The View April 21st Recap: Cindy McCain, Craig Ferguson, and Chelsea Handler

by Winnie McCarthy

cindy-mccain-the-view.jpg Today on The View Cindy McCain sat in as guest host. She walked out linking arms with Barbara Walters. Sherri Shepherd was not on the show today, with no explanation, only an assurance that she would be back tomorrow.

Cindy calls her husband “Johnny Boy.” Joy said that she wished she knew that when he was on the show so she could have sung that song to him. Cindy said that John is funny, a great cook, and into horticulture. She said that is why global warming is “one of the mainstays” of his campaign. She says that we have not done enough for the environment in this country.

Barbara asked her if she was wearing a flag pin and she said it was a pin of mothers of military. Her son, a Marine, recently returned from Iraq.

Cindy watched part of the last Democratic debate. She said that debates are very stressful on the family and it is hard to watch the bickering. She hopes, however, that the Democratic race goes on until the convention. Joy said that even the media is bored with the back and forth, adding that the ABC moderators were criticized for their handling of the last debate. Elisabeth said that they did a fantastic job by asking questions that Americans want to know. Barbara asked Cindy which Democratic candidate she thought was more formidable and Cindy said that both candidates are formidable and it makes it great for the voters.

Elisabeth asked Cindy about “recipe-gate,” where recipes claiming to be McCain family dishes were posted on the McCain website. It turned out that they were from the Food Network. She said that it was posted by an intern and doesn’t know how it happened. She said that the intern is now at “Betty Crocker boot camp,” to which Elisabeth responded with a giggle. Cindy wants to write a book about the ups and downs of political life and it will include this issue. She has already started the book and is enjoying writing it.

Cindy was raised in the beer industry and can tell if a beer is fresh. She doesn’t drink beer that much.

Cindy said that the biggest misconception about her husband is the temper issue. He is concerned and passionate about America and the future of the country. She said that some people mistake that for a temper. She has never seen a temper. She said that the biggest misconception about her is that she was not in favor of her husband running or that she does not like politics. She said that is not true and she is enjoying the race. She said that she is from Phoenix, Arizona and is part of American history and that is a great thing.

Danica Patrick became the first woman to win an Indy Car race ever by winning a race in Japan. Whoopi and Elisabeth both gave congratulations. Cindy said that when she used to go to races with her father, women were not even allowed in the pits and she is so proud of Danica.

Elisabeth said that the “binky fairy” came to her house last week and took all of Grace’s pacifiers. Elisabeth even made up a little song for her. Since then, Grace has woken up screaming every night since. Elisabeth said that she has become the binky, always in bed with Grace. Barbara said that she should tell Grace that she is a big girl. Elisabeth said that Grace said she doesn’t want to be three.

Whoopi said that she was a thumb-sucker for a long time. Her daughter stopped using her pacifier when other kids told her it was for babies. Joy said that her daughter was on the bottle too long and one time she left it at her mother’s house. She told her daughter she forgot it and her daughter just said, “okay.” Barbara said that she sucked her thumb so long she got an overbite and had to get braces. Whoopi then admitted that she sometimes still half sucks her thumb if she is nervous at night or something. She said that the child should dictate when they are sick of the binky.

Elisabeth said that is the anniversary of when Barbara moved from NBC to ABC which changed the future for all women in broadcasting. She mentioned this because it was in Barbara’s memoir, which all the ladies have read advanced copies of. Barbara said that they can’t talk about the book because it is in embargo. She said that Oprah will have the first interview for the book. Joy said, “Oprah, huh? Not us? She has bigger ratings.” Whoopi said, “It is Oprah. It’s not the same.”

Barbara asked what the other ladies consider a big decision in their lives. Whoopi said whether she would take the career that was offered to her when she was a single mom. It was the right decision. Joy took The View over doing a sitcom in Los Angeles because she wanted to stay in New York. Cindy said that the time between her husband’s last run for the White House and this one were tough because both her parents died and she had a stroke. The decision whether her husband should run again was a difficult decision, but it was right decision for the family. Elisabeth said that decision to be on The View was a big one for her because the show is very exposing and she has to be very open about things.

