Sarah Palin has and Elisabeth said that she is not running for president.
Whoopi said that none of them will have the experience that a president will have and no one is ready for the job until they have it, like Bill Clinton said. Joy said that she looks at “temperament, judgment, and intelligence.” Whoopi joked that none of them would be in then. Joy said that she think that Barack Obama has those qualities, but McCain does not have a good temperament. Elisabeth said that she doesn’t understand why people keep talking about McCain’s temper. Joy said that his own colleagues, like Pat Buchanan have talked about it.

Time Magazine: “Traditional Journalism Could Learn From The View”
Friday, September 26th, 2008Time Magazine is the latest media outlet in recent weeks to present a positive review of The View and its role in the presidential campaign. In the article “The View, the Proud,” author James Poniewozik asserts that this political campaign was “tailor-made” for The View because the campaign is “saturated with identity politics” and “driven by issues respectable journalists are uncomfortable discussing openly,” and, like The View, sometimes “becomes something of a train wreck.”
The article posits that the reason for the show’s success during the campaign is that they do things that other media do not in that they “address issues people actually care about” and “say what they actually think.” Poniewozik suggest that when journalists do otherwise it can come across as phoniness. He even suggests that the show would be even better off if Barbara Walters worked on “dialing down her studied neutrality even more.”
The article asserts that even though the panelists are biased, their interviews are actually newsworthy. He adds that the “traditional journalists” can learn from The View that transparency of the panelists is a positive thing and if you speak truth to power and “have a following,” then “power will still have to come back to reach your audience.” He also added that journalists can learn that a “confrontational interview is not necessarily a bad one.”

The View Schedule September 29-October 3rd
Friday, September 26th, 2008
Here is the schedule for The View next week, subject to change. I think that the Bill Maher interview could be interesting, as he certainly is not one to hold back on his opinions. I will be happy to see former host Lisa Ling back. I have always liked her.
MONDAY SEPT. 29 - Jennifer Hudson; Selena Gomez (Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place”); Lisa Ling, former co-host of “The View,” joins the co-hosts in “Hot Topics” to discuss her ABC News “Nightline” special.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 30 - Bill Maher; Kevin Farley and Robert Davi (”An American Carol”); Dr. Drew Pinsky.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 1 - Miss Piggy; Peter Krause (ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money”); Diahann Carroll (author, “The Legs are the Last to Go”).
THURSDAY, OCT. 2 - Greg Kinnear (”Flash of Genius”); couple voted off ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
FRIDAY, OCT. 3 - Anne Hathaway (”Rachel Gets Married”); Troy Dunn (”The Locator”).
Whoopi Goldberg Moderates Spike Lee Film Discussion
Thursday, September 25th, 2008Whoopi Goldberg moderated a discussion at the Apple Store in New York City about Spike Lee’s new film Miracle at St. Anna. Here a few photos of her at the event, which took place September 25th.

Paris Hilton on The View September 25th (Video)
Thursday, September 25th, 2008Here is video of the segment featuring Paris Hilton on The View today, September 25th. I noticed that Joy Behar’s question to her about whether she is able to vote despite having been “in the slammer” has made the rounds on the gossip sites today, many of them calling it a feud or fight or something silly like that.

How I Almost Made it on The View. (Well, No, Not Really.)
Thursday, September 25th, 2008You may recall that my New Year’s resolution this year was to make it on The View. I wrote at the time that it was a “dream goal” to be a guest-host on The View and I posted the picture above. I knew that it would never happen, but it pays to dream big, right?
Earlier this summer, my husband and I decided to take a trip to New York City for our anniversary. Although I knew I could not actually get on the show, I thought I could at least get tickets to sit in the audience. I have since tried several routes to get tickets and I thought we had gotten in, but then I was told that all the VIP tickets for that day (this coming Monday, September 29th) were taken. At least I should be glad I was considered VIP, I suppose, although it is not much consolation.
I had day-dreamed of getting to meet all of the hosts and thought about what I would say to each of them, especially Elisabeth. I had imagined what I would say if, by some stroke of luck, I got to speak on camera (maybe as the audience participant at the halfway point in the show or something). I thought about making my husband wear a “Watching the View” t-shirt or making up cards to hand out to other audience members to get more readers. But, alas, now my Monday morning will be spent at a museum rather than hanging out with Sherri Shepherd, Joy Behar, and the rest.
However, the most disappointing part of not getting to see the taping is that I was so looking forward to coming back and telling you all what happened behind-the-scenes. I thought that I could even make a series out of it, doing postings over the span of a few days, showing pictures and writing about my experiences. Instead, maybe we will get up at the crack of dawn to go see the Today Show or something.
