The View December 13th Recap: Megan Mullally and Greta van Susteren
Today on The View, Barbara Walters revealed that after her “rant” about the Jamaican embassy, she heard from everyone there that she had left messages for at the embassy. Barbara said that everyone needs their own show to solve their problems.
Barbara showed off some Christmas cards that she has received, including one from the White House. It is a religious card, which included a quote from the Bible, Nehemiah 9:6. She wondered if they sent the same card to everyone, even if they are atheists or non-Christian? Whoopi said that maybe the quote “You are the Lord” was meant only for Barbara. Joy said that maybe he is just telling everyone that he is religious and because it is the last Christmas, it doesn’t matter anymore.
She also received a card from Prince Charles and Camilla. Joy said that she read in the Enquirer that they were getting a divorce. Barbara also got a card from Elton John and Whoopi said that she got one, too. Barbara also received a card from the king and queen of Jordan. It showed a picture of them and their children, dressed casually in blue jeans. Finally she showed a card from Elisabeth which had pictures of her two children. Whoopi said that she got the card, but didn’t get a chance to look inside and she wondered, “Who are these white kids?”
Joy showed off a couple of cards that she made to send out. One showed Joy sitting on Santa’s lap, with her tongue out, which said “Lick an Old Man for Christmas.” Another card said “Happy Holidays to you and all of your ancestors,” which showed a picture of Joy with a chimpanzee. She said that there was a third card, but it was too X-rated to show.
Barbara complained that she has too many Christmas lunches to go to and she wished that they would move them to January. Whoopi said that she doesn’t sent cards, but will call people on Christmas. Sherri says that she sends New Year’s cards, which include a prayer that each person has a blessed year.
Ike Turner died. Barbara pointed out that people consider him more as a wife abuser (of Tina Turner) than a rock and roll legend. Joy said that you have to separate his work from what he has done in order to acknowledge his good work, but that you can never erase what he has done. Sherri said that in his book he admitted he hit Tina, but said that “hitting is not the same as beating.”
The Associated Press reported what kind of coffee the presidential candidates like to drink. While the topic itself was rather dull, it was funny because they were insinuating it related to their preferences in other areas. For example, Rudy Giuliani likes “whichever (sweetener) is available.” Whoopi also made a joke about Bill Clinton liking it Black. Joy asked what she meant and Whoopi said it was “a sister thing.” Joy whined that she should not leave her out of “sister” things. Sherri said that she does not drink coffee and Barbara asked if it was for religious reasons. Sherri said, “When did the Lord say you can’t drink coffee?” Whoopi joked that the Lord said that you can’t be stimulated.
Whoopi wanted to know whether Barack Obama would be electable if he had married a white woman? Barbara thought it would possibly offend both Blacks and whites. Whoopi said that partly she thinks that people would take awhile to get over it, but then they would deal with it, but also thinks that maybe the country could not handle it. Joy thinks that it may trigger the fear in the old South of a Black woman raping a white woman. Sherri thinks that it might be a distraction because Blacks might be wondering why he did not marry a Black woman.
A contractor working on a woman’s home found $182,000 in the wall. He thinks it is his because “finder’s keepers” and now he is going to court with her over it. Originally he only wanted a 10% finder’s fee, but then upped it to 40%. Joy wondered if he should be rewarded for not stealing it in the first place. Sherri said that they should split it equally. Whoopi said it should be up to the woman to decide how much to give him. Sherri thinks that he probably told his wife he agreed to 10% and she told him to ask for more.
Megan Mullally appeared on the show to promote Young Frankenstein, her latest Broadway show. Barbara said, “Who knew you could sing?” Apparently Barbara didn’t know that she has done Broadway musicals before.
Megan had a day’s notice to audition in front of Mel Brooks for the show. When she got to the hotel, she practiced her songs in her bathroom from midnight to 2:30 a.m. She said that the movie version has always been one of her favorite movies, but the stage version is completely different, including her role.
In the musical, she appears on stage and then there is a big break of time where she does not appear. She joked that she goes back into her dressing room and orders thing online.
Sherri went to ask her a question and called her “Karen,” which was her character on Will and Grace. Megan said that she didn’t even notice, because she is used to people calling her Karen. She thinks that a reunion show might happen in the future.
Greta van Susteren from Fox News appeared on the show to talk about some current cases in the news. The first topic was Stacy Peterson. Greta saw the autopsy report from the third wife and it is clear that it was murder, although it has not been officially ruled such. There is also no proof that Drew was in the house when the first wife died. He has not been arrested for the murder of Stacy because, even though you don’t need a body, you need some proof her being dead, like a “pile of blood.” Sherri said that it is easier on CSI because all the evidence is there and they solve the murder quickly.
The second story about the murder of Meredith Kercher. Her roommate, Amanda Knox, an American exchange student living in Italy, has been detained and questioned, as have two other people who are suspects. She has not been formerly charged.
Dennis Quaid’s twins were given too much medication and almost died. He is suing the drug manufacturer because the wrong drug was pulled of the shelf to be administered, due to similar packaging. The drug company may have been on notice about the labeling. Greta thinks that he may have settled with the hospital confidentiality and that is why he is only suing the drug company now. She said that this kind of thing happens all the time, but we don’t hear about it because the other parents aren’t famous.
The final topic was whether the woman should be arrested for creating a MySpace page of a fake teenager, which may have led to a girls’ suicide. Although it is difficult to show criminal causation, there may be grounds for a civil lawsuit.

