May 15th Recap: William Shatner and David Boreanaz
Rosie O’Donnell said that she learned that the jail that Paris Hilton will be sent to is much scarier than the one that Martha Stewart was in. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that Paris will probably get “ripped” in prison because they have a great work-out program.
Rosie expressed concern that Blake might be voted of American Idol this week. She encouraged all the viewers to vote for him because he is her and Elisabeth’s favorite.
Barbara Walters talked about whether egg donation is ethical. Many young women give their eggs to get money, despite the potential risks of the procedure. A woman who donates her eggs has to get an injection to stop her menstrual cycle, daily hormone injections, and then has a needle inserted in her vagina in order to retrieve the eggs. The long-term effects of this procedure are unknown. Elisabeth suggested that women may have an attachment to their eggs and down the road think that is their baby. Barbara called that idea “far-fetched.”
Joy mentioned that Laura Bush has quit smoking. Rosie expressed shock that Laura Bush was a smoker. Joy joked “Wouldn’t you smoke if you were married to him?” Rosie said that if they are keeping that from us, what else are they keeping from us?
Joy said that Laura Bush has also spoken out in favor of the HPV vaccine. Joy said to Rosie, “You don’t (support it). I remember this conversation.” Rosie said, “I feel like I am on Fox, you telling me what I believe and what I don’t.” Rosie then repeated her position that she was against mandatory inoculations, not against girls preventing STDs. Rosie added that people should be wary of the first round of any vaccine, because you don’t know what the side effects will be. Barbara said that there has been a five year study on the vaccine. Rosie said that when the pharmaceutical companies have such a large financial interest in the product, there should be concern. She suggested that the vaccine should be given free. Elisabeth pointed out that the time when girls get this vaccine, at 12 or 13, their bodies are already going through a great amount of changes.
Rosie also stated that many people think that vaccines may be a cause of autism. Rosie said that from 1991-1995 there was a high amount of mercury in vaccines and although that has changed, the vaccines have not been recalled. Joy asked if that is the case, then why didn’t ever child who received vaccines in those years end up with autism. Elisabeth suggested that perhaps it was because they were no genetically predisposed to autism.
William Shatner, of Boston Legal, appeared on the show. He joked that men giving a sperm sample have to go through so much more than a woman getting her eggs extracted. “We have to go into a room and look at porno pictures. It’s terrible stuff. It’s very, very difficult.”
His character on the show is very conservative and he tries to make it real so it is believable. He said that during the “cigar-smoking, male bonding” scenes on the show he goes through about 20 cigars, which makes shooting it difficult. He said that despite the tabloid reports, he is not a flirt, just very charming. He is participating in “The Gillette Young Gun Celebrity Race.”
David Boreanaz, star of Bones, also appeared on the show. There is a wedding in the season finale and someone will be left at the altar. Tomorrow is David’s birthday and plans to go to a steak place for dinner because his five-year-old son loves steak. His son is a big adventurer and thrill-seeker, just like his father. David’s father is a weatherman for a Philadelphia television station. He said that he took a three week road trip with his father when he was younger and it really helped them develop a close bond.
David said in the upcoming season there is going to be a focus on therapy because he and Emily’s character have to attend therapy to learn how to work together. David said that they would love to have Rosie guest on the show and she said “I’m available!”
