Today on The View, E.D. Hill sat in as guest host, as a replacement for Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Elisabeth was on a class trip with her daughter, Grace. E.D. is from Fox News Channel and has a book out called I’m Not Your Friend, I’m Your Parent. She has eight children and joked she likes a martini on Friday. Joy asked her how she stays skinny. E.D. said by chasing them around.

Her book is about setting boundaries and how parents should not try to befriend their children. Whoopi said that parents want to speak the lingo and want to be “cool” with their kids. Joy said she had friends whose moms would tell them about their affairs. Sherri tells Jeffrey she is lonely because he cannot understand her. Whoopi said parents don’t know to set boundaries. E.D. said that parents should not try to give their children happiness and should allow them to pursue it for themselves. Sherri asked her about Sarah Palin and her being able to do it all, despite having many children. E.D. said that the more children you have the more you can get things done. Joy said that the oldest child can become resentful when they have to parent their siblings.

E.D. teaches her children manners, like “please and thank you, ma’m.” If you start with the little things like that, then they won’t talk back to teachers later on in life. She likened it to when Rudy Guiliani got rid of the squeegee guys in NYC and it impacted larger crime. Joy agreed with that because she felt unsafe with people approaching her car. E.D. said she never knew if she should give them money because they would probably buy booze.

Sherri said that she wants Jeffrey to have siblings, but selfishly thinks she cannot handle another child. E.D. says you have to give up your life. Whoopi said that they are lots of kids in foster care that need homes and would love to have siblings. E.D. asked how difficult it is to adopt kids from foster care. Whoopi said that there are thousands of older children in need, it is the babies that are more difficult to adopt. Joy said that it is not selfish of Sherri to only have one child. She can choose to only focus on one child. Sherri said that she does want more children, but she knows that it will be a lot of work.

Levi Johnston, father of Bristol Palin’s unborn baby, said that he always planned to marry Bristol and it is not a shotgun wedding. He dropped out of high school and is working. He thinks Obama is a “good guy,” but wants McCain/Palin to win. E.D. said it is stupid because Palin made it a big deal to keep kids in school. Joy said that she graduated H.S. at 17 and wondered what is wrong with the boy because he did not graduate yet. Whoopi said it depends on when your birthday is. Joy said if he only has one more year, why he couldn’t finish? Joy said that if it was a Black teenager, they would “be all over it like a cheap suit.” E.D. said there is a double standard, but there could be a lesson here for families because it is real-life and not like rich celebrities. Sherri said she has the governor as her mother and won’t she have benefits from that like Jamie Lynn Spears had? E.D. said that if Palin was going to be stepping in, she would have done so already. Whoopi said that Bristol won’t be going up to the oil wells with Levi, so the Palin family will have to step in and help. Sherri said that when a teenager has a baby is when she needs her parents most. E.D. said that Palin has been supportive of her daughter. Joy said what choice does she have because she is against abortion. Joy wants to know why they are waiting until next summer to get married and wondered if they are waiting for moose season. Whoopi’s daughter was 14 when she got pregnant she was in shock when she told her. She said that she can teach her children as much as you want, but can’t always prevent it. Whoopi said Levi is honorable to be going to work. Whoopi said that they are waiting for the wedding to see if they can have it at the White House.

Jim Cramer, host of Mad Money, appeared on the show. Money is exciting to him, the way other people have passion for sports or movies. He said that the DOW going back up is not a sign of health, but a sign of craziness. He said to save money right now. He said that the government has been taken by surprise by what happened and E.D. asked how they could be surprised, they have to pay credit cards and mortgages. Cramer asked “How much is the mortgage on the White House?” He said that they were previously told that the fundamentals of the economy were sound, which is what Hoover used to say. Cramer encourages people to take money out of the stock market if you will need it in the next five years. He was afraid he would lose his daughter’s college fund, so he pulled it out. She will be going to school soon. He is still saving money for his younger daughter. E.D. said that now the government is doing what Europeans are doing and why haven’t we figured it out ourselves? Cramer said it is becoming more socialist because we have lost control of the country’s money situation. E.D. is concerned about more catering to these companies because now the government has a piece of all the companies. Cramer said that we never wanted the government to own a piece of these companies, but it has prevented bread lines and empty ATMs.

