The View April 29th Recap: Newt Gingrich

by Winnie McCarthy

newt-gingrich.jpgThe first 22 minutes of The View was preempted today by a President Bush news conference. When the show was joined already in progress, they were at the tail end of a conversation about binkies. That ended almost immediately and went to commercial. Anyone in Canada or in a different time zone not affected by the preemption, please post in the comments about what they talked about! Hopefully ABC will post the clips later today.

Newt Gingrich joined the ladies at the table when they came back from commercial. He has a book called Days of Infamy. Joy jokingly asked if the book was about the eight years of President Bush.

Gingrich thinks that Rev. Wright is deliberately trying to harm Barack Obama based on the things he said especially yesterday. He thinks that maybe Obama is no longer acceptable to Rev. Wright’s way of thinking how Black people should be and that being middle class is selling out. Whoopi said that is a stretch and doesn’t think he is trying to hurt Obama. She thinks that it is because Wright is not running for president that he is speaking out. Joy pointed out that John McCain said that he doesn’t believe that Obama shares beliefs with Wright. She asked why we can’t just put the issue to bed.

Sherri said that Wright laid low for awhile but had to come out to protect his church. Whoopi said that this has happened before with white preachers like Billy Graham. Newt said that Wright has a lot of personal pride and may feel that Obama is “dissing” him. Joy wants to know what has happened to free speech and Elisabeth said that we are having free speech by talking about it and saying the comments are not okay.

Joy asked Newt about comments he made about terrorists in which he brought up the names of Wright and Louis Farrakhan. He said that he should have talked about William Ayers who did plant bombs in the past. He said that the hard left has a “romantic desire” to believe in those people. Joy asked if there is a romance between the hard right and Saudi Arabia. He said that they don’t like Saudi Arabia. Joy pointed out that there is a photo of Donald Rumsfeld with Saddam Hussein. Newt said that was in 1983. Joy said that Ayers bombed in 1963. Elisabeth said that you can’t talk about the relationship between Rumsfeld and Hussein and not talk about the relationship between Obama and Wright.

Newt said that Hillary Clinton can get enough delegates to win. Newt said that Michigan has a primary in August and could add the presidential primary without cost to the voters.

Elisabeth had a small cameo part in Made of Honor and they showed a clip of it. In the film she hosts a video about how to be a great maid of honor, which star Patrick Dempsey watches ahead of his turn at the job for his best friend. Her role in the film explains why Elisabeth and Tim went to the premiere last night. She said that she was very nervous seeing her part of the movie and grabbed Tim so hard that she probably bruised him.

Sherri said that she has been going to eat Pinkberry a lot (twice a day) because it was healthy, but it was revealed that it is not as healthy as originally thought. She said that she can’t eat it anymore because of her diabetes. She hopes by saying this then she will be able to stop going. She admitted that she is an emotional eater. Elisabeth joked that they should put her face on a poster in the Pinkberry like a wanted poster.

I had “The View” on in the background, and it didn’t take more than 5 minutes before I couldn’t stand it - I turned to Becker. Much more enjoyable! It’s not just that EH continues to spew intolerance and ugly, it’s that the others don’t even use several good arguments they have to demonstrate how shallow she is. It’s a deadly combination. They (as in Whoopi & Joy) seem to be arguing with one side of their mouth filled with novacaine (okay - trying to think of an analogy like “one hand tied behind your back” only using an aural analogy. Not sure it worked so well.:~ - while EH argues on steroids (figuratively only, I’m sure she doesn’t use steroids.)

I’m back to my “what if they gave “A View” and no one came” (the “no one” could be all the panelists - except EH undoubtedly - or the audience. I don’t care which. I’ve given up hope of seeing the train wreck. Doesn’t appear it’s going to happen.

  2. May Says:

After seeing Newt on and EH practically holding his hand with giddiness, thought I’d seen it all till the clip of EH in the movie appeared. She then said she’d better keep her “day job”..looked at Bawa saying “if that’s o.k.” That statement makes me think there is NO chance the twit will ever be leaving (tho Bawa didn’t seem to give much of an approving o.k.)When Joy said something about freedom of speech, EH looked at the camera and spouted in her most irritated way “that’s why we’re here talking (about Rev Wright)..FREE SPEECH!” She most always has to shout and act angry at everyone when they don’t think her way. Sherri has a more calming effect when expressing her opinions, though I may disagree with some of them, she doesn’t overreact as EH does.

  3. Jilly Says:

It is so aggravating that Joy & Whoopi just let EH get away with the interrupting and ridiculous comments, stand up for yourselves and tell her to SHUT UP! I can respect an intelligent exchange of opposing views but EH is like a child having a tantrum. I think at one point BW told her to stop interrupting (maybe that is just wishful thinking).

Not sure how much more I can take.

  4. Kelly Says:

So, was there anything interesting said about Elisabeth’s week-end? They kind of built it up on Monday, and I thought she was gonna have some major announcement. Do you think it was just about the movie opening?

  5. Sarah Says:

If EH had even an ounce of self awareness she would be embarrassed that she has to be coddled so much by the real grown ups on the show. But then what am I saying, if she had self awareness the coddling wouldn’t even be necessary in the first place.