A new study said that the oldest Americans are happiest. Joy said that is because they don’t remember the things that made them unhappy at 30. Elisabeth said Taylor is happy, so maybe it is both ends of the spectrum. Cindy said that John’s mom is 96 and she is very happy. John is exactly the same way and neither are “old.” She said that John is hiking rim to rim the Grand Canyon again this year. Barbara said that you have lower expectations as you age and Joy said that being thin is important to longevity.

Craig Ferguson appeared on the show to promote The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. He recently beat Conan O’Brien in the ratings. Craig said that Conan has always been nice to him and there is no personal animosity. He joked that when he tried out for the show, they had everyone in Hollywood auditioning, including Alf. Craig feels like “the fly in the ointment” on The View. The last time he was here it was breastfeeding week and now the binky fairy.

He took his son to his first Broadway musical to see Mary Poppins. He said that his son is not gay because he sighed with a bit of boredom during one of the songs in the show.

Craig is hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner this weekend in Washington, DC. Barbara said that two years ago Stephen Colbert got in trouble for some of his remarks about President Bush (she pronounced his name with a hard T, which I thought was funny). Craig joked that he wasn’t going to try to be controversial or funny so he won’t get in trouble.

He took the citizenship test recently and became a U.S. citizen. He has lived in United States for 13 years. Barbara said that people might not know where he is from, so he joked he is from Peru. He is from Scotland (which you can tell by his accent, so Barbara again is thinking the audience is not bright). He joked that the reason he wanted to live in the United States was because everyone’s teeth were so white.

Craig said being a talk show host is “just talking rubbish” and if he didn’t have the show he would be doing it anyway, so he might as well be getting paid the miserable salary that CBS has given him.

Cindy asked Craig to go easy on her husband at the correspondents dinner. Craig said that the one thing he has against her husband is that there isn’t much to joke about other than he is old. He joked he would appreciate some kind of scandal so there would be better material.

Chelsea Handler of E! show Chelsea Lately appeared on the show to promote her new book Are you there Vodka, It’s Me, Chelsea? She said that she was a “big mess” growing up. Her mother was Mormon and her father was Jewish and they asked her which she wanted to be. She said that she looked at the no dancing, no drinking life offered by Mormonism and opted to be raised Jewish.

She joked she never had a binky and would like one. The book is about her childhood and how she “got so screwed up.” She said that vodka is her best friend. Barbara said, in a serious tone, “Do you really drink heavily?” Chelsea joked that she is drunk right now. She said that she drinks often, but not a lot in quantity. She will also be at the correspondents dinner and plans to get drunk there.

She said that she adopted two children in other countries, but they don’t live with her. Elisabeth asked her about what she said about redheaded men in her book. Chelsea said that dating a redheaded man is not a good thing, because when you wake up and look over at him, it looks like he has a clown in a leg lock. She added that redheaded men do not have good role models, Carrot Top being the only one she can think of. Whoopi asked Elisabeth why she asked her that question, knowing what the answer would be.

Chelsea tries to stay away from politics because she doesn’t know much about it. She is dating Tim Harbert, who is the head of Comcast Entertainment Group which oversees E!. He is twenty years older than her. He tells her sometimes that she goes too far in her comedy. As long as she doesn’t talk about him, he is okay with it. She said that he is amazing in bed. Chelsea asked Cindy McCain about her marriage to John and whether she is committed to it because they also have a big age difference (18 years). Although Chelsea was obviously teasing her, Cindy seemed a bit like she thought Chelsea was seriously questioning the seriousness of her marriage.

Chelsea was arrested for DUI and spent one night in a women’s prison. She encouraged people not to drink and drive.

At the end of the show, Barbara thanked “out new best friend” Cindy McCain.

  1. lilkunta Says:

lol I just posted on the “The View Schedule: April 16-20th” post if this post was coming & here it is.
1st: Y was SS gone? They think she wouldnt have been good w Cindy?

2nd: WTH was EH wearing? She studied design, hosted the look 4 less, proudly touts that she designed her wedding cape, says he is coming out a kids clothing line….but thought it was ok 2 wear that HORRIBLY UGLY blaser?..Where the h*ll r TV stylists? I know 1 had a baby but surely her maternity leave is done by now. & even if she is gone, i dont think that TV has just 1 stylist 4 al 5 ladies. That collar pattern2 her blzaer was atrocious.

