May 21st Recap: Doug Savant and a spelling bee
Joy Behar talked about her daughter’s bridal shower over the weekend at a local Italian restaurant. Elisabeth Hasselbeck went to her brother’s law school graduation and spent the whole ceremony sending him text messages. Barbara Walters MC’d an event that honored Oprah Winfrey.
Rosie O’Donnell’s wife Kelli is turning 40, so her whole family is in town and several of them were in the audience, including Melanie, Kelli’s mother. On a previous episode, Barbara Walters called Melanie a bigot, which she felt bad about later. Rosie said that this morning Melanie went into Barbara’s dressing room and said “It’s your favorite bigot!” and then campaigned to take over Rosie’s job.
Rosie will have to miss the Daytime Emmy Awards because of Parker’s graduation from his grade. She said that if they win the Daytime Emmy for best hosts (which they have never won), all the credit goes to Barbara for hiring her. Then the conversation got a bit contentious:
Joy: So what are you saying, we couldn’t have won before you came?
Rosie: Why do you have to turn it into a negative? Joy, you want me to say it is the same EXACT show it has was for nine years? It used to get just as much attention?
Joy: We’re the same people.
Rosie: If you win best host, if we win best host, it’s her (Barbara) for hiring me.
Barbara: Our first big fight!….If we do win, it was a different show this year. Rosie was on with us and if we win, it is because of ALL of us, but it was a different year.
Jimmy Carter spoke out against the current administration and their handling of the war in Iraq. He came down on the fact that now the United States is known as a nation who attacks other countries pre-emptively, even when our security is not in danger, simply because we want to change the regime there. The White House said that Carter has become “increasingly irrelevant.”
For Rosie’s response today to Fox News claim that she think the troops are terrorists, check out my post from earlier today. The discussion got pretty contentious, which made the transition into the guest segment rather awkward when a discussion of the previous night’s Desperate Housewives finale suddenly felt unimportant.
Doug Savant of Desperate Housewives appeared on the show. If you haven’t seen last night’s season finale, I suggest you stop reading now. In the season finale, Nicolette Sheridan’s character appears to have hung herself. Doug said that he could not confirm or deny whether he knew if she lives or dies. He said that he doesn’t think we have seen the last of Rick, the man who his character’s wife had an emotional affair with. He said that the issue will continue to resonate in their marriage.
He partnered with Playtex to create a sippy-cup with his daughter which will go on auction, with the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS foundation.
Joy Behar competed in a spelling bee against two kids, 10-year-old Kavya and 14-year-old Jonathan. The competed in the National Bee last year coming in 10th and 6th place respectively. Rosie couldn’t pronounce some of the words and needed Kavya to pronounce them for her. Joy got all of the questions right, until she got to “borborygmus.”

The View is such a shill for ABC shows without Rosie’s opinions to add some substance to the “Hot Topics” segments. Joy does have intelligent things to say, but her delivery just doesn’t have Rosie’s impact. Once in a blue moon, Barbara says something that’s actually relevant, while even on a good day, Elisabeth sounds like an empty vessel. That’s why if the hosts can get an Emmy, it would be this year with Rosie on board. Next season, it’ll probably be back to a fluffy talk show with celebs.

I have to admit that Rosie sure brought a lot of contraversy to the View, and some new viewers. I’ve heard many state that they tuned in just to laugh at whatever crazy thing she spouted next.
Whatever the reason her being a host did bring the show up in ratings.
Still it wouldn’t be what it is without them ALL. Elisabeth has a great deal to do with what brings viewers. Without her, Rosie had no one to debate. In my opinion most of the last 6 months has been set up.
I don’t think they’ll win, but if so, it’s due to them ALL.

I watched the referenced program and BARBARA was the one who first gave all of the credit for the possible Emmy win to Rosie. It went from there with Rosie awkwardly attempting to shift any credit due back to Barbara for “hiring” Rosie. The whole show had a weird energy from beginning to end. I think Joy is more seriously perturbed with Barbara than is reported and I also suspect that Barbara’s previous (uncalled for) “bigot” comment is where this episode’s weird energy started. I’m a long time View viewer (but a NEW Rosie fan) and I am so disappointed that FINALLY we have a daytime show of real substance only to have it slip away. I can’t imagine go backward and being satisfied with the fluff of View seasons past. This country has REAL issues to worry about and season 10 brought them to the forefront. Yes, thanks to Rosie, The View became substantial and relevant! As for Elisabeth’s contribution? Oh Please.
