The View December 10th Recap: Dana Delany, Lorriane Bracco and Boyz II Men

by Winnie McCarthy

dana-delany.jpgDana Delany from Desperate Housewives sat in as guest host on The View today. On Desperate Housewives, they just had a tornado and everyone is wondering who died. She revealed that three people died on the show. The show has been on hiatus because of the writer’s strike. She almost did not come on the show because two writers asked her not to go on The View. Marc Cherry, head writer, told her to go on the show, even though The View has two writers on strike.

The first topic was Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People” special. Whoopi Goldberg said that it did better in that time slot for ABC than any other show this season.

Joy Behar said that Al Gore still sounds angry about his loss in the election seven years ago, based on comment in his Nobel Prize speech.

The Republicans went to Florida to do a debate for Spanish language television. Whoopi said that they did not have a strong stance on immigration and no one mentioned building a wall. Sherri said that maybe the candidates thought that they were not not going to vote for them anyway. Whoopi said that maybe people would feel better if they built the wall around the whole country, including Canada. Joy said that having only a southern wall makes it seem like it is just against Mexicans and not trying to prevent terrorism.

Sherri Shepherd thought that Mitt Romney did not go far enough in his speech to explain Mormonism. Dana said that it should not matter what religion he is because of the separation of church and state. Joy thought that his underlying sentiment was that there is not enough church in the state. Dana said that was to pander to the Christian right. She said that you should just look to Mitt’s actions, such as he is a family man. Dana also thinks that people get more conservative as they get older, which can explain a candidate’s change from being pro choice to being pro life. Joy said that only happens with men, but Dana said that she is more conservative about sex as she has gotten older.

Rudy Giuliani said that the NYPD launched a tax payer funded chauffeur service for his then girlfriend because she was receiving death threats. Dana suggested that he did that so his wife would not see the charges on his credit card statement. Sherri thinks that it shows how he could be as a president: sneaky and unable to handle a commitment.

Dana has never been married and had never wanted to be married, but now, after having a lifetime of adventures, she might be ready to get married. Sherri held up a copy of More magazine, in which Dana appeared on the cover, and said that she cannot believe that Dana is not married, because she is so beautiful. Joy said that not only beautiful people get married, because how else could you explain all of the ugly children in the world? Dana said that she likes her freedom is not interested in having children. Joy said that it is harder to get married older because you have to share after having everything to yourself.

Is hope an obstacle to emotional recovery? Dana said that she has studied Buddhism and they teach that happiness is being in the present. If you are focusing on hope, you are not appreciating the right now. Sherri said that with her son Jeffrey being born premature, his doctors told her that he will be severely mentally retarded and have cerebral palsy. She has always held out hope that maybe he won’t and that he will be fine. She said that the hope keeps her going. Dana said that it is important to have faith in yourself, which is different than hope, and that will see you through. Whoopi said that all of those things are important to keep people moving. She mentioned that there is a man who had his wife taken off life support, but then she woke up the next day and started talking.

Actress Lorriane Bracco appeared on the show to promote her new ABC Family television movie called Snow Globe. The movie is about a meddling mother. She gave advice to Dana “Children are fabulous, but marriage blows.” Lorraine misses being on The Sopranos, but is sick of people telling her that they did not like the ending or that they don’t have anything to watch on Sundays anymore.

She said that she misses the steady paycheck of the show, but is happy she got Snow Globe, which she made for her future, potential grandchildren. She really wants grandchildren so she can spoil them and then send them back home. She said that she really wants her children to be happy, no matter what they want to do. One of her daughters is at the Wharton Business School and the other is an actress.

Lorraine said that she is stressed out about Christmas because her daughters each want a special dish. Joy told her to have it catered and Lorraine was appalled at the thought. She sells wine that she imports under the name Bracco Wines.

They announced more winners in the Dodge Caravan caroling contest. The one winning song that they had performed on the show included a rap segment. The young couple (22 yrs old; married 5 months) said that they will be using the van to do community work, as they are both studying to be counselors. (I guess it is good I didn’t try to win, because I would have looked lame saying I would use the van to make trips to Costco and to stock up on cat food).

Boyz II Men also appeared on the show, causing me to have a tremendous wave of nostalgia wash over me. (My sister had a teddy bear that sang a Boyz II Men song. I wonder whatever happened to that?) They performed a Motown medley off their album Motown:A Journey Through Hitsville, U.S.A. They wanted to bring good music back to the people and they feel good about the album. They worked with Patti LaBelle and it was difficult telling her in the studio that she would have to re-sing part of the song because she is such a legend.

