The View April 24th Recap: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

by Winnie McCarthy

tina-fey-amy-poehler-baby-mama-the-view.jpg The first topic on The View today was that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is concerned that people are voting for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman or Barack Obama just because he is Black. Joy Behar said that they have pretty much the same platform so that could be how people chose between them. Sherri Shepherd pointed out that there have been other Black candidates who did not get as far, so it is more than just Black people voting for him because he is Black. She said that he is very qualified and she is proud to see a Black man go so far and be in such a place of power.

Whoopi said that the fact that Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama can be president knocks you out because you have never seen it before and people are “voting their dream.” Sherri said to Elisabeth that she has grown up with people in power who like her, white, and Sherri has not had that before. Elisabeth said that she is just saying that we need to look at the whole picture. Whoopi said that is a “white way of looking at things.” Elisabeth said she will take her white goggles off. Sherri and both Whoopi said that she can’t. Whoopi said that she cannot explain to her fully how Black people feel about this.

Joy asked Elisabeth what it is about Barack and Hillary that she is so against. She started talking about Barack’s relationship to Reverend Wright and Joy said that she meant the policy. Elisabeth said that Barack does not have much history in policy, but she is concerned about the taxing of middle America. Joy asked what McCain is going to do to help middle America and Elisabeth said that he will reduce the gas tax, which Joy called “a drop in the bucket.” (This segment actually had a lot more details, but I couldn’t really keep up with everything Elisabeth was saying, although it was noting she hasn’t said before).

Whoopi said that she wants to put the Reverend Wright issue to bed. She said that no reverends are perfect. She noted that Billy Graham was the spiritual leader for many presidents, although he “had problems with Jewish people.” She said the issue is whether Barack believes as Wright believes and she does not think he does. She added that she has friends who say things that she doesn’t agree with. Elisabeth said the issue is not going to go away. Whoopi said that it should so that we can get to the policy issues. Elisabeth then repeated her same argument again about Wright. Whoopi told her that they didn’t have as much time as they thought and needed to move on. Elisabeth said that she was patient when Whoopi was talking and kept going. While they argued, Joy and Sherri whispered something to each other her. Whoopi also said that McCain should not have given a speech at Jerry Falwell’s school after the comments that he made. Joy later said that the Republicans will use this issue in the general election and Elisabeth said “as well they should.”

Whoopi then moved on to whether Jimmy Fallon should take over for Conan O’Brien. Joy said, “Sure. They’re not giving it to me.” Sherri said that the demographic for late night is men. Joy said that is because they say it is the demographic. Sherri said that they have had women and it didn’t work. Joy said that because one woman failed doesn’t mean that no women would be good in late night.

Then they talked about American Idol.

After the break Danica Patrick came on as a surprise guest! Last weekend she became the first woman to win an Indy Car race. Joy asked her why she thought it took so long for a woman to win. She said “the odds are against” women because not as many women come through and try racing. She said that everyone should dream big and follow though. The trophy she won was almost as tall as she is. Runner-up Helio Castroneves only won a very small trophy and was laughing on the podium. Danica said that she tries not to show her emotions because she wants her opponents to be intimidated, but she cried after she won because there was a lot under the skin that she had been holding back. She got a call from Tony LaRussa who told her that he has cried before and it is okay.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler appeared on the show to promote their new film Baby Mama. In the movie, Tina’s character enlists Amy’s character to act as a surrogate when she is unable to conceive herself. They have worked together 15 years in Chicago at an improv class. Tina joked it was like Christmas morning when someone else wanted to write a movie for them.

All the candidates have come by Saturday Night Live, where Amy plays Hillary Clinton. She said that all the candidates were fun.

Tina says Baby Mama is not a chick flick and there are a lot of funny dudes in the film and there is no Lifetime logo. She said to convince your husband or boyfriend to see it.

Amy and Tina have been compared to the Odd Couple, as well as Matt Damon and George Clooney. The last reference was after they made up stories in a magazine article about playing pranks on one another.

Tina has a romantic scene with Greg Kinnear in the film. Her real-life husband scored the film and had to watch the scenes over and over. Amy joked it was foreplay for them.

Sherri pointed out that Tina writes and stars on 30 Rock, which she called a fabulous show. Sherri has been on several times, and Joy and Whoopi have guest starred. Tina said that Elisabeth is the only one who hasn’t guest starred, so they need to get her on. She asked Elisabeth, “Are you willing to be in a bed with Alec Baldwin?” Sherri told her to say “yes” and Elisabeth changed the subject.

