The View April 30th, 2009 Recap: Real Life Hot Topics

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

day-of-hot-topicsToday on the April 30, 2009 episode of The View, it a “day of real life hot topics.” The teaser at the beginning of the show promises a man who helps people cheat on their spouses and a man who was cleared of a crime by DNA after many years in prison. I wonder which will go first and which will get more airtime?

Whoopi Goldberg was back on the show, but Sherri Shepherd was absent. I don’t think they even mentioned she was gone, unless I missed it. Whoopi thought she had the swine flu, but she didn’t have it. She had a bad cold. Barbara Walters said that they deliberately did not mention where Whoopi was because they did not want people to freak out. Elisabeth Hasselbeck thanked her because part of the reason she stayed away was because she was worried about Elisabeth’s unborn baby, according to Whoopi‘s friend Tommy who Elisabeth talked to.

Whoopi asked whether we (as a nation) are overreacting about the swine flu. Barbara said that so far in this country the cases are mild. Elisabeth said that like any flu certain people are more susceptible. Barbara thought that Vice President’s Biden’s comments this morning were irresponsible where he said he would tell his family not to fly or ride the subway. Joy said that he doesn’t remember that he is the VP sometimes and doesn’t realize the weight to his statements. Elisabeth said that he has made mistakes again and again and Biden’s comments can cause nothing but panic. Barbara pointed out that President Obama was very calm about it when he spoke about it last night at the press conference. Elisabeth agreed that President Obama’s comments were much better and gave good advice.

The View April 28th, 2009 Recap: Emily Deschanel and Kim Kardashian

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

emilydeschanel.jpgToday on the April 28, 2009, episode of The View, Barbara Walters had returned, but Whoopi Goldberg was absent because she has “the day off.” Yet, Barbara did not know that she would be on today. (?) Barbara just got in from Argentina at 8:30 a.m. this morning and her phone was ringing while she was in customs to tell her she had to come on the show. Sherri Shepherd liked her shirt that she got in Argentina and called her a “sexy house peasant.” Barbara is so tired that she tried to talk into the phone in her dressing room and then realized that it was her coffee cup. Then Barbara showed some photos from her trip, including Barbara doing the tango. At the Peru airport the attendants were all wearing masks.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck wanted to “rant” about a woman who was in an Australian beauty contestant who people want disqualified because she is too thin, but says that she is not anorexic. Elisabeth said that people have hatred for her based on envy and people should have sympathy for her if she is anorexic. Sherri said that is a cultural thing. Barbara said that people are worried to praise her, because what affect would that have on the young girls. Joy said that people are jealous of thin girls, because that is the cultural ideal. She said that in another culture where they are starving, they would praise a larger woman. Sherri said that then when there is a curvaceous woman like Kim Kardashian she is criticized for being too curvy.

The View April 27th, 2009 Recap: Day of Hot Topics

Monday, April 27th, 2009

day-of-hot-topicsToday on April 27, 2009 on The View, it is another day of hot topics with the four main hosts. Sherri Shepherd came out wearing a face mask. Dr. Mehmet Oz will be on the show later to talk about swine flu. Then Sherri took her mask off. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that schools are telling parents to keep kids home if they are showing symptoms. Joy said Dr. Ruth said that that sneezing is an orgasm. Sherri said that at some point sneezing become accidentally peeing a little. Elisabeth said that she is at that point now.

Elisabeth went to a wedding over the weekend and the plane ride home was very turbulent and Grace got motion sickness. Some nice teenagers in front of them gave them extra barf bags and were very helpful.

The View April 24th, 2009 Recap: Lil Wayne and Jamie Luner

Friday, April 24th, 2009

lilwayneToday on the new, but taped April 24, 2009, episode of The View, the four main hosts were present. The first topic was that the key to living longer was having friends. Joy said that is why she is on Twitter. Sherri said her friends helped her through what happened prior to her divorce, but said she could not say more because of a court order. (was she kidding or is she really not allowed to talk about it anymore?). Elisabeth said that it can be bad, too, because friends can make you eat more.

The View April 23, 2009 Recap: Meghan McCain guest hosts and Jim Parsons

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

meghan-mccainToday on the April 23, 2009 episode of The View, , Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters were both absent. Meghan McCain, daughter of John McCain, sat in as guest host. Elisabeth is in Florida on “family business” and Barbara is in Argentina.

Meghan is being followed on Twitter by Karl Rove, which she thinks is creepy. She said the blog post she wrote about that tried to make the point that Rove on Twitter is a metaphor for the Republican party trying to woo young Republicans. They are using Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, and Dick Cheney as the face of the party to do that. Meghan said that Rove twittering will not bring more young people the party. Whoopi asked who she thought should be the face of the party. Meghan mentioned Congressman Aaron Schock and a quote by Christy Todd Whitman about the need for a place for moderates in the party. Sherri about her the lack of diversity in the party. Meghan agreed, saying they need to branch out, noting that she recently spoke at an event for gay and lesbian Republicans. Meghan is pro-life and pro gay marriage. She wants the party to be more open to moderate ideas.

Whoopi asked her about her thoughts on the prosecution for torture. Meghan said her father, who was tortured for five years, is anti-torture and she is anti-torture because of that. She said that he is the best person to ask about the issue because he experienced it. Meghan said we can’t act like animals and it is what separates us from the terrorists. She does not know what the answer is, but thinks her father knows better than anyone that it is not the answer. Joy joked that having to still watch Rove and Cheney is “real torture.” Meghan wants the party to become more of an umbrella party like it was during the Reagan time. She thinks that the entertainment value of politics has led to the change of the party.

