The View November 7th Recap: Ricky Gervais, Mario Cantone, and Steve Harvey

Friday, November 7th, 2008

IToday on The View, it was a “special edition” because it featured three comedians as guests. Joy was absent again because she will be on The Tonight Show tonight.

A high turnout of minority voters may have lead to more socially conservative issues to pass like Proposition 8 in California which bans gay marriage. Barbara Walters said that church groups supported it because they did not want to get sued if they refused to perform gay marriage ceremonies and did not want gay marriage taught in schools. Whoopi Goldberg said that marriage is not taught in schools, why would they teach gay marriage? Barbara said that it could discussed or in the curriculum. Elisabeth said that a priest in Sweden was arrested for refusing to perform a gay ceremony. Elisabeth said that supporters are saying that it is good that the victory came from the people rather than the court. Whoopi said that she has always said that if you don’t support gay marriage, don’t marry a gay person. Whoopi said that most gay people would not want to go get married in a church that would not support them.

My television cut out when Sherri was explaining her position. Anyone who saw it, could you fill us in with what she said in the comment section? When the TV came back on, they were at the first commercial break.

The View November 5th Recap: Post-Election Day of Hot Topics

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

I will be watching The View and doing the recap, but I thought I would publish the post early, in case you all want to comment here on the show as it is happening. Keep refreshing this page to see my recap throughout the episode.

All five co-hosts were present for this post-election day show. I loved the big smile that Whoopi Goldberg had on her face at the start of the show as she said that Barack Obama won the election. She said that she asked her mom last night if she thought she would live to see this day and her mom said she never thought the day would come in her lifetime. Whoopi said that this is a moment where you realize that you have become the fabric of America and people want greatness for the country, which “knocked” her out.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck said she watched Obama’s speech with her daughter Grace this morning and told her that Obama had won the election and he will be the next president. Grace asked her “Who lost?” and she told her that no one lost. Elisabeth added that “Today is a victory for this country,” because America elected the first Black president and so many people let their voices be heard with the high voter turnout. Joy joked, “So are you saying that I have been right all along?” Barbara said, “Nothing like a sore winner.” Elisabeth said that she will now get in the long line of supporters of our next president because as Americans that what we should do.

The View October 23rd Recap: Debra Messing and Jeffrey Ross

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Today on The View, the normal announcer was not there and I think it was Bill Geddie doing the introduction. It sounded really odd. Whoopi Goldberg was back, but Barbara Walters was absent. Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck walked out together, smiling.

Whoopi said that she was glad to be back and said that she had emergency gum surgery yesterday. She had a “chipmunk cheek” due to an infection and people looked at her strangely yesterday. Sherri Shepherd said that she tried not to look horrified when she saw Whoopi yesterday. Whoopi said that she let her mouth go, despite having dental insurance, and she brought it on herself. She said that your mouth is connected to the rest of your body, including heart health. Elisabeth said that now cardiologists are having a conversation with dentists to work on overall health. Whoopi will be losing some teeth as a result of her neglect.

Rosie O’Donnell’s “Variety Hour” Set for November 26th

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I reported back in July that Rosie O’Donnell was in talks to join NBC with a variety show. It has now been confirmed that Rosie’s Variety Hour will premiere on November 26th, which is the night before Thanksgiving.

The show will feature a “topical monologue and feature celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits, and a giant giveaway for both the in-studio and home audiences.”

Rosie has always said that this is the type of show that she would love to do and in the statement she released yesterday she stated, “This is a dream come true for any performer . . . Old time variety, live from New York with a nod to Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett and memories of Sonny and Cher.”

It appears that NBC is being cautious, however, as only the one episode has been ordered, rather than a full season. Are you planning to watch?

Joy Behar Time Capsule: Tums Commercial

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

YouTube user Edster posted the following video on his channel. It is a 1996 Tums commercial featuring Joy Behar. I remember this commercial from when it aired (I have a thing for commercials) and it was fun to see it again knowing what the future holds for the “waitress.”

He has also posted several old Rosie O’Donnell K-mart commercials.

The View September 11th Recap: Jessica Simpson and Tyler Perry

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Today on the September 11th episode of The View, all five hosts were present. They began the show by acknowledging the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Whoopi asked where they all were that day. Barbara Walters had an assignment that day to talk to families of the survivors. Elisabeth was in Los Angeles. Joy was in make-up room that day at The View. She noted that she is losing her voice today and joked it was God’s will. Sherri said that God wants her to scream from the mountain tops. Joy said that she still gets chills every year and pointed it out that it is always a nice day on the anniversary. Sherri did a comedy show that night and it was the most crowded it had ever been because people needed to laugh. Whoopi was doing interviews in LA following the completion of taping of Hollywood Squares. When she first saw it on the television, she thought it was a movie. She stayed in LA, but let people use her bus to get back to NYC.

