The View December 2nd Recap: Patricia Heaton and Jennifer Esposito
Today on The View all five hosts were present. Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, and Sherri Shepherd all went to see Tina Turner in concert last night. They talked about how great she was during the show. Sherri said that Joy’s boyfriend Steve was very into the show. Joy said that the show was the most memorable performance she has seen. (Then had to add the quip “since my wedding night.”) Whoopi talked about how great the dancers were. Joy mentioned that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were also in the crowd.
Barbara used that to segue into another plug for her 10 Most “Fascinating” People show, which includes Cruise, Will Smith, Rush Limbaugh, Miley Cyrus, Tina Fey and more. Joy makes an appearance on the show, but “not for the reason you think,” whatever that means. They showed a clip of the Tina Fey interview, where Barbara asked her about writing the original parody of The View for SNL. Tina called Barbara “the voice of reason in the crazy storm” on the show.
Fey also said in the interview that female comedians are not as rebellious as male comedians. She said that their rebellion is being a comedian in the first place. Whoopi disagreed with that, but Joy thought it was true and started naming some past male comedians who died young. She could not remember one name and Sherri offered “Bobcat Goldthwait?” Whoopi reminded her that he was still alive. Joy said that there are more eating disorders among female comedians.
The next topic was Hillary Clinton being named Secretary of State. Whoopi asked whether they can put the past behind them. Barbara noted that he appointed two other women to the National Security Team. Joy said that it was interesting that there have been three female Secretaries of State in a row, maybe because women can deal with the world better. Then someone was notified that Colin Powell was in between Albright and Rice. Elisabeth repeated what Clinton and Obama said about each other during the campaign, wanting to know which things they said were lies. Sherri said that when you are competing, you say things to win. Joy said that there were lies on the other side, too.
Elisabeth (I think) said something favorable about Obama’s reaction to what happened in Mumbai said that Joy said something I didn’t hear (from the reaction, I think it was something about her liking Obama). (My television was acting up so I missed bits and pieces). Then Elisabeth said that she is excited about the future to see what happens, but noted that Obama sounds a lot more like George Bush than he did during the campaign. Barbara said that Bush is sounding more like Obama when he said he regrets decisions made about the war.
Elisabeth complained that Obama refuses to say anything about victory in Iraq and he said in the interview with Barbara only something about improvement. Sherri made a comment that people should not just say what comes to their mind and should think before speaking. Elisabeth was saying something about the country being great, but I honestly zoned out a second and am not sure exactly what she said. Joy said that the country is not perfect and she (Elisabeth) would never say she is a perfect mother. Elisabeth said she has never said that she is a perfect mother and she never said that this country was perfect and that Joy should not put words in her mouth. Elisabeth said that people turn to the United States when things go wrong.
That is all the time to watch I had today. Today’s scheduled guests are Patricia Heaton and Jennifer Esposito.
The View, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, Barbara Walters, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Whoopi Goldberg, Patricia Heaton, Jennifer Esposito

I wish I hadn’t watched Hot Topics today! UGH! Maybe tomorrow will be better.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
Good show! I applaud Elisabeth Hasselbeck for being so firm in what she believes. Joy needs to be a little more respectful.. Good for EH for sticking up for herself.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:04 am
BO is not trying to fly the mission accomplished banner before it is time like bushed did and has recently said was one of he regrets. So sorry Eh you have to wait.
And Im also sorry EH but war (even for the best of reasons/causes) creates problems almost by definition expecialy for the civilians on whose soil the war is fought. Why does she not get that?
I am concerned that karl rove and rush yes rush limbaugh have endorsed/ like obama’s cabinet. It gives me chills a little ( I fall out if cheney did) but Obama has said he still wants to remove troops and he knows where the fight needs to be focused so I’m caustiously optomisitic about the whole thing.
I’m hating …. but is it not striking when you get a republican(PH) who can clearly express her view. Quite nice.
