John McCain on The View April 10th

Presidential candidate John McCain will appear on The View on Thursday April 10th. According to ABC, he last appeared on the show in November 2005, which is when the picture above was taken. (I love the way the ABC PR people cropped the photo to remove the former hosts from the photo).
UPDATE: Video of John McCain’s appearance on The View here
The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters, John McCain

Wow! I didn’t know Elisabeth was even with them back then.

My only comment is that, if they’re wise, they’ll let Sherri sit this one out.
She put her foot in her mouth when Mr. Obama was on and spoke of his intentions to increase taxes to the wealthy. She said something like - Barbara won’t like that..(I don’t recall her exact words).

# 1, I believe that Elisabeth started on the View when Lisa Lang left. Although I can’t remember exactly when that was.
Winnie may know.
I will look forward to seeing senator McCain. As well hearing his responses to what I hope are some thoughtful and tough questions.
I would like to hear his response to questions about our economy. Since he acknowledged he isn’t up to par on economics. I would want to know what he is doing to learn more. Who are, and who will be, his advisers in this area.
Another important area for me would be Iraq, however I pretty much am aware of his intentions concerning Iraq. I would like to ask though if there would be any scenario when he would say enough is enough, we are out of there.
I would also like to hear his ideas and plans on Foreign relations.

I’m betting that the View ladies will be a lot more professional with Sen. McCain than they were with Sen. Obama, which I think McCain deserves, but I thought Obama deserved better.

all of you should read this excellent article before McCain comes on the air:

I think Elisabeth started some time in 2003.

# 5 Meredith,
Thanks for the link. I read the article and I agree it is very good. Interesting and well thought out. Something to think about.

Elisabeth was officially named Lisa Lings replacement in November, 2003.
I can’t wait to see when McCain is on. I wonder if Elisabeth is going to do her adolescent cheerleader chants of ‘Go McCain!’
Lets hope Barbara doesn’t tell him that he’s sexy looking. Leave that to Elisabth. LOL

Elisabeth:
You should read Frank Rich’s piece in Sunday’s (March 6) New York Times about McCain & the war. It’s more nutritious than the junk food you get from Hannity.

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don’t):
1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has “evolved,” yet he’s continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1
2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain “will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”2
3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.3
4. McCain opposes a woman’s right to choose. He said, “I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned.”4
5. The Children’s Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children’s health care bill last year, then defended Bush’s veto of the bill.5
6. He’s one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a “second job” and skip their vacations.6
7. Many of McCain’s fellow Republican senators say he’s too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s erratic. He’s hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”7
8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.8
9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his “spiritual guide,” Rod Parsley, believes America’s founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a “false religion.” McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church “the Antichrist” and a “false cult.”9
10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

Why watch at all? It seems some of you already know all there is to know about McCain and certainly won’t be “listening” to his words tomorrow. This sort of attitude is exactly why NOTHING gets done in Washington regardless of the party in charge. If something does get passed it is usually not well thought out but just throwing darts to appear like they are paying attention. The media does not ask hard questions and the public doesn’t expect to hear any innovative ideas on how best to proceed. Instead most of you are h…bent on looking backwards and feeling justified doing so. When I listen to Barack talk I hear a guy that is desperately straddling the fence in fear of screwing up and losing his lead. You will get nothing new from this guy because the risks are far too great. The fault for lousy presidents is our fault. We do not want to hear the truth and they can’t bring themselves to tell us.

Susan Says:
“When I listen to Barack talk I hear a guy that is desperately straddling the fence in fear of screwing up and losing his lead. ”
That’s what I hear when I listen to McCain.

I THINK TODAY’S VIEW WITH HAVING PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN WENT VERY WELL. THE WOMEN OF THE VIEW WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL, NO ATTACKING, THEY TREATED HIM RESPECTFULLY. I LIKE HOW THEY STARTED OUT WITH HUMOR , SHOWING A CLIP FROM JAY LENO ABOUT HOW OBAMA FIDGETED WITH HIS CLOTHES WHILE ON THE VIEW. THE HUMOR OF THAT MENTIONED TODAY, MADE FOR A MORE RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE SHOW FOR ALL. WHAT I DID NOT LIKE WAS JOY BLURTING OUT THAT SHE HATED PRESIDENT BUSH. SHE SHE USE MORE TACT.
JOHN MCCAIN LOOKED GREAT. EVEN THOUGH THE GIRLS OF THE VIEW DID NOT TELL HIM HE WAS SEXY, HE WAS! I LIKED THE PINK TIE ON HIM.
I THINK JOHN MCCAIN DID VERY WELL. HE WAS ABLE TO SHOW HIS SENSE OF HUMOR, WHICH WE DON’T OFTEN GET TO SEE, AND HIS ABILITY TO REMAIN RELAXED AMONG 4 WOMEN FROM THE VIEW!
I ENJOYED THE SHOW, MCCAIN AND THE VIEW DID A GOOD JOB!

