The View December 19th Recap: “Bank on The View For the Holidays”
Today’s episode is entitled “Bank on ‘The View’ for the Holidays.” The four main hosts were present for this pre-taped episode.
It would cost you $86,000 to buy all the gifts in the 12 Days of Christmas. Whoopi Goldberg then gave the cost of each of the 12 things and they talked about it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd were concerned because the swans-a-swimming were much more expensive than the maids-a-milking. Sherri thought that pipers piping meant they would fix the plumbing and Whoopi made fun of her a little for it.
Have you ever held the threat of Santa not coming if the kid is bad? Elisabeth said that she uses Santa every day from Thanksgiving to Christmas to discipline Grace. She tries to sleep in bed with her and she tells Grace she has to sleep in her own bed or Santa won’t come. Sherri had a friend who held back presents from the kids when they did bad in school. Sherri never told Jeffrey anything about Santa so she doesn’t use the threat. Whoopi said that she works for Santa because they did a movie together so she will call Grace and tell her to sleep in her own bad. I thought the story about Grace not sleeping in her bed sounded familiar, so I checked my archives. Sure enough, Elisabeth did the same thing last year. I also knew we had heard Sherri’s story about the kids not getting toys for doing bad in school.
Whoopi always told her daughter that she could behave and get presents or not behave and the presents would go to a kid who can behave. She would contemplate it for a few days before deciding to be good. Joy told Whoopi that she should negotiate with terrorists. Joy thinks people should cut back on gifts because of the tough economic times. Whoopi said for adults, but not for little kids. Elisabeth said that Secret Santa is making a comeback because then you only buy one gift instead of one for everyone. Sherri started several years ago to only buy gifts for the kids and not adults, but then everyone kept having more babies and her list kept growing.
Joy recommended going to Etsy to buy homemade gifts. Her daughter makes ceramics and sells them on there.
The next segment was last minute holiday gifts for under $50:
* Skinkit Skins for phones, cameras, and laptop
* Mr. and Mrs. Kits
* Doodlebugz Crayola chalk placemats
* Books to Bed: books with matching pajamas
* Paint Your Own Ornaments Kits
* Handprint Canvas Kits
* Philosphy Gifts
* Sports Fan Tumbler Gift Set
Whoopi came out and stole some of the items. I don’t know why she thinks that repetitive shtick is funny. It is not.
The next segment was about cost-cutting ways to save on holiday foods and beverages:
* Panatone fruit cake: $9
* Frozen shrimp: $8; mix horseradish and ketchup to make cocktail sauce
* Make pigs in blanket with Hebrew National and Pillsbury dough
* Canned ham: $3/pound
* Pillsbury cookies instead of from bakery
* Make your own pumpkin pie
* Make Eggnog at home
* Get wine from Trader Joe’s
They poorly timed the segment because they finished it way too quickly and had nothing else to talk about.
In the next segment, Elisabeth Hasselbeck dressed the co-hosts under $100.00. Sherri was dressed in a grey cotton dress with gray tights from H&M. Joy wore a black skirt and jacket from H&M and she said she thought she looked like a flamenco dancer. The skirt was very static-y and kept bunching up. It was a pretty outfit, I thought. Whoopi was dressed in a vest and top and a blanket from Old Navy that she wrapped around herself. She also wore reindeer antlers. Elisabeth wore a red skirt and white jacket from Forever 21.
The final segment was gifts that give back throughout the year:
* Bejeweled Twist video game; for every game purchased, one is donated to the military troops; $19.95
* Cell Phones for Soldiers: donate old cell phones which are recycled and the money used to give phone cards to soldiers
* Hero Miles: donate frequent flyer miles to Hero Miles, which reuintes wounded soldiers with their families.
*One Laptop per child: If you buy one, they donate one to children in need around the world. $399
* Tom’s Shoes, $35-42; for every pair purchased, one is donated to people in need
* Mary Fisher Abataka jewelry: Jewelry made by women in Zambia
* Goodshop: virtual mall with variety of stores portion of proceeds goes to the charity of your choice

Whoopi was in a randy mood today! I can’t believe she said, “Trust me, I have learned to swallow.”
Then she made an allusion about the whipped cream. I can imagine BW cringing.

LOL! Erika,
Whoopi has way too many TMI moments.

I about fell over laughing when Whoopi said that they would have to drink all the wine to be able to do the following segement - EH has dressing them in holiday clothing.
I really enjoyed Whoopi and Joy today. They seemed in good moods and joking around a lot.
This is like the first time ever but…I felt sorry for EH today. During the xmas tree ornament part EH seemed excited and proud of the one she made and the lady was like, “Alright, you made that you can admitt it”. Just had a weird tone to it. Like yeah yeah ok Elizabeth we get it. I wanted to say…EH you were cute! I love ornaments and I’m sure yours was great. It’s nice seeing some xmas spirit.
Was it just me or did Whoopi and Joy seem totally not interested in the holiday food segement? They just wanted to eat and drink some wine. I think they have the right idea!
How funny would it be to have a drink with the girls from the view?

