Joy Behar Hosts Larry King Live and Her Co-Hosts Call In (video)

by Winnie McCarthy

Joy Behar hosted Larry King Live tonight. During the last twenty minutes of the show, they discussed the N-word argument that took place on The View last week. Here are video clips of the discussion.

In part one, the panel, which included Ben Stein, Fran Drescher, and Nancy Giles, discuss the issue. In part two, Whoopi Goldberg calls in to the show to respond to something Nancy said and in part three Elisabeth Hasselbeck calls in to respond to a comment that Fran made about her.

  1. Stacee Says:

Awww how sweet. Bitsy took time out of watching Sean Vannity to call in. Nice plug for his show.
Wonder what Whoopi was watching before she called. I’m sure it would have been important to tell everyone.

  2. Sandy Woodward Says:

I think Whoopi was listening on the phone for sometime before her cue - because after she supposedly rang off she spoke up again.

Joy was doing such a great job before the BG orchestrated promotion of The View. I did not like that Joy interupted Fran to let EH finish. Fran Drescher and Nancy Giles and Ben Stein were prearranged guests. Obviously those call-ins were prearranged, unfair that the prebooked guests were not given a heads up.

I bet tomorrow EH doesn’t say she was watching Sean H. I bet she will be plugging something like ABC’s I Survived a Japanese Game Show.

  3. ShannonP Says:

EH saying she was watching Hannity, I really do think she is paid by Fox. Why else would that have even came up?

  4. ShannonP Says:

And I thought I heard Joy say to EH at the end when she was signing off “okay honey”, pretty sure of it.
I don’t go around saying honey to people I’m not affectionate toward or that I’m faking liking.
That is why I think there will never be the “smackdown” that everyone thinks Joy is always on the verge of.

  5. Sandy Woodward Says:

Totally agree with you ShannonP. She also said something about seeing her tomorrow. Elisabeth is coddled.

Yes EH is on the FOX payroll — I doubt she does anything for free.

I doubt she will ever have to explain the meaning of the n word to her daughter. But I am sure she will have explain many of her actions.

  6. Stacee Says:

Yeah, it was weird just out of the blue saying “I was in the middle of watching Hannity…” Like why would you say that? I think she just may well be getting paid to plug that show.
I wonder if Joy thought “oh that’s nice, she would rather watch Hannity than a show I’m on.(remember, they all love one another, smooch smooch kissy kissy). What an act.

I don’t think Fran should have apologized to her. Bitsy has a lot of nerve getting ticked and talking about “women supporting women” when she talked trash about Gloria Steinem and Hillary Clinton. What a two faced hypocrite.
Oh and I recall her suggesting Hillary’s tears were fake, so her taking umbrage is a little laughable.

Oh and come on, like she was really watching the Hannity show and just happened to drop in when Fran made her comment. Please. It was planned. But gotta milk the N word contreversy all you can. Too bad Joy did not bring the “Audition” book. That would have been a major two-fer!

In the clip I saw, Joy looked more relaxed. Or it could have been the atmosphere. Maybe I’ll catch the show in it’s entirety later tonite.

  7. rainlillie Says:

Wow! Winnie you’re quick! Thanks for the video.

  8. christina Says:

It’s crazy how you can hate someone so much you’ve never met and has never been rude or nasty to anyone that would only lead me to one conclusion for the reason of your disdain. Tell me again why you hate her so much. Maybe it’s because she’s pretty.

  9. Michael Says:

    christina Says:
    Maybe it’s because she’s pretty.

    The green headed monster.

I’ve always thought that. Otherwise why would they care what her hubby makes, or the cost of their condo. It’s not like EH is making any laws or committing crimes.

  10. Marthe Says:

babblity-babblity-blah-blah-blah. Lol, I don’t like the bitty one cuz she has that fake friendly smile that doesn’t reach her eyes and yet thinks she is great because she ONCE played a softball game against a team of mentally challenged kids and wow how they bonded![I have not fact-checked if she has ever played any such charity events.]

She also reminds me of a girl in college, who, when our professor said, remember your papers are due on Wednesday, chirped up to say. no the due date is Monday!