Although there were originally four members, Michael McCary (the one with the cane and the low voice) is no longer with the group because of health problems stemming from scoliosis. As a result, the group is a trio of Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Nathan Morris. Michael is now trying his hand at acting.

Nathan said that is important to keep music in the schools and Shawn said that young people that want to make it in the music business have to realize that they got where they are because they practiced everyday.

  1. rainlillie Says:

Did Sherri say something that was bleeped out? Because I have digital cable, I wasn’t sure if it was just my service. I don’t think religion should be a factor when picking a president. I agree you should just go by their actions. We’ve have some who have claimed to be really religious and have behaved in ways to may you think otherwise.
Dana looks just like my sister in-law. Rudy should have paid out of his own pocket to protect his mistress. Maybe his wife was making the threats against the girlfriend…Just kidding. Besides that his wife is a class act.
How could the mistress have received threats during the time he claimed she received them, when the affair was a secret? He’s way too shady IMO.

  2. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Rainlillie: I thought that it was MY cable, but if you experienced it, too, it must have been bleeped out. My TiVo didn’t record today’s episode, so I wasn’t able to go back and rewind it. Anyone know what was said?

  3. rainlillie Says:

Thanks Winnie. I’m very curious as to what she said. I believe it was during the discussion about immigration and the GOP candidates.

  4. Rachel Says:

I don’t have cable, and in Canada, the View airs on CTV; and a number of bits at the beginning were bleeped too, so it must have been the show.

  5. Aileen Says:

It bleeped out on mine too.. unfortunately, I only was able to record the first 11 mins then my electric went out.. sheeesh. I couldnt even figure out what they were saying.

  6. rainlillie Says:

The other ladies didn’t react in a way like Sherri said something funny or vulgar, so maybe it was a technical issue with the show. It seems to me that the audience is nonresponsive during the hot topics. The only time I heard the audience cheer was during the giveaway.

  7. Aileen Says:

Again, I am wondering why Sherry needs Mitt to explain his religion to her when she can investigate it herself, but it almost appears that she means to have him explain how his religion would if any impact the presidency if he is elected. She needs to be clear on what she is asking.

Dana Delaney has me quite perplexed on her stance on politics. She sounded as if she was supporting Mitt and made a statement that him being a family man makes him a good person? Well she has never been married or have children, so what does that make her?? Ooh and I dont get her conservative views. SHe has shown more flesh in her old movies and I am sure she has had plenty of rolling in the hay outside of marriage… and now she has an issue with sex as a conservative?? Thats like Sherry promoting abstinence until your married which she never did herself. More of the ‘as I get older I am forgetting what it was like to be young and am getting narrow minded cause I am drying up.’ sheesh. I would be heart broken if Gloria Steinem fell into the same rut and was suddenly pro-life, submissive and put on an apron.

  8. marilyn Says:

    To rainlillie and Winnie-

I turned on my TV at 11:30 am EST. I planned to catch up on the first half of the show,by using the rewind on my TiVo. I HAD NO SOUND ! I had all picture and no sound. VERY FRUSTRATING.
Then, I came to this blog and the both of you were saying something was wrong with your programs, too.
Now I wonder if something was wrong from the network and it messed up my TiVo. Did you have sound throughout the show?

Winnie, Are you saying that your recorder malfunctioned or you forgot to preprogram the show?
Sorry I can not answer your “bleeping” questions. I can look at the closed captions, but I would not know if they bleeped.

  9. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Marilyn: I watch it live on the TV with no TiVo and then go check the recording if I missed something. I had sound throughout on the live broadcast, except for during that one discussion.

Unfortunately my TiVo had not been connected to the network lately and didn’t have any updated programming info, that’s why it didn’t record. (my own fault :)

  10. Aileen Says:

Winnie, Tivo so frustrates me since I needed to dial in since the wirelss i attached to it no longer worked with my router. Since then, I got cable DVR and omg.. its the bomb!!! It took me forever to make the change since I hate change.. but its cheaper.. and easier and no tivo issues. I had too many tivo issues to list. Check out your cable provider and see what they have for DVR, you will have to exchange your cable box for it. Its much easier and already built into the cable box so less one device as well.

  11. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Aileen: I will think about it, but I don’t like change either. :)

  12. marilyn Says:

    Winnie and Aileen-

I mis-spoke myself, in regard to having TiVo. I have the digial cable DVR.

