May 17th Recap: Chandra Wilson and Josh Holloway
Chandra Wilson of Grey’s Anatomy was today’s guest host. During the first season she was still breastfeeding her youngest son Michael, so the fit of her scrubs would change throughout the shooting. She also has two other children, ages 13 and 8.
She has been asked to host “Live from the Red Carpet at the Daytime Emmy’s” for SoapNet. She watches four hours of soaps everyday. She doesn’t like it when actors leave one of her soaps.
Paris Hilton’s sentence has been reduced to 23 days, which will be spent in solitary confinement. Joy Behar suggested that she use that time to read classic literature like Moby Dick, Great Expectations, and Oliver Twist. She said that will give Paris an idea of what children had to go through in history who were not as fortunate as her.
Joy Behar talked about the Republican debate and she thought that Ron Paul was “right on the money” about rethinking our policy in the Middle East. She agreed with his thoughts that is was wrong for us to be building permanent bases in Iraq, because what would we think if China or another country did that to us. Elisabeth said that Paul believes that it is because of United States policy that 9/11 happened.
Chandra said you have to figure out the logic behind people who grow up with a mentality that they are going to give their life to go against America. Elisabeth said that there is not any logic behind thinking that way. After she used the word “terrorist” repeatedly, Rosie asked if her use of the word “terrorist” means she thinks that they are innately evil and grow up wanting to kill us for no reason? She said that Muslim extremists who blow up their own children are terrorists and she will continue to use that word. She asked Rosie if she wanted to call them, “sweet peas.”
Rosie said that if you lived in Iraq and America came in and killed over 600,000 of your fellow citizens, who would you think were the terrorists? Rosie said that she believes that there is government-sponsored terrorism by every country in the world, including ours.
They talked about how radio DJs Opie and Anthony had a man on their show who talked about raping Condoleezza Rice, Queen Elizabeth and Laura Bush. They were suspended off of XM Radio, but not from CBS radio. Don Imus, of course, was fired from CBS radio after making a racist remark. Rosie said that the women’s movement and feminism have lost all their power in this country and that is why people are allowed to promote sexist, violent statements and not get fired. Elisabeth thinks we have lost our moral discretion in society.
Oddest moment of hot topics: Elisabeth Hasselbeck spent an increasingly long amount of time attempting remove something from the nose of Joy Behar.
Josh Holloway, who stars as Sawyer on Lost, appeared on the show. Prior to landing the part, he was contemplating quitting the acting business for the third time. He said that the producers of the show had originally planned for the character to be a slick, Prada-wearing conman. He decided to just show up at the audition like himself, sort of scruffy, and he managed to convince the producers to change the character. Chandra asked him about the season finale, saying that The Others are coming and someone is leaving and he said “There is some of that” and added, “Gosh I would love to tell you.”
Rosie said that she thought that Lost was a parable for purgatory. Josh said that he thought that as well, but the writers have told him so many times that it is not. He said that he will be upset if it ends up being true.
He lives with his wife on Oahu and they were robbed at gunpoint in their home. He said that his house was under construction so it was open and a man came in with a gun. He added that he was naked at the time “because that is how we sleep.” He covered his wife and talked to the man, who was “tripped out” and didn’t expect anyone to be in the house. The man was arrested after burglarizing 22 homes in two weeks.
At the end of the segment, after Josh revealed that he loved Barbara Streisand growing up, Rosie cuddled up next to him, held his hand, and professed her love for him. Could Josh Holloway be Rosie’s new Tom Cruise?
Dancing with the Stars cast-offs Cheryl Burke and Ian Ziering appeared on the show and performed a dance number. Initially Ian was not interested in doing a reality show because there is a stigma attached to reality show and it wasn’t an acting gig. He trained over 30 hours a week. He said that Elvis wig was his idea. He said he doesn’t have a favorite for who he wants to win in the finale. He is single and hopes that his next girlfriend is a dancer. Cheryl said that she currently has a boyfriend who is not a dancer and said that it is good to date someone who is not a dancer.
