The View April 22nd Recap: Deirdre Imus and Dee Dee Myers
Today on The View was an “hour of hot topics.” I really don’t understand why they call it that when it includes celebrity guests. Maybe someone can explain it to me. Although Mia Farrow was initially on the guest list for today’s episode, she was not on the show.
It is Sherri Shepherd’s birthday, so Whoopi stood up and danced and sang for her. She turns 41 today. It is also her son’s birthday today. (Video of Whoopi Goldberg’s dance for Sherri at the end of this post)
Today is the Pennsylvania primary and Whoopi said that a study shows that people vote for the candidate close to their age. Elisabeth joked that she likes to double her age and add 10 to get her candidate. Joy said that Barack Obama is getting the young vote, Hillary Clinton the older vote, and McCain is getting the dead vote. Barbara said that she wouldn’t have made that joke when Cindy McCain was on yesterday and Joy said that she had to be polite when she was on.
They talked about how experience is important and Elisabeth said that is why McCain is the right candidate and a few people in the audience clapped. Whoopi said that there is so much garbage to clean up that no matter who gets into the White House, they won’t be able to get everything done that they are promising.
In the New York Times there is an article that talks about what makes people happy. He said that things are never as bad as you think they are and never as good as you think they are. He said the most important thing about happiness is friendships and human relationships. Elisabeth said that her grandmother is thriving at a nursing home because of the friendships that she has there. Barbara said that is why she loves to come to the show and then the panel starting singing “Friends…” Joy said that the ability to rationalize things helps, like saying that you never liked your ex-husband anyway. Sherri said that she was depressed and crying yesterday and then remembered that her mom died at the age she is now and she should be happy to be alive and have a beautiful son.
President Bush appeared on tape on Deal or No Deal to give a message to a contestant on the show who fought in Iraq. The presidential candidates all appeared on tape on WWE Smackdown vs. Raw last night. Joy pointed out that John McCain mispronounced “Barack.” Elisabeth said it looked like an SNL skit. Joy said that the candidates all needed to show their sense of humor because the late night show attacks on all of them have been increasing and the jokes about McCain’s age have been relentless. Whoopi said that the candidates should be at all the places where Americans are, like car races. Joy joked then not the library because people don’t go there. She said that she never liked the library.
The next topic was how Kristy Yamaguchi revealed on Dancing with the Stars last night that she was born with two club feet and had to overcome that. Sherri said that she takes back the things she said about Kristy having an advantage. Joy said that the show is like a telethon with everyone’s personal conditions. Joy told Sherri that she needs her arm in sling in order to get on the show. Sherri said that Mario was a nice thing to look at because she is celibate and he practically had sex on the dance floor.
Joy Behar will be on Air America radio this afternoon and tomorrow from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Barbara said that she and Bill Geddie have a show every Monday night on SIRIUS and Elisabeth was on last night. Barbara said that Joy can come on her show and she will give her a forum. Joy said that she will have a forum on the Air America show.
There is a book called My Beautiful Mommy which explains plastic surgery to children. Barbara said that the book deals with tummy tucks and nose jobs, but doesn’t deal with when mommy comes home with a whole new face. Elisabeth said that you are supposed to be teaching your children to love themselves for who they are. What if the child has the same nose that the mother just changed? Whoopi said that you are telling the kids that they aren’t good enough. Sherri wondered what Michael Jackson tells his kids.
Whoopi said that elective surgery is scary because of the things that go wrong. Joy said that she had several serious surgeries, including an ectopic pregnancy and coming out of anesthesia is not fun. Sherri said that she wants a butt to go with her chest, but worries they would accidentally put memory foam in. Whoopi said they can make her one in wardrobe that won’t be permanent. Barbara then said “in deference to plastic surgery, most operations are safe.”
Deirdre Imus appeared to promote her book Growing Up Green. She said that toxins take a huge toll on our children and are found everywhere in common chemicals. Deirdre said that not to worry about going completely green, just take it one step at a time. Plastic baby bottles have hormone disrupters and people should use glass bottles.
When you are pregnant, you should look for a green OB/GYN and pediatrician. They will look at the whole person and have less reliance on toxins.
Vaccinations have a lot of toxins within them. Elisabeth said that she was getting a panic attack thinking about all this. Deirdre said that they can spread the vaccines out or decide which ones are right for your child. Joy said that putting chemicals in there seems criminal.
Deirdre recommends keeping a food diary for how the child feels, what they eat, etc. Barbara said, “who has time.” Deirdre said it takes five minutes and you can figure out what caused an allergy for example. Joy asked how they all survived without these books, but Barbara had her move on to the products.
Deirdre said that hand sanitizers are not healthy because of the alcohol content and other products parents use are not healthy. Elisabeth said, “Apparently I am killing my whole family.” Deirdre showed off these alternative products:
Hand sanitizers: Hand Sanz or Thieves hand purifier
Baby wipes: Clean Well, Desert Essence, or Herban Essentials
For bruising: Arnicare gel or Arniflora
For babies: Calendula cream or Weleda baby
Most of the products are readily available in stores. Whoopi said that she knows the products work because she uses them. Elisabeth asked if they are FDA approved and Deirdre said that if you have a green doctor they will recommend these products over the ones with the chemicals.
Dee Dee Myers author of Why Women Should Rule the World appeared on the show. She was the press secretary for Bill Clinton. She said that women in positions of power struggle to balance being tough and being called a bitch. Men don’t have the same issue. Dee Dee said that Hillary Clinton has had to show how tough she is in her campaign.
Women should not rule the world at the expense of men, adding that she loves men and married one. Women should just be in more positions of power because they bring different problem solving skills and there would be less violence.
Dee Dee thought when Hillary got emotional it was authentic and people seeing it on video were able to understand her and relate to her.
She said that there are several reasons why other countries have female leaders and the United States does not, including cultural reasons, as well as the difference in how people are elected prime minister in other countries. She said regardless of what happens with Hillary, she has moved the bar forward for women.