  13. rainlillie Says:

“watch it live on the TV with no TiVo and then go check the recording if I missed something. I had sound throughout on the live broadcast, except for during that one discussion.”

Yes, that’s what happened to me. I have a DVR, but I didn’t try to rewind, I just assumed it was bleeped.

  14. rainlillie Says:

I also like the DVR it’s really hassle free …Most of the time. Even my 9 year old knows how to record with it. I also like the fact that you can block shows based on their MPAA ratings.

  15. Stacee Says:

    Mine was bleeped out too.
It was during the immigration discussion, where they said the repubs did not talk about it. Sherri said something like “Did you really think they would bring that up?” Whoopi said she did.
Then Whoopi said “I thought there would be one ______(bleeped)”.
Then Sherri said “They were for m_____ ….
    ___ talking about that wall”

    ???

It was a little hard to follow too, since there was some crosstalk. Usually you can read lips but the camera kept panning to and away. Wierd.

Today’s show was good though. It was pretty lively. I enjoyed the discussion. I also thought Dana was a pretty good guest co-host.

Boys II Men’s performance was great!

  16. rainlillie Says:

    Stacee,
Thanks for providing more info on the mystery bleep. I also enjoyed Boys II Men.

  17. Stacee Says:

    Spelling correction: Weird

    rain, you’re welcome!

  18. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Thanks, Stacee. I don’t like how they pan away AND bleep something out. They have done this on previous episodes. I have gotten pretty good at lip reading and always like to try to figure out what was said.

  19. Sandy Says:

I didn’t get to see the show, and i usually never record it..I usually never get the chance to go back and watch it.

Sounds like it was an interesting show though.

I too don’t believe that religion should be a factor in choosing a president.
At the same time I don’t think a president’s religion should matter. I don’t feel that religion belongs in politics.

I do think that there is some credence in some tend to get more conservative as they get older. Especially if you have children.

  20. megan Says:

hello…I’m a new reader to the blog and was curious about the bleeped stuff too! After reviewing it, I’m pretty sure it was just Whoopi who was bleeped (I think Sherri just kept saying she ‘didn’t think for a minute’ that they were going to discuss that stuff). Whoopi was saying something with a ‘k’ sound at the beginning I think, but that’s all I got!

  21. rainlillie Says:

I’m sure someone will get down to the bottom of the mystery bleep. If anyone can do it, New Linda can, since she found out about the Huckabee rapist story.
Sandy, my mother is a southern baptist and she’s 62 years old. She has had mainly liberal views all of her life.

Thanks Megan, for telling us a little more about the bleep. Now I’m wondering “what stuff” Sherri was talking about discussing.

  22. Aileen Says:

I love Boys 2 Men.. but did anyone get a Las Vegas night lounge vibe to the first performance??? even the quick thank you very much as soon as the first song was over.. the dance steps looked so 1970’s as well… Im just saying…….

  23. rainlillie Says:

    Aileen,
LOL! They were paying homage to the Four Tops. That was a dance the Tops were famous for. Also the two song they performed were Tops songs.

  24. Rachel Says:

I too enjoyed the show today. Although there were only two HT segments, I thought the choices of discussion -especially in the first segment- were better than usual, and they actually stuck to politics for a whole 10 minutes! Amazing! Go View!
(Then again, Babs was absent, maybe that’s why).
Also enjoyed Dana Delany, she contributed a fair bit to the discussion.

“I don’t feel that religion belongs in politics.”
Sandy, I could not agree more with you. I’ll even stretch further and say, nor in education. Basically, church and state should be strictly separated, and I think blurring the line between the two is extremely dangerous.
But I’ve gone on a rant about that previously, so I’ll stop now. This is, obviously only my own opinion.

“I do think that there is some credence in some tend to get more conservative as they get older.”
Another statement from Sandy that I agree with also.
I wouldn’t personally use the term: “conservative”, simply because it SOOO doesn’t reflect the person I am, so in my case, “old-fashioned” would be more accurate. Or maybe I just misunderstood what Dana meant, when she said that as she got older, she became more conservative towards sex. But according to my own experience, I have indeed become more old-fashioned towards sex too, not that I’ve turned into a prudish old fart or anything. I’ve had pretty long periods of time throughout my life when I’ve been single, and here I am, single again, dammit. And previously, when, I was single, I used to think less and act up more on my impulses and my crushes, and now that I’m a wise old bag, I intellectualize a lot more; when I meet a guy I like (which happens much less nowadays, because I am much pickier and my standards have changed and, I’d like to think, are much higher), I am a lot more cautious than I used to be, I ask myself all kinds of questions about my feelings, and I put said guy under the microscope and analyze the way he acts and the way he talks to me, and the things he tells me, and that probably makes me a pain in the butt and possibly explains why I am single…! But anyway, this is how I understood her statement.
As for going from pro-choice to pro-life, I think that is an entirely different issue. My views on sex may have changed and be more rigid now that they were when I was in my early 20s, however, my views on abortion have not wavered one bit, I doubt they will, and I really hope they don’t.

