The View December 20th Recap: Mary J Blige and Perez Hilton
Today on The View, Whoopi Goldberg came out wearing a blue feather boa. She was also wearing a white top and pants because she wanted to dress up for Christmas.
Barbara said that President just got finished giving a press conference and she hesitates to read what he said, because she doesn’t “know what the redhead will say.” President Bush said that he thinks a presidential candidate should have fair principles and should not rely on opinion polls or focus groups to decide how to lead the country. Joy said that she is laying off Bush for Christmas.
The next topic was the pregnancy of Jamie Lynn Spears. Barbara said that raising a child is difficult and you cannot totally blame the mother. Joy asked why they don’t blame father? Sherri said that she had great parents, but she was “girls gone wild.” Joy said that it is not 100% the parent’s fault, but she is involved in a psychodrama group and a lot of stuff goes back to the way that we were treated as children. She said that maybe they were not being parented properly. Whoopi said that her daughter had a child very young and you can teach your child, but at some point they have to make their own decisions. Sherri pointed out that the father of the child is 18 or 19 and it might be statutory rape. Barbara said that it might not be in Louisiana.
Whoopi said that if your child watches Jamie Lynn on her television show, you need to explain that she is a fake character and real people make mistakes. She added that children’s role models should be parents, not people on television. Sherri said that she is not seeing the real consequences of pregnancy because she is getting 1 million dollars for photos of her baby from a magazine. She added that Nickelodeon asks us to trust them and their programming.
Barbara said that parents should talk to the their kids about what they think about it and how they feel. Sherri said that children also need to have boundaries. Joy said that two things that she remembers from her education courses are “Telling is not teaching” and “the definition of learning is a change of behavior.”
When they returned from commercial, Whoopi was wearing a green Christmas hat that women in the audience gave her.
Barbara wanted to talk about what Nickelodeon should do. Sherri thinks that Nickelodeon should take Zoey 101 off the air because it sends a bad message to girls watching the show. Joy said that people who act out get more attention, like Britney Spears. Maybe Jamie Lynn is jealous of the attention that Britney Spears is getting. Barbara got angry and asked if they could get back to the topic of the impact of the television show on the child and stop talking about Jamie Lynn. Joy said something else about Jamie Lynn and Barbara got mad again. (She was being grouchy today).
Whoopi said that parents need to decide who their role models should be because you can’t make sure that people on television will not make mistakes. She said that if you have a person’s TV life be impacted by what they do off of television, then it would affect a lot of people, like Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical. Joy suggested that Nickelodeon have another show that shows the trouble that comes with having a baby at 16, like getting up in the middle of the night. Sherri said that she doubts that Jamie Lynn will be doing that.
They finally moved off of this subject and onto the subject of Christmas. Whoopi said that she finally got in the Christmas spirit the other day when she was listening to Christmas music and spraying snow on the window. Her favorite carol is “Children Go Where I send Thee” by Peter, Paul and Mary. Joy said that she likes “Grandma got run over by a reindeer.” Barbara likes “O Holy Night.” She also doesn’t know if she loves or hates “Jingle Bells” with dogs barking. Sherri sings “I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus” to Jeffery, then joked that she tells him that he isn’t here anymore.
Sherri Shepherd was named one of the top 10 breakout stars of the year by Entertainment Weekly!
Mary J Blige appeared on the show to promote her album Growing Pains. She said that success soon in the music business can drive a person crazy and without someone looking out for them they can be in trouble. She echoed what Alicia Keys said yesterday that everyone tells you “Yes.”
Mary said that her fans are like shrinks to her. She speaks to them through her albums and they helped her out by buying her last album when she had nothing. Then she meets them on the street and she counsels them. After the success of her last album, including Grammy Awards, she believed in herself less than other people did. She still has a lot of self-esteem issues and she has to remind herself to believe in herself and believe in God. She needs to not beat herself up about everything.
Her marriage to Kendu Isaacs was important because he snatched the blindfold off her and had her look at her environment and what she wasn’t doing to herself. He is a “positive, positive man” and has a loving family. She was near dying and she was scared and wanted to live and Kendu has been helping her through learning to love herself.