  11. Sunny Says:

Wow. Ms. Hasselbeck sure is sassy when she is on the phone in the comfort of her $3.5 million condo with her unemployed husband whispering talking points (or more likely writing them out). Hmm, maybe her snotty and bold comments to Fran D. has something to do with Frannie being good buddies with Rosie O’Donnell?? Hmm.

And to come on and plug Con Vanity…give me a break. I can’t believe ABC lets her get away with the continual plugging of a rival network.

  12. Dee Says:

Mean girls posse on the board tonight! You don’t like us cuz we are cool and pretty and your not…you geeks are just jealous!

EH has so many ugly attributes that have nothing to do with her looks and everything to do with her hypocrisy, her ugly soulless opinions and her bratty performances. She has morphed into Ann Coulter-lite and hence the dislike by the majority of posters.

  13. Keith Griffin Says:

I usually supports Elisabeth, and feel sorry for her about issues wit Rosie, etc. But on Larry King, she came off as an ass. That hannity jab was so demeaning to and rude, and she came on looking for an argument with Fran. I now see what everyone else sees in Elisabeth

  14. rainlillie Says:

It was nice to hear Fran and Nancy articulate what many of us have been saying. Next time Joy is on, I hope she talks more about politics, without mentioning the View. Joy is a very talented lady. In fact, I think she’s too talented for the View.

  15. Lorraine Says:

I am not jealous of her. She just reminds me of a young kid who doesn’t respect the older women around her, doesn’t think that maybe they have seen a little more of “life” than she has. She has her views, is not open to change, and has gone from a reality show to one of the best gigs in the business (not that I love watching it because I only read this column, but as far as jobs in TV go this is a good gig). She should listen more and talk LESS. Her mother had breast cancer, OK, some life lessons there. But does this woman really speak from any “real life” experience? No divorces, no hard knocks as far as I can tell. Maybe I am wrong but that is how I see it IMHO.

  16. Sharon Says:

    Ann Coulter-lite…..I love it!

  17. Meg Says:

I guess I’m not much of a View geek, but my mom is. I think people need to get out of their shallow world and see what is important here. I’d like to comment on the topic at the end of the show.. the N word. I can understand the frustration that Elizabeth was showing. However, sometimes she does tend to rattle like a machine gun when she gets going. Here’s my point. Nancy..the comedian on the show last night, made a under the breath comment about that whites should be ashamed of how blacks have been treated. I think as with anything it is not always black and white..ha.. ha! She went on to comment about the history and where the N word came from. I can with all confidence say that I do not have to feel ashamed of the history from my ancestors, as my great great grandfather and his brother both volunteered for the First Minnesota regiment! They left their families, risked life and limb, and even took a slug in the leg for the cause that was with him his whole life. Yes, there are some people whose ancestors have the shame that will stay with their families, which is unfortunate, because they have probably and hopefully learned that what their ancestors did was absolutely WRONG. I currently work for the public school system and treat all children even if there were purple ones the same! Time to put this black, white thing away and just be Americans! Also, the N word is a disrespectful word that said by anyone is just that, a disrespectful word and should be taken out of the English language! We need to become a caring and respectful society, and all must try their hardest for the future of this country!

  18. ShannonP Says:

That “you are just jealous” act is so tired. Elisabeth is called Elisabitch, Hasselcrack etc. on all those gossip blogs that are run by MEN. I don’t see people declaring jealous motives when people talk about Sherri or Whoopi or Barbara and all the things they don’t like about them. It’s only when Elisabeth is talked about. To borrow Elisabeth’s favorite term lately, it’s a distraction. Elisabeth is equally disliked by man, woman, and beast. I’ve heard rumors that dogs run from her in the park and squirrels throw nuts at her from trees.
It’s all character based, she just isn’t a nice person.

  19. rainlillie Says:

Why is it when men dislike each other, no one ever accuses them of being “jealous?” It’s just so hard for me to like someone who isn’t opposed to torture…But that’s just me.