Whoopi asked him about her 25% mortgage amnesty plan. He encouraged people to call the credit cards and mortgage companies and ask for better rates because they do not want you to default.

Paula Deen appeared on the show to promote My First Cookbook. Two little girls appeared to help Whoopi and Sherri cook. They made green eggs and ham. Add blue to make the eggs green, since they are yellow already. Then they made monkey bread using canned biscuits cut up with scissors. Add sugar and cinnamon and put them in a greased Bundt pan. Pour a butter and brown sugar mixture over top of it. Sherri asked Paula if she was worried about obesity. Paula said that they run around outside and burn off calories.

Musical guest 11-year-old Gabi Wilson also appeared on the show. She has been singing since she was three or four years old. She plays the drums, guitar, the bass, and the piano. She likes the bass because it shows the older, more soulful side of her, but likes the piano because it is like her couch. Will Smith is a big fan of hers and they have the same management. She just met Chris Brown and he gave her one of his hats. Gabi loves Alicia Keys and sang Alicia’s song, “If I ain’t got you,” while also playing the piano. She has also written a book of poems.

Barbara Walters receives “prestigious” Disney Legend award (from ABC press release). I put prestigious in quotes because that is the word they used in the press release. I have never even heard of the award. It is an internal Disney honor that serves to “celebrate and honor some of the men and women who have contributed their extraordinary talents to The Walt Disney Company’s great legacy.” The photos above and below are from the event in which she received this award.

Barbara Walters responded to Star Jones accusation that her former co-hosts were “hateful.” Barbara said that “Star had wonderful years with us on “The View.” And, I think “The View” made Star a star.” (That is the same line she used in the past when addressing Star Jones drama).

Heckler Spray’s take on the Star Jones situation: Star Jones Hates Everyone Who’s Ever Been On The View Ever The closing lines: “Star Jones could spend an hour jumping around in front of us telling us again and again what her name is, we still wouldn’t have any idea who she flipping was . . . Still, though, managing to realise that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is hateful - this Star Jones woman clearly deserves some sort of medal for observation.”

Today on The View, it is a “day of hot topics.” It was the four main hosts again, with no Barbara Walters.

The first topic was the weekend. Elisabeth Hasselbeck did a “girlfriends only” trip to a local vineyard. She shared a bed with her Democrat friend and they had “politics pillow talk.” They also discussed how their friends are taking on Tupperware and similar jobs in order to bring in extra income. A discussion of food “dips” led to a discussion of Joy Behar’s hair and using Dippity-Do. Joy said that she was the only one with curly hair growing up. She would have had to go to the Black neighborhoods to get proper hair products growing up, but she was too scared to do it. Whoopi Goldbeg said that when she was in South Africa, she learned that for many years, Black South Africans and White South Africans were both told that the other race would eat them. Whoopi said had Joy gone to the Black neighborhood, they probably would have been scared of her, too. Sherri Shepherd said once she saw a white couple walking down the street and she mocked fear and grabbed her purse.

Whoopi spent Sunday with the Association of Aging who honors those who work with the elderly. At the end of the program, a nun gave her a cookie jar that looked like a nun. The cookies are called “Nun better.” She said that the people gave up a lot to do the work and she doesn’t know if she could do it.

Joy was talking with friends about how if you are on your death bed, will you suddenly become religious? Whoopi said not only then, but when something bad happens. Sherri said that when you are facing what happens after death, people will pray just in case. Joy almost died in the hospital and did not think about religion, but only where her doctor was off playing golf. Sherri prays when she wakes up and gives thanks for being alive another day and hoping that she can get it right today. Whoopi said that the Lord knows how you are feeling and, if she does not make it, would welcome Sherri, knowing she did the best she could because she is silly.