Whoopi asked why the title was “Baby Mama” with no apostrophe. Tina pretended to seriously explain the white suburban adaptation of hip-hop culture. Amy joked that the apostrophe didn’t test well, so they took it out.

Tina said that the comedic generation before her, like Gilda Radner and Mary Tyler Moore, really paved the way and opened the door that she was able to walk through.

Amy also has a cartoon that she has created for Nickelodeon called The Mighty B!

They then had a segment on bathing suit fashions. Despite the intro saying “style for all sizes,” the biggest model was maybe a 14. The majority were teeny tiny. They also had two kid models. The girl had a small bikini (which the guest called “age appropriate”?) and the little boy had long swim trucks and a shirt. I just don’t understand fashion. They then had a woman who was pregnant with twins.

Sherri will be doing the March of Dimes March for Babies this weekend Joy will be at the Berklee Center in Boston.

I just posted my rant at today’s show on the april 23rd section. I was too annoyed to wait for Winnie’s post. I think things got very heated today when Elisabeth started up with her silly speculation and “concern” about how people will vote. Her “concern” is b.s., just an opportunity to play the role of Sean Hannity on the show. Stupid stupid arguments, with her closed-minded look on her puss. I wondered what Joy & Sherri whispered to each other. I was very sorry to see them have to move so fast from the topic to late-night comedians.
I also noticed how quickly EH tried to move the topic from Bush when Joy said McCain endorsed his policies.

I hope Amy was checking out EH up close and personal so she can do an accurate send-up of her on Sat. Nite Live. The problem is, Eh would probably love the extra attention.

  2. mibi Says:

EH today showed me she does not follow her logic through. she say National security is a big thing for her and she worries about obama as comander and chief but when Joy ask whats her big issue she say the rev. wrigth. Also was she not the one who said she is a woman about policy and voting record yet she says she does not know about obama policy and joy has to prompt her to get her to talk about taxes. it just seems she is not even folowing her own logic. also while every election year i hope and pray people vote on the issues you can not aks people to not vote for someone because there a woman or black or there age when people are not voting for someone because they are a woman or black or age. ( i do not think people are voting for people ONLY because of a perosn race or gender or age it more of a cherry on top)

  3. May Says:

Maryellen, I completely agree with you on today’s show. Reminded me of EH spat (knock down, drag out) with Rosie. I detest EH and her continuing screeching, whining carrying on about the dems..if it isn’t Clinton, it’s Obama. She seems to be the foxspokesidiot. I read that Bawa/Bill had her on their radio show the other day. Wouldn’t it be nice if they were planning to switch EH from tv to radio?? T’would be nice to hear a gop view from someone who could carry on a conversation without ranting/railing,acting like a 10 year old. Just an idea.

  4. misslingdow Says:

    EH is a nit wit!!

  5. susieq Says:

eh’s comment about people only voting for hillary because she is a woman and obama because he is black is insulting hillary and obama as well as the people voting for them…eh is more concerned about people voting for them and not mccain

  6. donnaj Says:

I am soooo tired of Whoopi and Joy opening up a concern and then shutting EH down. Its not just EH that has a concern with how Americans are voting. On most news broadcasts they are talking to the issues of the public voting thier age, race or gender. EH didnt say she supported this…quite the contrary, she did in fact say that it was the wrong way to vote. I agree. I once again found it interesting that Joy asked EH what she felt McCain had to offer the country. When EH explained Joy disregarded every single agenda because they didnt support her own agenda.

Oh, and whispering amongst each other while someone is trying to make a point is not only poor manners but insulting futher makes the point that both Sherri and Joy come from a lesser class. Shame on both of them, they really need to watch thier behaviors and see how unbecoming they really appear.

I also loved how Joy clearly tried to engage all three of the guests to support her political agenda in supporting the democrats and bashing the republicans. All three were bright enough to see through her objective and either didnt agree or wouldnt lower thier own public personna to her level.

I also wonder how Joy felt that Danica received her very cooly compared to the other ladies.

I also agreed with Eh’s point…”Bush is NOT running for election”. She needs to get past this.

  7. Sandy Says:

I got to see the show today.
I know I’m going to be in the minority here, but I found “some things” very positive in the hot topics today.

In looking at the conversation as a whole, it was a good discussion to have. IMO.
I’m not defending Elisabeth, or how she expressed things today.
She is not the only person who thinks this way in the U.S.
I’m NOT talking about her issues with Senator Obama. I’m talking about race and gender.
I firmly believe that “some” people consider that when choosing their candidate.
I’ve had people say to me, that they are voting for senator Clinton because she is a woman. As well I’ve had people say to me, that they would never vote for a woman to be President. (even women).
I have not had anyone say to me anything regarding senator Obama, either way, regarding his race. But I feel sure that there are people who would, or would not vote for him simply because of race.
So I think this is a legitimate topic.