  20. Lynn Says:

EH’s looks have nothing to do with my very negative feelings for her. She has no marketable television talent, isn’t very smart, unfeeling (that’s unfortunate about the war),rude, interrupts, overtalks, doesn’t allow others to speak.

If the View could take the tone of last nights Larry King Live it would be a wonderful show. As long as EH is there that will never happen. She acts like an immature child, and is basically very unattractive from the inside, imo.

There are many beautiful, well spoken and intelligent young women in the public eye who do not garner the negative attention EH does, which is proof to me that people are not jealous of EH. It’s more anger that a babbling idiot like herself is getting any attention at all, and is possibly thought of as having any sort of expertise in the area of politics. She knows how to repeat what she’s told and that’s all. There’s no listening, thinking, reacting and responding as an adult with her at all.

  21. Lopez Says:

“To borrow Elisabeth’s favorite term lately, it’s a distraction.”

She stole that term from Rosie. EH uses it as though so much that I know she understands what Rosie was saying last season. She’ll never admit that Rosie had a point.

  22. rainlillie Says:

How did Fran cut “another woman down?” Does that mean every time the ladies on the View talk negativity about other women they are cutting them down? I wonder if TLB (EH) is teaching her children that it’s okay to torture other human beings? Since she put it out there about teaching your children words.

Fran didn’t say or do anything wrong. Fran was the invited guest on the show, viewers tuned in to see and hear Fran. I like Joy, but I think she must have forgotten she wasn’t on the View when she said “let her finish.”

  23. Stacee Says:

    Rainlillie Says:
“I wonder if TLB (EH) is teaching her children that it’s okay to torture other human beings? Since she put it out there about teaching your children words. ”

Don’t forget she was happy that the team at the ESPY awards did not clap for the winners. Way to show sportsmanship.

Oh and I love you Winnie. :-D

    ShannonP Says:
Elisabeth is called Elisabitch, Hasselcrack etc. on all those gossip blogs that are run by MEN.
Any chance these “MEN” are democrats? I don’t believe many republican men would call her that. EXACTLY the opposite of rosie, I’m sure all the insults came from those who opposed her politics.

I don’t see people declaring jealous motives when people talk about Sherri or Whoopi or Barbara and all the things they don’t like about them.
Yet they don’t point out how expensive of houses they live in, or talk about their mates being unemployed and emasculated because they are living off a woman, or how much they make.

Negative attention from liberal/democrats, again, exactly the opposite of rosie. If you feel otherwise, show some links to rush, hannity, etc. proving your point.

is possibly thought of as having any sort of expertise in the area of politics.
I agree, she’s not a political genius. Lucky for eh she’s on a morning fluff/gossip show like the view and not on a political show. A real political show that wanted to fairly discuss issues wouldn’t have the panel stacked 4 to 1 like it is on the view.

So you didn’t like when someone wanted to play by the rules?

  25. ShannonP Says:

Yes Michael, everything can be boiled down to Republican vs. Democrat.
If someone doesn’t like Elisabeth, they MUST be a Democrat. For someone that is trying to come off as so informed, that is a really weak argument to stand on.

And plenty of people have talked about Whoopi and her financial situation or her bus or BW and her high society lifestyle or friendships. You probably didn’t notice though amid your obsession with all things Elisabeth.

  26. rainlillie Says:

“Don’t forget she was happy that the team at the ESPY awards did not clap for the winners. Way to show sportsmanship.”

WOW! did she really say that?

  27. Beverly Says:

Hi All - Originally, the panel wasn’t created along party lines. Age and cultural diversity were the priorities - women with different views. I enjoyed the interaction between MV, SJ (pre-wedding), JB & LL. IMO, EH was a disruptive force from the very beginning. Her ego always got into the way and, even then, I couldn’t believe that she represented her age group.

Now that we’ve seen how dynamic and effective that forum can be (thanks to Rosie), it’s crushing to have to go back to daytime “fluff”. It can be SO much more!

If they want to create the panel politically, then let’s get some well-informed, compelling women for BOTH party lines. I do think we still need the comedienne factor (gotta laugh or we’ll all be cryin’) …

OMT, I don’t find myself even remotely persuaded by arguments for something that depend on cutting the opposite side down. Why not just emphasize the real core reasons that a position is taken? Again, we all want the same things on a human level.

