The View September 8th Recap: Brad Garrett

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was absent. They talked about how the set background changed from purple to yellow which they liked better. (I liked the purple, personally, but no one asked me)

Whoopi Golberg’s last night at Xanadu was last night. She is exhausted. Elisabeth Hasselbeck pointed out how close Whoopi had gotten with the cast. Joy recommended community theater to people, as did Whoopi, because it is a great experience and you can meet interesting people. Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters went to see Whoopi in the show together. They also had lunch together and it messed with Sherri’s head that she was having lunch with one of the top 100 most powerful women. Barbara told Sherri not to read bad press and gave her advice on being a single mom. She wants to have a pajama party with Barbara.

Joy will be on Larry King Live tomorrow night as a guest.

The Video Music Awards were last night. Whoopi thought Britney Spears looked “terrific.” Sherri said for awhile there people were worried about her but she looked “so good.” Joy jokingly asked if she had a baby on her lap. They showed a clip of her winning an award, thanking her beautiful children. Joy said she is waiting for someone to come on TV and thank their “ugly children.” They then talked about cute babies and ugly babies. Sherri said Jeffrey had such a big forehead, it was a “fivehead,” but he grew hair so he looks better now. Whoopi said her daughter looked like Mao when she was born and she kept trying to give her back to her real mother. Joy said her daughter is beautiful now but looked like Nikita Khrushchev when she was born. Elisabeth said that Grace looks just like Tim, but that Taylor looks Elisabeth’s grandfather.

The View September 5th Recap: Adrian Grenier, Niecy Nash, and Chelsea Handler

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Today on The View, comedian Chelsea Handler guest hosted to fill in for Elisabeth Hasselbeck who went to the Republican National Convention. {I am assuming the show was taped Thursday afternoon.} Chelsea’s book, Are you there vodka? It’s me, Chelsea has been on the NY Times best seller list since it came out. She joked that she was on the list with Barbara Walters and they have similar writing styles; Barbara writes about the world leaders she interviewed, while Chelsea writes about the people she slept with. Sherri pointed out that Barbara wrote about having an affair with a Black man. Chelsea that she, too, has had sex with Black men.

Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg will be doing stand-up at Foxwoods next weekend and in October. Following their act they will be doing a Q&A with the audience. Whoopi tried to read the information about it on the teleprompter and messed up. Although it was bleeped, I think she actually said “Fuckswood” instead of “Foxwood.”

Sherri lost her cell phone at Toys R Us and the wireless provider told her that someone was using her phone. She e-mailed the phone and the woman using it said that she paid for it, buying it from a woman who said it was her aunt’s phone. Sherri asked to buy the phone back. The woman would e-mail her and tell her who had called her. Sherri went to Bronx where the woman lived to get her phone back. She said that only in New York are people so nice, although all her pictures of Jeffrey were deleted.

The View September 4th Recap: Terrence Howard and Audrina Patridge

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Today on the September 4th episode of The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck was not present because she will be at the Republican National Convention later today. Sherri Shepherd was absent yesterday because it was Jeffrey’s first day of school. He was fine, but she didn’t want to leave him. She felt a “pang” that he didn’t cry or anything and it took her six tries to leave. When he got home, he kept saying he wanted to go to school. The school is for children who have developmental delays and she feels good leaving him there.

Sarah Palin gave her speech last night at the convention. Barbara Walters said she was “just wonderful” no matter what her views were and it will be tough for Joe Biden to debate her. Sherri was disappointed that she made fun of Barack Obama’s job as a community avtivist, which he did when he could have taken a high paying job instead. He was serving his country. Sherri broke down when Palin said that people who have a special needs children have a friend in her. Joy said she was great and could be a comedian because she has great timing. Joy thinks that men are attracted to her and she is like a librarian who has the hair up and then takes it down and “va va va voom.” She said that might be sexist, but that men did not find Hillary Clinton attractive.