As for Boys II Men, I think this is the first time I actually show interest in a musical performance on the View, which kinda surprised me since I’m not a boys’ band type of girl at all. Well, actually I am, but my type of boys bands are usually surrounded by a wall of amps, sport tattoos and hair down to their butts as well as an unconditional love for distortion.
But I enjoyed them a lot; then again, I’m a complete sucker for old-school Motown, (I’ve had the chance and honour to see the Four Tops live at the Jazz festival, and I was totally wowed) so that might explain it. Still, not everyone can pull off a good Motown medley, and they totally did, so good job, Boys!

  25. megan Says:

rainlillie, i think she was saying that she didn’t think they would discuss immigration at that debate. that was just bad paraphrasing by me. ;)

huckabee rapist story? wow….i’d never heard about that. :O

  26. megan Says:

just found it…i went back to read some old recaps and saw all the comments posted about the huckabee thing. i think i’ll just add one word to the discussion: ugh.

anyway, i’m glad i found this blog! i like watching the view but i also like hearing what other people think about the stuff they talk about!

  27. rainlillie Says:

“rainlillie, i think she was saying that she didn’t think they would discuss immigration at that debate. that was just bad paraphrasing by me. ;)”

Oh that’s okay, I understand. Yes the rapist story is pretty gross. I’m glad that people exchange and share info on this site.

  28. Sasha Says:

LOL! I so agree. Boys 2 Men, not really my bag, but they did well. I think they all have a very nice quality to their voices. Now let’s see BW’s face if Tool played… :)
(I’m laughing just thinking about it.)

  29. Stacee Says:

    Sandy Says:
“I do think that there is some credence in some tend to get more conservative as they
get older. Especially if you have children.”

I agree, at least that was my experience.
Certain views of mine have changed as I have gotten older.
I also agree with Aileen in that I don’t know if I would categorize it as conservative but rather ‘old fashioned’.

  30. Aileen Says:

Rain thats so funny.. i didnt now they were doing the 4 tops homage.. I think I just got the electric back on at that time. But you have to agree.. its was very Billy Murray on SNL singing on the stage (ish).. Lmaooo

  31. Aileen Says:

oh incase your wondering… i did pay the bill.. must of been an accident that knocked off the whole neighborhood. :-)

  32. rainlillie Says:

    Aileen,
You mean Bill’s character on SNL the lounge singer LOL!
I like the old Motown sound. My mother introduced us to all kinds of music. From country to jazz.

  33. New Linda Says:

I watched the clip on the abc site and it seems odd that the technical difficulties only happened when Sherri was talking.

  34. rainlillie Says:

I thought it was odd too. Is it possible that TPTB censored something that was said about a GOP candidate? If you watch the clip, the ladies are unaware that there was a “technical problem.”

  35. New Linda Says:

I think the censors have their hands over the censor to bleep out Sherri’s “earth is flat” and “nothing predates christianity” moments just got carried away today Oh, I kid you Sherri lovers out there. :-)

    Aileen,
I agree that Sherri should research the Mormon religion on her own. That said, knowing about a religion is not the same as understanding someone’s personal relationship with God.

I for one do care if a candidate’s relationship with God will interfere with secularism.

I wish Sherri would do her own research because I would love to hear what she has to say about Mormon underwear.

  36. New Linda Says:

boy, i must be tired. my post has lots of typos. the only one i will clear up is that it’s important to me that a candidates relationship with God WILL NOT interefere with secularism.

  37. msroncon Says:

i was very unhappy with the show today. I do not like Dana Delaney, and thought it was funny that Sherri was just starting to comment on something she said and Whoopie gave her the eye, like DON’T. Of course Barbara won in her slot. Writer’s strike!!!

  38. Aileen Says:

    New Linda

“I wish Sherri would do her own research because I would love to hear what she has to say about Mormon underwear.”

omg.. u slay me!!!! Are you suggesting that mormons underwear is well.. er .. um.. ready for the packing???? if so.. i gotta date a mormon… :-)

  39. rainlillie Says:

Okay, You guys made me curious about the underwear. I found this pic online.
    http://xmo.lege.net/packham/garment.jpg

  40. rainlillie Says:

“I for one do care if a candidate’s relationship with God will interfere with secularism.”

