Details of Tom Cruise View interview and Swayze interview ratings released
ABC News has released information regarding The View interview with Tom Cruise which was recorded today. The interview will air Friday. In the interview, Cruise speaks about the death of the son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston, as well as Scientology. For more details, and a short video, visit ABC News.
The interview with Patrick Swayze was a ratings hit for Barbara Walters last night with 12.6 million people tuning in to hear the actor talk about how he is dealing with pancreatic cancer. Did any of you watch the interview? What did you think? I enjoyed the interview in terms of content, as I appreciated Patrick and his wife’s candor and openness about the issue and I have always been a fan of his. However, I thought the interview was edited poorly and there was too much jumping back and forth. While I realize it was probably a very lengthy interview that had to be pared down to about 45 minutes, but all the splicing was rather distracting.

Didn’t watch it. It seemed too maudlin in the previews.

I didnt watch much of it, but I did tune for a little while. I thought the same thing… They kept bouncing back and forth from Barbara and the Dr, then Barbara and Patrick, then back to the Dr…. on and on…. It felt to me at one point that this interview was more about Barbara than it was about Patrick Swayze.
I stopped watching at that point.
Oh…. Berndoubt… maudlin….. good word…. I had to look it up…. it means:
” weakly and effusively sentimental”
The word comes from the year 1509
Just how old are you??
January 8th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Old enough to know better.

The word maudlin always reminds me of SCTV and Sammy Maudlin. Catherine O’Hara used to say, “I want to bear your child!” and it made me laugh like a hyena.

“Catherine O’Hara used to say, “I want to bear your child!” and it made me laugh like a hyena.”
Our difference in age is clear:
In their song “Whatta Man, Salt n Pepa say, “You so crazy. I think I wanna have your baby.”

I never used to miss a Barbara Walter’s interview. But the past couple of years, she has become painful for me to watch. And I have watched her since the very beginning of her career on Today. Sometimes it is best to know when to retire.

I was thanking President Elect Obama for pre-empting The View and Tom Cruise. Now I will just have to ignore tomorrow.
I didn’t watch the Patrick Swayze as it seemed too sad and Barbara seems to dwell on sad. I feel very sorry for him but it hurts to see him.

I watched it and like Winnie said appreciated the openness and candor but at the same time felt like I was invading their privacy, I know that sounds odd.

I watched that clip of Barbara asking Tom Cruise about Jett’s death and Scientology’s part in it (and she did exactly what I said she’d do, put on the sad face and act like she had to ask the question) and I thought it was just so uncool. You know for a fact that the media will spin that answer into how Tom Cruise promotes/defends Scientology and twist it into some story when actually he was just answering the question and struggling to at that.

Anytime anyone does an interview with someone who is sick it seems exploitive. I though Patrick and Lisa were very honest. But Barbara asking Lisa about what it will be like for her after Patrick passes I thought was inappropiate. I’m sure Patrick spends a lot of time worrying about how Lisa will fare after he is gone. What kind of answer was Barbara expecting?
Anyone else think Barbara is already angling to get the first interview with John Travolta and Kelly Preston?

And for the record, from the clip on Tom’s interview, he didn’t bring up Scientology at all. Barbara was rude and brought up accusations and he seemed to really want to avoid that topic but she was making accusations. That clip just made me angry.
I don’t know how the rest of the interview goes, but Barbara Walters seems like a self serving b*tch in that clip to me, sorry but that is how I feel. Weren’t they just talking about giving the Travolta’s space and how the media is with it earlier in the week and how cruel the media was being?

ShannonP, Barbara is self-serving. When Rosie was on the show feuding with Trump she played like she was on her side but now her and Trump appear to be chummy again.
The View likes to criticize “the media” for being opportunistic and purveyors of gossip but they are the biggest offenders. At least newspapers are required to issue retractions when they make mistakes or outright lie but the View can disperse false and misleading information everyday and claim it’s just their opinion.

Also, Joy seemed to have made it to sit in on the Friday show.

Alright Im disillusioned. This afternoon berndoubt uses “maudlin” a word from 1509…. never heard the word before….. tonight, on the Factor with Bill O’Reilly maudlin was his word of the day…..
Now… which is it…. A- berndoubt IS Bill O’Reilly……B- berndoubt is Bill O’Reilly’s lover…… C- Bill O’Reily reads this blog but is too shy to comment.
Enlighten us berndoubt.

I thought it was very tacky that BW asked Tom on national TV about the death of his friends son. Tom was visibly upset and the question shouldn’t have been asked.
BW should have simply sent her condolences to the Travolta’s. It was despicable for her to bring up gossip about the circumstances of Jett’s death.

#16, option B makes me want to take another shower. I’d rather BE Bill O’Reilly than have sex with him! So, welcome to Watching the View, Bill-o!

I did not watch the interview.
I do hope Patrick was able to set the record straight and the false rumors will subside. I sincerely hope he can now deal with his illness in his own way. He seems like a really nice guy.

I have seen the clip a couple of times…. it was edited down when I saw it, but he looked like he was acting…. I may be jaded, but that was my first thought.

I totally agree with you on this point…. First they talk bad about the press… then they act exactly like them….. which is it? or is Barbara Walters…. the press is terrible because they dont respect the privacy of Travolta’s family, and The View is one of those terrible shows.

I watched the interview, as I have always been a fan of Patrick’s.
# 8 misslingdow,
Your statement doesn’t seem odd to me.
I felt the exact same way.
Tom Cruise.. I have to agree with others. My personal feeling is the media, as well as the Host on the View, should realize that the Travolta family & friends, need time to grieve, and the time to deal with their tragic loss. Now is not the time for questions.
On the other side, The View, did hold this interview until today, Friday. I’m sure in agreement with Tom.
As for B.W. question about scientology, I want to believe, that maybe, Barbara wanted to give Tom the chance to correct some misinformation about his religion.

I refused to watch ABC but I did see the Swayze interview in its entirety thanks to lester94111 over at youtube. I cried throughout most of the interview.
I don’t like Cruise so I didn’t watch it. Really, my only fave Cruise movie was Risky Business back in I think 1983.
Before he weirded out.