Whoopi thought it was a good speech and she came out strong. She gave information we would not have known before. She was also bothered by the slighting of Barack’s role as a community organizer. Whoopi was really aggravated when Palin said she had to explain to her opponents what a mayor is and that community organizers don’t have actual responsibilities. Whoopi said that it is often the activists who are getting information back to the mayor about what is going on in the city. They liked the clip of the little daughter holding the baby and fixing his hair with spit. Barbara said it may cost her an interview, but read from an article that said that as governor, Palin raised taxes, pursued pork belly projects, looked into banning books, and thinks the Iraq war is God’s will. Palin also recently cut funding for teen mothers who don’t have a place to live. Barbara said that none of those things were addressed in her speech.

Videos of The View September 3rd: Hot Topics and Adele

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

In lieu of my complete written recap please enjoy these videos from the September 3rd episode of The View. There are four videos of the extended hot topics that they had today. Prior to the videos I have written a brief recap of what happened before the discussion in the first clip. The last video is the musical performance by singer Adele. Although Maura Tierney was scheduled for today, I guess that she got bumped or canceled at the last minute. If anyone was looking forward to her appearance, I will let you know if she is rescheduled.
*****
Today on The View, Sherri Shepherd was absent because she was taking her son Jeffrey to his first day of school. They talked about how school starts younger these days. Joy Behar said she had to sing Italian songs in Kindergarten to get cookies and milk.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck went to see Whoopi Goldberg in Xanadu last night and had a lot fun. Whoopi is only in the show through Sunday. Elisabeth said that Whoopi shares a dressing room and bathroom with her cast mates there, even though she is famous enough to have gotten a trailer. Joy was skeptical of a trailer at Broadway. Whoopi said that it was love that Elisabeth went to see Whoopi rather than stay at home and watch the Republican convention.

I hate to be so lax so early into the new season, but work commitments will keep me from getting a recap of today’s episode of The View up today.

Feel free to comment here about today’s episode. If you missed the announcement on Tuesday, Sherri Shepherd will be missing today’s episode to take her son Jeffrey to his first day of school.

Scheduled guests are Maura Tierney from E.R. and Broadway’s “Three Changes” and singer Adele.

The View September 2nd Recap: New Kids on the Block

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

The View finally returned from its hiatus with its first new episode since late July. All five hosts were present for the show’s return and the start of season 12. {I have to admit I was happy to see them all come out on the stage. I guess I missed the show more than I thought I would!} They have a new purple background and a new introduction.

Whoopi Goldberg was busy during hiatus doing Xanadu. The co-hosts will be going to see her perform later this week. She doesn’t want to know which day, though, because it will be distracting. Sherri wants to scream “Whoopi!” but Whoopi told her only when the show is over. Barbara still has her book Audition out. It will be in paperback this spring.

During the hiatus, Joy went to Barbara’s summer house for dinner. Barbara asked all her guests who they would vote for if the election was that day and they all said McCain, even though they were liberals. Barbara said that was before the convention. Sherri e-mailed a lot to Elisabeth to get parenting advice during the hiatus. She now has Jeffrey full-time now.

Whoopi encouraged people to support the Red Cross and other organizations to help out after Hurricane Gustav.

Why Random People Watch The View

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

(NOTE: The picture to the left was cropped that way when I chose “thumbnail” option for displaying the photo in the post. I did not intentionally partially crop out Elisabeth or Whoopi. In case you were wondering. You can see the full photo by clicking on it).

I just got this bizarre press release from ABC to promote season 12 of The View. In addition to listing the scheduled guests for the first week of new View shows in September (not bizarre), it lists quotes from “12 random viewers” about why they love The View. Anyone else think that the “12 random viewers” are Bill Geddie, Barbara Walters, and some friends?

From the “random viewers”:

The View July 31st Recap: Pamela Anderson and Toby Keith

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

(EDITOR’S NOTE: As I am waiting for this morning’s episode to begin, I realize that I am grateful for the August hiatus, as I, too, need a break from the daily grind of The View. I am heading out of town tomorrow for some much needed relaxation (from life in general, not just this blog), so I may or may not watch tomorrow’s show before I head out, depending on when we leave. I will be back posting next week).

