It’s Official: Rosie will not return to The View
ABC made the official announcement today that Rosie O’Donnell will not be returning to The View.
From Brian Frons, the president of Disney-ABC’s Daytime Television Group:
We had hoped that Rosie would be with us until the end of her contract three weeks from now, but Rosie has informed us that she would like an early leave. Therefore, we part ways, thank her for her tremendous contribution to ‘The View’ and wish her well.
From Barbara Walters:
I brought Rosie to the show. Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at ‘The View.’ I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate relationship will not change.
From Rosie:
I’m extremely grateful. It’s been an amazing year and I love all three women.
My analysis:
Very disappointed, but not surprised. She made it very clear on her blog that she had no intention of going back.

so sad… i wish rosie would have stayed until June 21. She deserved a great send-off… not what happened on wednesday. i hope she moves on to something bigger and better.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Hmmm.
Let’s see, RO acts like the loud, obnoxious, ignorant bully she is; gets smacked by EH (who’s been taking garbage from her from day one), skulks away like a typical bully, then cries that her widdle feewings are hurt.
boo. freakin’. hoo.
This is just sooo typical of these liberals. They’re fine as long as they get to filibuster, scream and abuse. The second someone stands up to them, they cut and run.
Then we hear that one of her writers gets escorted out of ABC for defacing photos of EH. How childish.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
That really stinks. Rosie was the best thing that happened to that show and now I will no longer watched it.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Very unprofessional. Such drama over nothing really. For someone with such controversial opinions which she feels compelled to air constantly, she certainly has a thin skin. A lot of people supported her over the past year, The View was good to her and has undoubtedly launched her into her next venture and this is how she repays her fans and the show.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
I think the biggest mistake that Ro has made thus far is actually expecting people to treat her as a human being and that she has feelings like everyone else. It was her time to move on and let the other people on the view grow in their roles, I see no problem with that. I hope Rosie finds a healthier outlet/show for her personal views(that i happen to agree with to a great extent).
May 25th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Personally, I hope RO gets the serious therapy she so desperately needs - preferably someplace without sharp objects.
May 25th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
Bill,
Rosie has had a LOT of leeway on the View - it was her choice to be a public person and to state her views vigorously. I don’t see in what way she hasn’t been treated as a “human being” with feelings. People that are so darn sensitive should keep to themselves. Also, keep in mind she’s been pretty harsh to a lot of people in her comments. I’m not sure what the current PC rule is but it seems to be not to attack people who are not in the public eye a la Imus - that doesn’t apply to her.
May 25th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
kwashington,
Yeah, I agree. From the wacky-weed conspiracy nonsense, to the downright seditious remarks, to the ching-chong incident, she has shown herself to be a hateful, spiteful, bully.
If any conservative ever did one tenth what she did, he/she would be off the air in a NY minute.
Remember, there’s one rule for conservatives, another for libs.
May 25th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
We no longer have to wince at the gay-left-wing-poor-us-hand-out topics/humor that would spew from Rosie’s mouth. Somebody, (Barbara) should have told her that not everything on Rosie’s demented mind needed to air on the network. Rosie needs to go to the LOGO network where she will feel at home. I’m afraid they will reject her too as Rosie’s topics are old and tired, just like her.
Some of us are right-wing-straight-hard-working and love our President and our country, like Elizabeth Hasselbeck. Liz’s defense of the Republican Party is fresh and refreshing on network TV. Keep it up!!
As for Rosie, I say Bu-bye… Bubye.
She was not ready for prime-time in the past, is not now in the present nor will she ever be.
May 25th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
I’m sorry that Rosie isn’t finishing out her contract. It makes her look like she is giving up, or running away.
I think Rosie knew and knows full well what the MSN would do and say about her personal “View”.
I think there is a lot going on with Rosie that people don’t know about, and may not understand.
I don’t share her views at all. I do however have empathy. I wish her well.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
She gave up because Fox is filtering and twisting her words, and then Elisabeth came out this week and parroting Fox News’ accusations acting she doesn’t know that Rosie contributed money and time to help wounded soldiers. A “liberal” doing her best. What significant thing has Elisabeth done? Go to the White House and have dinner with the President and the Queen on taxpayers’ money. Conservatism at its most ironic. So ultimately if Rosie stays and fights she get characterized as “bullying” a pregnant woman. If leaves, she has extra time to rest and spend time with her family before doing her next gig. A simple decision.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
kc,
If she’s worried about fox twisting her words, she’d better stay off tv. It is possible to have a reasonable discussion on differing views, after all that is the point of the show. The thing I disliked about Rosie is that she’s incapable of doing this - if she were she wouldn’t be characterized as a bully. She’s made some pretty cutting remarks to Elisabeth over the past year which Elisabeth for the most part let go - Wednesday I guess was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:22 pm
Rosie’s nothing more than a mean, loud, ignorant, obnoxious bully who has filibustered that show every day she’s been there.
EH finally had it, and gave her “what-fer”, and like any schoolyard bully, RO slithered away and hid under her bed.