3rd: I do have sympathy (I know Im shocked as u r) 4 EH as she seems 2 have been up every hr all night w Grace & Taylor.
Tim aint working so y aint he helping?
..but again, tired or not there was no hair stylist who could give her a straigt pull back? Her hair was dishevelled.

  2. lilkunta Says:

@ 7min in, the convo was on Cindy but yet again BW managed 2 turn it on herself.

Y wont geddie or her ppl\rep\manager tell her 2 stop?

  3. Lisa Says:

I didn’t understand the explanation about the “stolen” recipe. It’s remarkable that Cindy and John were married for 28 years and she hasn’t seen his temper. :D
Does anyone else find that rather strange?

  4. lilkunta Says:

1)Was SS missing bc BW is still mad @ her comments when BO was there ( BO stated he’d revert the tax cuts 4 the rich that Bush enacted. SS replied “bad news 4 u BW bc u rich” & reprimanded her by saying
“no no no we DONT do that”
“no no no we DONT do that”

2)”CMac” still looked very prim\proper\ uptight 2 me. …They softballed her.
a)They made no mention of her illegal prescription drug ordeal & how her husb made it so she got no charges.
b)They also could have talked about her international work. From 1 of those trips she brought sick kids 2 US for surgery & ended up adopting 1, I think a Cambodian daughter.

    3) She has dies her eyebrows 2 match her hair so that was nice. I really wish EH would do the same. Her breasts dont look full anymore so has she stopped breastfeeding? If so please go back 2 your natural brown colour & dye your brows 2 match.

  5. lilkunta Says:

    @ #3Lisa,
She was lying. She definitely has but she wants 2 maintain that their marriage is perfect.

    Rd this Lisa : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/07/report-mccains-profane-ti_n_95429.html

So Cindy wants us 2 believe he never has war flashbacks? Never gets mad bc of stress from the job?
Heck even something as simple as getting mad over hitting your toe on the table? Pls. She is lying!

  6. lilkunta Says:

    Chelsea Handler:
Y did she kiss all but just shake WhG?
Also she shook Cindy but of course that is understandable.

I wonder if EH & BW r aware that CH rips them apart….
    …much like Kath Griffin did\does.

    CH is so funny!

But I do hate how they rushed her. Joy even rudely said “ok stop talking we gotta go ” . If TV didnt have those ridiculouly long commercials they could inverview more.
Also, the show always ends @ :58, did u all notice that?

  7. Lisa Says:

    Thanks lilkunta :D

  8. Carol Says:

Barbie is starting a line of clothing for kids? More of her?

How does she have so much time for all of these activities with 2 kids at home, that she claims take so much time?

  9. Lopez Says:

“3) She has dies her eyebrows 2 match her hair so that was nice.”

    Ha! Too funny.

  10. marilyn Says:

I thought EH looked nice in her clothing attire.

About CH not kissing WG. I think she was running out of time. Personally, I wish they would make a no kissing rule. It is time consuming and takes away the already short interviews. I remember BW mentioning it, one day, when the guest was still trying to get all the kissing done and BW expressed the need to get the interview started. Most talk shows have only one host and not a “group” of hosts.

  11. marilyn Says:

    # 4

Didn’t SS also not show up for John McCain. ? I am not sure. There was one more, “no show” from SS after the OB bludder. I agree, that she is not ready for prime time policial interview.
Don’t get me wrong, SS is a “keeper”. She is doing a great job and adding a lot to the view. Perhaps she just needs more time before inteviewing the political talks.
She is a wonderful asset to the show, and I do not mean to sound nasty, because I am not.

  12. Tallfreak Says:

    Chelsea is so funny!

  13. Erika Says:

“Chelsea said that dating a redheaded man is not a good thing, because when you wake up and look over at him, it looks like he has a clown in a leg lock.”:D LOL
Do you think EH really expected this as the answer to her question?

I also like when CF said England is the butt of Scotland.

Funny guests today; all the hosts were laughing, even BW was smiling- although she seemed taken aback a couple times with CH.

  14. Sandy Says:

I got to watch the show today, and really enjoyed it.

I think Cindy did okay as a guest host.

I did note that Elisabeth ask Cindy about receipt-gate, but she sort of, IMO, ..how shall I put it..buttered over it.
    Not that I feel it’s a big deal, I don’t.
(the receipt thing, or Elisabeth’s sugar coating).