EH ..deepak is deep so dont try and play him. and yes mister gloden glasses( or whatever you said) is smarter than you. again i’m hating.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:11 am
Mibi says:
“And Im also sorry EH but war (even for the best of reasons/causes) creates problems almost by definition expecialy for the civilians on whose soil the war is fought. Why does she not get that?”
i think Elisabeth and republicans in general don’t want to understand that. There seems to be a disconnect or lack of empathy. If it doesn’t happen to them then it doesn’t exist.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:17 am
If I was an audience member today I think I would have left. When EH made the comparison between BO and GB they booed her. She then makes a snide comment about how she should have know since it was a New York audience. So if you disagree with her you must be from New York? How small her world must be.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:24 am
It is all about justification….. if the Iraqi government were more like us then we wouldnt have to go and kill their civilians…. you know they deserved to be killed because they had a corrupt government.
And Mibi….. talking truthful isnt hating.
I really like Patricia Heaton…. when she was saying how she campaigned for McCain I was really disappointed…. Then she continued being respectful and honest, (I didnt expect it from the way the right wing nut cases act on here) which allowed me to respect her and her views.
I agree Mibi… having a republican who can clearly express her views is quite nice.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:43 am
that was sam kinison who died in a car accident.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Glad to see that Whoopi, Sherri and JOy all went out together for a fun time at Tina’s show. What happened to little miss “sunshine”? Didn’t she want to go out and play with the grownups?
After another rant starting up with Lizard saying stuff about “what things are we supposed to believe” Obama and Clinton said during the run for president and other snarky things, the group said they are friendly/cozy again (after commercial). They said we-uns don’t know what occurs durings breaks. They are about as friendly with Lizard as I am with rush limbaugh. And THAT ain’t friendly!
I liked Patricia today even tho she is daffy enough to have backed Mccain/palin. She said she was “thrilled” the morning after the election and wanted to hug everyone because of the historic win of Obama. I also liked her hairdo and reddish color. I’ll always think of her as Raymond’s wife. Love that show!
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Whoopi makes Sherri feel bad about saying Bobcat Goldthwait instead of Sam Kinison nearly to the point of shame, while Bitsy gets to repeat the lie that Iraqi women got the vote because of American forces. Is there a fact-checker anywhere near that studio? They’ve got someone in Whoopi’s ear telling her to say that Colin Powell was in between Rice and Albright, but they can’t figure out that Elisabeth is a lying liar who lies like a rug!
And she’s got the nerve to make a nasty comment about Deepak Chopra for saying that war has caused people to be angry at America. She’s mad because America didn’t mean to make anyone angry by invading their country and killing people. So, don’t be mad at America. She’s honestly the largest idiot that has ever existed!
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
I keep TRYing to like EH because I believe she is a decent person..
BUT..there she went again..
ranting about how the US does only good for the world and blah blah blah..
As someone above said.. she must have a SMALL world.
I thought she was EDUCATED?
She has certainly retired in the self-educating dept.
I personally am constantly researching history and especially about the corruption/destruction the BUSH family has done through the years
see: http://www.prorev.com/bush2.htm
I am also VERY surprised that P Heaton is a Republican, which she has every right to be.. but ,as above said , she did make her points in a respectful manner.
The fact that she thought Gov. Palin was “picked on” is a little strange since it was not only the weird English and phrases Palin used but her disjointed sentences and lack of answers during the Kouric Interview.
In Gov. Palin’s defense, however ,I think the GOP were really shortsighted and inconsiderate to EXPECT her to be able to handle National and International issues on the SHORT notice she was given.
It just showed how disorganized the McCain Campaign was and maybe we will see her in the future since she seems to be pretty ambitious.
Getting back to the View..
SS has now totally surpassed EH in the political discussions because she is obviously taking the time to research and try to understand issues. The disgusted look on her face today was exactly what I was doing!!
Now Whoopi for Ambassador to Hungary or elsewhere..
It all sounds nice BUT IMHO..
she is just TOO impatient now.. can’t handle anyone interrupting her and is just a little too “honest” to handle the disciplined, diplomatic talk required to represent the USA.
Love Whoopi.. but she does sometimes try to monopolize the attention too much!!
Now WHY Tom Cruise is a BW “fascinating” person for the YEAR 2008.. is Way beyond me!!
Have a Great day all..
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
you know bern i am going to have to disagree with you on why eh is mad/idoit. She is mad because hannity is mad. I ran into the clip of deepak on hannity yesterday talking about the horride mumbai attacks and iraq and sean was mad so today eh is snarky. loves it.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
mibi, I think we agree that Bitsy is an idiot, so we’re good.