I saw nothing wrong with Fran’s comment - we woman DO use our womanly wiles and Fran just joked about it. EH jumped on it because she could. It’s like telling someone they’re “in denial” — how do you deny that!?! Of course, EH took the offended posture - otherwise she would have had to laugh at herself. If she had just laughed, I would have had at least momentary respect for her.

  28. Lynn Says:

Michael says: Yet people whose business it is have decided to put eh on tv show and pay her millions. That’s not marketable? Ouch!

That’s my point, exactly. EH couldn’t survive on any other show, and I doubt that ANYONE else would employ her in her present capacity. Bill Geddie has the hots for her and I believe that is the basis of her lasting as she has despite her lack of qualifications. She couldn’t articulate her way out of a paper bag and hasn’t improved one iota during her almost 5 years on the show.

Sorry, Michael but I don’t understand your statement about providing links to Hannity etc to prove my point.

Michael says: A real political show that wanted to fairly discuss issues wouldn’t have the panel stacked 4 to 1 one like it is on this show.

Elisabeth would be totally blown away by having another conservative who was actually able to articulate, and converse by thoughtfully responding to others’ opposing viewpoints and not getting hurt feelings and emotional. I would love to see equally represented sides as on Larry King last evening where everyone can discuss things as adults in a mature manner. EH is incapable of that.

  29. christina Says:

Maybe if people would stop atacking eh for everything she does she would not be so defensive. Everyone can get defensive when they need to be and she is certainly justified.

  30. Beverly Says:

Christina, EH throws a lot of rocks herself … but, I admit, she sure seems to have a lot of supportive fans just like you.

  31. Michael Says:

    ShannonP Says:
Yes Michael, everything can be boiled down to Republican vs. Democrat.
If someone doesn’t like Elisabeth, they MUST be a Democrat. For someone that is trying to come off as so informed, that is a really weak argument to stand on.

If I’m not as informed as you say, why didn’t you include any links to prove your point.

I googled it before I wrote my opinion and couldn’t find any evidence that proves your point correct.

Feel free to google it yourself and educate me.

  32. ShannonP Says:

I think Donald Trump is a Republican…and he called Elisabeth one of the dumbest people on TV and an imbecile. He’s also a rich male. Think it was about jealousy there too?
I don’t feel I have to include links to back up an opinion of mine. This isn’t a debate. This is an expression of opinions.
My opinion is, I find you incredibly obnoxious. It isn’t a surpise to me that you are a fan of Elisabeth, you seem to share the same communication style.
I am all for people on here discussing their views, but to just come on this site and try to rile people up and constantly look for an argument…I don’t think it belongs here.

  33. christina Says:

What rocks would those be asking a question from a book. No one deserves to be treated or talked about the way everyone is talking about EH. I suggest a look at yourselves and find out what is at root of all this negetivity.

  34. Jon Says:

GOod for EH to call in and stick up for herself. I don’t htink EH was rude at all to Fran. Whats wrong with sticking up for yourself. If anyone did anything that was rude, it was Fran.. She was completely rude and obnixious! GO EH!!!

  35. Beverly Says:

    #33 ???????????

  36. Michael Says:

    ShannonP Says:
I don’t feel I have to include links to back up an opinion of mine. This isn’t a debate. This is an expression of opinions.

No you don’t have to provide links.

Do you feel when people like orielly or hannity or rush give their opinions they should be based on facts?

My opinion is, I find you incredibly obnoxious.

Of course you do. I wouldn’t expect anything less. I’m saying things you don’t want to hear. I’m sure you feel this blog would be a much better place if the if only the discussion was about how much people hate eh or republicans.

come on this site and try to rile people up and constantly look for an argument…I don’t think it belongs here.
Thanks for giving me that much credit. No one can be forced to be riled up, anyone that got riled up had a choice to be riled up or not. It’s called choice.

