Rosie O’Donnell on Martha Stewart Show
Rosie O’Donnell continued her publicity campaign for her book Crafty U on The Martha Stewart Show today. They talked about a wide variety of topics from the wonderful grilled cheese Rosie was given to eat backstage, their experiences on Celebrity Jeopardy! (they both won in the past), and, of course, crafts.
They did two crafts from Rosie’s new book. First they decorated sneakers and then they made artwork out of beans. On display were some bean art pictures of donkeys and they talked about how Martha now has three donkeys.
It got a little uncomfortable at one point when Martha obviously wanted Rosie to stop talking about her time “in the clink.” Martha did bring it up referring to “when I was in Alderson,” making it sound like a place she had visited, but I don’t think she wanted an extended chat on her time in prison. Rosie said on her video blog this morning that Martha responds better when people treat her like a regular person, which was clearly what Rosie was trying to do.
Martha mentioned a few things that Rosie should try, like going to Maine to see Beluga whales. Rosie said that she should call her because she isn’t busy and “hasn’t worked since 2002 except for The View, tick a lock, let’s not talk about that.” She echoed her sentiments from this morning on Good Morning America that she does better when she is the boss. She also added that at The View “there was a little Republican who scared me.”
I will post a video if one become available.

I agree with a lot of things Rosie says and then there are some things I don’t agree with, but I always always find her humerous and full of humility. I enjoy people who are intelligent AND can laugh at themselves.

I also thought it was a bit awkward when Rosie was talking about how an ex-art director of Martha’s spearheaded the book and that Rosie wanted the book to look like one of Martha’s. It is my understanding that this was not a MSO book.

@ny Price:
I took it as a compliment Rosie was paying Martha (& the art director), that Rosie wanted her book to look as good as Martha’s. After all, it is Rosie’s first how-to, craft book, and those have to be very clearly laid out and designed so they can be user-friendly. Especially since Rosie’s book is for both the adult and child reader. The cover of Rosie’s book and the bright crayon colors she uses are clearly very different from the look and feel of a Martha Stewart type of book, so I don’t think anyone is trying to sell it as a MSO book. Just my opinion.
Maybe the awkwardness was because the art director was no longer working on Martha’s books? I’ve heard (rumors, I don’t have documentation) that the staff who have worked on Martha’s books and magazines turns over frequently, that it’s a stressful atmosphere & she’s not easy to work for. (I’ve heard the same rumors about Oprah & her magazine and about Rosie during her magazine era). I don’t know how justified the rumors are.
