March 5th Recap: Rachael Ray and Bob Woodruff

by Winnie McCarthy

rachaelraywax.jpgElisabeth Hasselbeck said that she does not know what to do when her daughter Grace says embarrassing things. They were at an ice cream parlor over the weekend and they were playing I-spy. Elisabeth said “I spy someone with an ice cream cone,” to which Grace replied “the man with the wrinkles?”

Rosie said that she was in an ice cream store several years ago and a woman said “I didn’t know you were pregnant!” Rosie replied, “with twins!” and then told the woman she was going to name them “Ben and Jerry.”

The women talked about the recent controversy at Walter Reed Hospital. There are more wounded soldiers in this war than ever before because the advances in medical care means that more injured soldiers are living. The government is not giving the facilities enough money or caregivers that they need for full rehabilitation. Joy Behar says that it “shows that this Administration does not support the troops.”

They also talked about how Rudy Guiliani’s son, Andrew, told the press that he has had trouble with his father since he divorced his mother, but does not believe that means that he could not be a good president. Should a presidential candidate’s relationship with their children be taken into account when determining whether they will be good president?

Barbara Walters said that she does not think it should matter if the person has a good relationship with their children. Elisabeth said it is certainly something that people will look at. Joy Behar said that raising children should be the most important thing in a person’s life and it says something to her when someone is neglectful of their children. She then went off on a tangent to say that Thomas Jefferson “was probably raping his slave and we still think of him as the greatest president.”

Rosie said that it is difficult to balance work with caring for your children. When her son Parker was four (and she was still doing The Rosie O’Donnell Show), and she had to go to a charity event, he asked her where she was going. She explained to him that she had to go to a fund raiser to raise money for children who did not have any medicine. Parker, in his innocence, said “why don’t you just take care of us?” She said that really made her re-think whether she was spending enough time with her children and led, in part, to her leaving her very popular talk show.

Rachael Ray appeared on the show to talk about her various projects. She said that she typically tapes three hours of her talk show a day, so that she can bank episodes, because she still has her shows on the Food Network to do. She said that because she has been married for a year and a half and is 38, people always ask her when she is having children. She joked that it would have to be an immaculate conception, because she never sees her husband. In addition, she said that she does not think it would be responsible for her to be a parent, because she does not have the time to devote to children. She says that she feels like a lousy parent to her dogs, so she could not imagine the guilt she would feel if she was neglecting her children.

Rachael revealed that she will be starting a charity to feed hungry American children and also teach them how to eat properly. She said that wants to have children in her life, just not to be a mom herself. She said that she remembers how difficult it was for her own mom, who worked in restaurants when she was growing up. Her mom took her to work with her everyday.

Rachael said that she does not really watch what she eats and Joy said that was good because she doesn’t “trust a skinny chef.” Rosie said that is what is wrong with America, because Rachael is a size six, and yet Joy is saying that she is not skinny.

Bob Woodruff and his wife Lee appeared on the show to talk about his recovery from his injury in Iraq, as well as promote their new book, In an Instant: A Family’s Journey of Love and Healing. Bob was injured while reporting for ABC News, after an IED exploded near his convoy. His wife, Lee, was told by the doctors not to hope for a full recovery. She was told that he wouldn’t be able to speak because a rock went through his throat. She was also warned that he would have a change in personality, short-term memory loss, and an inability to remember things. Lee joked that sounded like the Bob she knew. After being in a coma for 36 days, Bob woke up. The first thing he said to his wife was “sweetie where have you been?”

Bob said that he has had a long rehabilitation and has lost some words and names, but speaking with people and getting back to work has helped him to get better. Bob thinks that his role now is to speak for the injured soldiers and said that the government is not acting fast enough to help the soldiers. He said that part of the reason we don’t hear about the injured soldiers on the news is that it is politically damaging to those in power. Bob and Lee have set up a foundation to help wounded soldiers, called the Bob Woodruff Family Fund.

I don’t believe that Rachael Ray is a size 6. She is at least an 8, maybe a 10.

I am a traumatic brain injury survivor. Throughout my lifetime, I have taught myself how to overcome many insurmountable odds. These strategies have helped me to prosper and succeed. Last month, I decided to start a blog at http://www.secondchancetolive.wordpress.com. I would encourage you to visit my site.

The focus of my blog is to encourage, motivate and empower individuals who may have lost hope due to circumstances or events that are out of their control. As a traumatic brain injury survivor, I share from my experience, strength and hope. As a professional, I speak from a wide range of experience. Second Chance to Live will present topics, concepts and practical solutions for living life on life’s terms. Your circumstances are not meant to hold you down, but to build you up. You can read more about my process in My Journey thus Far on my site.

Per my traumatic brain injury, at the age of 10, I was in a motor vehicle accident. Upon impact — the Cadillac hitting our VW Beetle — I was thrown forward from where I sat, behind my father who was driving. On my way forward, I snapped my left femur on my Dad’s bucket seat and then hit the windshield. When my head hit the windshield, I sustained an open skull fracture. The injury to my brain resulted in my remaining in a coma for 3 weeks. Upon waking from what I thought was a bad dream, I found my left leg elevated and in traction. Slowly, it became apparent that I was not merely in a bad dream. Although I am unable to remember much from that time in my life, one memory stands out. The right side of my forehead — where the fracture occurred — was depressed inward like a shallow bowl. I later learned that my right frontal lobe had been damaged, that I had sustained a severe brain contusion, and that my brain stem had been impacted.

In 1967 neurological rehabilitation was not available. As a result, I was virtually on my own. I had to re-teach myself how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences. Although my injuries were life threatening and I was not expected to succeed beyond high school, I went on to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have learned that daunting pessimism and negativity is pointless. My hope is that through visiting my site, those individuals who may have lost hope will see a new light. This light will in turn guide them to a renewed hope, an array of possibilities, and a new zest for living.

Please consider sharing my site with individuals and families who have been impacted by a traumatic brain injury.

    http://www.secondchancetolive.wordpress.com .

    Respectfully yours,

    CJ Noble MRC, BA