Should senator Clinton or senator Obama become president. It would be a huge milestone for our county. I honestly believe a good one, either way, and one we need.
Another reason I “liked” the conversation..Whoopi & Sherri were able to point out that Elisabeth, or for that matter, no white person can really understand the deep seeded feelings of a black person. They made an “excellent” point.
We need discussions like that in America.
Would it have been better if the discussion had been with someone other than Elisabeth?, maybe.
My point is we need discussions like this in America. If we are going to get past race and gender issues, we have to discuss it. Especially race, we have to learn how both sides see and feel things.

  8. Lajet Says:

I’m reposting what I posted (earlier today) another day because I couldn’t wait for today because I found it soooooooooooooooooooooo irritating. (which begs the question - so why do I watch? or care? It’s just TV. GMWAS)

I’m watching (actually WAS watching) today (couldn’t stand it and went for a walk). I’ll probably repeat myself when today’s recap comes up. Listening to EH argue with Whoopi was sooooooooooooooooooo ugly.

It was like arguing in Wonderland (as in Alice in Wonderland) where black means white and words mean what you want them to mean. It was sort of like, what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is ours. She goes on and on, and then when someone else is talking, she wants to share time.

They point out her contradictions and she just goes blithely long and ignores the contradiction. SHe doesn’t seem to care what others think. She doesn’t seem to care if she is misunderstood. She doesn’t seem to care to clarify her thoughts to show how they are really consistent. SHe seems interested in spewing out her talking points. When asked to back up McCains qualities they were often vague. McCain cares about national security (as if Obama & Clinton don’t - ooops no time to discuss have to move on.) McCain cares about taxes for middle-class (as if Dems don’t - what about tax cuts for the rich, oops sorry, my ADD mind has moved on). McCain cares about the economy (even though he has said he doesn’t “get”the economy) Now if EH had argued their individual plans, that would be interesting, but EH isn’t that in to details.

Well, enough of my rant. What a waste. including me writing this stupid rant which will make no difference to good of the earth and/or mankind. I need to go clean myself off and do something meaningful.

  9. Lajet Says:

    Great quotes from today:

McCain “believes in the economy! (when spewing forth how McCain is different from Clinton & Obama. It’s not clear if she means he thinks the economy important, or whether he thinks things are going well and we’re not really experiencing economic problems.)

EH is concerned that people are voting for Hilary Clinton because she is a woman or Barack Obama just because he is Black and “we need to look at the whole picture.” (yea, being black or female always works. Just ask SHirley Chisolm, JEsse Jackson, Geraldine Ferraro. oh, and what about the issue of people who WON’T vote for Obama because he’s black or Clinton because she’s female? Does she care about that. Is that part of the whole picture - Funny, I didn’t hear her say anything about that.

Can’t remember the line, but when Whoopi was talking about seeing things through minority eyes, didn’t she say somethign about being discrimnated against because she couldn’t play on a softball team because she was a girl? (yea, that really puts your mortgage, your career, your job, your physical safety, your social contacts, your future, your children’s future is jeopardy. I’m sure being excluded was unpleasant if not painful - but not even close to the same league. Does she really think it is a fair comparison? She’s a college graduate FHS

I do think that EH is over her head on this show, and is being used by others for their own purposes and agenda, and she has no idea. I think she is young and immature, and I feel sorry for her being put in this position. However, I don’t think that means her absurd assertions, and inconsistencies, should go unchallenged. I was a stupid kid (way too stupid to admit how badly) and the way kids have been maturing for centuries is by living with the consequences of being young and immature. I’m just glad I didn’t do it on a national stage, and I wonder about those that are propping her up. It’s good for her bank account (no small thing) but not for her soul.

P.S. Winnie - I’m with your on the “age-approrpiate” two-piece bathing suit! I don’t care if prepubescent girls don’t wear a bathing suit (well, bottoms would be nice) - I used to belong to a pool where that was common. BUT why put a prepubescent body in a bikini! It just doesn’t look right. Woman are sexy. THat’s a good thing. Little girls aren’t! Maybe I’m showing my age.

  10. Dana Says:

Hillary’s a woman and Barack is Black. So people will vote for them because of that. Why isn’t anyone talking about the fact that Seniors will vote for McCain just because he’s old. People feel comfortable with people who resemble themselves. It’s that simple. It’s up to the candidates to impress people with qualities other than familiarity.

