I Cannot Escape The View

You may recall that I wrote last week that I was going on a short vacation trip. I went to visit my parents at their cottage in Ohio. It is in a quite small rural area and a trip there is always relaxing because I feel separated from the world. Although they have cable and the internet (finally without dial-up!), there is really never enough time to notice those things, because I am too busy swimming, reading, and relaxing. Thus, the perfect way to spend the first few days of The View hiatus, because I would not even think of the show once. Right? Wrong.
There is a small newspaper for the area. Actually, I guess it is more of a newsletter. It features happenings in the area, like parades and fairs. And then there are repeat columnists who write about gardening, retirement, etc. I like to read the paper for its simplicity and detachment from real-world events.
I got the paper at the store on my first day there. I glanced at it while eating my lunch and there on page 17 was a columnist talking about the fight between Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck over the N-word! I don’t want to repeat what she wrote because I felt her whole article (which was about several related topics) was divisive and fairly racist, despite her closing line that “it would benefit us all if we’d . . . work together toward improving (our world).” (she should really take her own advice). And I really don’t want to re-open this topic for debate again as I think it has all been said.
The point of my story is that The View is inescapable. No matter how small of a town I go to, no matter how deep into the country, there are still people talking about it. Maybe it is still more popular than we all believe?

Beautiful pic Winnie! I live in a small town, and on my local radio, the View is rarely a topic of discussion. It was when Rosie was on, because we only get right wing radio here.

Winnie,
Thanks for sharing a small part of your short time away.
The photo is wonderful, looks very peaceful.
Very pondering thought,..just how popular The View still is.

Winnie, you are probably right. There may be people watching the view, like myself. I am not expecting “Rocket Scientists” or “Mensa Members” to be sitting in the hosts seats.I watch the show for entertainment and relaxed conversation. I love Rosie and never missed a day of her “moderator” position. But there were days ( too many ) where I felt ill at ease and upset.
Yup, I get “antsy” over each host, on any given day. But all and all, I think THE VIEW is enjoyed and very popular by those of us who do not sit and watch as a critic. I can watch or fast forward ( thank you DVR ) . I enjoy Winnie’s blog and all of our great commentators. I have learned a lot from many of you, in my ripe old age !!!!!!

Winnie, your mini-vacation sounds awesome!
My laptop broke and half my keyboard wasn’t working so I could read all these posts but not respond.
So I’m just getting to catch up on the site now.
That cottage sounds very peaceful.
I think whatever show that the n word discussion came up like that on probably would have made the news, it’s nothing special about the View. It’s one of those discussions people sometimes want to have and wait for the opportunity to come up that will iniate dialogue on it.

I am wondering how the ratings are. Even tough I know ratings don’t reflect people like me who have never been counted. I had it on for a few minutes this morning, but after watching it from the very first show, I have trouble watching it now. I seldom do. I may tune in if I see a guest that I like. It is a shame that the show has become what it has become and I feel Bill Getty is the reason. I miss the days of Meredith, Joy, Star, and Lisa. Not much drama but lots of good conversation!
