The View December 18th Recap: Denis Leary and Mike Greenberg

by

denis-leary.jpgToday on The View, Barbara Walters wore another festive outfit, this time a bright red suit jacket. Joy Behar said that she looked like Liberace. She joked that Barbara is on all the best-dressed lists all year and then at Christmas dresses gaudily.

Barbara shared more holiday cards that she received from Liz Taylor, Joan London (who had her children, including two sets of young twins, in a Brady Bunch themed photo), Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Graham (with a giant family, to which Sherri said “He’s still alive?” and Whoopi said something about there not being any Black people in the photo), and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes (suede card with satin ribbon; Joy got one too).

Whoopi said that she doesn’t like the long letters that come with Christmas cards. She wonders whether she really needs to know all the details about people’s families? Sherri sends those letters out because we don’t communicate enough these days. Joy said that we are in constant contact now with e-mail and cell phones. Sherri said that it is not a deep communication that way. Whoopi said that she likes people to call her, but doesn’t have an answering machine and doesn’t use e-mail.

Barbara said that when gets pictures of babies in Christmas cards, they all look the same and she doesn’t know who the cards are from. Sherri said that she sends a photo of her with Jeffrey so that people will know who it is from. Whoopi was surprised that Barbara used the word “tykes” when talking about children, because no one uses that word very often.

Rush Limbaugh asked on his radio show whether America wants to watch a woman age in the White House, adding that being President ages someone rapidly. Joy thinks that he has a point that a person’s looks impact an election. Barbara said that he is specifically talking about women, such as actresses who are expected to be sexy. She said that we don’t want a woman president to be sexy, but good at her job. Sherri agreed that a boob job is not going to find Osama Bin Laden. Barbara pointed out that Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, and Golda Meir all aged in office. She said that Gandhi was assassinated, joking that maybe it was because she was not sexy.

Joy said that men are held to a standard too, like people who say that John McCain is too old to be president. She also said that Kucinich would not be elected because he looks like a Keebler elf. Whoopi thinks that society is changing and people are more against plastic surgery and are focusing on aging naturally.

Rush also mentioned that an obese person could not be elected president. Sherri said that people might worry about them having a heart attack in office. Whoopi said that we have had some pretty chunky presidents in the past, however.

Denis Leary from Rescue Me appeared on the show. Denis called Rush Limbaugh a “stupid, fat, Viagra-eating” man and said that he hates him. He added that usually the opposite of what Rush says is the truth. Denis said that “white men have screwed this country up” and would like a Black president or a female president, or it all rolled into one. Denis thinks that the better a President does, the better they look in office, pointing out that Bill Clinton looked pretty good when he left office. Denis wants a president who speaks well and is not a joke or an idiot.

He is both a writer and producer of Rescue Me and is struggling between both sides of the writer’s strike. He thinks that after Christmas everyone is going to be angry about not having new shows airing and the pressure will be on the writers.

Denis talked about the book Rescue Me: Uncensored. It has transcripts of favorite scenes and behind the scenes photographs. Proceeds from books bought directly from his foundation site will go to his charity. He has put together a training facility to train firefighters in putting out fires in high rise buildings. His cousin, a firefighter, died in 1999 in Massachusetts. His foundation has helped firefighters through major initiatives in Massachusetts, New York, and New Orleans.

The federal, state, and local governments are not helping out firefighters and that is why he has the foundation. He said that donations to the website will be turned around and put into a building in less than a year. He said that firefighters are always at work saving people and we just don’t hear about it unless something goes badly. At the end of the segment, Whoopi stood up and applauded his efforts.

Sherri Shepherd went behind the scenes of Broadway’s Mary Poppins. She was able to meet Mary Poppins, go on the stage, visit the wig room, and even dress up like Mary Poppins herself and “fly.” She joked after the flight (in which she was hooked up with a harness) that it was a nice treat for a single lady. Her tour guide was Thomas Schumacher, the author of How Does the Show Go On?: An Introduction to Theater. It is written primarily for children, but can be for anyone.

I thought that the segment was pretty fun. Sherri sang a bit when she was dressed up like Mary and she had a good voice, I thought. I also thought it was funny when got so excited being in the wig room, calling it heaven. Here is a photo of her getting snuggly with a wig. More photos at the end of the post.

Mike Greenberg, host of the new game show Duel appeared on the show. He said that he only knows about 20% of the answers to the questions. People go head-to-head against each other. They choose their competitor based only their profession, which can break down stereotypes.

Whoopi asked Greenberg (who also works for ESPN) about the Mitchell Report and if it will take the heat off of Barry Bonds because so many players were named. He said yes, because misery loves company. Roger Clemens was also in the report, so Barry is not the only top player to be linked to the scandal. He doesn’t think that it will stop the use of steroids. He feels bad for the kids who are looking up to the players.