Thanks for the recap Winnie,
I really appreciate this blog.
I didn’t get to see the show, I’m so busy lately.

Why have the comments died down? I’m fairly new to this website and don’t make a lot of comments, but I have to say that after another dull episode of The View, I come to this website to satisfy my craving for intelligent and thoughtful perspectives into different points of view. Please rainlillie, New Linda, Sandy, Rachel, Doug, and all the rest that I neglected to name, come back to the comments! This is the only way to quench my thirst for a good episode of The View!!!

Today’s show was wayyy better than yesterday despite the fact that Barb was there.
I found the part where she was showing Soff…err I mean SHOWING her XMas cards to be crass and boring. It reminded me of going to a friends house and pulling out her family camping vacation trip with the family. Yawn. Yeah Barb, we get it, you have famous ‘friends’.
I found it strange and rather rude that Whoopi would open up the XMas card (from EH) and not READ who sent it. And to admit it on national tv?
The Presidential candidate coffee article was so dumb. Dumb that they discussed it and dumb that the AP would write an article about it.
Is Sherri the new resident Christian voice now? Seems like Barb is always deferring those type of questions to her. Even Sherri looked annoyed at the coffee question (and she’s normally kissing Barbs butt!)
Whoopi was less argumentative but she always seems to want the last word and has to be right. It’s becoming a turnoff.
I liked the interview with Greta’s but the ladies did tend to talk over one another (as usual).
Most of the subjects today were a little lame but the energy was up.

Hey M,
I’ve been trying to do some last minute shopping and get my house ready for visiting relatives. You know the kind that can spot dust on your shelf a mile away LOL!
Stacee, I agree about the coffee thing. That was pretty boring. I don’t drink coffee, but even if I did I would still find that subject boring. My hope is it wouldn’t matter to the voters what color or what gender the spouse is of someone running for office… Okay that’s in a perfect world. Hopefully one day we’ll get there, sooner rather than later. I’ve always liked Greta, she’s one of the most sane people on Faux News.

Is it me, or does it seem race is going to be an issue a lot this season?
December 13th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
I actually did enjoy today’s show, maybe because it was better than yesterday’s. IMO. Still, it seems so awkward sometimes lately! Whether it’s HT or the interviews, there doesn’t seem to be that comfortable, conversational flow like from back in the day. It’s like they all have their scripted lines and questions, and are at their first rehearsal or something. I personally like it when BW is on, and was rather surprised (because she always tries to maintain such neutrality) that she brought up the question of appropriateness about GWB’s (gag) Christmas card being religious in nature. She may not have blatantly said that she thought it was inappropriate, but it was pretty clear she thought it was. Of course, to redeem herself for the chance at any future interviews, she interjected later in the show (during a completely different discussion) that she thought they were lovely people and didn’t mean to imply there was anything wrong with it … funny.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Tina, I hope it won’t be.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
I,probably like many of you, are busy mailing presents, buying last min gifts, etc to sit still long enough to last thru an entire “View”. When I see Bawa come on stage I say “oh well..” and get ready to listen to some more of “I don’t like to talk about myself but..” chatter and tamping down other free flowing speech. Why is it that on days when I just bathed my Yorkie, vacuumed the place, look a wreck that an unexpected visit from the boy(man)friend occurs? Oh what the heck, what woman dresses to the nines at home anyway. Remember Beaver’s mom who walked around at home in dresses and heels?
December 13th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
LOL! May that’s so true. I cleaned my closets yesterday, trying to make room for the new stuff. As soon as I had everything out and all over the place. My dear old in-laws stopped by on a surprise visit. They’re like did we catch at a bad time? I smiled and said of course not.
How many of you guys would rather have friends and family call before they stop by?

“there doesn’t seem to be that comfortable, conversational flow like from back in the day. It’s like they all have their scripted lines and questions, and are at their first rehearsal or something. ”
I totally agree. When Rosie was on, before all the craziness. It seemed as though they really had a good time. There was one day in particular that I found EH tolerable. I think it was when she and Rosie did the celebrity Easter eggs segment. My daughter laughed really hard when Rosie smashed the Trump egg.

rain- I’m not a big coffee drinker either (good thing I’m not running for president, rolling eyes). I have the occasional cup and I love indulging in frapps but those occasions are few and far between. The article itself is not one I would expect from the AP nor would they seem to spark interest from mature adults interested in REAL issues. Rather, I’d expect to see right out of the pages of “Tiger Beat”…
Doug, Barb struck me as being passive aggressive on the XMas card issue. I felt she threw it out there for the other ladies to pick up on. Pretty cowardly, if you ask me. Then when they did not bite, she tried to make light of it.
Forgot to mention above that I really liked the Jordon’s card. What a beautiful looking family.
May - LOL

Me, me, me me!!
That’s a huge pet peeve of mine.

