May 18th Recap: Teri Hatcher and Healthy Snacks for Kids

by Winnie McCarthy

teri.jpgElisabeth Hasselbeck said that her brother is graduating from law school this weekend. Rosie O’Donnell accidentally revealed a family secret by telling the audience that Elisabeth’s brother got a tattoo with the name of Elisabeth’s daughter Grace.

Barbara Walters brought up that her friend wrote a book about male nannies. Rosie said that she wouldn’t want a male nanny for her children because of her concern about pedophilia. She said the majority of pedophiles are male. Elisabeth said that she would not want a male nanny either. Barbara said that if she checked the references that she probably would have done it.

Barbara said that she is worried about her dog Cha-Cha being dog-napped because people recognize her even when Barbara is not with her. The other hosts all got a good laugh about Barbara’s obsession with her dog. Rosie said for a joke it would be fun to dog-nap Cha-Cha. Barbara looked very hurt by even the mere suggestion of such a thing.

Teri Hatcher, of Desperate Housewives, appeared on the show. On Mother’s Day she went with her daughter Emerson and her own mom to the racetrack, for their version of the Kentucky Derby. They got all dressed up and had candy and champagne. Teri made the trip like a math lesson, giving her nine-year-old daughter a certain amount of dollars to spend during the day.

Teri is “having a good time with a nice man,” who is not an actor. In response to Barbara’s favorite question for single female guests, “Is he good to you?” Teri said “He is good. Okay, next question.” She said that she has really made being a mother a priority in her life. In regards to having more children, Teri said that she has thought about it for years and doesn’t “feel done.”

She said that for an article for Glamour UK, she gave her daughter a camera to take photos of the paparzzi when they were following and/or surrounding the two of them. Teri said that it was very empowering for her daughter and since the article was published, the paparazzi have backed off. She is not sure if it because of the article or because she is “not hot anymore.”

She said that she learned of all the great qualities of wine, including exfoliating, so when she has an opened bottle of wine that no longer tastes good, she pours it in the bath. She joked that it is not really a beauty secret, but more of “an excuse to be an alcoholic.”

She revealed that her character will marry Mike on the season finale. She said that it really lives up to the moment that people have been waiting for. For more on the season finale, check out Watching Desperate Housewives.

Heidi Lane, Rosie’s sister-in-law, appeared on the show to tell the audience about healthy snacks you can make for your children that they will enjoy. She is a trained chef and used to be a chef for Ross Perot.

  • Fruit Popicles: Pureed bluberries, pears, and strawberries, along with a little bit of maple syrup. Freeze each fruit one at a time in popsicle molds, available from Crate & Barrel. When putting in the second layer (after first layer is frozen), insert a popsicle stick. When that is frozen, do the third layer.
  • Yogurt Pop: Take a yogurt container, make a small slit in the top. Insert a popsicle stick and place in the freezer. When it is frozen, remove the package and you have a yogurt pop.
  • Meatball cupcakes: Use bulgar and ground flaxseed, put into ground hamburger meat. Place it in a cupcake pan to cook it. To make the icing, use steamed cauliflower, strain out the water, puree it completely in a food processor. Place it in a ziploc bag and squeeze it out like icing onto the meat. Then for the “sprinkles” use cut-up vegetables or cheese.
  • Animal Shapes (Broccoli balls): Take broccoli, brown rice, and cheese, get it really hot and then put it in the food processor. It makes a paste, which you should cover with bread crumbs to make molding it easier. Then use your hands to easily shape the mixture to look like different animals. Then bake it. After baking, you can add details like ears, tails, etc. with almonds, walnuts, or other foods.