Perez Hilton appeared on the show to talk about the top celebrity stories of 2007. He said that he is kind of obsessed with Britney Spears and could talk about her all hour. He thinks that Britney will have to do something now to outdo her sister Jamie Lynn. He said that Britney may seem stupid, but she knows what she is doing and wants all of the attention. Perez blames their mother and thinks Zoey 101 should be canceled. He admitted that it is a vicious cycle where the stars act out for attention, he reports on it, they get the attention, so they act out again.
The other big story of the year was Anna Nicole Smith. Perez does not believe that Larry Birkhead was the gay lover of Howard K Stern. He added that Birkhead wants to date Britney Spears. Perez said that everyone keeps suing Smith’s estate and the baby doesn’t have her mom’s money yet. He thinks that the baby is being taken care of.
He is friends with Amy Winehouse and her situation is very sad. All of her friends and family feel helpless. Amy is the “only crazy one” in the family, so she doesn’t blame the mother there. He feels bad for Amy, but thinks that Britney acts out on purpose.
Whoopi said that she has been accused of everything they talked about today and she knows that there is always another side to the story. She loves Perez, though. Perez said that if Britney wants to get out of the spotlight she should get out of Los Angeles.
Perez said that if Britney Spears committed suicide tomorrow, she would be the only one to blame, and maybe her mother. He does feel that the paparazzi go overboard sometimes, but does not consider himself a paparazzi because he doesn’t take photos.
Perez said the best part of the year was the Beckhams coming to America, especially the fact that David Beckham is doing an underwear campaign.
Mary J Blige then performed her new song “Just Fine.”

Are the regular cameramen on strike? A few times when the cameras cut away and came back, I almost got seasick. Sherri was pretty pissed when they were discussing Jamie Spears. Did you see the look on her face, and she started scribbling really fast on her paper.
I actually agree with some of what she said. Mainly, that it seems as if Jaimie is getting rewarded, by getting a million dollars for baby pictures.
In this case you can blame the parents for letting their 16 year old daughter move in with a guy. Britney on the other hand is an adult, so she is responsible for her own choices.
I agree with Whoopi about role models, tv personalities aren’t real and parents and other family members should be role models for children.
It’s okay for children to admire the persons talent, but IMO that’s as far as it should go.
I liked the Mary J interview, although I’m not a fan of her music.

Okay, I’ll be first. Thought today’s show was ultra boring…kept leaving to read the news on computer and listened from another room. Bawa insisted on having her views heard continually especially on the Spears kids. Enough already! Who cares? Give me some issues of newsworthy importance. I would liked to have heard Whoppee cut loose with remarks on bush’s so called speech where he criticized Congress. What a nerve that clown has…he’s the one who keeps the veto pen going! Alas, Joy has decided to stop criticizing bush till after Christmas. Seems like all the fun will have to wait till Jan…then around the 7th Miss Screech and Yell will be back to blather on about her little one for days/weeks/months,etc. Maybe it’s time to clean house, plant garden stuff, etc. till next football season when she “may” leave again..I can only hope!!!
December 20th, 2007 at 11:22 am
I do not think she is getign rewarded for having a baby anymore than angelina and kate holmes did for there baby pics. if you saying the mags should show her she made a mistake by not buying the pic i understand that but it is no more a reward than any other picture buying from any other celeb
December 20th, 2007 at 11:26 am
May,
I think little boy George thinks the Republicans still control congress.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:30 am
mibi,
all the other women you named are just that women. Jamie is a child. In stead of paying her for the pictures, why not donate to programs to prevent teen pregnancy or programs to help teen mothers.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:38 am
i understand what your saying and they should do something like that it would be a better message . it just when i hear she was rewarded and she is in a backhanded way , that she did not get prgenant to get the money so i guess my problme was semantics not sentitment
December 20th, 2007 at 11:50 am
I don’t think JL purposely got herself pregnant to make a buck, but she is clearly milking the situation for what it is worth. You don’t think there is some gain (aka, reward) in that?