:) Lisa, I’m also sure that after being married for 28 years that Cindy has seen her husband loose his temper. I think what she was trying to say was that it wasn’t as big an issue as some make it, in her opinion.

I really enjoyed both Craig & Chelsea.
This is the first time I’ve seen Chelsea.

  15. Lisa Says:

    Sandy:

Even Winnie wrote what I also heard Cindy say
“She has never seen a temper.”
I find that really hard to believe.

  16. Sandy Says:

    # 16, Lisa,

I was agreeing with you. :)
I believe she “has to have” witnessed some forms of a bad temper or anger in 28 years of marriage.
And I too heard her say that, she has never seen a temper.
I was trying to explain what I think “she wants to project”. That “she” doesn’t see his outburst as temper, but passion.

  17. Lisa Says:

    Ok Thanks Sandy :)

  18. louiseinalabama Says:

I tivo’d today’s show so I’ll be able to enjoy it without any interruptions later tonight. I decided to check the recap to see how it went today. It sounds like it was a pretty good show. I’m so happy to know Mrs. McCain proudly wore her MOMS pin in support of our brave son’s and daughter’s that are unselfishly serving our country.

  19. Lisa Says:

    louiseinalabama:
Don’t you have two children in Iraq?

  20. May Says:

I thought Cindy McCain did a good job today. She poo-pooed EH’s attempt to put down Hillary when EH said “Do you think that Hillary could judge a good beer the way she chugged one down”? EH never misses a chance to criticize the dems. She/Cindy looked like twins today in their dark blazers and sparkling golden locks. I turned it off after EH kept carrying on about the “blinky”..so stay home and get some sleep. Oh wait, she’s the family breadwinner now and can’t quit. Oh woe and alas!

  21. louiseinalabama Says:

Yes, I have 2 sons in Iraq. My oldest is on his third tour of duty. He’s a supporter of John McCain. Although, my youngest is still “undecided” granted, he was only 17 during the last presidential election so this will be his first time voting. I’m sure eventually he’ll make the RIGHT decision. We have such a huge amount of respect for Senator McCain. He’s an amazing American and I’ll be proud to show my support for him in Nov.

  22. Lisa Says:

Joy was right when she said that the majority of military families are supporting senator Obama and Ron Paul.

  24. Julianne Says:

Louiseinalabama - thank you for your support of this country and your sons’ time serving. Those of us who are enjoying our freedom do truly appreciate it.

Now a question - I have asked this before but can’t find anyone who can answer it. I do not mean this to be inappropriate in any way - I’m truly looking for an answer. Can you explain to me supporting the current government - i.e., I’m tired of the war and I don’t have my children there. I find it difficult to continue to support. Can you give me some perspective, please? Thank you!

  25. LouiseInAlabama Says:

Interesting, Lisa…I’m wondering were there any military families polled? I know many military families that are McCain supporters.

  26. Lisa Says:

“I know many military families that are McCain supporters.”

    They are in the minority.

  27. LouiseInAlabama Says:

Hi Julianne, This is my perspective…Based on the available information at the time and considering terrorist had invaded our country on 9/11, President Bush along with the majority of Congress elected to invade Iraq. If you’d remember, most Americans supported that decision. The president kept the Nation briefed on the threat posed to the U.S. and its allies by Saddam Hussein’s programmes of weapons of mass destruction and the possibility that he would pass along those arms to al Qaeda. I don’t believe this Adminstration wanted to go to war immediately but they had to make a decision about protecting our country. Even now, after finding out that there were no WMD and with two sons over there fighting on the front lines, I do not think we should withdraw until the violence is under control. Even though, the US has liberated a country from an oppressize dictatorship there’s still much more that needs to be done. The war may be violent and it may take a while, but I think the world will be a better place for future generations.

  28. rainlillie Says:

I must say that all of the information that has come out since, says opposite of what you’ve stated. Report after reoprt suggest that this was a “rush to war.”
The Iraqi people and the world are not better off because America invaded Iraq.
Terrorists are all over the world and I fail to see how having our troops stuck policing a civil war has made America safer. Our economy has been hurt badly by this war, not to mention America’s reputation.

  29. Julianne Says:

LouiseinAlabama - thank you for your very kind and well written response.