  11. Lajet Says:

PLEASE CONSIDER - ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A FAN OF SHERRI:
For some reason, I didn’t click on the Happy Birthday Sherri until today. I just figured it wasn’t going to say much, I already knew it was her bithday. I imagine from the lack of resposnes, the same is true for other people. I encourage everyone who is enjoying Sherri, appreciates how hard she is working, to go over and give her a belated Happy Birthday. She’s been kind of down this week, and can you imagine how cool it would be to go to the website and have a BUNCH of well wishes. I’ve heard that she does read this blog.

  12. DeeDee Says:

“Hillary’s a woman and Barack is Black. So people will vote for them because of that. ”

No, they won’t. Not if they disagree with their policies and not if they think they will be dangerous, stupid, horrible leaders. Like Mibi said, race, gender, and age is “the cherry on the top” for many people. But people are not going to vote for a president JUST because of race, gender, or age unless they tend to agree with their policies in the first place. EH’s stupid argument was that race and gender are THE ONLY REASONS why some are voting for BO & HC. That’s a kindergartener’s argument.

  13. cnick Says:

The problem with EH is that she has no empathy, even for her own child, the binky fairy and all that horrible nonsense. She is as dogmatic as she can be, and she does not belong on the view, she has only one tight little view through the eyes of Hannity and those like him.

  14. rainlillie Says:

“Woman are sexy. THat’s a good thing. Little girls aren’t! Maybe I’m showing my age.”

ITA! I took my ten -year old daughter shopping yesterday and it was hard to find clothing that looked as though it was for a child. The shorts were way too short and the tops were too sexy.
After going to three different stores, I finally found clothing that was to my liking.

  15. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: EH: “Hillary’s a woman and Barack is Black. So people will vote for them because of that. ”

    poster: No, they won’t.

That’s kind of (as in “very”) insulting! And not even backed up by the evidence. Just ask Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson, Geraldine Ferraro how much of an advatage being black or being a woman is. Does EH care about the people who WON’T vote for a woman or minority, or is that a non-issue to her? (I suspect so)

  16. Lajet Says:

“She is as dogmatic as she can be, and she does not belong on the view,”

I was thinking about the saying “What if they gave a war and nobody came.” Well, since it doesn’t appear EH is going anywhere very soon, and it seems like the other 3 (maybe 4) are getting very tired/irritated with EH, what if they all pulled a Rosie, and they gave “A View” and nobody came. Well, Barbara would undoubtedly come.

But if BW and BG want EH, let them have her.
And they can make a show around EH. I wouldn’t even mind. I ignore Hannity and most the rest of FOX news. It’s America, free speech and all. But watching The View currently is like having a pebble in your shoe. It’s just irritating.

  17. Stacee Says:

Exactly, Dee Dee (post #12). Well said!

I strongly feel that if Hillary or Barack were Republicans, Bitsy would not even have voiced this “concern”.

  18. Sandy Says:

    # 11 lajet,
Thanks for pointing posters in this direction. That is very thoughtful of you. :)

  19. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: I also agreed with Eh’s point…”Bush is NOT running for election”. She needs to get past this.

RESPONSE: Neither is Rev. Wright, but EH is like a dog with a bone on that one. And Bush may not be running, but McCain has chosen to identify himself with Bush’s war (and probably not distanced himself from other things like tax cuts for the wealthy - I think) and several other thing (although he has distinguished himself on the environment)

  20. DeeDee Says:

    One more thing:

George Bush’s presidency is ABSOLUTELY relevant! I say bring it up constantly to Eh and anyone else who still supports him. It is the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war and quagmire war and his economic policies that we are stuck with. People like EH who are still gung-ho about them should show some spine instead of pretending he is “old news.” Bull! . The policies he put in place will be here for us to suffer through long after he vacates the White House.

  21. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: …”Bush is NOT running for election”. She needs to get past this.

    Good point Dee Dee (#20)

and yet another thought: Does that mean EH won’t bring up Bill and the policies of his administration when talking about Hilary?

And is party affiliation and party platform irrelevant? When you vote for a president, you are also voting for a party. The ramifications reach into the House and Senate, as well as state governments. EH probably doesn’t realize this since she doesn’t seem that into understanding politics.

Shooting down EH’s (lack of) consistency is like shooting ducks in a barrel.

  22. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: … Thanks for pointing posters in this direction (#11). That is very thoughtful of you. :)

RESPONSE: Thanks Sandy. I think Winnie gets the credit for being the thoughtful one, she started it. I see that several people have added to the well wishes. I bet that will make Sherri smile. : ) I’m tempted to put a goal and see if we can make “X” number of well wishes, but I hesitate - I don’t want to fall short and then have Sherri feel bad. I even debated whether to do this. But I think people will come forward for Sherri. : ) So please, eveyone who likes Sherri, bop on over to the Happy Birthday Sherri entry and add some well wishes.