Elisabeth was in the park with the kids last week and heard shouting. It was 100 Army people working out. Elisabeth yelled “woo!” at them. She explained to Grace that they were working to protect us. Grace asked why they needed protection. She told them that they have been working seven years to keep us safe. She didn’t want to give her fear because children will have their own fears. Grace then turned and said, “Woo!” at the Army people. Sherri said she held Jeffrey a little closer today. Joy’s daughter was on a plane on 9/11 getting ready to go to Canada. Joy called her and told her to get off the plane and she did. The stewardess did not know or was not telling the passengers. Whoopi said today is the day that you recognize that we are all American. Barbara said that although many people are critical of President Bush, whatever has happened, we have not been attacked in the past seven years and they should give credit where credit is due. They all agreed.

Rosie O’Donnell and her Broadway Kids sing to Rachael Ray

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

For those of you who are Rosie O’Donnell fans, you may want to check out this video. Rosie appeared on The Rachael Ray Show yesterday with some of the children from her “Rosie’s Broadway Kids” program. They sang to Rachael who was celebrating her 40th birthday.

I would have posted a note to let you know of her apperance ahead of time, but I mistakenly thought it was on Friday of this week.

On her latest “Ask-Ro” on her blog, Rosie mentioned a few View related things. When someone asked why Elisabeth Hasselbeck made the comments about Michelle Obama and suggested that she did it for money, Rosie wrote, “the view doesnt pay well/it is not syndicated.”

She also responded to two separate questions about why Barbara Walters allows Elisabeth to make such comments. Rosie wrote “the view master runs the place/she is his favorite” and as to who is in charge, she wrote, “the tall bald republican.”

Rosie O’Donnell Posts Link To Old View Clip of Sean Hannity

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Despite being a month-long blog vacation, Rosie O’Donnell posted a link to this YouTube clip with the title “2 years ago.” It is a segment when she was a guest host on The View which features guest Sean Hannity. Although the person who posted the clip did not know the exact date, it had to have been more than two years ago because Meredith Vieira was still on the show when this episode aired and she left at the beginning of June in 2006. Also, given that Rosie says in the clip that she does not have a job, this had to have been before she was hired on as the show’s moderator, which was announced in April 2006. I suppose the “2 years ago” could be in reference to the fact that two years ago from today she was gearing up to start on The View as moderator?

Watching the clip made me think a few things. The first, and most predominate, feeling is that I miss The View with Rosie; for her passion and excitement about issues and for her humor, both of which are evident in the clip. The second is that her statement near the end of the clip was huge foreshadowing when she said something to the effect of that the reason that she she does not have her own show is because she gets so animated about issues like the war and it angers people.

I am wondering what provoked her to link to that particular clip on today of all days? Could it be because of vice-presidential talk in the clip? Could it be because it is almost the two year anniversary of her start as moderator on The View? Maybe there is no significance in the timing and she just came across it on YouTube? What do you think is her reason for posting the link? To show that she has had the same feelings about the president/war for a long time? Is she going to be a guest on Hannity and Colmes? Is she just being nice by giving me something to write about? (Yes, that must be it!)

Rosie O’Donnell’s True Colors Tour Stand-Up

Monday, July 7th, 2008

For those of you who are interesting in seeing Rosie O’Donnell’s True Colors stand-up act, here are two video clips of her routine in Atlanta. Unfortunately the people who recorded it talk a bit during the performance which is a little annoying.

Danny Gans Sings to The View hosts (Video)

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

As I wrote in my recap of today’s June 24th episode of The View, Las Vegas “Entertainer of the Year” Danny Gans sang a song to each host on The View and brought up Rosie O’Donnell in his song to Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Here is a clip of all of the songs he sang:

Video of View writer Janette Barber’s Emmy Acceptance

Monday, June 16th, 2008

As I wrote yesterday, former View writer Janette Barber won a Daytime Emmy for the autism special that the show aired last year. Here is a video of her acceptance speech which was apparently recorded by co-winner Andrew Smith.

My Day with Rosie O’Donnell

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

cimg1519.JPG

This morning I headed to the Michael’s Craft Store in Skokie, Illinois for Rosie O’Donnell’s Crafty U book signing. I really had no idea what to expect and I considered not even going because I was not sure it would be worth taking a vacation day from work. Not that I don’t think that Rosie is worth missing work for, but I have been to book signings before that were cold and impersonal and after waiting for hours I was shuffled along without so much as a “Hello.” A Rosie O’Donnell book signing, however, is so much better.

For those of you who want the short version or who are wondering whether you should go to a local signing yourself, my advice is “Go. You will not regret it.” She gives everyone personal attention and the way she interacted with the crowd made me admire her even more. For those of you who want every last detail of the day, read on . . .