The View April 22nd, 2009 Recap: Jeremy Irons and the Clark Sisters

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

jeremy-ironsToday on The View for April 22nd, 2009, it is Sherri Shepherd’s birthday and all five hosts were present. It is also her son’s fourth birthday. When they got out to the table, Sherri started crying. She said that her friends were in the crowd for her birthday.

The first topic was about the Miss California/Perez Hilton controversy. Miss California’s grandmother said that Perez should be hosting a Chippendale contest rather than Miss USA. Barbara recapped the story, which I will not recap here, because you all, no doubt, know the story already. Barbara noted that Perez is openly gay. She just gives us so many pearls of wisdom. Elisabeth said it is interesting and pointed out that Barack Obama gave a similar answer to Rick Warren and they played a clip. Barbara feels sorry for “the girl” because it should not have been a political question at a beauty pageant. Sherri said that some people said she should be more politically correct and Whoopi said that she and Perez were both being politically correct for their own beliefs. Sherri said that she gave an answer that was true to herself. Whoopi said if you ask a question, you have to accept their answer. Joy said that she has to say what she believes, but the comment that Perez should be judging the Chippendales sounds really lame

Then they talked about American Idol. For a really long time.

The View April 21st, 2009 Recap: Sally Quinn, Quinn Bradlee, Candy Spelling, Susan Welch, and Lily Allen

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

candy-spellingToday on The View for April 21st, 2009, was a special “Exceptional Women” episode of The View, where all five hosts were present. The first topic was the gifts that Joy Behar brought the co-hosts from Washington, DC. Monica-Bill joke. Barbara stealing from the White House joke. Joy got Barbara napkins because that is what she likes to steal, brought the others extra hats from the White House Easter Egg Roll. She also brought nice eggs from the roll which were signed by the President and First Lady. She brought one for Elisabeth that was from the Bush administration. Cheney in an undisclosed location joke.

Then they played the clip package that she filmed with her Flip Camera over the weekend. The editors/producers decided to highlight her inability to use the camera, including filming the sidewalk. Not really funny and it would have been better had they included more actual content.

The View April 20th, 2009 Recap: Day of Hot Topics

Monday, April 20th, 2009

day-of-hot-topicsToday on the April 20th, 2009 episode of The View is another Day of Hot Topics, with all five hosts present. Whoopi Goldberg flew to Los Angeles over the weekend. Barbara Walters then explained to “people who might be watching for the first time” (really, who are those people?) that Whoopi had not flown in many years. Whoopi wanted to name the airline that helped her with flying, but Barbara would not let her, so Whoopi said that it was something she used to be, but isn’t anymore. (Virgin Airlines for those of you who aren’t awake yet).

Whoopi told a story about the boyfriend of a man that sat next to on the plane. He said that The View saved his life because he was too riveted to the show one day to get up an investigate a noise in the other room and it turned out that his apartment was being burglarized. When they later caught the burglars, he learned that they had become violent with other people who surprised them during a burglary.

SheetzuCacaPoopoo 2: Max Goes to the Dogs — A Brief Review

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

max-cover

While hanging out at the bookstore the other day, I decided to head to the children’s section and read Joy Behar’s new book SheetzuCacaPoopoo 2: Max Goes to the Dogs, which she has mentioned on The View more than a few times.

The book has a similar message to her first book, SheetzuCacaPoopoo: My Kind of Dog, which is that you should not prejudge others. The first book saw Max being prejudged by the purebreds because he was a mutt and in this new book he is disliked by the bigger dogs at doggie daycare because he is small.

The big dogs are running things at the doggie daycare, making it a miserable place for Max and the other smaller breed dogs. The small dogs have a rebellion of sorts and try to reclaim the daycare for themselves. They also teach the large dogs that they can come in handy for things like getting into small spaces. Eventually the large dogs and the small dogs learn that they can all be friends.

Like the first book, the illustrations by Gene Barretta are beautiful and the dogs are all very cute. A good characteristic of a children’s book, though, is that they can be read over and over and still be interesting and I don’t know if this book has that kind of sustainability. Thus, I recommend you check it out from the library and see how much the kids like it before you spend any money on it. I would say the same for the first SheetzuCacaPoopoo book as well.

The View April 17th, 2009 Recap: Matthew Perry and Tracy Pollan

Friday, April 17th, 2009

tracy-pollanToday on the April 17th, 2009 episode of The View, the guests are Matthew Perry (17 Again); Tracy Pollan (Natalee Holloway).

The first topic was the spoof E-harmony commercial that Lindsay Lohan did for FunnyorDie.com, which they showed. Whoopi Goldberg thought it was really funny and was happy to see her “give the finger” to the tabloids. Sherri Shepherd said that she loves she has a sense of humor and hopes she is ok. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she is an honest person and has a great wit to her. Joy Behar said, “I have no opinion.” Then she said it was “mildly amusing” and she did herself a service by making fun of herself, which is the key to any comedian.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances far beyond my control, I will not be posting recaps today or tomorrow. I hope to be back up and posting on Wednesday, but it is not up to me. I hate not recapping when they are just back from hiatus, but there is nothing I can do about it. (Hopefully I can explain this all better later in the week).