It sounds like it was a good show. I hope to find a clip of Dennis Leary on the View on youtube.

    Winnie-

I know this is a blog about “Watching the View”. However, many times we talk about Rosie O’Donnell, with fondness.I found your Blog, after reading a lovely article you had written about Ro, and she put it on her web site.I have been “hooked” on your site from that day.
I am trying to figure out what happened between Rosie and the reporter, John Carter. It seems to me that her blog entries, regarding this “interview/no interview”, leave several gaps of information. Sometimes her enteries are hard for me to understand, as she rarely finishes a sentence.
Do you know the whole story or does any of our “view” bloggers, know what really happened.?
One day she was shooting pictures and talking up a storm to him and the next Rosie blog referred to no “crappy TV show”. She does not even show her video. Shouldn’t she have known better than to jump into whatever the heck happened? ( et-access-etc. )

    What the heck did happen?

  3. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Marilyn: From what I can discern from her posts, she was going to do an interview with the young man because he was a new reporter, etc. Then the story was sold or going to be sold to ET or Access. She thought that the young man did it, but then retracted that saying it wasn’t his doing, so maybe it was his station or producers or something? She said that it isn’t going to air on those shows though. (Does that help? It still sounds a bit confusing)

  4. marilyn Says:

Now back to today !!! :-)

I enjoyed the show. I thought Sherrie was great in the Broadway Show segment.
The gals seem to be settling into a nice rhythm with each other. I enjoy comedy, so I appreciate a day of serious and light mingled into one show.

  5. Viva Says:

I’m soooo disappointed I missed today’s show. I’m in love with Denis Leary. sigh
Rainlillie if you find a clip of him on the show today please let me know!

  6. marilyn Says:

Thanks Winnie- for your input about Rosie.

It is confusing. I would think if she had consented to the interview , with him, that her common sense would tell her that once it hit his station’s airways, it would be open game for all the faux news. Something seems strange.

  7. Dee Says:

I think it is amazing how Denis Leary and Brad Pitt are in NOLA building and our government is inept at doing the same thing. I was tickled to hear Denis talk about putting up five firehouses for NO and wanting to do more. I hope to get a check out soon.

I wondered if the Rosie interview was done with the agreement that it was for a certain station and then her agent told her it was going to be elsewhere. She wouldn’t have agreed to give him one if she had known up front that it was for sludge entertainment. It sounds like it was shut down, doesn’t mean it won’t be fodder on those shows though.:(

Sherri was cute on the set and she does those segments in a very entertaining way. Perhaps she can find a gig on Broadway?

Thanks again Winnie, for hosting this site, it is cathartic!

  8. Sandy Says:

I got to see some of today’s show. Not bad.

One thing I agreed with Sherri on is that we don’t communicate enough these days, especially in the long handwritten letters. Yes we have cell phones and email, but there are those who don’t. I too always send a nice handwritten letter in my cards, mostly to those who don’t have e-mails. I think most people like getting them. I always enjoy a letter when I get one.

I’m not really fond of Dennis Leary,..but I really, really aplaud all his work and foundation for firefighters.

I really enjoyed seeing Sherri in the Mary Poppins segment. It was fun to watch.

  9. Sandy Says:

    Winnie,
Is the blog contest a tie? I had to come vote last night, as I knew I would get to this morning. I looked when I logged on, at the vote, it seemed to be a tie.

  10. rainlillie Says:

    Viva ,
If I find a clip I will post it. I would like to see it too.

  11. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Not sure the official results yet. It was supposed to close at noon, but it is still open, so not sure what’s going on. Maybe she checked the results at noon? Will let you know if I hear the results!

  12. Stacee Says:

I thought today’s show was blah.

Barb trotted out her XMas cards - again. She started with a few stories, but to be honest I sorta spaced out. Her voice grates on my nerves.

They discussed Rush but I was not entirely clear on their positions. I think Joy agreed with his statement. I also think Barb said she liked him.

I LOVE Dennis Leary. He really lit into Rush. He mentioned his Viagra, lol. He also said the worse job you do, the worse you look (referring to Bush) and how bad he (Bush) speaks. He said he wants a change. Barb said she did not agree and then backed off, saying how she’s a newspaerson and can’t give an opinion (of course not, you got an XMas card from the White House). She is such a pansy who can’t (or won’t) take a stand. I remember when they were discussing the XMas card sent by Bush and her making a comment on it’s religious theme. She seemed to want the other girls to make an issue of it instead of saying how SHE herself felt. Same with the Romney coffee incident. It’s like she wants everyone else to carry the water so she won’t get wet.

I admire how Leary stands up for firemen. He makes great points. He also scored quite a few from me today!
    Firemen are so special IMO.

The rest of the show I really did not pay attention to.

I hope Barb is absent tommorrow.