There are 23 days until the election. John McCain had to correct a person at a townhall who said that she could not trust Barack Obama because he is an Arab. McCain said that Obama is a citizen and a decent family man, but they disagree on the issues. Elisabeth said that so many lies can ride through the campaign and you have to love McCain for saying that and not letting that lie continue. Sherri said that you should expect him to say that just because he is a decent human being. She said that the terrorist talk creates fear and one crazy lady soon can become a mob. Elisabeth said that the facts are the facts. Sherri said they repeatedly use the word terrorist and people think we are supposed to kill terrorists. Elisabeth asked her if she thinks Ayers is a terrorist. Sherri said that he has done a lot of great work since that time. Whoopi said that Ayers was a terrorist, who bombed two buildings, 40 years ago. She encouraged people to go to FactCheck.org to get the whole story. She doesn’t like when people (not Elisabeth) misrepresent the facts. She talked again about how it is a dangerous road to look at everyone’s past connections because many in Congress are linked to former members of the KKK. She said that she recognizes that to some people a man who opposes the war and bombs buildings is not the same as hanging hundreds of thousands of Black people, but you have to be careful when making associations. Whoopi said that it was great that Elisabeth and her friend were able to argue in bed and then say “good night” and be fine. Joy said that if people wanted to go after Elisabeth they could say that was a lesbian thing when she was in bed with her friend. Whoopi said that what McCain said at that town hall is the McCain she used to love.

Joy thinks that Sean Hannity is a “dangerous dangerous force in television.” He had Andy Martin on for an hour and he spewed vitriol and lies about Obama. Elisabeth talked to Hannity about this the morning and said he would welcome Joy onto the show. According to Elisabeth, a producer interviewed Martin, not Hannity, and Hannity condemns what Martin said. She said that Hannity has had made a career of people with strong views on his shows, but he condemns them. She said that it was not an issue when he had Rev. Wright on. Whoopi said that Wright was not attacking anyone person, he is just mad at America. Whoopi likes Hannity and he believes him if he says, through Elisabeth, that he condemns Martin. Sherri said that Obama has condemned everything that Ayers has done in the past. Elisabeth said that Hannity did not sit on a board with him for 20 years. Whoopi said that she should not talk if she doesn’t know what she is saying is true and people should go to Fact Check. Elisabeth said she does know what she is saying.

The official report on “Troopergate” stated that Sarah Palin abused her power, but did not break any laws. Whoopi thought it was interesting because it is in her right to fire the employee, but confused how she abused her power. Sherri read the report and it is says that she violated an ethics rule for putting pressure on people, but she could fire the employee at will. The report also stated that the family connection was not the sole reason that Monegan was fired. Sherri said that Todd Palin…then Joy interrupted and said “the secessionist.” Joy said that was a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Elisabeth said that he was not active in the organization and did not personally state that he wanted Alaska to secede. Joy said that Palin gave a speech and told the AIP that they were doing well. Elisabeth said that was part of her duty as governor. Joy said that Palin is big on cronyism and hired friends. Anyone who disagrees with her is considered a “hater.” She said that Palin is “Cheney in a dress.” Back to the original point Sherri was trying to make, Sherri said that she was surprised by how big the role Todd Palin had in trying to get the man fired. She said that she thought he just stayed how and stayed home with the children, but really he was very involved in his wife’s job. Elisbeth said that then we should look at Michelle Obama because she has “strong world views.” Sherri said that Michelle is not doing things to affect his policy views or make changes. Elisabeth said, “You don’t know.” Joy said that Sarah Palin “overuses her power and underuses her brain.”

