Journalist Laura Ling, Sister of Lisa Ling, Detained in North Korea
Laura Ling, the sister of former View host Lisa Ling, has been detained by North Korean officials on the border of North Korea and China. According to the AP, Laura, along with another journalist, Euna Lee, were “detained by North Korea for ignoring warnings to stop shooting footage of the reclusive country.”
I am familiar with Laura’s work on the Current TV channel and she was likely filming something for them at the time of her detention. According to the organization “Reporters without Borders,” Ling and Lee were last seen on March 17th and the North Koreans claim that they “illegally crossed into North Korea from China while shooting video along the river.”
I first was alerted to the story on Twitter, where Sherri Shepherd posted, “Lisa Ling’s sister is being detained in Korea - they’re hoping Clinton can intercede - please pray for Laura Ling’s safe return home.”

I will be praying for a positive outcome…everyone please join in…
March 19th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Me too. And Joey , if that is you, wonderful to have you pop in to lead off the prayer….
March 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Joey, are you stepping your toe back into the WTV waters?
I really hope this turns out well. I had completely forgotten Lisa had a sister. I’ve always thought North Korea was a much bigger threat than Iraq. I hope the State Department is working overtime to bring Laura and her fellow journalist home.
March 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
How frightening. I hope all is resolved safely, and soon.

Ti’s me…I really missed you all and knew that this could be a base for coming together to pray, hope, meditate….whatever we need to do to ensure the safety of these wonderful women…

Yes, I’m back, because of the kindness, mixed with the intellect here…it is rare…it is to be recognized…and the wee hiss once in a while is only human…

Hey Kelly (you are a treat!)
I can’t even imagine the fear these women are enduring!!! What can we do….I’m in Canada and have contacted CBC so t least that’s a start…
March 19th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I saw the headline on CNN today but had no idea it was Lisa’s sister.
This from a JoongAngDaily:
A high-ranking government official in Seoul suggested the likely scenarios are that either the North could release the Americans with a mere warning, or the North would wait until the United States sends a delegation to negotiate their release. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on record about this matter.
In 1996, Bill Richardson, currently New Mexico governor, helped American Evan Hunziker come home after three months. Hunziker was accused of spying after swimming in the Yalu River, which also borders North Korea and China.
The current incident comes only weeks before North Korea is scheduled to launch a communications satellite. Washington, along with Seoul and Tokyo, believes the satellite launch is a disguised ballistic missile test. All three say the launch will be in violation of a United Nations Security Council resolution, which says the North “shall suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile programme.”

I think under the circumstances, we should have a WTV reunion, (hey Rain) set aside our differences with the “The View” and focus on how we can all make a difference…I know I sound Pollyanna but I will not change…
March 19th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
so so sad I pray they are both are returned safe.
hi joey
March 19th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

March 19th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
I think sending good vibes is the same as praying. So, whatever you call it, I will think about/pray for their safe return.

*smooches and big hugs* welcome back Joey.
I made some martinis for you….. shaken not stirred.
March 19th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Joey, help is here. You must check in on Aileen’s blog and check out the pot browinie 911 call. Aileen swears it’s Rog.
Had any blue cheese olives lately or do you consider olives in your martinis enough food for the day? Seriously Joey, I hear Canada is running low on gin. Was being away from us that traumatic?
March 19th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Thank you so much Roger,
From Kelly, Di, Bern, Susieq, mibi, miamivision, random musings, and so many more, what can we do? Women need to live freely and be able to speak to our challenges without being threatened.
March 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
I am hoping and praying for a fast release and safe return home.
Joey, so glad to “see” you !
March 19th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Odd the comfort here…I’m so glad to be back and I love Diane’s visioning…perhaps we can care for others…
and then a wee tini could be possible
March 19th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Laura Ling like her sister Lisa, are true journalists, unlike some of the bimbos they have “reporting” the news on some news outlets. Because of people like them a lot of injustices are shown to the world that might not ever be known. Why isn’t this story being more widely reported?
March 19th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Susieq,
What a thoughtful question, I don’t know… Years ago, I know I would have suggested that it was due to a lack of concern for female journalists…now I wonder if it isn’t because of just avoidance of one more global political mess!
March 19th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
#28 susieq–
Why isn’t this story being more widely reported?
I think the press is being quiet about it because of security reasons. We dont need the press being provocative and being insulting to North Korea. Remember how bad they were when Iran captured some British sailors? The press were acting all macho, they better not try that with America sailors….. we dont need that now…. not when Americans are in harms way.
They can make a huge story after they get released…… a press “blackout” is a good idea.
March 19th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Joey, if Dubya was still in office, I would say you’re exactly right but I think President Obama and SOS Clinton will take this seriously. Since tomorrows View is taped I guess we will have to wait till Monday for the panel to weigh in. I’m curious what Elisabeth will have to say. I swear if she even somehow tries to lay this at President Obama’s door I will reach through the TV and strangle her with her own hair, or Sherri’s wig, whatever will do the best job.
March 19th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Okay, I will breathe and pray and vision (thanks diane) and I know I won’t be alone. But the reality (this time not a show) is it could be a bad situation for these women.
March 19th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
And it really is Joey and I do love my Tinis and blue cheese olives but …help me out…what can we do??
March 20th, 2009 at 8:44 am
Joey: Nice to see you back! What can we do? I am not sure, but if this story doesn’t get to the media, this is BAD - perhaps we can get the word out at other sites, where they take comments.
I am just so thankful, more than ever, that I was born and raised in the USA! As women, I just think we are more free here than anywhere else in the world.
Just my 2 cents.
Y’all have a great day! I’m about to get to work. CYA later, my gators! *lol*
March 20th, 2009 at 8:54 am
I am hoping for the safe return of Lisa Ling and Euna Lee.
waving to joey!
March 20th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Thanks Winnie,
Although I did read about this the other day, I had no idea that this was Lisa’s sister.
My thoughts,& prayers are with them both, and their families.
Hi joey, nice to read your comments AGAIN.
Thanks Kelly for the article.
March 20th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I say these are brave young women. Safe return.
March 21st, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Sorry, I posted this on the first blog with BW’s story, I had forgotten about THIS one Winnie had put up 2 days ago.
The story about Lisa Ling’s sister finally hit the media - lots of stories today on this - perhaps it was our efforts that got this story more attention today (?)
Click on my name and the NYTimes one comes up.
Have a nice weekend folks!
Have a nice weekend

March 21st, 2009 at 5:20 pm
no - YOU have a nice weekend.
I saw ABC news - they interviewed Bill Richardson AND mentioned the “rocket” launch.
We were spot on again.