  23. rainlillie Says:

…”Bush is NOT running for election”

He doesn’t have to run, McCain is going to pick up where Bush left off.
    ————————————-
“At the White House today, President Bush threw his support behind Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). In a press conference after a private lunch, a reporter asked the duo how McCain would “make the case that you’re going to provide the change that the voters seem to want.”

Bush quickly cut in, declaring that McCain is “not going to change”:

BUSH: And the good news about our candidate there will be a new president, a man of character and courage, but he’s not going to change when it comes to taking on the enemy.”

    http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/05/mccain-bush-change/

  24. Ann Says:

EH’s logic is crazy. “People vote for Hillary because she is a woman”, “People vote for Obama because he is black”. Oh yeah, how does that explain thousands of years of male politicians, does that mean people voted for all of them “because they were men”.

  25. carmen Says:

“I am soooo tired of Whoopi and Joy opening up a concern and then shutting EH down.”

What show are YOU watching? Shutting the big-mouth blonde down how? She vomited her pathetic talking points at such warp speed, you could say that she actually got to speak more than Whoopi & Joy & Sherri combined.

I wonder if the Fox Fools get royalties for every talking point of theirs Elisabeth repeats? To say that this was a good discussion about race is like saying Twinkies is a nutritious meal.

Sherri & Joy were probably giggling with deja-vu. This time last year they were sitting in the middle of the Rosie-Elisabeth smack-down. Funny how Elisabeth is still throwing the same babyish fits long after Rosie is gone.

Later on, Whoopi mentioned how “tired” Elisabeth is. This was said earlier this week, wasn’t it? Maybe they are setting the stage for announcing at the end of the season Elisabeth will be leaving the show for GREENER pasture$$$ … let’s all start lighting candles and hope this is the case!

  26. Jilly Says:

“Later on, Whoopi mentioned how “tired” Elisabeth is. This was said earlier this week, wasn’t it? Maybe they are setting the stage for announcing at the end of the season Elisabeth will be leaving the show for GREENER pasture$$$ … let’s all start lighting candles and hope this is the case!”

Ya know, Dr. Laura is a big Fox gal and she doesn’t support any woman working with babies at home. Maybe she could convince EH to quit and stay home like a proper republican.

I really don’t know how the rest of them sit through her blatherings. I am so embarassed that she is from my generation. She comes acrossed as so uneducated and out of touch with reality. Joy often looks like she is going to jump over the table at her and I think that is the only reason I continue to watch…someday…someday I am going to get to see somebody else go off on her.

I really wish that every time she brings up Rev. Wright that one of the others brings up Pastor Hagge, Farwell, Robertson and beat her down with it.

  27. BlondeBlogger Says:

Wow…I guess Republicans like me are in the minority here. :)

I had a question….in the beginning of the show, they had a teaser about Starbucks and how what they had to tell you would make you rethink ordering there. I get Starbucks all the time (did today).

Does anyone know what this news was supposed to be? (I’m guessing it was bumped because of all the arguing)

  28. msroncon Says:

So sick of the ugly clothes EH wears.

  29. Meredith Says:

I think Elizabeth is dispicable. She is incapable of any self reflection. She is incapable of thinking about anything said to her. Like a machine gun she just spews her ignorant superficial statements and then pauses only long enough to reload to launch another cartridge full of closed minded defensiveness. She hasn’t had a thoughtful mature moment on the show.

  30. cnick Says:

I think EH is a narcissist, which explains her lack of empathy and self reflection. She is not watchable or “listenable” any more for me. I’m through with the view!!!

  31. Andrea Says:

As a black woman (& a regular Viewer) I was stupified by EH’s position yesterday morning.
Everyday that I begin to believe that this land we love is more egalitarian, someone like EH comes along & throw water on my convictions.
I know I should know better - ’cause girlfriend is primarily doing this for money. But the rantings of one very privileged white woman, is supposed to dismiss the hope & joy of so many members of today’s electorate (be they BLue or Red).
But - just like my decision to cut fried foods out of my diet this morning, may be I should censor my talikng Points diet. After all after hearing the very learned EH views, I have to go face a university auditorium of 50 - 160 young people to talk about social issues.
So I’ll go back to reading more academic journals & leave EH to her money making!

