May 24th Recap: The day after

by Winnie McCarthy

Rosie O’Donnell was absent from the show for what was labeled a “day off” because it was Kelli’s birthday. Barbara Walters sat in the moderator chair and said “Aunt Barbara is back” and all will be well again. She said that some people are saying that the fight on Wednesday was for ratings. Joy joked, “We’re not that smart.” Barbara pointed out that they got their highest ratings in February, when there were no feuds. Guest host Kathy Griffin joked that she would “love it if Barbara would punch me in the face and I’d be on all the shows tomorrow.”

Barbara also said that what was so great about The View is that women have been able to have debates, without letting emotion getting into it. She also said that if they had issues in the past that they used to do it off-stage, but in this case it happened on camera. She then added that it was still a “normal” day, if there is such a thing for The View.

Elisabeth said that the argument between her and Rosie would not have gotten so much publicity if it had been between two men. Joy said that kind of fighting is not good for the show, because that is what drove Crossfire off their air. Kathy said that she wanted to talk more about the fight and Barbara took a tone with her and asked her “do you want to be on the show again?”

There was also a discussion of Kathy Griffin being able to get a seat at the American Idol finale, which she said was a very complicated process. She also reminded viewers that the new season of her show “My Life on the D-List” premieres June 5th on Bravo.

There was some more discussion about the American Idol finale. The only interesting part of the discussion was when Elisabeth said she fast forwarded through Sanjaya on the finale. Kathy joked that it was just like her and her Republican administration. Then Barbara made a strange comment (joke?) that Republicans don’t watch American Idol. I can never tell when Barbara is trying to be funny.

There was an uninteresting segment about various celebrities who charge money for their appearances at parties, including Lindsay Lohan and Carmen Electra.

Joy Behar talked about how she went to see the play about Richard Nixon and David Frost. Frank Langella called Barbara to ask her how Nixon walked, since Barbara had interviewed him in the past. Barbara told him that he walked like he was constipated. Joy added that he looked like an orangutan who was constipated.

Barbara said that she went to a dinner party the night before and had her cell phone in her lap in case someone needed to call her about what happened on the show. Without knowing it, she had called her daughter and her daughter was able to hear everything that she said at the dinner party.

Elisabeth talked about how she went to a “blond” luncheon and the topic at her table was about menopause. She told Joy that she learned that if you take birth control pills up until the start of menopause, it may lessen your symptoms. Kathy Griffin made a joke that she never took birth control because all the babies are children of Jesus. The audience laughed a bit, but it was received with almost no response from the other panelists. Barbara kind of smiled politely at her and Elisabeth said she was glad she felt that way and continued the discussion about menopause.

Dancing with the Stars
winners Apolo and Julianne appeared on the show. They said that despite their on-stage chemistry, there is no romance between them. Apolo will be in the 2010 Olympics for speed skating. Kathy asked them if they saw the fight between Elisabeth and Rosie yesterday. Joy did not look thrilled the comment and Elisabeth sounded exasperated and continued on with the questioning. Kathy also asked them why they didn’t just hook up. When Apolo said that he wanted to keep it strictly professional, Kathy said that maybe there was a chance for her to get with him then.

In a segment on “Healing Hearburn” we learned:

  • Heartburn is burning sensation in stomach or esophagus after eating or anytime during the day.
  • Being overweight doubles chance of getting heartburn.
  • Food sensitives also cause heartburn: dried fruits, spices, corn, coffee, red wine, gluten, and cheese, among others.
  • Stress also can cause heartburn. Kathy asked if the fight between Rosie and Elisabeth could have caused heartburn. Joy said something about beating a dead horse and they moved on.
  • Tropical fruits, millet cereal, and rice are more gentler on the system.
  • A glass of lemon water in the water in the morning will start the day off right.
  • Get 35 grams of fiber during the day.

  • Estako Beltran and Representative Cardoza were on to discuss the foster care crisis. Beltran was in the foster care system in over 30 different homes as a child and now is trying to improve it for the children that are currently part of the system. There is a perception in society that foster care children are troubled, but more often it was their parents that were troubled. This misperception leads to so many children being in foster care who are waiting to be adopted. Rep. Cardoza said that after children age out of a foster care at age 18, a very high percentage end up homeless. He has a bill that he proposed to continue health care for the children who age-out of the system until the age of 21.

I really don’t think this situation is going to end well. I sense there is a grudge match between the producer and Rosie… Elisabeth was just a tool, and Barbara will most likely stick with the producer.

    2. Sandy Says:

I don’t know about the producer. I just feel REALLY BAD for both Rosie and Elisabeth. I do so hope that Rosie doesn’t quit before her contract is up. Although I understand it is probably painful for her..in more ways thamn 1. Her fans will be so disapponited.
I just don’t feel it will be good to leave n this note,..for anyone.

    3. kc Says:

Ross the Intern from The Tonight Show will be on for the June 5. He’s a big fan of Rosie. It would be sad for him to come out and sit there with four women, none of them Rosie. Gah! Whose stupid idea was it to let that argument get so out-of-hand? So much could be avoided if there was a cooling down period. Everything was handled so badly. It’s like a coup d’etat! God forbid Elisabeth should become the moderator. But then again, who cares, I won’t be watching anyway.

    4. Lorraine Hawkins Says:

I was a big fan of Barbara Walter, I just did not understand how she thought Rosie O would be a good choice for The View, her personality is over the top and she thinks its all about Gayness. Star had a strong personality but she was a very classy lady and she did not abuse or talk bad about anyone. I think Barbara has lost some of her credibility because of Rosie and thats a shame, what takes the cake is they think we are stupid enough to think that Rosie is leaving on her on, I myself think she was fired, anyway I don’t watch the show anymore anyway so, so be it.