December 20th, 2007 at 11:57 am
there is a reward it no diff than other who are older than her who got the same thing. but because she is so young maybe it could be coined something else so it clear she in a diff catagory
December 20th, 2007 at 11:57 am
I also don’t think she got pregnant for money. She made a mistake, as we all have. When you encourage this type of behavior, what do you think is going to happen?
I mean really…did her parents think she and her boyfriend where just sitting around playing checkers while they were living together?
December 20th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
I see a BIG difference between Angelina and JL. Angelina was hunted through her whole pregnancy. She controlled the situation by granting pictures with donations to her charities. The only charity the Spears family has had is the Spear family. There was no need to expose this unfortunate turn of events through a $1 Million story.
The only upside to the story is that Joe Simpson’s planned cd debut for AShley was impacted by the JL story.
December 20th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Kudos to you Dee. I agree with you 100%.
As for any comments about the show. Well I’m still on my view fast and just reading the recaps. I wish someone would put clips on youtube. I really don’t want to torture myself having to watch the whole episodes again.
December 20th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
figured out the word i was looking for before that would have ment a little more. it is permissive becauese magazines reward celebs for good , bad and indifferent behaviour so it nothing new for them. so if you want to point out the problem the mag has it is being permissive.not that it make a diff its just more to the point to me
December 20th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
How sad that the Spears family has become The View’s topic of interest! With everything that is going on in the world,(such as potential Cheney impeachment hearings, and our Iraqi troops committing suicide) why are we concentrating on these people? The show has become MUCH too shallow for me!
December 20th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
With all of Britney’s problems, shouldn’t Lynne Spears recognize at this point that her daughters are unable to handle celebrity. Wouldn’t a responsible parent remove their child from the media glare and get the whole family counseling? Unless….it’s all about celebrity and the money.
December 20th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
New Linda,
I agree, we must accept the fact that the View is never going to really cover hard news stories. They have become a daytime version of entertainment tonight type shows.
December 20th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
I guess my main concern is not with Jamie S., but with the message this sends to other young girls. I agree with Joy, perhaps Nickelodeon should have a program about all the troubles and problems that come with such young people having babies. Babies having babies is what I call it.
I also agree with Linda, there are far more important things going on in this world that need to be discussed. But..I feel that the View finds it a hot topic, because ..well it seems to be a hot topic, doesn’t it? Why and how we got to this place, where the lives of celebrities are more important than our country’s problems, I don’t know.
December 20th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
In regards to “hot topics”, I really miss Rosie and her ability to delve into a serious topic. I stopped watching “The View” after Rosie left because it always seemed as if Elisabeth Hasselbeck was rewarded for her screechy, bad behavior (but I continued reading the boards as I find them interesting and I have watched while Elisabeth is on maternity leave).
Just my opinion…when Rosie was on “The View”, the conservative pundits (such as Bill O’Reilly and Joe Scarborough) were relentless in putting down Rosie’s comments and stating how hiring Rosie made Barbara Walters look bad. I think BW took this personally and as a result wanted to be “friends” with these pundits. As a result, they no longer have serious discussions about the war in Iraq, congress, health care, etc etc etc. A real discussion on these topics might “offend” Barbara’s conservative friends. Barbara has stated on numerous occasions that she doesn’t want to provide her political agenda because she is a “journalist”. However, from listening to her “view” over the years I have concluded that she may be liberal on a few issues, but is basically a conservative. People may believe she is liberal because of her ability to play devil’s advocate when questioning other’s views.
December 20th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
“New Linda,
I agree, we must accept the fact that the View is never going to really cover hard news stories. They have become a daytime version of entertainment tonight type shows.”
Old Linda posted the comment re The View covering hard news stories. That said, I’ll piggyback on her thought. If The View is going to cover news stories or interview candidates on issues then they should know something about the topics beyond the superficial.
December 20th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
#14 Marie “Wouldn’t a responsible parent remove their child from the media glare and get the whole family counseling?”