One doesn’t need to watch Fox to see it.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
So sorry to hear about the Ro-nut. She was such a shining example of today’s tinfoil hat brigade.
After bullying EH for months by drowning out dissent with sheer volume and hatred, EH finally fights back and the bully becomes a victim.
Now what will I watch to get my daily dose of paranoid conspiracy theories, Bush Derangement Syndrome rantings, absurd moral equivalence, jihad appeasement, and white-hot hatred of anyone who disagrees?
Oh, yeah. Joy Behar’s still around.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Y’know, I think I would’ve paid real money to see EH say something to RO like, “would you like a nice, hot steaming cup of STFU to go with your whup-a__ sandwich?”
May 25th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
R-i-G
Joy’s just a blithering idiot. In terms of volume or nastiness, I don’t think she quite rises to the level of RO.
In terms of stupidity, that’s another matter.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Well it’s official….Rosie has decided to not come back….
Ok, let’s sum up her year….loud, obnoxious, condecending towards EH and all Republicans, hates anything about Bush, supports Iran, will not ever come out against radical Muslims, hates Christians, etc., etc., etc….
And now we are to feel sorry for her….not for that limousine liberal….
Believe me….that loudmouth will be back on the air sooner than you think….
May 25th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Agreed, jdawg.
The show needs some serious re-tooling. Rosie was a giant band-aid brought on for a ratings boost before she predictably imploded from the weight of her own ignorance.
Now, they can start finding the show’s real purpose. If they truly want a panel of fascinating women with different life perspectives, start with Camille Paglia and Peggy Noonan.
If they want to continue down the LCD path forged by Rosie, they should just replace her with Cindy Sheehan.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
By the time Rosie told Elisabeth she could continue to spew her “conservative crap,” I lost what last shred of respect I had for her. Elisabeth never talked like that to Rosie - with that alternating vile and condescending tone Rosie would use.
Let’s see: Outing Clay Aiken who still says he’s not gay; then there’s Kelly Ripa, Donald Trump, the Asian community …
I’d say she pretty much took a good warm $hit on The View and left just in time to really leave her mark.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
Rosie will always be characterized as a bully just from people repeating it ad nauseum. Despite that, she has a lot of fans who will follow her away from The View. She won’t change to fit anyone’s expectations, and that is why she boosted ratings. Let see the new and improved bad-ass Elisabeth spin her magic as moderator and see how well she does.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
Crap is crap. What else to call it.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Yes, well, I’m not a conservative. But I know how to behave. I have conservative friends and coworkers, and I’m also a “majority” in my thinking (where I live and work). But I show them some semblance of respect.
Good riddance, Rosie.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
kc,
How would you define a bully then? Someone who belittles others which is exactly what she did to those such as Elisabeth who didn’t agree with her. You certainly can’t say she was warm and open to those who disagreed with her.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
R-i-G,
Rosie WAS the tool…
Now, they need to really balance that program and get someone on with a brain. I agree with your choices, but I’d love to see a Michelle Malkin on there. That would really bring out the BDS!
kc,
RO is a bully because of the way she acts, not because of what others say. She has filibustered that show from the beginning, treating everyone else like so much dog-meat.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:23 pm
Melanie,
Unfortunately, in this day and age, it is very rare to find a liberal who knows how to behave and treat others with respect. I had a college professor who was very liberal in her views and we would have discussions that were very nice and polite. The bottom line is we were able to find some common ground even though we disagreed on many things.
Believe me when I say, thanks.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
jdawg,
I’m actually embarrassed by Rosie. What I don’t believe is most of her conspiracy theories. And when she brought up Carter’s remarks about Bush (which Carter then backtracked on), Barbara Walters said to her, “Carter was not a good president.” Did anybody see Rosie’s face? I truly felt badly for her. On that, I’d like to say that I admire Carter as a person and for his intentions. But I agree that he has done many more good things as a former president than as a president. But I was embarrassed again when Rosie was blasting Bush’s ratings in polls (and trust me, I’m not exactly thrilled with Bush, but I wont’ get into that on this forum) b/c she forgot (didn’t know?) that our own Carter had the very same ratings. She said “pundints” (with an N) when talking to Elisabeth. She shouldn’t be speaking for us. There are better out there. She’s just famous and rich and funny sometimes.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:43 pm
Melanie,
I think Kirsten Powers is much better at advancing a liberal view (even tho I disagree most of the time), because she doesn’t filibuster like Rosie, she listens to people, she’s much better informed and rejects the nutballs and kooks.
I was in the Marines when Carter was President. He was not well liked for many reasons. I do think he should show a bit more decorum as a former President than he does, though. His intentions may have been good, but the results, well, not so good, in my opinion. I think much of what we are going through now is a direct result of many of his policies - especially in the area of foriegn policy.
I like Bush to a point on nat’l defense, but immigration - well, I agree, don’t get me started ;-}
As for the conspiracy theories, I would agree with you. What’s very unfortunate is that it seems at least a third of the Democratic party believes them…
May 25th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Good riddance to her ~ now I can enjoy the show again, as long as Joy keeps her mouth shut!!!