A survey found that 52% of brides think that their sex life will improve after they get married. Sherri thought she would be freaky after she got married, but she did not. She said that sex pre-marriage is taboo, but then after you get married, “he is there.” Elisabeth asked if you take it for granted because he is there and you “sleep in fleece jackets.” Joy said that marriage is too safe and doesn’t like that she cannot get out of it easily and that is why she won’t get married again. Whoopi suggests having the man hide in a closet in a ballgown and jumping out and saying, “I don’t know how I got here, but you turn me on.” Sherri said something and Whoopi said “You are looking for thug sex.” Elisabeth said, “I am just looking for any . . . from my husband.” Whoopi said she would call him. Elisabeth said that it is hard when you are married because you are tired and sleep in fleece jackets, and you get lazy. Whoopi said playing games is good.

There is a 105 year-old woman who is a virgin and says that celibacy is the key to a long life. Whoopi joked, “that’s right because no one is aggravating you.”

Rapper T.I. appeared on the show. He was nicknamed “Tip” as a baby by his father. He tries to be the best he can be and takes advantage of opportunities. This album is called “Paper Trail,” because this is the first time he put pen to paper since his first album. He wrote the album while on house arrest.

T.I. is facing one year in prison for buying machine guns. He said that he has since learned that no matter where you are from, you should walk with God instead of walking with guns. He has had attempts on his life and his best friend was shot and killed protecting him. He is concerned about going to jail, but is not scared. He is looking forward to getting over with so he can get on with his life.

He then performed “Whatever you like” from his new album.

It’s been over a month since Whoopi Goldberg has done a blog entry (pressure from ABC to tone it down?), but she has been periodically answering WowOWow’s “Question of the Day.”

Joy Behar did a radio interview with Billy Bush, which you can listen to on his website. It took place the day after the VP debate and I kept forgetting to post the link. (Thanks to Shannon P for the link)

Barbara Walters’s interview with Peter Cook aired on 20/20 last Friday. If you missed it, you can read about the interview on the ABC website. Cook’s ex-wife, Christie Brinkley was unhappy that he did the interview, which included their two children, and tried to get a temporary restraining order so that Cook did not have the children in his custody during the airing of the interview. That was denied.

The Onion satirically claims that The View has added a new cast member: a 900-pound giant squid.

Today on this pre-taped, but new, episode of The View, it was the four main hosts again, with no Barbara Walters. The first topic was about married couples who have different political views and whether they can stick it out through the election process. Sherri said that she thinks the sex would be better after the arguments. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that her friend said she has more arguments with her husband, but there is that push and pull. Joy Behar said she couldn’t do it with a man with different views, adding that she wouldn’t want a man to do to her what George Bush has done to the country. Sherri said she would be depriving herself. Joy said she doesn’t like all the pounding. Whoopi said it depends on the headboard.

Whoopi said that her “better half” is not sure who he is going to vote for, so they have arguments about it. Joy said that there is so much more things to fight about than politics. Elisabeth said that sometimes you argue about things which is not the underlying problem. Elisabeth’s husband Tim pointed out in an argument that he does not like that she leaves grapes in the sink and she has done it for years.

Whoopi said that she and her partner don’t argue, they just mention things, like “There are droppings on the toilet seat and they are not mine.” Joy asked if she was living with an ape and Whoopi said that no, she is living with a man with external plumbing and then they proceeded to discuss men’s habits when urinating, such as shaking. It is not really worth repeating.

The economy is causing people to cut back on everything, including plastic surgery and trips to Whole Foods. Joy said that she will only get some Botox done. Sherri said that organic food is so expensive, so she buys the cheap full-pesticide food. Elisabeth said the pesticide food lasts a lot longer, too.

Whoopi talked (again) about her plan for 25% amnesty for people’s mortgages. Elisabeth said as the holidays are approaching, more people are realizing that they don’t have the money to travel to see their families. Whoopi said that they should make a pool where people can donate their miles to those who need them.