Why did they not ask him about the revelation in Cliff Schechter’s book that, in front of the press, in 1992, he called his wife a trollop and a cunt?
Does that omission disrespect half the people in the world or am I being ‘Elizabethan’?
April 10th, 2008 at 11:51 am
I thought John’s comment to WG about dressing up for him was very rude. He looked ticked off when Joy was questioning him. Thanks Joy for bringing up Rove. http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/03/is-rove-doing-stealth-work-for.html

# 13 YUCK! He looked like a walking corpse! He was wearing more makeup than all the ladies combined. He made BW look like a teenager.
April 10th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Seems to me WG didn’t seem to think it was that funny and I barely heard the audience laugh. He had a ton of makeup on. Yes he did look like a corpse IMO. I forgot to mention his combover. Face it John the hair just ain’t there anymore.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
McCain is being dishonest with the American public by hiding the fact that he’s as bald as an eagle. John changes positions more than Paris Hilton
He was against Bush tax cuts now he’s for them. He was against MLK holiday now he’s for it. He was against the religious right now he’s for them. John ’s favorite shoe must be the flip-flop.
:)

I did get to see some of the show, although not all of it. I missed the first 20 to 25 min. due to weather interruptions in my area. So I guess I missed whatever Senator McCain said about Whoopi dressing up for him. Although I do know that there were prior jokes concerning this subject between the other host and Whoopi, on a prior show. read this in a recap. So I’m sure that was meant to be a joke.
I myself thought senator McCain looked fine. I could care less about his hair, or lack thereof. I really didn’t notice makeup either, but I wasn’t looking for things like that.
I don’t want to put anyone down who noticed,..just I did not note those things.
I thought it was a good show, and that the hosts did ask some good questions. Which is what is important to me. I haven’t yet made up my mind for whom I’m going to vote.
Yes he has changed his thoughts on some things over the years, like, M.L.K. Holiday.
That doesn’t bother me, for I have changed some of my thoughts and ideas over the years.
What I think needs to be ask is why have you changed your thoughts on this or that. As Whoopi ask about M.L.K. Holiday. …great question I thought.
I liked hearing his responses to different things.

I’m looking for a tad bit more integrity. The whole kissing the ass of the Christan right is a little much for me. McCain is rather old and gross. He is also known to be a very angry old man.
“Why did they not ask him about the revelation in Cliff Schechter’s book that, in front of the press, in 1992, he called his wife a trollop and a cunt?
Does that omission disrespect half the people in the world or am I being ‘Elizabethan’?”
OH MY! That’s TMI

September 17th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
I have no respect for any of the cast of The View…what a trashy biased way to treat McCain compared to Obama.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
even though the view with the exception of mrs hassalbeck has made no paws about being for oboma if i say IF yall are going to invite and interview both McCain and oboma we feel that you should of shown a fair and balanced interview with both of them but instead it was a shamefull display of exstream predgadish towards one and i feel that you have lost the respect of a great deal of your viewers.i say you failed to ask the true and hard questions to oboma and frankly kissed his ring. shame on you times are to serious not to be fair and balanced to all. i know i miss-spelled some words sry. but you get the jest don’t you.?

I am really disapointed at the total lack of respect that you showed Senator McCain and his wife. You are VERY good at showing all of us that you are for Senator Obama, but I was hoping that as professionals you would atleast show some respect.
You gave Obama and his wife this grand reception and had your stones ready to throw when McCain and his wife came on. Your body language spoke volumes about your dislike for him. The fact that he came on knowing the kind of treatment he was going to recieve made me respect him even more. And how hypacritical of any of you to question him on the number of homes he has. Good for Cindy’s family for living the American dream and having sucess in their lives.
I have been very fair in listing to both sides in this election, more than any other election in my life, because I want to make the best decission for me and my family and the one thing that I know for sure is that I will NEVER watch The View again. You have lost any respect that I ever had for any of you. I am not alone, everyone I talk to says the same thing. The main stream media is doing the exact opposite of what they want to do, and that is make people dislike McCain. I think they are making Americans mad at the unfair treatment of the canidates, and this is backfiring on them and having more people look at McCain.
I wish Sara Palin would come on your show because she would kick some STUPID DISRESPECTFUL butt!!!!

“I wish Sara Palin would come on your show because she would kick some STUPID DISRESPECTFUL butt!!!!”
I don’t think so “Charlie”.

I am very disappointed in how all of the women acted especially Barbara Walters. While watching the show I thought this is just like high school where the girls if they didn’t like someon they would just pick on them terribly. I am an independent and vote for the person and the worst thing they did for Obama was to treat the other side this way. When old women come of caddy and mean it looks so bad . Barbara Walters I always respected and all the wonderful years of work has gone down the drain because now I only remember her by this. I expected Woppi to act the way she did with the faces she made because she wasn’t brought up with parents that taught her respect so I could consider the sourse. I do believe that if you have made the money she has that being around educated people that were raised properly that she would try to rise above. I really do not know women like this most of the women I know are like Sara Palin they reserve thoughts that are mean spirited. This show made me decide to vote for McCain because all of the women he surrounds himself with are really nice. I am sorry Hillary lost to Obama because she was the democrats only hope!

I am extremely surprised and disappointed. Barbara Walters has always been my idol. I have had the utmost admiration and awe for her (over 30 yrs) until The McCains appeared on HER show. Regardless of the difference in their views, they deserved to be treated with the same respect that Miss Walters shows all of her other guests. I couldn’t believe her lack of professionalism, I have NEVER seen her act so rudely and have watched her as often as possible over the years. As others have noted, you might expect (not approve) .such actions from Joy and Whoppi, but never BW. I will not watch “The View” again.

The treatment that was given to a Presidential candidate on your show was disrespectful and appalling. How idiotic that you would bring up the financial successes of John McCain and make them out to be a bad thing while all of you are very well off. How bias that you didn’t hold Obama to the same type of negative hatred and political assassination. I used to be an Obama supporter but after your unpatriotic treatment of John McCain, I will NOT be voting for Obama. Thank you for showing the nation what is really wrong with the far left. Once again we are exposed to the militant behavior of Obama supporters. Barbara, I have always felt that The View was a very strange place for you to spend the latter part of your courier. A highly respected well educated American journalist sitting among hate mongers, is a new low for you.