  32. May Says:

Blondblogger: They were talking about how many calories certain drinks from Starbucks has. Check it out on AOL…not only Starbks but many calories and fats are in foods served by the other fast food places.

  33. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: Wow…I guess Republicans like me are in the minority here. :)

RESPONSE: I’m curious. Why would you say that?

  34. Julianne Says:

Seems like most of us aren’t annoyed just because someone is a Republican. Most of us are annoyed with that particular Republican and her unwillingness/inability to hear anyone’s viewpoint besides her own.

  35. Aileen Says:

OK MY TWO CENTS!!!! :-) Whats all the hoopla that blacks will vote for Barack and woman will vote for Hillary…. uh… if you are a liberal voting in the primary… WHAT OTHER CHOICE DO WE HAVE? We have Hillary and Barack…thats who is left! and the other choices are????? So the question is… white liberal men.. are they going to vote for Hillary cause she is white or for Barack cause he is a man???? PLEASE peeps. The great thing about our country is that we are allowed to vote for anybody we want!!! Its up to the candidate to campaign their platform and convince us to vote for them.(Its better to vote for someone on the ballad so not to throw your vote away..)

Now in regards to the actual election and not the primaries.. is EH worried that black and female votes will take away from McCain? That is the million dollar questions peeps. I think she was trying to make peeps think about voting for the ol white man. Shes trying to subliminally (did I spell that right?) suggest that we shouldnt vote with our hearts and mind but vote for the same ol’.

For the most part, peeps will stay within their parties unless they have been on the fence. Fortunately, some Pubs have defected their party for reasons that are evident. Is that what EH is worried about? Rabid spittering statements from EH cause she has a sinking feeling a DEM most likely be elected?

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN U TURD!!!!!

    I’m just saying….. :-)

  36. Aileen Says:

    Correction: Ballad = Ballot :-)

Wow…I guess Republicans like me are in the minority here.

There are Pubs who are regulars here as well and we all the most part can agree to disagree on some subjects. THere are particular party issues that can cause heated debated here, but we try not to attack each other and just state our opinions. Now.. that being said, usually MY opinion is the most logical and I am in charge :-)

Just kidding.. all are welcome here and Winnie our blog owner does a great job moderating peeps who are extreme.

  38. Aileen Says:

Ok just watched Obamas conceded speach for PA.. ok. watch the video.. a whole bunch of white folks there.. again.. why make an issue of a non issue?? dont fall into peeps.. just vote from ur hearts.. peace out..and POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!! :-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaQwbFvDK6I

    I’m just saying….

  39. SarahS Says:

    #38/Aileen
” why make an issue of a non issue?? dont fall into peeps.. ”

    What do you mean, Aileen?

The “peeps” here on this blog are not guilty of making an issue out of a non issue. The complaints here about EH’s absurd comments on Thursday are valid complaints. EH is not persuading the complainers here to not vote for Obama, or Hillary.

I have a hard time following your comments. I hope you write back and explain what you mean here. Thanks.

  40. Elsie Says:

‘Whoopi said that she wants to put the Reverend Wright issue to “bed”‘ How fitting of Whoopi! Ha, ha!

  41. Sandy Says:

I don’t think I should speak for Aileen,

But my interpretation of her comment is that,
she agrees with you, and the other comments here.
There is no issue, as to what E.H. implied her concern was.

My observation is that there are many people out there “trying” to make this an issue.
not “only” Elisabeth. I don’t watch any cable news, so not from there that I’ve heard it, or read it. Matter of fact I just read an article that implied the same thing, that people are supporting either senator Obama, or senator Clinton along race and gender lines. So I think the media is helping to make this an issue.
It is out there, and I thought a valid topic for discussion. (if they had stuck to that). However the hosts got off topic, and it went in a different direction, with Elisabeth bringing up Rev. Wright again.

My own personal opinion is that in a small amount of cases this could be true, but certainly not in the majority of cases. .

  42. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: My own personal opinion is that in a small amount of cases this could be true, but certainly not in the majority of cases. .

RESPONSE: I agree it is probably true in some cases, but I think it is put forward as a disingenous argument. Ask Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson or Geraldine Ferraro how much they were helped by being black and/or female. Also, if it were brought up as a truly legitimate issue, why are not the corresponding issues of people who WON’T vote for a black or woman, and people who vote for McCain (substitue many other politicians) because he’s white and/or male.

The role of race and gender in the context of a presidential election is interesting. The role of people voting for Clinton or Obama because of race or gender is microscopic and intentionally leading the discussion in an unfair direction.

