April 12th Recap: Rose McGowan and Molly Shannon
Rose McGowan sat in as guest host today. She currently stars in the film Grindhouse. Rosie O’Donnell joked that after just meeting in her the make-up room, she loves Rose McGowan because she is so “talented, smart, and gorgeous.”
The topic again returned to Don Imus, who was fired from his MSNBC show yesterday, although the radio program will still continue. Rose McGowan said that she wants to get a new button that says “say no to ho.” They also talked about how Al Sharpton has made anti-semitic remarks in the past and maybe he should not be the one calling for the firing of Imus.
They also talked about the Duke rape case, where the young men have been declared innocent by the prosecutors and all charges were dropped. Rose McGowan said that the boys have a frat mentality and remind her of the type of boys that used to pick on her in school. She thinks that although maybe they did not rape the woman in this case, they probably have a history of doing inappropriate things in the past. Joy Behar agreed that they are like white boys club.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck expressed concern that all the men are now branded with this even though they are innocent and Rose said she sees that side of the issue as well.
Rosie O’Donnell said that there was very little news about the troops’ tours being extended in Iraq. Rose McGowan said that the British press, for all their faults, at least do not regurgitate the government propaganda about the war. Elisabeth said that she hears about the war on the news. Rosie said that she only sees pro-war news on Fox News Channel. The crowd didn’t like that comment and booed her. Elisabeth said that she watches other channels and reads a lot of newspapers. She said that she does see wounded soldiers on “specials.”
They also had a heated discussion about whether the United States government rules by putting fear in the minds of the people. Obviously Rosie thinks they do and Elisabeth said they don’t. Rose McGowan chimed in sarcastically that ever since the government told her to put duct tape up on her windows, she has felt very safe. It was hard to make out exactly what everyone said during this debate because Rose McGowan and Elisabeth kept talking at the same time.
After their aired a clip from Grindhouse, in which Rose McGowan’s character had her amputated leg replaced with a machine gun, Joy Behar said that if Heather Mills had gotten one of those, she would have gotten all of Paul McCartney’s money.
Molly Shannon, star of Year of the Dog appeared on the show. When she was introducing her, Joy Behar said she is a lot like Molly’s character in that “she spends her time around a lot of bitches.” Molly has two kids Stella and Nolan, with her husband who is a painter. She said that when Nolan was six months she was using the breast pump and her daughter Stella started to dance to the rhythmic sound of the breast pump. Molly also said that she feels like the breast pump talked to her at times when she was very sleep-deprived, saying things like “you whore, you whore,” with each beat.
Molly said that the new movie is a sophisticated comedy, with very deep and well-written characters. The film is about people’s obsessions, as well as finding yourself.
Dr. Gadget appeared on the show to talk about these new gadgets:
Pop-art toaster: burns images onto toast, like smiley faces, “bite me,” and birthday cakes. It also comes with edible magic markers.
Soda club: allows you to make your own soda (or pop as I like to call it)
Wherifone: cell phone that has GPS in it, so you can know where the person is with the phone. Can be programmed to only three phone numbers. Rosie told Rose McGowan to take the phone so she will know where she is at all times. They both joked that they would program each other as the only numbers in their wherifone.
Wireless rear back-up camera: shows you what is behind your car when you are backing up.
Photobook Creator: create a photo book at home
Leeza Gibbons and partner Tony were kicked off Dancing with the Stars this week. They appeared on the show and performed a tango for the audience. Leeza works with the Memory Foundation and has learned that dancing is one of the great ways to maintain your memory. Tony is rooting for Laila Ali to win the competition, but Leeza is “sweet on” the male contestants. Elisabeth announced that all the dancers kicked off Dancing with the Stars will appear on the The View each week until the finale.