I liked how the food guy jokingly gave Whoopi grief. Like Joy, I am gastronomically incorrect and eschew red wine for white.
The fashion show: didn’t Sherri wear an all grey outfit last week? And didn’t Joy recently wear a black outfit with a flippy skirt? Really showed some creativity there. And dressing Whoopi in a blanket?

“Whoopi came out and stole some of the items. I don’t know why she thinks that repetitive shtick is funny. It is not.”
I agree with you Winnie; I don’t find it funny either.
Why doesn’t she just participate in that particular segment if she’s interested in the items being presented? Oh, maybe she doesn’t just so she can keep doing the same lame act, over and over again.
December 19th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Thanks for the update Winnie. All we had today in Wisconsin was weather reports! It’s a snow day!
December 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Oh! Happy snow day! Wish we could have a white christmas.
And Roger, don’t be mean. Please don’t send the mistletoe. Maybe you could just wrap yourself up in a big bow for me?

The View folks are out of touch. It’s not that hard to find nice clothes for under one hundred dollars. FYI: there are some nice consignment shops and ebay too. My hubby and I live a pretty conformable lifestyle and I haven’t spent a hundred dollars on an outfit for myself since we’ve had children. Not that I can’t afford it, I just don’t see the point.
December 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I’m in a winter wonderland too. Our schools let out early. We are going to get more on Sunday night.
December 19th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
may I ask where everyone is located?
I’m in California. No snow. But it sure is cold…well for me
December 19th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I’m in New York.
December 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
CA too, in SF.
Stacee, it seemed like Whoopi needed lots of attention today. The one funny thing about her present stealing was when she pulled the camera off TLB trying to show her family’s hand imprints.
December 19th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Cool. I lived in NYC for a couple of years just recently. Don’t miss it.
December 19th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
<Waves to Erika! Hi!!!!! You aren’t far! Glad to know I have a friend kinda close by.

“The one funny thing about her present stealing was when she pulled the camera off TLB trying to show her family’s hand imprints.”
LOL!

Rain, reading your post makes it funnier and I realized I made it sound literal. That would have been really funny!
December 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I’m in Seattle and we got “snow” the other day. You NYCers and Chicagoans would find it amusing. It’s not that it’s so much snow; it’s that we have hills and we’re ill-prepared. It’s pretty though.
December 19th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Am I the only one who was surprised that Sherri thought the song was talking about fixing pipes? Something else comes to my mind in regards to that part of the song. But I have a sick mind and I am embarrased to admitt that I alwayd chuckle when Chris Matthews says “Let’s play hard ball”.
Yes, I am weird

I have been curious as to where all my favorite View Bloggers live. Of course we know Roger is from Ohio !
I am in central New Jersey, “the Jersey shore”, 5 min from the Atlantic Ocean and about 45 min. south of NYC…Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi country ! ( he lives about 10 min from me - but I am in the ow rent district !).
That said, its 33 degrees, snowy, rainy today. But since global warming, we dont get much snow/ice in the mid Atlantic anymore like we used in the 60’s and 70’s whenI was a kid.
Anybody else want to share locational info ??!!

December 19th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
We got ourselves a good old fashion ice storm.
I was gonna complain about it, but then I saw NanC post…. Isnt there snow in Nova Scotia as late as May? makes this little ice storm kinda petty. lol
I really do enjoy all of you….. my favorite time of day is when I find myself in an intelligent discussion on this site.
THANKS WINNIE!!!

December 20th, 2008 at 5:14 am
Im originally from Massachusettes, so i def miss the snow this time of year. Its hard for me to get into the holiday spirit cause it just doesn “feel” right. Can you mail me some snow too Roger?
December 20th, 2008 at 7:32 am
NEW COMMENT RULE: You are not permitted to write that you are enjoying 70+ degree temps when the blog moderator’s car is buried under 6 inches of snow!
(Just kidding, of course)
It is times like this when my husband reminds me that I always say how much I love snow (usually in the summer when it is 100 degrees). If it were up to him, we would be living in the Northwest now.

#3 Jennie:
I thought Elisabeth was saying that Grace made that ornament and thats why that lady said ‘yeah admit it Elisabeth, you made it’. It did seem weird the way that segment lady said that though.
I thought the show was pretty imformative with the exception of Elisabeth dressing the cohosts for under 100.00, I always fast forward her useless fashion segments.
December 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 am
I’m in Los Angeles and wore sandals to a Chanukah party tonight. It got chilly in the evening but the day time was very temperate. Any other Angelenos in the group?

I truly hope the new year will bring some new segments to the show - the fashions under $100 routine is boring - everything about the show to me screams ‘been there done that’.
Maybe then need to shake the hosts up a little and include more guest hosts - someone that can contribute something meaningful (not like a Jessica Simpson who just sits there).
