Barry Manilow cancels View appearance because of Elisabeth Hasselbeck?

According to TMZ, singer Barry Manilow has canceled his scheduled appearance on The View tomorrow because he disagrees with Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Manilow is quoted as saying:
I strongly disagree with her views. I think she’s dangerous and offensive. I will not be on the same stage as her.
Do you all think that this is true? My initial reaction was that it seems sort of unlikely, however, TMZ claims that the above quote is directly from Barry and not from an “insider,” so I suppose it is true.
I wonder if there will be any mention of it on tomorrow’s show?
UPDATE: Now TMZ is reporting that the shows’s producers canceled on Manilow when “his people demanded that he appear on the show without Elisabeth.” In either case, it does appear true that he does not want to be on the stage with her. I am not really surprised that the producers are standing behind Elisabeth.

It’s always difficult to make a call on these kinds of things although if Manilow did cancel because of EH all I can say is, “Go Barry! Go Barry!”
I hope she does not return after her maternity leave. It’s going to be so nice not to have to listen to her for awhile.

TMZ had now updated the post to say that The View canceled Barry when “his people” insisted that EH not be on when he performed. Kind of six of one, half a dozen of another to me. He obviously does have an issue with her. Smart man.

I’m a fan, mostly of his talent as a writer, now I love him even more! Maybe this will start a trend.
People are dying and she STILL supports this failed policy. Good for Barry!

A message from Barry…
Hey guys,
I wanted to let you know that I will no longer be on The View tomorrow as scheduled. I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out.
It’s really too bad because I’ve always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs. The good news is that I will be on a whole slew of other shows promoting the new album so I hope you can catch me on those.
Love,
Barry

As much as it pains me to say this, the producers of The View made the correct call. A performer comes on the show to plug their items or ideas. In essence, they are coming into someone else’s house. Now think about this; a guest saying I will only come visit you if your husband stays out of the living room/kitchen/dining room….
The producers were in a tough spot. They needed to stand behind their employee. To not do so invites other guests to pick and choose who they don’t want on stage with them. Who would be next…Whoopi? Joy? Barb?
As much as I understand Barry’s reasons for asking what he did (I don’t think I could stand being around EH either), he really made an unreasonable request. If they had complied, they would have sent a really bad message, one being they don’t support their View hosts. Besides, at the end of the day, they would have had to continue to work with EH, and them complying with such a request would have - I’m sure - made her feel bad.
It’s best, under those circumstances, for him to stay away. He still did not compromise his feelings or beliefs, so good for him.

Who cares if she feels bad? Does she feel bad for all the kids who have been murdered in Iraq and continue to be murdered every day?? She supports an illegal, murderous war. And the dictator war criminal in charge of it. Who the hell could stand to sit next to this maniac who adds NOTHING to the show. This is not the time to worry about hurting someone’s “feelings”!! EVERYONE should stand by their beliefs and tell the murderous neocons we’re not going to stand it anymore. Way to go Barry!!!

Interestingly enough, I do have a friend whose husband and I were barely on speaking terms at first. But I have to give the guy this, he knew his wife and I had been friends for more than 40 years and he respected that. He essentially said, “I don’t want to be a part of this friendship and I think we can make it work if I just go out to the shop or something.” And he was right.
She was mad at both of us at first thinking we weren’t trying hard enough, but Hubby and I just really don’t like each other. However, since we worked out this arrangement — about ten years ago now — we have gradually managed a degree of civility I suspect we both would have thought impossible. We’re never gonna sit down and drink coffee together but we worked out a compromise.
Maybe I’m remembering this wrong, but didn’t Rosie sit out an interview with someone who either didn’t want to talk with her or with whom she didn’t want to speak? Most situations don’t have to be so either / or. Generally there is a potential compromise.

Maybe the most important thing to come out of all of this is Barry’s statement about how dangerous he thinks EH’s parrot-talk is, especially about Bush’s War. It isn’t just “a hot topic”–it’s a critical, serious, dangerous situation that Bush has put us i, andn it demands our attention and scrutiny and discussion.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:29 am
I find her more ignorant than dangerous.

I agree that the producers made the right call.
Barry certainly has the right to state his opinions, and “view”. I respect that.
I don’t think that EH is dangerous, nor in her opinions. After all I agree with a lot of them, and I know I’m not dangerous.

Sandy,
EH is an imbecile! She has blinders on when it comes to this war and the corruption within the GOP.
I can see why some would conclude her views are dangerous…Especially the people who have lost family members fighting in another country’s civil war. Or the innocent Iraqis who have been killed or displaced because of our occupation. How can she claim the moral high ground when she supports the torture of other human beings?
September 18th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
What is dangerous is the way Bush took us to and presided over this war. His supporters will not see or cannot see that his mistakes if repeated will put our country in more danger.
September 18th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
I can agree that we certainly don’t want or need another war such as the Iraq war, or any war. I may be conservative, but I am NOT for war, nor am I for torture of anyone.
The fact is we are in this war, it doesn’t really matter right now how we got there. It wasn’t just by the president alone. A majority of senetors voted to go, including many democrats.
I have a nephew in Iraq whom I love dearly. I worry daily about him, I would love to see him home, NOW. However I also understand the republican and conservative points of view concerning leaving Iraq now.
Obviously I don’t know EH personaly, but I certainly don’t feel she is an imbecile. I think that’s kind of rude. I know many people personaly who disagree with me, and my view, and I would never call them an embecile. I accept that others have many differnt points of view than I do. And that’s fine. That is what makes America what it is.
September 18th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
“it doesn’t really matter right now how we got there.”
In order to find your way out , you must understand how you got in. This isn’t about a difference of views it’s about life and death. Yes, I truly dislike EH and all she stands for. I don’t need to know someone personally to dislike them…Take OJ for instance. It’s just mind numbing to hear her make excuses for Bush and his corrupt administration.
As far as the Democrats goes, they were wrong too, they’re also wrong for standing by and watching Bush stomp on the Constitution and the Bill of rights.
September 18th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Oh, no doubt, EH is the village idiot at The View table. She, like Bush and his cronies, have turned the Republican Party into a farce. They aren’t even real conservatives in my book since they have no principles except to fool people for as long as they can get away with it.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Rainlillie, what you said here is the point I have tried to make about Barry, or about anyone who speaks up to counter EH when she parrots the right-wing talking points about Bush’s War:
“This isn’t about a difference of views it’s about life and death. ”
This is my reason for speaking up on this forum.
Sandy, I have a lot of sympathy & empathy for you with regard to your nephew being in Iraq. I hope he is safe. I also appreciate how civil your post was when you spoke up to express your dissent with what I and others have said. You did not trash those of us who speak out against EH & and the war and you did not make big assumptions about us and our lifestyle and whether or not we are doing constructive things about the war. Thank you.

How 5th grade is that Barry M? I thought this was a free speech country. Guess not for you eh.
September 20th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Who cares about Barry? He was popular 30 years ago and doesn’t even write his own songs anymore, just takes other people’s songs and retreads them. I don’t think this will be any kind of big loss for the show.

Kenneth,
Barry is a living legend. He has a huge fan base. He’s written some of the most beautiful songs ever written.