    I agree.

  41. Aileen Says:

update to Huckabee.. more info on Huckabee receiving 8 letters from victims prior to the boneheaded release of the turd from prison.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/10/new-documents-revealed-in_n_76186.html

THis is not about candidates making poor decisions while in office, but now primarily about presidential candidates who have made decisions in regards to public safety where he chose to ignore all the warning to chose political gain/purposes. In a nut shell, he put political gain in front of womans public safety and that turd should back out of the race.

  42. rainlillie Says:

    Aileen,
I heard on a radio program that the anti Clinton folks really pushed Hukabee to release the rapist. They thought that Clinton made sure he got a harsh sentence, because the victim was a distance cousin of Clinton’s.

  43. Rachel Says:

    “Now let’s see BW’s face if Tool played… :)
(I’m laughing just thinking about it.)”

    LOL, Sasha!!

Hey, we can always hope that when Guns’n'Roses make their big comeback (circa 2020), they’ll swing by the View!
I can totally imagine the ladies all draped on the piano, while a high-as-a-kite Axl Rose screeches “Welcome to the jungle!”

  44. Sasha Says:

“I can totally imagine the ladies all draped on the piano, while a high-as-a-kite Axl Rose screeches “Welcome to the jungle!”

Priceless, right? I’d pay GOOD money to see it… :)

  45. Stacee Says:

I saw this post on the other site and it sums up perfectly how I feel about Sherri and her supposedly wanting to know more about Mitts religion:

“Ugh, I want to slap that twit whenever she gets all bug eyed and waves her arms about. b****, if religion is really as important as you claim it is then why the hell are you waiting for someone else to explain it to you? It’s not Romney that has a problem with Mormonism. Take a cab to your local LDS church or at the very least ask someone to show you how to operate a computer. She only works for maybe three hours a day so time is not an obstacle.”

I also want to say that I agree that religion (or someones relationship with their God) has no place in politics.

  46. Sandy Says:

    Rachel, Stacee, ..and others,
I agree, by, conservative, I didn’t necessarily mean politically,..I was referring to many things in life.

  47. rainlillie Says:

I also feel that the presidential candidates religious affiliation should be irrelevant. We should look at the persons voting record and other things that they’ve done while in public office.

  48. Peaches Says:

I’ve heard my whole life that most people become more conservative as they get older. That has never, ever made sense to me. I think many people who say this are confusing personal behavior with political ideology…. They think that because most of us probably do have more conservative social lives the older we get (and that would be me), that means we are going to start voting conservatively. That couldn’t be further from the truth, for me. I am very much the liberal/progressive politically as I was as a teenager. And even if I were to have started leaning more rightward politically, this latest bunch on the right, the Bush-Rove-right-wing media crowd, would have sent me reeling back to the left anyway. The wedge issues they cooked up and cultivated just to try to get a permanent Republican majority make me physically ill: discriminating against gays, trampling on women’s reproductive choices (not just abortion but birth control), calling their fellow Americans traitors and haters just because we oppose or even question Bush’s reckless, dangerous foreign policy. No, I can’t imagine for even a nanosecond suiting up with the right side of the aisle and voting with them, no matter how old I get. And even if I believed in their ideology (which is unimaginable), I wouldn’t trust them to run things competently or honestly. I never would have dreamed that Republicans could be so negligent about war, or would cowardly turn a blind eye toward the idiotic, dangerous decisions that have been made by the leader that they voted for not once but twice.

  49. rainlillie Says:

    Great points Peaches!
“I never would have dreamed that Republicans could be so negligent about war, or would cowardly turn a blind eye toward the idiotic, dangerous decisions that have been made by the leader that they voted for not once but twice.”

It’s just unbelievable. This corrupt administration as exceeded all of my expectations when it comes to their ability to fail. Now some legal experts think that some of the cases against convicted terrorists may be thrown out.

  50. Stacee Says:

    Peaches Says:
“I think many people who say this are confusing personal behavior with political ideology…. They think that because most of us probably do have more conservative social lives the older we get (and that would be me), that means we are going to start voting conservatively. That couldn’t be further from the truth, for me.”

    Totally agree.
And thanks for making the distinction because that describes me. Even though some of my views for MY life has changed, my voting has not (nor do I suspect it will).