  13. rainlillie Says:

“It’s like she wants everyone else to carry the water so she won’t get wet.”

Well put Stacee! I think Rush was detained for having Viagra without a prescription.

  14. rainlillie Says:

My post prematurely posted, before I finished. I like to add of all the things to get caught carrying, my guess is, most men wouldn’t want it to be Viagra.

  15. Sandy Says:

    Winnie, and others,
I just read on Reality that the voting will be open for another day because it is very close. So go vote again before noon tomorrow.

  16. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Thanks for the update Sandy. Looks like voting is ongoing, so I would appreciate another vote if you guys have the time! Thanks!

  17. Stephanie Says:

Winnie, you wrote an article on Rosie? I remember her posting an article, well shes posted a few, but I didnt realize it was written by you. Thats so cool :)

  18. Winnie McCarthy Says:

I just saw a commercial for the Insider which is airing the “exclusive Rosie interview.” So I guess it is airing.

  19. Doug Robertson Says:

Nothing against Babs, I do like her, but I really don’t care who the crap sends her Christmas cards. Seriously, I don’t. That got old really fast. We get it. It’s pretty much a given that being who she is, is going to get a card from everyone who’s anyone. Or at least from their respective staffs, on their behalf.

    Love Denis Leary.

  20. Stephanie Says:

Oh that sucks, she really didnt want them to have it :(

  21. Winnie McCarthy Says:

I think that maybe they just didn’t pull the ad in time, because there is nothing on the episode about it. Although upcoming they are going to discuss a Whoopi/Sherri “feud” based on their argument yesterday about autographs. The Insider is so trashy.

  22. Aileen Says:

Well, I watched the Insider just in case and the interview with Rosie didn’t air.. YYEEEAAAHHHH!!!! But they did cover the Whoopi and Sherry YOU WANNA FIGHT!!! scuff yesterday. I did think that was funny and Sherry recovered well after Whoopi looked like she was gonna shmack her down. Ok today’s show, more xmas cards by BW.. Uuggghhhh. BW needs some shock therapy or something. I was laughing when Joy was making fun of her xmas attire. Is Whoopi getting on anyone elses nerves or is just me? She is getting crotchedy and crotcrotchedier more and more. She is getting annoying for me where she opposes everything with a disaproving face. It almost appears she invalidates all of Sherrys views and dismisses her with a tsk tsk..

Ok how is it that Dennis Leary is the only one to schmack down Rush Limbaugh? Are you kidding me? I cant believe the views hosts do not bring him to task. Are they afraid of getting on his bad side? Thank you Dennis Leary for speaking the truth and working on a great cause for our firefighters.

Ok is it me or did Joy not get the hidden sexist statement in Rush Limbaugh’s statement about Hillary Clinton. I mean I think she missed it all together. Thank god BW did let that slip and did a great job counting his statement and brought up some historical names like Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gahndi and Golda Meir. These woman had broken grounds and lead their people which their looks didn’t play into their ability to lead. Thanks BW, you finally said something relevant.

Ok, Sherry’s skit today on Mary Poppin’s was fantastic. The wig room I thought for sure she would pass out in. I was very surprised that her signing was pretty good. She must of enjoyed that skit. It was great.

  23. Megan Says:

    I voted for Winnie!

I think it’s funny that Sherri mentioned people being concerned about a president having a heart attack when you think about our current VP. :/

Incidentally, I saw on the ‘internets’ today that Johnny Depp is the #1 best autograph signer and will spend hours signing autographs. Will Ferrell was the worst! I was wondering if we’d see Whoopi on the list one way or another. ;)

  24. msroncon Says:

I love seeing the Christmas cards. I also loved the Mary Poppins skit. Sherri did a great job.

  25. New Linda Says:

I also enjoyed the Christmas cards. I like to see how creative other people are (famous or not). I loved the Joan Lunden (spelling?) one.

Mary Poppins is a wonderful Broadway show. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did.

  26. Janet Says:

Can you vote for Winnie more than once?

  27. Janet Says:

Can I vote more than once?

  28. Janet Says:

oops–sorry, I thought the first post didn’t go thru

  29. New Linda Says:

Janet, not from the same computer. Only one vote per computer.

  30. Ann Says:

Aileen - Whoopi annoys me too. It is so rude to have guests and then have the camera panning to Whoopi making a sour face. I loathe the way she treats Sherri - as much as I often disagree with Sherri, I want Sherri to get up and thump Whoopi for treating her like a 6 year old. I also find Whoopi very boring when she is pontificating and won’t let anyone get a word in.

  31. Lisa Says:

whoopie sucks…she hates the job and it shows

  32. Ann Says:

Lisa - I think you hit the hammer on the nail, but since Whoopi is being paid gazillions she should at least pretend to enjoy her job.