What’s the difference between an argument and a discussion? I’m not mad at you. I don’t have hate for you. I’m NOT SCREAMING at you. I am very passionate about what I believe in, I stand up for what I believe in. I write what I feel. When the facts change, I change my opinion.

Like they say, speaking truth to power is not popular nor easy.

  37. christina Says:

No one riled anyone up. We have a different opinion then you before us it was only people that agreed with you. Does someone disagreeing with you mean you have get riled up I don’t think so. You seemed pretty riled up before we were on here.

  38. Michael Says:

    Lynn Says:
Elisabeth would be totally blown away by having another conservative who was actually able to articulate, and converse by thoughtfully responding to others’ opposing viewpoints and not getting hurt feelings and emotional.
Totally blown away is an understatement. Now the question is why did the view put someone on to represent the right that is so unqualified.

Would your words also apply here on this blog? Should the regulars here “converse by thoughtfully responding to others’ opposing viewpoints and not getting hurt feelings and emotional.” Seems like many people here share the same problem eh has.

  39. Lynn Says:

Michael says: Would your words also apply here on this blog?

My words were aimed at a tv show with a focus on viewers interested in hearing the views of several people. As a viewer I expect to hear mature adults discussing things in a friendly spirit where all are allowed to speak and be heard.

To answer the question of why she is on the View as the only conservative, I feel Bill Geddie likes that she can play the victim and attract viewers who are looking for sensationalism.

When I stated that EH would be blown away, I meant that she would be out of her league with a qualified person sharing her point of view. She would not be able to use her techniques of ignore, distract, speak over, etc if there were other conservative panelists who knew how to respond in a thoughtful and articulate manner, supporting their point of view.

Ideally, yes, bloggers should thoughtfully respond to opposing viewpoints without getting emotional. I have much stronger feelings about EH not being able to do the same, though, since she’s paid a major salary without bringing much to the table other than being known as a Survivor contestant, and imo there’s been no sign of visible improvement over the last 4 and 1/2 years.

  40. AN Says:

I am not in any way a fan of Elisabeth’s ideology - but I don’t understand why so many people are calling her “immature.” I’ve seen other celebrity women (i.e. Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston) cry in interviews or get emotional about issues they feel strongly about. I have yet to hear that any of them is “immature.” Since when does being a passionate, emotional woman make you “childish”?

  41. Sky Says:

I don’t like EH or Sherry. Both annoying me.

EH can be articulate but she doesn’t know when to shut up. I don’t enjoy watching her, listening to her and think she often loses her argument when she lets her emotions carry her away. She dresses like a slut but judges other people with a holier than thou attitude that makes me want to puke.

As for Sherry, I think her addition to The View was a mistake. When she is at a loss for her words, her loss is our gain!

  42. Aileeny Says:

“I’ve heard rumors that dogs run from her in the park and squirrels throw nuts at her from trees.”
    ShannonP you slay me!!!

  43. Lopez Says:

“Since when does being a passionate, emotional woman make you “childish”?”

Easy. She was in a heated discussion and cried.

The analogy you provided regarding actresses crying in interviews is not the same as EH getting upset during a conversation where voices were raised.

    The distinction is clear.

  44. ShannonP Says:

I didn’t have a problem with the fact she cried. I can get emotional at times when I feel really passionate or intense about something.
I just didn’t know how sincere it was or if it was really about the topic being discussed. I’m not a regular watcher of the show, so I don’t know if race is a passionate topic for her. I could see it becoming one for her after finding about Barbara’s recent disclosures. Anything to shine Barbara’s apple. Or maybe she just is really passionate about it. I too have that can’t we all just live in love idealistic type attitude sometimes.
What I thought was lame was her comments to Fran about cutting another woman down. We have seen COUNTLESS times where she cut another woman down, including Hillary Clinton and her tears. Rosie, not only on the show with the defend your own insuations episode, but when she was on Hannity’s show. How catty was she there? Elisabeth is not the type of woman that stands up for another woman, unless it serves her purpose. She’s demonstrated that time and again. So she looks like a fool when she comes out trying to act like she is. People do actually have a memory and can remember what she has done to other women.

  45. Stacee Says:

    Well said, ShannonP. I agree.