There is a new book about getting a man to marry you. Whoopi read some of the lessons out of the book, like don’t get your friends to pressure him to marry you and don’t talk publicly at someone else’s wedding about how he won’t marry you. Elisabeth read some things out of the book that women should do, like creating dependency by cooking and cleaning and being honest about your expectations. Whoopi read that you should hang out with happily married couples to show that marriage is a good thing. Sherri said that she liked hanging out with Elisabeth and Tim because they are happy together. Elisabeth said that maybe unmarried couples should hang out with unhappily married couples, so it makes your problems seem less.

Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on the show. Whoopi told her she liked her dress, but said she was hesitant to say that because they would make her wear it. Maggie’s husband has similar politics to her. She thinks it would be interesting way to live if they thought differently, but she is glad they agree. She grew up being told that Ronald Reagan was the boogeyman.

Maggie appeared in The Dark Knight. She was resistant to do the role because she had just had a baby and was used to making tiny movies in which she had more say. The movie has changed her life because it has given her a power to get movies made. She said that The Dark Knight is a movie about ethics and other issues and is not about nothing. Maggie said it is difficult to talk about Heath Ledger’s performance in the film, but it is a testament to his ability that when she watched the film, after 10 minutes she saw him as the Joker.

She just finished Crazy Heart, an independent film. She felt that it was difficult for her daughter to have her away for work and she felt guilty.

Maggie talked about SOYJOY, who is underwriting a fashion show for “four tiny designers” who make clothing out of natural and organic fibers. They showed several of the dresses. She said that one dress is basically made out of tofu. Sherri asked if she could eat it. Maggie’s dress was made out of cruelty-free silk. Whoopi wants to get the dress and wear it with pants.

The next segment was about “5 New Foods.” The “Supermarket Guru” said that people can’t afford to buy a car or pay their mortgage, but they are buying indulgences, like caramels. (?)
* Chief’s Choice Caramels: $4 for four ounces. Rated 93/100
* Budweiser and Clamato: Bill Geddie came out and tried it, saying it was good; Rated 96/100
* My Husband’s Nuts: Whoopi made a joke about the name that got bleeped. Rated 86/100 because it’s not in a resealable bag.
* Old Wisconsin Snack Bites Beef: 90 calories, but has MSG and sodium nitrate; 86/100
* O.N.E. Cashew Juice: Rated 92/100

Tristan Rogers appeared on the show to promote his role on General Hospital: Night Shift. He has known Whoopi for a long time, but have not seen each other in years. He was part of an organization that honored Whoopi and Frank Sinatra on the same night.

Tristan was on General Hospital for 12 years. He left because he was fed up with it. Then he went to unemployment. He came back to do Night Shift because of the story, where his character gets colon cancer. His own father died from colon cancer and that is part of the reason for doing the role. He hopes it encourages people to get tested.

He worked with Elizabeth Taylor when she was on General Hospital for one day. They brought in crates of pink Dom Pérignon champagne. She had him try some and gave him four glasses before the scene even started. The producer got mad at him for “messing around” and Taylor stuck up for him.

Among other things, the author writes that “Whatever the reason, daytime talk shows have showcased some of the most sophisticated (as well as some of the most mind-numbingly stupid) conversations about what’s happening on the political stage this season.” She also goes on to recap some of discussions they have had on The View and notes Sherri Shepherd’s increased involvement in the political discussions. She also mentions the hard questioning of John McCain, as well as Bill Clinton’s interview.

The article also discusses The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Rachael Ray Show and their role in the process.

Today on The View, it was the four main hosts and no Barbara Walters. Whoopi Goldberg is sick, so she gave each of the co-hosts some hand cleanser.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that election-itis is going around. Whoopi said that people are getting political fatigue. They showed a video of a man introducing Joe Biden at a rally and accidentally calling him “John McCain.” Elisabeth said that we can make it because we are “only one menstrual cycle away” from the election. Joy said that would be an eternity for her (Joy).