May 25th, 2007 at 6:57 pm
Rosie’s gone, CONFETTI!!!!!!
Who’s the coward now.
May 25th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
Geez, I’m so sick of this “Oh poor Rosie” like a previous post said with such controversial opinions she has a thin skin. It seemed like the View became The Rosie Show. It always seemed that the only opinion that counted was Rosie’s, no one else was allowed to dare to question her “facts” Grow up Rosie, free speech applies to all, not just you. I for one won’t miss her.
May 25th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Now if they would just get rid of Elizabeth the show would be watchable again. I have never liked her. When Lisa Ling and Meredith both were missing, the show was bound to implode.
What happened to the four women, different generations, different ethnicities concept?
May 25th, 2007 at 11:36 pm
Wow rosie, what a mistake….
I am disapointed with her descion to leave the view earlier then was pre arranged. To just give up like that really negates all the great work she has done thus far… while i understand that her opinions where controversial in the US. She was a great barometer for international sentiment towards the US and the war. Wheather the republicans agree or not we do live in a global community, and the damage that has been caused by the current adminstartion has forever tainted international sentiment towards the US.
While i can understand many americans believed some her opinions to be harmful and ‘unamerican” The true nature of democracy should allow & embrace disent from its people, otherwise it really can no longer be called a democracy….
May 26th, 2007 at 12:18 am
furthermore…. just to address the key reason for rosies departure. The question was “who are the terrorists?” EH called this a rhetorical question… and I agree. there is really no question who the terrorists are…. Only in the US could this question still be concidered controversial. It is the general International concensus the current US administration are “terrorists”.
Can anyone please explain why this still a fringe view in the US?
May 26th, 2007 at 4:06 am
God riddance Rosie,
Although I am a registered Republican I do not agree with all republican views. I follow their foreign policy and agree with their lower taxes and less welfare. But I have very democratic views on social issues. Rudy is my hero..But Rosie has pushed her views down our throats for the last time. She does not know the meaning of respecting others views. America is what it is because we are allowed to express our opinions but Rosie acts like a dictator–no one else is allowed to have an opinion. It is a shame that she has been allowed to represent the gay community…Most gay people that I know do not agree with her on many issues..But most of all they do not agree with her mannerisms. She has showed that she has very thin skin..The first time that someone stood up for their views (right or wrong) she caved…Rosie go get the therapy that you have so needed for the last few months…Please don’t do a Britney and shave your head,,,Get the counselling that is obviously needed for the anger and hate that is bottled up inside of you.
May 26th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
I disagreed with much of what Rosie said, but I still enjoyed her (when her meds are right, I guess). But part of her huge ratings, which she brags about way too much, are actually her detractors trying to find more ammo to use against her (and it’s not too hard). Her reaction to what happened with EH is scary, and reading her blog, it really seems to be a meltdown. EH has had to return after the vicious attacks against her throughout Rosie’s ‘reign’. Many attacks were quite personal, not just against her politics. (ie: “You are young, and you are very wrong” or how about “stop blathering on with your opinion…” and many, many more). Yet Rosie can’t bring herself to return. I’m glad, because I didn’t want to see her get a huge, happy send-off–look at the birthday party she got. No one else has had such a celebration–a whole show devoted to her birthday. WTF? While watching the infamous feud again, I realize how her answers to EH’s comebacks often didn’t really make much sense. She’s come unglued. I read “Find Me” and got more insight into her unstable mental health. Lots of kids have tough childhoods, but to be so focused on it at age 45 is not good.
May 26th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
“It is the general International concensus the current US administration are “terrorists”.
Can anyone please explain why this still a fringe view in the US?”
Because it is held mostly by the lunatic left-wing fringe who hate Bush, Hate America and want America to lose in Iraq. I really don’t give two craps what the “international consensus” is - we got attacked on 9/11. If you think the current admin are terrorists, and you want people like bin Ladin to win, then I suggest you get out of this country and go somewhere that is more to your liking - like Iran, or Cuba, or Venezuela.
And, yes, I DO question the patriotism of those who hate America and want America to lose in Iraq.
May 27th, 2007 at 4:19 am
thanks for that jdawg (??) but as of yet there have not been any tangable links between 9/11 and iraq (and if you consider the majority of the international community as well as a growing mojority of your own US citizens to be “lunatic left wing….” then maybe it is time for you to check your premise).
Maybe you can explain this mysterious link between bin laden and iraq that justifies the invasion, occupation and slaughtering of innocient civilians. I mean we hear an awful lot about it but as of yet we still have no evidence.
Furthermore if you believe that the war in iraq has made america a safer place you are completely delusional…. it has only radicalized an entire new generations of muslims around the world, justifing their crazy jihad for them… WELL DONE!!!
May 27th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Elisabeth is no coward. She expresses her increasingly unpopular view with dignity, intelligence and class!
Rosie is classless.
Rosie is delusional.
Rosie is over the top dramatic and a big cry baby.
May 27th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
who says you can’t pray the gay away?
