Barbara Walters Oscar Special: A Review
Did any of you watch Barbara Walters’ Oscar Special last night? I thought that the interviews were fairly short or at least seemed that way because she showed such long clips of them last week on The View. I felt like I had seen most of the content already. Add that to unnecessarily long introductions and long segues and the show was really light on substance.
I also did not like how oddly edited the interviews were, most notably the Vanessa Williams interview. There were several times that it was obvious that Vanessa had given longer answers, but they were edited down so that she just said, “Yes” without explanation. I suppose that is necessary to do for time purposes when you need to show Barbara talking for five minutes in front of a random house wearing an evening gown with an extremely high slit.
Barbara’s questions were annoying at times, especially when you could tell she was doing an “on the fly” follow-up questions. I did like the Harrison Ford interview, more so because of him than her, though. I couldn’t believe that she actually asked, in regard to Calista Flockhart’s adopted son, who Harrison no doubt considers to be his son, too, if they have “gotten close.” The look on Harrison’s face was great.
Let me know your thoughts if you watched it.

We were watching 60 minutes last night and recording Barbara Walters. I have not had time to watch it yet. I felt the way you expressed it… we had seen many clips on the view and it took the edge off having a tug of war with hubby as to which show we watched at 7 pm EST. I will return later with other comments, if take the time to watch it. I had a feeling it would be a ” downer. ” I love Jon Stewart and hung in for most of the Awards show. zzzzzzzzzz

[...] were all too safe. Barbara said that she hated her dress on her special. (I reviewed her special here). Barbara talked about the people on her special and got two of their names wrong. [...]

Thanks Sooze, Rachael and Sandy for expressing what I could not do without being emotional regarding Sherri and her son and EX husband or for all women who have the responsibilty of providing for their children alone. Sherri knew for some time that she had the gig before it was announced and she did not take the decison lightly. She was in counseling to save the marraige and very hesitant to make the move. Her
son’s state paid for therapy was coming to an end and I am sure that was added pressure to keep him in the enviorment he was used to until she could send for him. As for the poster who said I took it personally, and that “most women would cut off their arm rather than dessert their child” She nor am I using a cheating husband as a reason to take off. If they tried to repair it and it did not work it is much healtier for the chi
to move on. He comes off bitter(are there lines waiting to see his stand-up?) she does not only stating it is a part of who she is now. She sounds like she is making sound decisions, not jumping into dating or having sex.

I’m glad that Sherri took the decision of dumping that A-hole.
Good for her.
And you’re very welcome, Valerie. I just get pissed when ppl start throwing stuff around pegging it as fact when no one really knows for sure what the score is.
I simply based what I wrote on the other thread on what Sherri said on the show.

You’re welcome, Valerie. Don’t let the negative comments get you down. And let’s hope that those who throw stones from their glass houses without having walked in the other person’s shoes keep the quote “there but for the grace of God go I” in mind before they act so self-righteously about Sherrie’s life or your life or mine or anyone else’s.

Seeing I have given up watching The View, I had not seen any of the interviews for the special. I watched and enjoyed most of it. I am one who feels it is time for BW to retire. And Bill Geddes needs to tighten up his producer skills.
The editing was awkward, the questions were awkward…but it was nice to see someone talk to Ellen Paige.