Again today it was just the four hosts, with Barbara Walters absent. The first topic was how humid it is in NYC. Sherri Shepherd said that NYC is the only place where with the humidity you wake up wet. Whoopi said, “If you are lucky.”

Then Whoopi said that that they received a letter from a spokesperson from the Barack Obama campaign that the allegation that Obama allowed his prayer to be published was completely false. They didn’t discuss it and left it at that.

There is a new McCain ad about how Obama is a celebrity, which features Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Whoopi thinks is it a little bit offensive because Paris Hilton has been in jail and the drunk tank and Britney had some mental illness. She said if he wants to compare him to a big celebrity, they should have chosen Will Smith or George Clooney. Elisabeth thinks the ad is successful because we are talking about it. Elisabeth said you learn from it that Obama will increase taxes. She added that Obama was on Access Hollywood. Whoopi said that is not the point. Elisabeth said to let her finish. She said he is on People Magazine next to Lindsay Lohan.

Sherri Shepherd said it was “very very high school” to use what people consider to be two “dumb” celebrities who both have criminal records. Joy Behar said that we love celebrities in this country and calling him a celebrity is not an insult. She said that it seems like McCain is jealous of Obama’s celebrity. Joy said that there are people who read those magazines. Elisabeth admitted that she loves celebrity weeklies. They showed a picture of Wilford Brimley with McCain and Joy commented that is the level of celebrity he can get or something to that effect. I could not quite catch it because Elisabeth started on one of her favorite topics, “If you want to talk about friends, let’s talk about Obama’s friends.” Whoopi (or was it Joy? I cannot keep up very well when they argue so quickly) said that is not the point we are discussing. The audience vocalized negatively when Elisabeth started naming people linked with Obama. She said that she doesn’t care if people are turning on her and you can only have one opinion in this country right now, but she will continue to give her differing opinion. Whoopi told her not to go there because she got burned by not having the right opinion in the past.

The View July 29th Recap: Tori Spelling

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was absent, leaving only four hosts. Joy Behar said she was sick again, just before hiatus. This has happened each year; last year she had Shingles.

The trailer for W, the new Oliver Stone movie about President Bush appeared on the internet yesterday. They showed it on the show. Whoopi said she wants to see the movie. Elisabeth said, “Really??” Elisabeth said it is another one of Hollywood’s games, coming out right before the election. She said it is biased and suggested that people see a documentary instead. Joy said it was interesting that Richard Dreyfuss is playing Dick Cheney because he really hates Republicans. Whoopi said she is interested to see it because she would like to see it before saying it is a “piece of dog doo.” Sherri said she loves to see movies about real people to see how they got where they are. Whoopi said that Elisabeth is saying it is slanted but she hasn’t seen it. Elisabeth said from the trailer she can gather what it is about and will not be shocked what it is about it. Whoopi asked her if she would admit it was a good movie if it turns out to be good. Elisabeth said she would dance around on stage in a tutu. Whoopi said she should see it before she says she hates it. Elisabeth said she doesn’t hate it, but thinks it is biased and a spoof. Joy pointed out that documentaries have accused of being slanted, like Fahrenheit 9/11. Elisabeth said they are investigative, though.

The View July 28th Recap: Nancy Pelosi and Katy Perry

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was back from France, so all five women were at the table.

Barbara complained how expensive Paris is and bought a “piece of junk” Eiffel Tower replica which was $50, for the producer of 20/20, but didn’t bring her co-hosts any gifts. She went to eat with two other people and the bill was over $700, even without drinks. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that is why the French are skinny. Barbara interviewed Carla Bruni, wife of French President Sarkozy. Barbara said she was sweet and wonderful. She asked Bruni about her many past lovers. Whoopi asked if Barbara and Carla had any of the same lovers, because they are both so “worldly.” Barbara said, “I hate you all. I am sorry I came back.” Barbara said if any first ladies in this country had the past Bruni has had, they would be vilified. Whoopi said that France does not care about sex, but they have other hang-ups. Barbara said that if Whoopi wants her to talk about her past lovers, Whoopi needs to talk about hers. Whoopi said all of Barbara’s lovers are in the book. Whoopi said that she has been around a little while and has had some fun. She won’t do a book about it.