Continued, because for some reason it submitted without me pressing the button:
I remember a few segments where Rosie could take the most mundane topic and make it so fun.
My most favorite was when they had the mixed drink episone and the lady/model/chef from the Bravo channel/ ex of Rushde(?) was a guest. I got a kick out of that.
Gosh I miss her.

rainlillie Says:
“I don’t drink coffee,…”
Is that due to religious reasons?!?!
December 13th, 2007 at 6:17 pm
I’m under the impression that some Mormons don’t drink coffee or tea due to religious reasons. Perhaps that is why Babs brought it up. Sherri is a Born Again so maybe Babs got her religions confused.
December 13th, 2007 at 6:39 pm
M-
Just for you…my thoughts.
Okay, I just saw the clip.
I’m going to connect the dots here. The AP wrote the article to “out” Mitt. A seemingly innocent question…what type of coffee do you drink…revealed that Mitt doesn’t drink any. Most likely due to his religion, IMO.
This is so frustrating to me because the HT should have addressed the AP intentions, not the article itself. Now that would have been a good HT.
December 13th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
New Linda,
they asked all the candidates if and how they like their coffee.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
I’m not sure I understand your point, Stacee.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Oh, I get what you are trying to say. I saw the clip, I know they asked each candidate the question. But I still stand by comment #17 that the question wasn’t innocent.

It is true that Mormons do NOT consume caffeine, including cola….
December 13th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
I haven’t read about the Mormon faith in many many many many years. But from my recollection, it isn’t caffeine per se. It’s “hot beverages” and the Church defined that to include coffee and tea because of the high caffeine content.
So there is a caffeine tie because the Church made that connection, but the doctrine speaks to “hot beverages.” For this reason, Mormon’s do and can drink cola, hot chocolate, and foods that contain caffeine.
December 13th, 2007 at 8:34 pm
ella,
I just don’t like the taste of coffee. I like green tea and hot cocoa. I don’t belong to any religion in particular.
December 13th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
I have not seen the AP clip about the coffee survey. I watched The View today and thought the coffee survey was a “tongue in cheek” Hot Topic. I felt that we were suppose to find a racist connection or some such comment. Remember ? ….. the coffee that Clinton liked received a humorous response about the fact he would take it black or white. lots of different ways, meant many wives, etc. There were many similar responses and it was all very funny to me. However, I have a warped sense of humor so… bare with me.
December 13th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Marilyn,
The AP clip you are referring to is the HT discussed on the show today.
I agree that the show was tongue and cheek, and that’s the problem I had with it. They had an opportunity to delve into why the AP might have chosen to survey the candidates on coffee. The hosts did ask the why question, but failed to provide reasons.
And no, the answer isn’t as Whoopi said because they have nothing better to do.
I think Babs knew about the Mormon coffee connection but didn’t bring it up directly. She was the one who brought up the fact that Mitt doesn’t drink coffee and then ask Sherri if she didn’t drink coffee due to religion. It seemed as though she wanted the conversation to “go there” but none of the hosts were knowledgable enough about the Mormon religion to understand her segway.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
If anyone is interested, here’s a link to a PBS special on Mormonism: http://www.pbs.org/mormons/view/
I’m going to watch it now.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
“It seemed as though she wanted the conversation to ‘go there’ but none of the hosts were knowledgable enough about the Mormon religion to understand her segway.”
Well, seriously, if that’s the case and BW wanted to “go there”, Sherri, although I love her dearly, bless her heart, is the last person to be expected to pick up on such a clever segue.
And the hot beverage Mormon thing … didn’t they say that Romney doesn’t drink coffee, but he does drink hot chocolate? I may be wrong, but I think that’s what they said.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
Doug,
What I meant is that Babs probably thought Sherri didn’t drink coffee either because of her religion and that would have opened the door to have the discussion about religion and coffee.
Yes, they mentioned hot chocolate. My understanding is that the Church doesn’t include hot chocolate (even though it’s hot and contains caffeine) on their list of forbidden beverages.
I don’t understand the logic, but it’s religion after all so there doesn’t have to be any. It just is what it is.
December 14th, 2007 at 1:16 am
No disrespect to anyone, but that’s just friggin’ weird. Maybe Swiss Miss paid Joseph a follow-up visit, too, and exempted the hot chocolate thing. Anyway, back to the View … peace out!

Doug,
You are sooooooooo funny LOL!

#29 Doug
very good
I myself am a coffee drinker, thank goodness nothing against that in my faith. Lordy me, I’d have to be a sinner then, cause I “have” to have my coffee in the morning, or I’m not moving.