Hi Winnie:
Regarding your question about the HOT TOPICS including guests…… I used to think the same thing. Perhaps the gals run out of “steam” and need the extra boost. As long as they sit at the table, rather then the couch , I guess it qualifies as HOT TOPICS discussion. Both Deirdre Imus and Dee Dee Myers were promoting their books, but at least they were on current topics.I would still like to have the 4 or 5 regular hosts, during the once a week of full topics. I like that segment the best. It feels as though they are afraid to stay on one topic very long on other days and I always had hoped they would allow more time for discussions, on the one day of all hot topics. By having guests…. it cuts each topic right back to the same limited “talk time” , as any other day. IMO

Winnie or anybody…..
I have a “Dumb-Dumb” question. It is regarding how we enter and reply to our comments. I am no young chicken, so please cut me some slack. ha ha
QUESTION:
When I submit a comment, my reply quickly shows on the screen. ( that is the good news ) The bad news, is that I have scroll up and down and click on comments , in order to respond again. How do you all comment back and forth to each other, without having to keep scrolling back and forth.Do you re-enter or am I actually doing it right? After I place a reply, it comes up on the screen right away, but I have to click and go back to your comments. If I am making any sense at all, please help Gramma Marilyn get computer smart.

I also thought it was shady that they said it was an hour of hot topics when it definitely was not.
I think Sherri looks amazing, but she is starting to remind me of the shrinking Star Jones. Every time she is on she seems thinner and thinner?
thanks again for the recaps!

Thanks Winnie,
As always for your recaps. i didn’t see the show today.
# 1 & 2 Marilyn,
1, I agree with you, I like having the original host only on Hot Topics day, to allow for longer discussions on some of the topics. Of course from their stand point I suppose if they are going to discuss a topic, that someone has a new book about, then it seems appropriate that person add to the discussion.
2. From your description, this is how I comment and reply, as well. I don’t know if there is a quicker way or not.
I absolutely agree 100% with Elisabeth that “you should be teaching your children to love themselves for who they are’.
I loved Sherri’s joke. That she wants a butt to go with her chest, but worries they would accidentally put memory foam in.
loved it.
I would have found Deirdre interesting.
I agree with Dee Dee, regardless what happens with Hilary, she has moved the bar froward for women.

OMG.. This episode what so mundane.. let me scroll up to find a comment.. brb..
ok I found one..
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHERRY!!!!!!!!!! U GO GIRL.. GET UR GROOVE ON!!!
ok that being said..
Ok so it was said experience is why you would vote is impotent.. .. well EH chimed in and said her age needs to be doubled and add a zillion years.. something like dat..
so I assume thats why she would vote for Mccain…thats seizure citizen McCain.. (omg.. did i type that outloud????) How can she ever align herself with someone so much older with no real life expanctacny?? OMG.. this is a girl 30 - 31 years old and aligns herself with old peeps point of view.. my god.. does she wear depends too??
We get wisdome from our seniors.. lord.. I think I am almost one of them.. but you get wisdom.. you build your wisdom on your life experiences and you make a new life based on environment and current culture. My god. If I took from my bible or my forefathers literally.. I would be as archaic as moses. We evolve as peeps and take from the past and make a new as we evolve. Its the reason we dont wear knickers today!!!!
Ok I get it… EH should wear knickers, an uncomforatble corsett and a hoop skirt. Now you represent your politics. We need to broaden our childrens future and embrace todays society and embrace our morals at the same time. WE NEED TO EVOLVE PEEPS!! CAN I GET A WHOOP WHOOP!!!!
P.S. I am sorry Sherry was depressed yesterday due to her moms passing. It takes a few years to cope with a passing of a parent. IMO we dont get passed passing of loved ones.. but we can only find coping skills.
Ok I need a plastic surgery book to help me make up my mind on which target is more important!!. ok its in my own mind.. but I can always imagine. Man I look good. ( in my own mind)
I commend the woman (Diedre) on helping your children go green. Their are alot of toxins in your childrens food, immunazations, etc that need to be looked at. We cant trust it because its on the market and because we were raised to think it was safe. ( no wonder autism is on the up) Not that its her message, but aweness is good.
Dee Dee Myers author of Why Women Should Rule the World said.. “Women should not rule the world at the expense of men” AMEN SISTA!!!! YOU GO GIRL!!!
I hear ya woman.. been trying.. they are all bastids.. lol.. no kidding.. I love the message.. You can have a great force in your life, but make sure that you provide the same value. Dont rely but contribute to an equal relationship. All woman have value. Know what it is and contribute appropriately. oh.. and dont take no chit!! HAH!!
I’m just saying…

I agree Jason, Aileen’s post was Hilarious
I admire “her gift” of humor and wit, and always enjoy reading her comments.
I love how she makes her point and expresses her opinion with humor. She’s GREAT!

Awe Jason and Sandy thank you for the kind words.. I often think I post for my own self righteous point of crack..
Sandy is my girl thou. We dont neccesarily have the same politics but she certainly expresses herself with serious heart and we are aligned on family matters and importance on church and state. Sandy and I are the best example of seperate parties who agree. I really think we are both parties of mother issues and boys who take part in a war. In most ways.. we are the same! Ok the only thing we dont agree upon is EH and I can deal with that. Who cares on what is most important.. our familys.
Crack peeps.. thats the word for today..
I’m just saying…
