May 2nd Recap: Keri Russell
Barbara Walters announced that Rosie O’Donnell has been named “one of the most influential people who dictate international dialogue” by Time Magazine. The issue will come out Friday and the article about Rosie was written by Barbara. After Barbara read some of the other names on the list, Rosie said she felt like it was the Sesame Street song “one of these things is not like the other.”
Elisabeth Hasselbeck was invited to the State dinner at the White House which will honor Queen Elizabeth II. She said that she was very nervous when she was opening the invitation. The event is white tie and her husband Tim is even more nervous than she is. Both Joy and Rosie said that they would not go if they were invited to the White House.
In what demonstrated their collective failing memories, Rosie and Barbara both repeated stories about their personal encounters with King Constantine. They told the exact same stories previously on the show.
They talked about how President Bush and his wife appeared on American Idol to thank the viewers for their donations to charity the previous week. Rosie said that she would be impressed if Fox was willing to match the millions of dollars that the people of America gave out of their pockets. She also said that all of the billions of dollars spent in Iraq could have been put to other uses. Joy said that Bush was just using this as a photo-op. Elisabeth said she thought it was good that all of the people donated so much money and it was nice that he thanked them.
Keri Russell appeared on the show to promote her new film Waitress. Keri is currently pregnant and said she was due “at any minute.” She does not know the sex of the baby. She said that she is planning to have her baby in the hospital, but she is going to use a midwife. Keri played a pregnant woman in Waitress and also in her next three film roles. She said she must just have the look of a young pregnant woman.
The writer and director of Waitress, Adrienne Shelly, was murdered following the filming of the movie. Keri said that initially The New York Post reported, in a salacious article, that Shelly had committed suicide. Keri said that everyone was very upset because they did not know that she was suicidal. Several days later, the police revealed that she had been murdered. Keri said it was only The Post that reported the untrue suicide theory.
Dr. Ira M Sacker appeared on the show to discuss his book Regaining Your Self, which presents a new approach to treating eating disorders. Rather than looking at eating disorders as an issue of food, control, appearance, or weight, he says you have to look at it as identity. He said that when someone has an eating disorder, it becomes their identity. His method of treatment is to transition that identity into a passion pursuit. He finds what the individual is passionate about and encourages them in that pursuit.
Laura McDonald, a patient of Dr. Sacker, had an eating disorder starting at age nine. She said that she had anorexia all through high school and into college. She was able to hide the disorder until the time she went into treatment. Dr. Sacker encouraged her to use art to develop her positive identity. She said that she often has trouble speaking about things, but through her art she is able to express herself. She now considers herself to be in recovery.