And I better stop my rant now because I’m so irritated that I’m reaching the point where I’m about to rant in all caps.

  6. Stephanie Says:

Winnie, the first 5 minutes they talked about how a child was taken away from his father b/c he gave him “hard lemonade” at a baseball game.
Then they talked about dancing with the stars and how Christian de la fuente hurt his arm while dancing. Sherri described him as spanish and from “spanish” cause she didnt know where exactly he’s from. Sherri also said she really wants to be on the show but Whoopi said ‘the View’ probably said no cause she wont be in new york. Also Paula Abdul wants to be on the show but people say she has too much dance experience.

  7. Stephanie Says:

After the break BW said she went to the dmv to get a non-driving drivers license. Nobody asked for her autograph and she told Bill Geddie she was so happy about being anonymous. BG told her its cause nobody knew it was her…it was dumb I dont even know what the point was. Then they talked about binkys. So basically Winnie, you didnt miss anything important :)

  8. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Thanks, Stephanie. Was there any mention of whatever thing Elisabeth was going to talk about yesterday, but was saving for today?

  9. Sandy Says:

I did watch the show today, and am in the same time zone as Winnie.
so thanks Stephanie for filling us in.

One reason I have never been very interested in politics is that everything has to be analyzed and reanalyzed and scrutinised and picked apart. It’s enough that I don’t want to hear about any politics or politicians for awhile.

  10. Stephanie Says:

    No problem Winnie and Sandy!
I assumed the news about EH from yesterday was her cameo in ‘made of honor’. I could be wrong but there wasnt anything else that really stood out about her.

  11. ShannonP Says:

Today when Sherri was talking about her Pinkberry addiction and how she found out it’s not healthy for her…Whoopi cuts in with how she’ll bring her some healthy yogurt because “you know I don’t play”.
Whoopi is always acting like she’s a health junkie, but I’m not seeing it. One, you don’t smoke if you are into good health. And two, I just get the impression she is a closet eater. She goes overboard trying to get the opinion out there that she doesn’t have a problem with food, almost like she’s covering up the fact that she does.
I’d also like her to stop treating Sherri like Sherri doesn’t have a brain and that she (Whoopi) has to tell her the right way to do everything. She does that all the time. She did it yesterday when Sherri was talking about her husband and going for that walk. Sherri was just telling about her weekend and Whoopi steps in like the all-knowing on how Sherri should be with the guy.
Whoopi and EH seem to be competing for the title of “I’m always right”

  12. new2view Says:

Whoppi may sometimes seem like she is sharing her life learnings, but it is because she has them to share. EH should lose her day job, move on to mindless cameos on mindless movies or other dribble. I want her out of my view and out of the spotlight where someone might watch her and think that it is acceptable to interrupt, shout over others and apply absurd logic to support her clearly unanalyzed adoration of anything Republican. She must go. I’m embarrassed to watch her behavior and see how the others are forced to keep quiet. Is it because they can’t find anyone else with a Republican mindset that will sit at the table with non-Republicans and talk about issues in a logical and civil manner? That’s how it looks from my view.

  14. Michael Says:

Found this board trying to google a clip of Babs being surprised she could get an ID card from the DMV. Never even had a drivers license.

How out of touch is she with us common folk?

Is this what the right calls the liberal elite?

  15. BostonMel Says:

Uggh, now I really won’t be seeing Made of Honor. EH is appalling. Go away and just raise your kids, Elis..the majority of the VIEWing public and people that work w/ you cannot STAND you. I’ll respect you more when you realize you suck @ the View and leave w/ the tiny bit of dignity that you have.

  16. NewYorkerNancy Says:

    #14:
“Is this what the right calls the liberal elite?”

No, Michale, It’s called a New Yorker. Many of us New Yorkers don’t have a driver’s license. Many of us ride the subway and the bus, walk, or ride a bike. It is very very expensive to keep a car in the city; I’m sure insurance is out of sight too.

  17. blu Says:

Has anyone seen Kathie Lee on the Today show at 10AM Kathie Lee and her co host have a fabulous interaction on the day’s current events and it is ust like the “view” used to be before they got into this battle on who has more “talking time then the other. and if I don’t get my time I’ll just keep on tqlking over the other hosts!”

Check it out and I think you will love it. It is so much better than the has been ”
    view”

  18. marilyn Says:

    # 16 blu

I sooooooooooooooo agree with you about Kathie Lee and her co-host. They have all the right chemistry with each other. They are two ladies that have it all together. I felt the same as you, when I first started watching them.

  19. Kathleen Says:

I agree that EH is really out of line. I would really love to hear what the other ladies are saying but her continuous rant and rude talking over others with the rabid republican nonsense is turning me off from wanting to listen about binkys and baby’s pee pee stories. I enjoy the other ladies sense of fun and humor but it is always kill joyed by the temper tantrems.

    RE: Rev. Wright and EH.

EH attended my Catholic high school (Bay View Academy) and my husband’s alma mater Boston College. Now her church and her spiritual leader was Cardinal Bernard Law and he was responsible for allowing pedophiles to continue to perform as priests in her church. What does this make EH?