Ashley Dupree, former call girl linked to Eliot Spitzer, now has her own reality show and will receive a $1 million. She wants to do journalism or be a lounge singer. She also wants to help others. Joy said it is like The Bachelor, but at the end instead of a rose, they get an STD. Sherri made a follow-up joke, but it got bleeped out. I think she said that Dupree has a $1 million cootchie, but I can’t be sure. Whoopi said that she is one of several people who got a reality show because of their “magic snap,” or “amazing snap” which she explained to Barbara was a term coined by Richard Pryor.

The View July 24th Recap: Plastic Surgery Special

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Today’s episode of The View was all about plastic surgery!!!! (Fake excitement, there, if you wondered). Whoopi said that today was a special episode and Joy asked what makes it special. Whoopi joked it is because Joy is here and then, using her Valley Girl voice, “Because we love each other and are really close!”

There were 47,000 nose jobs last year, the vast majority done on women. Whoopi said that it is more affordable now and we have put ourselves in a position where nothing looks right on us. They showed a photo of Ashlee Simpson who had a nose job. Whoopi said she looks 40 now. Joy thinks tightening a vagina might be going too far. Joy joked she wanted to shut down her vagina after she gave birth, not tighten it. Elisabeth said kegels work and she is doing them right now. Whoopi said she was doing them too. Elisabeth said her trainer told her to imagine picking up a bottle and bringing it up in an elevator.

The View July 23rd Recap: Jon Hamm and John Slattery

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was gone, off on her trip to Paris. Whoopi Goldberg started the show by saying how great Joy Behar did hosting Larry King Live last night. She said it seemed like her show and she should be doing a late night show. Sherri Shepherd said it is difficult to fill in for someone, but that Joy really commands the show well. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that Joy mentioned that Larry needed a vacation and did it in a respectful way. Joy joked that her brassieres are starting to look like suspenders these days.

Sherri addressed the interview she did with Precious Times which has been making headlines. She said she tried to make jokes during the interview because she was talking about so many painful issues. She said that the comment about Barbara Walters being “saved” was a joke and it didn’t come out like she wanted. She called Barbara in France to apologize and Barbara laughed at the joke and said “I’m already in heaven, I’m in Paris.” Sherri then apologized to Barbara on air. Elisabeth said reading a joke in print may not be funny. Whoopi said sometimes jokes just don’t go the right way you want it to.

She said that when she made the comment about having a lot of abortions, she wanted to inspire other women who have a lot of shame and guilt about abortions and let them know she went through it, too. The woman did not include the full quote in which Sherri said that she suffered from a lot of shame and guilt and she didn’t know how to forgive herself. A woman she met at a women’s conference told her that all of her babies will be waiting for her in heaven saying “Hi Mama” and that freed her and she knew Jesus had forgiven her. She was not trying to be flippant and was not trying to glamorize abortions. Joy said that most women don’t admit to having had abortions, even to their friends. Whoopi said there are many reasons why people make that decision and it is an important conversation to have. She said that as long as you work it out with God, who are we to say anything. Elisabeth said, “There will be a judgment day.”

Today’s View to Feature Limited Commerical Interuption

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Have you ever said to yourself, “If only The View had fewer commercials, then there would be more time for Hot Topics!!”? Well, if so, today is your lucky day.

On Monday, July 21, “The View,” (11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon) will broadcast live with T-Mobile USA, Inc. as a single commercial sponsor adding bonus time to the popular “Hot Topics” segment, a result of limited commercial interruptions. The unique sponsorship is the first of its kind for both “The View” and ABC Daytime. “The View” will showcase one full hour of “Hot Topics”, and the T-Mobile sponsorship will spotlight the company’s new home phone calling service – T-Mobile @Home®.

“Thanks to T-Mobile, there will be more minutes of ‘Hot Topics’ than ever before in the 11 year history of “The View.’” I want to personally insure our viewers that we won’t run out of things to say,” said Bill Geddie, executive producer of “The View.”
