Sherri Shepherd: “I’ve got to have a sense of humor”

Sherri Shepherd told me in our recent interview, that despite the fact that she has received a lot of criticism for things that she has said during her time on The View, she does not hesitate to get involved in the hot topics.
In the beginning I did, because I was reading all this stuff and nobody was happy with what Sherri was doing. I was either doing this too much or I was doing that too much. Or “Why does she always talk about this?” or “She is an idiot.” If I am trying to please these people . . . than no on is going to be happy. If I am not true to who I am and I don’t remember why they put me on this show, then nobody is going to be happy with me, most off all myself. So I had to let that go and just say, “This is me.” I love to laugh. A lot of it on here is comic relief. You know, I am not Star Jones. I am not a political analyst. A lot of people ask, “Why doesn’t she know a lot about politics?” That is not why Barbara and Bill have me on the show. They have Joy. They have Elisabeth.

I have made mistakes and I just laugh it off because I can’t keep going on the show and saying what I meant to say the day before, but it didn’t come out right.

People who don’t like me or don’t care for me, no matter what I say, they are going to jump on me. People who really like Sherri and know my heart, they really kind of get me and don’t have these expectations. I already know that when I make a little mistake that they are going to write me up and you just, you kind of move on because life is too short. We have responsibility for what comes out of our mouths, but if I’m not harming anybody, I don’t want to offend anybody, but I try to be conscious, but I just can’t keep worrying about it and I’ve got to have a sense of humor.
Sherri added that she learned early on in her stint as co-host (following the world is flat incident) that the other women would be supportive of her no matter what:
I went the next day and I was so upset and they could sense it because I wasn’t joking or contributing anything to the hot topics, Whoopi (Goldberg) said, “What is wrong?” and I said, “Everyone is getting on me and I didn’t mean to say it and I had never defended my faith before.” She brought all the ladies in and I remember Joy (Behar) said “If you ever want to address anything we are right behind you and we are standing with you and everybody makes mistakes. I have done it.” Elisabeth (Hasselbeck) said that she has done it. Then Whoopi did the all for one, one for all, hand thing, where you put your hands on top of each other. That’s when I realized that I am working with the most amazing group of women and they all hugged me.

YEAH Sherri!!!!
Just be you, I really like the person you are. i wouldn’t want you to be something you aren’t, or try to pretend to be.
I have no doubt that the ladies, the other host, are very caring ladies, and support you.