It would be nice to have an intelligent female republican who had genuine ideas to share but EH isn’t it. She’s too full of herself. Wardrobe needs to get a hold of her and teach her how to dress. Enough of the boobs, birthday cake dresses and Shirley Temple hairdos.

Time for BW to show EH the Bye-Bye View!

  20. misslingdow Says:

I don’t think that Rev. Wright is delibertly trying to hurt Obama, he is just trying to milk his 15 min of fame. He is being selfish, not thinking about the negative impact it is having on Obama. Like Rosie said fame can be addictive and I think he is hooked! Unfortunately, people like Hannity, Bill O’riely and the Nit EH feed off of this and now they have garbage to hurl at Obama and create fear.

  21. maryellen Says:

    #11/ShannonP:
“Whoopi is always acting like she’s a health junkie, but I’m not seeing it. One, you don’t smoke if you are into good health.”

I’ve never heard Whoopi act like that. I’ve heard her mention eating too many chips sometimes.

I know people who simply hate talking about healthy food, diets, weight, etc. That doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy, or are not confronting their problems. Maybe they just think talking about it is a bore. Whoopi kind of strikes me that way.

I also know many people who are successful at maintaining a healthy lifestyle in some ways, like diet (most of the time) and exercise but do have a cocktail and cigarette (sometimes just one, sometimes too many). I used to know runners in the 1980s who were smokers (not while running!). I know people who have tackled excess weight successfully but could not give up cigarettes altogether, or at all. At least they got the weight off. Maybe the cigs will be another time.

Not everyone is able to be 100% consistent, they do the best they can; you don’t throw someone’s efforts and achievements at good health out with the bathwater just because they have areas they are “weak” in. It’s not an all or nothing kind of deal for some people. In fact, it’s the al-or-nothng attitude that IMO gets some people in trouble; they fall off one wagon and then fall off all the others.

  22. MikeO Says:

    Thank God for EH!
I’m happy that there is at least one conservative (and at times more sensible) view on this show.
Someone has to be there to counter Joy’s liberal rants and constant spouting of Democratic talking points (like the totally misinterpreted ‘John McCain wants to keep us in Iraq for 100 years!’ and ‘McCain will just be a third Bush term.’)
As for EH’s ‘dominating’ the conversation? Give me a break!
She has to fight to get a word in edgewise with the 2.5 women(Sherri’s the .5 since she doesn’t get too political)on the other side of the political spectrum.

  23. May Says:

Today’s show was different with everyone coming down the red carpet and the announcing of nominations for Emmys. The View is up for one and the hosts are up for another catagory. Good for them! How many emmys have they won over the years as best hosts? Anybody know? Of course EH had to show off again in front of some of the tv people when she went off again on Rev Wright. Her face gets so ugly when she rants and carries on like a dingbat! Naturally she couln’t let the editor from “People” mag say his peace without interrupting! Gagging as I’m writing just remembering her silly crud this am.

  24. Sarah Says:

“Someone has to be there to counter Joy’s liberal rants and constant spouting of Democratic talking points”

EH is the one who spouts talking points which she in no way can back up or elaborate on. Talking in circles while saying nothing of relevance does not qualify as a sensible voice to me. I don’t agree with everything that Joy says, but at least she can explain why she feels the way she does. I can’t say the same for Elisabeth. Elisabeth comes across as a person who hasn’t formed her own opinions, but instead has had them spoon fed to her.

“As for EH’s ‘dominating’ the conversation? Give me a break!
She has to fight to get a word in edgewise”
I’ve actually timed before the amount of time that EH takes up with her rambling (that incidentally never seems to lead anywhere) and the amount of time that they other panelists talk, and EH sucks up the majority of the airtime with her pointless rambling (with the exception of course of the days when Barbara is on, and then she is the one who takes up the most time with pointless rambling). EH just isn’t a team player.

  25. shelley Says:

“McCain will be just a third Bush term” isn’t something that’s been “misinterpreted.” It’s an opinion based on McCain’s agreement with Bush on big things like the war in Iraq and his flip flopping to agree with Bush on other issues like torture and tax cuts for the wealthy.

I agree the catchy phrase is used as short-hand by people who don’t support Bush or McCain, but that doesn’t mean the content behind the catch-phrase isn’t accurate.

Sarah, that’s funny you’ve timed EH. I’m not surprised at the outcome. And lately she has been reprising her role with Rosie from last May.

If Whoopi hasn’t yet kicked the ciggie habit, I can’t really blame her. I wouldn’t blame her if her View mug had something stronger than coffee in it either.

Jilly, newtoview, BostonMel,blu, Kathleen, I enjoyed your comments and hope you post more often.

    LMBO!!!! :-D

  27. Kathleen Says:

I agree that Joy does explain and support her views and I think that Whoopi and Sherry do also. It is just EH ranting in circles with the face of a furious turtle and even the interesting guests who you would like to hear what they have to say can not get a word in edgewise with the little gas bag.

When BW is on she is more fawning towards BW.

Enough about Rev. Wright!!!! Who cares about him? It should not be brought up again. The views have been expressed and then some.