Yes, a responsible parent would do that. However, a responsible parent wouldn’t have let it get this bad. I don’t believe Lynn Spears is now, ever was or will ever be a responsible parent. The father too. I believe Britney was pimped out and made to be a media whore at a very young age - Jamie also. Make no mistake this is all about the mom’s version of celebrity (and wanting to live vicariously through her children). She has made quite the profit from her daughters’ fortunes and misfortunes (when Britney was starting out her mother was her manager). Although Jamie is still up and coming the mom has yet to get rich off of her.
Do any of you remember Britney’s early interviews? She would talk about how her and her mom are more best friends than mother and daughter. She would also say that she wants to be a young mother because her mother was a young mother and you can be closer to your kids that way and have the energy to keep up with them. This family has some serious issues and I feel badly for both Jamie and Britney.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:09 pm
BW was definitely being crotchety today. She was way too controlling during the hot topics. She really got on my nerves- she could comment on JL, but wouldn’t let the hosts expound on the issue beyond her prescribed topic.
On the positive side, I loved Mary J.’s song - “Just Fine”. I just discovered the video last week on Youtube and thought it was an old song, so I was happy to hear it live. She samples Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop til You Get Enough” which I also love! So for me , the show ended on a high note.(ha)
December 20th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
Sorry about that New Linda and Linda. I just saw Linda, and I’m so use to typing New Linda. Now we have Shannon and Shannon P… This is all confusing LOL!
I agree that the View should cover both types of stories, but I really believe the days of them doing that, left with Rosie. Rosie had the ability to do both, It seems that the show isn’t going to go back in that direction. Which is why I’m not going to watch after EH comes back.
December 20th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Barb really bugged me too.
Also I really hated when she mentioned the Bush press interview but did not really make a comment. So why even mention it? It’s obvious she is not interested in discussing politics on the show. Remember, we need light, happy subjects.
The discussion of JL really got on my nerves. I side with Whoopis viewpoints. We -as parens - really need to reevaluate our priorities and start teaching our kids what’s real/vs characters a star plays. We also need to help kids undertstand the true meaning of role models. They should start within the home and community.
Sherri looked P.Oed today! Her scribbling today reminded me of EH when she flings and rips up her blue cards!
Watching the Perez interview was incredibly painful. I did not enjoy that. And then of course righteous Whoopi went on her endless spiel…
Like Erika, the show ended on a high note for me because of Mary. What an incredible performance! She sang her butt off, and I felt it. I like her. For the R&B listeners if you want a good album, pick up her 1st CD, “What’s the 411″. She’s had such an amazing journey. Great singer and she looked wonderful today. Her interview was good too.

Linda,
I visited your site and signed the petition. Thanks for putting the info out there.

I just read Rain’s post and I signed the petition as well.

Rainlillie and New Linda, thanks so much for signing…. but “Old” Linda? lol

I heard about the site while in the car listening to the Randi Rhodes show. I came home and forgot to visit the site! Thanks for linking it, Linda.
I signed too.
December 20th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Whoopi really annoys me when she doesnt let Sherri talk. Even though I dont always agree with what Sherri says its really uncomfortable to watch Whoopi shut her down all the time. And why did the camera keep going on Whoopi when she was making one of her ‘faces’? Someone needs to tell he to stop doing that!
December 20th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Ok Whoopis outfit wasnt good enough to point out first of all.. Im just saying…
Whoopi made no sense in regards to her daughters teenage pregnancy. I dont know what her point was. “Her daughter made decisions based on how she was as a parent” I wish she would elaborate. She has said in the past that her mother had mostly raised her daughter because of her work. So does that mean she was absent and her daughter suffered for it?
Whoopi again not letting Sherry make her point. Your right Rain, Sherry looks pissed. Uh Rain? you watched the show? (pigs are flying)
Who thinks this teenage pregnancy will boost her career? hmmmm Look at Britney all all the publicity for just going to starbucks.
Mary J interview was awesome. She is so real.