  43. Sandy Says:

    # 42 Lajet,
I agree with you, and your points.

I would have hoped the discussion would have went forward and talked to the point.
As to would people NOT vote for someone because they were Black, or a woman. Because I know full well that is also true.
i have had people say to me , that they would never vote for a woman to be president. both male & female.

Thank god for Lajet on this forum, on this topic!! Keep speaking up, Lajet!

I’m tired of Elisabeth’s fearmongering, hateful, propagandist comments being excused as either being (a) “just like everyone else in the media” or (b) “important because it makes us talk about race.”

When oh when will people wake up and stop excusing propagandists and insultingly ignorant people like EH as legitimate conveyors of informative debate? When?

  45. rainlillie Says:

    DeeDee ,

I must agree with you. TLB’s agenda isn’t to have an honest discussion about race and how we can unite as a people. Rather, it is to continue to cast doubt on the character of Senator Obama, by using the words of Rev. Wright.

She does it, in a very clever way. As soon as she leans in and props her chin up with her hand, you know the vile rhetoric is going to spew from her overly glossy lips.

I watched the clip and Sherri’s emotions were real and raw. TLB showed little concern for Sherri, she was more concerned about getting in the last word.

  46. BlondeBlogger Says:

Thank you, May, for the Starbucks info.

My political comment was simply because I see all these attacks on EH (which seems so nasty, tasteless and mean-spirited, regardless of your political position), and all of the comments seem to be left-leaning.

It would be nice to see some Republicans speaking up, but I’m wondering if they don’t feel welcome here.

Just my 2 cents, but as a Republican myself, when I see those personal attacks on EH, I feel less welcome to express my opinions as a Republican.

If the majority sees it as acceptable to get personal and mean-spirited, then I think anyone in the minority (as far as political opinions here) would shy away. I know I am (after this post, lol)

  47. annon Says:

Don’t confuse people disagreeing with someone’s opinion as a personal attack.

“If the majority sees it as acceptable to get personal and mean-spirited.”
    ———————————-
I don’t think the majority of the posters here have made personal attacks.

I read through this thread and I picked out one or two post that I would consider to be personal attacks. To say the “majority” is very dishonest.

  48. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: It would be nice to see some Republicans speaking up, but I’m wondering if they don’t feel welcome here.

They do speak up. Many of them don’t like her arguments, or the way she presents them. Frankly, I’ve, on occasion, supported EH’s arguments.

Come to think about it, you may be right — I don’t speak up on this forum as a Democrat, or Independent, or Liberatarian, or Republican. Truth be told, I have some beliefs that could fall into any one of those categories. People who are Republicans, right or wrong, left or right, may not feel comfortable here. I have found the discussions to be more about hte issues than the party position.

There are times people get unnecesarily personal with EH and I am particularly distressed, and often wince, when they attack her children (I don’t see what Tim has to do with much of anything, but at least he’s an adult). As far as I’m concerned, her children are off-limits, and I haven’t remained silent on that - I’ve tried to address that issue. The children haven’t done anything, and I for one would not like to have to face EH or her children some day and admit that I said what some people have said about her children. Some of them are just mean. I would encourage Winnie to delete any reference (the whole post if necessary) about the children.

  49. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST:My political comment was simply because I see all these attacks on EH (which seems so nasty, tasteless and mean-spirited, regardless of your political position), and all of the comments seem to be left-leaning.

RESPONSE: HOw do you feel about it when EH gets mean and tasteless?
-That’s a lie (Joy was actually correct, but htat’s irrelevant if we’re discussing nasty, and mean-spirited)
-so if Jeffrey Dahmer ate peanut-butter sandwiches is it not okay to eat PBS (or somethign like that, the logic was hard to follow and remember) (suggesting that is what other panelists were arguing when discussing Reverend Wright & Obama)
-you can’t be a good parent if you are an adulterer (while I don’t approve of adultery, that eliminates an awful lot of people, is fairly broad, doesn’t account for change or hear/forgiveness/redemption, and includes some of my very good, kind, bright (but temporarily stupid) friends.
-On the morning-after pill: “It’s the same thing as birthing a baby and leaving it out in the street!”
-When Rosie asked her if she (EH) thought she (RO) was a terrorist, she said “Defend your own insinuations” (my decoder ring says that’s a “yes”)

BTW, in trying to find more accurate quotes,I found a website that collects EHisms
    http://thinkexist.com/quotes/elisabeth_hasselbeck/

Wow, Rainlillie, what a vivid description! I love it.

  51. maryellen Says:

“Don’t confuse people disagreeing with someone’s opinion as a personal attack.”