Whoopi asked if it is fair to go after Obama’s links, when all the candidates have links. She said that there were several members in the Congress who were KKK members. Should we be concerned with people who associated with them? Elisabeth said we should investigate connections on both sides. They talked about Ayers again and Elisabeth said she wants Obama to be truthful about working with Ayers and Whoopi said that he was when it was brought up at the Democratic debate.

Joy brought up about how Sarah Palin’s husband was a member of the Alaska International Party. Elisabeth said that should be investigated. Joy said it is not patriotic to want to secede. Elisabeth said that she would bet her blond highlights that if you lined the candidates next to one another and their connections, you would not chose Obama to be president. Sherri said that all of this is exhausting. She said that all relationships are all so incestuous, noting that the board Obama that sat on with Ayers, was run by the Annenberg Foundation and Annenberg’s widow is supporting McCain. Elisabeth said it is just not Ayers, it is all the other connections. Joy wants to know if the American people really give a damn about all this when they can’t pay their mortgage.

Cindy McCain said that she “got a cold chill” when Obama voted against troop funding and Whoopi said that she wasn’t telling the whole story. Whoopi said that there was a bill about troops to bring the troops home, which had fat on it. Obama voted for it, McCain did not. The president vetoed it and then McCain voted for it and Obama did not. Elisabeth said that we should have clean bills so that we know where people stand.

A Florida sheriff is in trouble for calling Barack Obama “Barack Hussein Obama” at a rally. Joy said that has been happening a lot at stump speeches and McCain should tell them to stop that. Whoopi said that she thinks he is trying to do that and Elisabeth said that the campaign said that they don’t condone that rhetoric.

Politics has made its way into classrooms. There is a video of a grade school class singing a song about Obama. Joy said it looked like a cult. A middle school teacher was suspended for incorporating Obama into a drill. Elisabeth said it does not belong in schools and the teachers need to practice restraint. Joy said that if you take it out of schools, you should take it out of churches as well. Elisabeth said that most churches opt out of political discussion for tax reasons. Sherri said that politicians come to Black churches often to encourage voter turn-out. Joy said that both sides should be brought in. Elisabeth said that Madonna even brought up politics. Joy said that she can say whatever she wants.

There is a new PSA that discourages people from using the phrase “That’s So Gay.”

Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Cheryl Burke has been criticized for gaining weight, but she only gained five pounds. Whoopi said her breast weighs more than that. There was also a photo of Eva Longoria in the paper that called her “slimmed down,” and Elisabeth said that now they are just keeping track of how many ounces people are gaining and losing.

Elisabeth said that Whoopi has been right all along about the economic problems. They showed several clips of Whoopi arguing that there should be relief given to the homeowners in the form of a partial amnesty. Whoopi said it is not McCain’s idea, as she has been talking about it for awhile. She said that people should not dismiss what they say on the show. Elisabeth said that McCain wants to reassess all the values of the homes. Whoopi said that won’t work and they should do 25% straight across the board relief. Joy said that the trillion dollar bailout could have paid for everything, including universal health care. Joy said that people are scared that bailing out people is going to be socialism, but it is capitalism if you bail out the banks, which they are okay with.

Angela Bassett appeared on the show to promote her role on ER. She plays the “tough new boss who terrorizes the staff.” She loves the role and has a great time doing. Joy said that they are lucky to have her on the show. Bassett said it is hard to remember all the medical lingo. Her husband, Courtney B Vance, will be joining ER as well. They have been married 11 years this weekend. Her children are “wonderful.” They showed a photo of them with her when she got her star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Sherri asked about old cast members coming back for the series finale, like Noah Wylie and George Clooney. Bassett says that if Clooney is coming on, they aren’t telling her.

Bassett was in How Stella Got Her Grove Back with Whoopi in 1998. Bassett said it was “so much fun” to work with Whoopi. Joy said that they look like teenagers in the movie. Whoopi said that they had a great cast and it was fun to do. When the cast got to Jamaica they “lost their minds.” Bassett will soon be turning 50. Sherri asked how she looks so young. Bassett said it is great lighting and make-up, as well as joy.