I do indeed remember that, many of us, did support the war at the offset. I remain hopeful that this war will be something that we, one day, see as a positive thing.

Until then, I want to thank you for your response amd persective. I will keep your sons in my thoughts and prayers!

  30. rainlillie Says:

“I remain hopeful that this war will be something that we, one day, see as a positive thing.”

I truly doubt that will happen. Too much has been lost and not enough has been gained.

  31. LouiseInAlabama Says:

Thank you so much. You don’t know how much that means to me, Julianne. May God Continue to Bless You.

  32. Andy Says:

Did anyone notice before the first commercial break, Whoopi looked irritated and said “We have to go to commercial” and then Barbara said ” We have time for just a minute”. It felt very tension filled to me.

  33. Sandy Says:

    Louise,
I want to as well say that I respect and greatly honor your sons who serve our country and us. May they stay safe, and I wish them God Speed.
I am from a large military family, from my grandfather, father, husband, uncles, cousins, right on down to a nephew who just was discharged 6 months ago, who served 2 tours in Iraq.
I understand support for the War in Iraq. I do. I have long had such mixed feelings concerning it, it is not a simple issue for me.
Lately though I find myself feeling that it is time for our troopas to come home.
It really is confusing for me.

  34. Random Musings Says:

I watched the show today for the first time in ages. The one thing I noticed was that when Joy was criticizing the way the questions were handled on the last debate, BW cut her off and changed the subject quickly. There was a comment made about GS and Cg and the topic owas over!

Craig Ferguson and Chelsea Handler were very, very funny!

And I changed my opinion of CIndy McCain…I always thought she was a Stepford…she’s not! Her warmth and humor were shown today.

  35. Erika Says:

Andy, I thought Whoopi was irritated b/c the producers were talking in her ear telling her to go to commercial (I think she said 4xs) and BW wouldn’t let her do her job and “moderate.”

Also, it does seem like Sherri’s absence for both McCain and his wife was intentional.

  36. Sandy Says:

    # 34 Random Musings

Her warmth and humor were shown today.

    I agree

  37. rainlillie Says:

“I have long had such mixed feelings concerning it, it is not a simple issue for me.
Lately though I find myself feeling that it is time for our troopas to come home.
It really is confusing for me.”

    Sandy:
You and I have very different political Views, but I must say, that you seem very sincere when discussing your feelings about war. You don’t stick to talking points and your thoughts seem to really be heartfelt.

  38. LouiseInAlabama Says:

Thank you Sandy, you’re always so kind and thoughtful. The following link is a about one of the soldier’s, Army Sergeant Michael Carlson, who was in my oldest son’s David platoon, that was killed while in Iraq. I guess after reading and listening to his story along with countless others, you’ll understand why I feel so strongly about Iraq’s destiny. http://familiesunitedmission.com/docs/families/midwest/carlson.shtml

  39. annon Says:

Enough lives have been lost. It’s time to bring our troops home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Lopez Says:

Annon, I agree. It’s easy for those who don’t have members of their family in the war or those who have family members there but they return unharmed to approve of this war.

  41. Sandy Says:

    # 37 Rainlillie

    :) thanks,

  42. Sandy Says:

    # 38, Louise,
    You are welcome.
I think I can probably already understand your feelings about Iraq’s destiny, without reading the article.
However thanks for the link, and I want to read it.

  43. maryellen Says:

I thought EH’s whole story about losing sleep because of the “binky” melodrama was damage control for her zoning out last week (not knowing Chris Rock’s mother was sitting 2 feet away on the couch).

  44. Aileeny Says:

I agree with rain, Sandy is always thoughtful and just stating her opinions and not rhetoric. I love Sandy because she has her opinions but she in forthright in her convinctions. She appreciates life and honor… thats my girl.. We may not always agree but she is stand up. I cant argue with people who have a contemporary perception on our politics and couple them with her morals.. thats what politics are all about…

  45. Sandy Says:

    Thank you Aileen
I can absolutely say the same about you. :)

Actually I think that it is true of most of us!!!!!

  46. Stephen'swife Says:

I absolutely ADORED Elisabeth’s jacket. I want it!! I’m going crazy trying to find it… If anyone is able to provide label or shopping details, PLEASE do! Thanks in advance…