It’s so crazy that you actually have to say this to an adult. But with so many right wingers these days, that is what you have to do. They reflexively call every criticism an “attack”. If they actually rebut the content of an issue (on this blog), I guess I haven’t seen it. I’ll have to read more frequently. I hope I’m proven wrong.

Any thoughts (anyone ??) about why right wingers tend to do this? Is it the result of watching too much Fox News instead of “real” news?

BlondeBlogger, Why not tell us what you disagree with? Also, as for Starbucks: One other warning (Whoopi brought up) is that they will sell you sweetened iced coffee (with around 200 calories in it) if you don’t tell them you want it unsweetened. Something people with diabetes should be aware of.

Andrea, I hope you don’t mean you aren’t going to comment here anymore. I’d like to read more of your posts.

  52. Dee Says:

“My political comment was simply because I see all these attacks on EH (which seems so nasty, tasteless and mean-spirited, regardless of your political position), and all of the comments seem to be left-leaning.”

I don’t think one has to “lean left” to expect better behavior and more compassion from EH. Yes, the comments about HER rudeness, tantrums, and bullying are discussed passionately on several sites. I can’t imagine notable Republican women like Georgette Mosbacher, Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins behaving this way or approving of her
behavior as a member of the party.

  53. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: Any thoughts (anyone ??) about why right wingers tend to do this? Is it the result of watching too much Fox News instead of “real” news?

RESPONSE: In fairness, I don’t think this is just a right-wing thing. I was very distressed when Air America came on that instead of providing thoughtful commentary, some of the programs were just left versions of Limbaugh and Michale Kraxxxx (can’t remember the last name) and several others. I suspect it’s more a human trait often exhibited when in fear, insecure, and/or a desire to control rather than a left or right thing.

  54. Sandy Says:

    Blonde blogger,
I can understand your apprehension. When I first stated reading here, and commenting, I was kind of leery myself. Not necessarily because I am a Republican, but I do have some conservative views and opinions. As well as I do happen to like Elisabeth.
That was awhile ago, and I have since learned that most of the commenters here are fair and may disagree with you, but for the most part are very civil.
I have personally found that many times we all agree on certain topics. Although not Elisabeth.
I personally wish you would come to comment, and join this blog. You sure sound like a very nice person. :)

  55. DeeDee Says:

#54/”Not necessarily because I am a Republican, but I do have some conservative views and opinions.”

Is there more than one Sandy who comments on this blog?

  56. Stephanie Says:

I think it would be nice to have another conservative voice on this blog too. I disagree with most positions on the ‘right’ so I would really like to know where some people are coming from

  57. Sandy Says:

    # 55 Dee Dee
I think I am the only Sandy. You seem to have a question about my comment. I’m not exactly sure what. I’ll be glad to answer anything I can though.
If it’s because I said, “not necessarily because I am a Republican, I said that because I don’t really consider myself to be a Republican. Although like I said, I do have some conservative views and opinions. As most Republicans do. I find I relate to some Republican ideals, but not “all”.
I have voted Republican for the most part, however I also have voted Democrat. (Bill Clinton- 92) I am registered as an Independent. I may vote democrat this time as well.
If I sound confusing, that’s because I am confused myself any more,…about politics. I don’t know what I am. I guess I prefer to vote for the person, not necessarily the party.

I have never been a very political person, Politics was last on my list of important things. That was up till about 4 or 5 years ago. i have learned more, read more, listened to more, political things in the last few years then I probably have in my entire life.

  58. maryellen Says:

Lajet (53), I was talking about regular people, as in the commenters, not Air America or other professional pundits or media. I was comparing the substance and detail (such as yours) given by people here and on similar blogs who objected to what EH says and how she says it with people who rebut with “oh you’re so mean and nasty toward Elisabeth”, etc.

  59. JoAnne Says:

Today’s episode reminded me of an episode of Will & Grace when a gay man and a Jewish woman were running for city counsil. Will wanted the gay guy and Grace wanted the Jew because that is who they most related to. Had nothing to do with their policies. When they found out that they didn’t agree with their policies, they decided to vote for someone else ( who incidently had something else they had connections to).
I usually don’t agree with EH on politics, but she does have a point with blacks voting for blacks, women voting for women. It’s who you can RELATE to. I think for some blacks, it means a change. A change for something they wanted for sooo long. A black man as president. I just hope they really know all his policies not his color. Same with Hillary. Being white and a woman, I just hope people are intelligent enough to make decisions based on what they will do with our country, not what record they will set as being the first woman or black president. Does that make sense? Maybe in the future we should have the candidates hidden behind curtains and then unveiled when they win!
I think I’m voting for Ross Perot! j/k