Did you see Whoopis face when Perez was spewing his hate? lmaoooooo now she has her chin in her hands just staring… Perez makes reference to a true story reported by the tabloids.. oh geez.. my chin is in my hands too. Finally Whoopi speaks!!!! some voice of reason!!! Thank you Whoopi in this case. Sheesh.. the interview with Perez makes me feel slimy.. taking a shower now
December 20th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

New Linda hearts David Gregory despite the fact that he has two first names
December 20th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
I didn’t hear that JL Spears was living with the guy! I thought it was bad enough that this “mother” let a 16 yr old DATE a 19 yr old! And I keep hearing it was a long-time boyfriend—so was she 14 and he 17 when it started? THAT’S WHERE THE MOTHER/FATHER GETS THE BLAME! That is outrageous to me (mom to a 16-yr-old girl myself…)
Also, while Angelina Jolie and Katie Holmes are adults, they also were pregnant outside of marriage….not the same outrage, but still not really the message to send our kids. They should know better to have safe sex…
December 20th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Barbara was being very rude and cranky.
Whoopi was a teenage mother and so was her daughter. This is why she only elaborated on role models.
December 20th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Thank you for the link, New Linda! I can officially say LOL! But I have to give the guy a break–he wasn’t too bad! You (and HuffPo) obviously haven’t seen MY HUBBY dance! HA!
December 20th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
The View would be better without Barbara Walters. She needs to retire gracefully. I can’t stand her, she contributes nothing but annoyance. I hate her saying, “Okay lets move along” grrrrrrrrr Hot topics are not very hot at all. And Whoopi and Sherry need to work their thang out in private because it’s coming across as very awkward to see those two together. Joy is kind of dull lately.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
At eighteen Whoopi married a sixteen year old…maybe because she was preggers by him? I don’t know. But it seems that JL and Whoopi have lots in common.
Ella, I was totally digging his dance moves.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
I really thought it was totally unprofessional how Whoopi was looking when Perez was on. If she doesn’t agree with what he does she should show her dissatisfaction off camera. I also think it is so rude how she shuts Sherri down all the time. She acts likes Sherri is a child and she can only speak when she is given permission. I especially was turned off today for some reason. My feelings for Whoopi were indifferent before she came on the show, but now she really annoys me. Mary’s performance was awesome…I purchased her cd today because she did so well.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
the boy is eigteen and JL is sixteen. if they have been dating for two years she was fourteen and he was sixteen when the relationship began.
if they have been dating for three years she was thirteen and he was fifteen when the relationship began.
both seem acceptable.
as far as them living together, i don’t know but i’ll reserve judgment on that because the same papers that said he was nineteen are saying they lived together. obviously these aren’t very credible sources.
December 21st, 2007 at 12:15 am
I feel like I have way to information… but FYI.. JL was not or is not living with her boyfriend. they probaly did it in her garage..lmaoooooo
December 21st, 2007 at 5:31 am
All of the reports I’ve read said they are indeed living together or have lived together.
Aileen,
I watched because I thought there were going to be fireworks with Hilton and the ladies, what a let down. Whoopi was totally rude to him, we get it she’s not interested in this type of stuff, but she’s not getting paid to sit there with a sourpuss on her face.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:49 am
Jamie Lynn’s boyfriend is 19 years old, not 18, just to get the facts straight.
Whoopi was terribly unprofessional when Perez Hilton was on, but this is not the first time she’s behaved this way to a guest.
The View has some good shows but more bad ones if I’m being honest. I found myself wishing EH was back one day just to have a change of this pathetic pace.
Barbara Walters is elderly and well preserved with all her botox and plastic surgery. She looks great for her age, but her voice is like chalk on a board. She’s too full of herself to ever retire so I’m afraid she’ll carry on, even though most of the audience seem to prefer shows she is not on. And why does she celebrate Christmas when she is Jewish?
December 21st, 2007 at 11:01 am
New Linda,
LOL! I thought David did a good job dancing. He was keeping up with the beat and he didn’t look that goofy.
December 21st, 2007 at 11:15 am
DMV records indicate he’s 18. The media is now picking up on the story…finally setting the facts straight.
below are just a few stories that have been posted online (all within the last few hours) that mention his real age.