Also, I found it tremendously funny that as Patricia Heaton was talking about the actor who was playing someone with Tourette’s Syndrome, Bitsy couldn’t help but chirp her patented, “YES!” You just can’t make this stuff up!
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
yeah were good.
I should have said i would like to add…
no you cant make this stuff up
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Thank you very much Winnie,
for the recap that you could provide, as I didn’t see the show.
From the comments, I didn’t miss that much.
Hope everyone has a great day.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Oh ELIZABETH….
Your passion for supporting war - AT ALL COSTS is truly, truly …and America can do no wrong. There’s the black and white thinking; cannot think in nuanced terms - just like Bush, just like Palin,; the same kind of thinking that has gotten us in the mess the U.S. is in.
Fellow View Bloggers: One more time, I have written this several times over in the last year…..BITSY, IF YOU FREAKING SUPPORT THIS WAR SO DAMN MUCH WHY DOESN’T HUBBY TIM HASSELBECK ENLIST. Pat Tillman did. I WILL SAY THAT TO HER FACE SOMEDAY.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I think the women on that show promote eating disorders, weight obsession and that whole catty environment. Every woman that comes on the show, they have to comment on her appearance and that she’s a “skinny bitch” or so thin, etc. How about we not focus on that and instead focus on who she is and what she is there for?
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Gag, gag, I turned off the show when TLB started in on Barack “refuses to say anything about victory in Iraq and he said in the interview with Barbara only something about improvement”
She continues to amaze me that any one person could be that bleeping stupid. WHY is she never made to be accountable for her asinine statements?
Off to do some deep breathing!!!
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
I like Patricia Heaton alot. I knew she was a republican since a few years back when she spoke out against stem cell research and she’s part of a pro-life feminist group. That doesnt necessarily make one a republican but I took a wild guess.
I may not support her views at all but she is a smart woman who is set in her beliefs but shows respect to those who believe otherwise. As Americans that’s what we should be. Different opionions with a shared love of this country.
It was rumored when Meredith and Star left that P.Heaton was being considered for a seat on the panel…she would’ve been great. EH should take note from smart republican women like her and not hate loving idiots like Hannity. The show needs a republican who is smart and can back her statements!!!
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:55 pm
NanC Says:
“Gag, gag, I turned off the show when TLB started in on Barack “refuses to say anything about victory in Iraq and he said in the interview with Barbara only something about improvement””
MY RESPONSE: And then Barb said PE Obama said there’s been improvement in Iraq
but noooo, that was not good enough for Bits. She said “but he paused a long time before giving that sort of compliment”
“Compliment”? Is she serious??? So Bits is not concerned with lives and the overall status of the country. She’s just interested in “compliments”.
Give me a break. What a fake.
Thankfully, Sherri piped in and said what I was thinking. Sherri said “don’t you think people should be pausing before they speak?”
Then Bits said “there’s been a lot of talk about glitter glasses whats his face”, “light a bowl of incense”. She was referring to the Deepak comment. Personally, I found her comment to be insulting and in bad taste. I guess she really is following in the faux-outraged feet of Sean Hannity.
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Oh and here’s the YouTube clip of what I referenced above

December 2nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm
My God, she never quits. The election is over, we should all wish our new cabinet well because it will only mean good things for us. I don’t know about anyone else but I didn’t delight in George Bush’s record as it brought us down as a nation and now individually. So when she says she will “give him a chance” like her future is independent of the governments she is just sounding STUPID. And this “our country only helps” stuff sounds like a 5th grade essay contest winner who never heard of the JFK Assassination, the Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, IRAQ. Hello, this woman doesn’t deserve a national forum like she has been given. She is not a Republican, she is an IDIOT.
December 2nd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Elisabeth will never give PE Obama a chance. If she did she would lose her membership in the Sean Hannity fan club. Outside of the Rosie/Barbara dustup a couple weeks ago the View isn’t getting a lot of media coverage so I expect some sort of meltdown, crying jag, or all around hissy fit to be coming soon from Elisabeth.
I knew Patricia Heaton was a conservative after she got involved with the Terry Schiavo case a few years ago. I don’t agree with her point of view but she seems reasonable and articulate, in short, the opposite of Elisabeth.
I’m not surprised Elisabeth didn’t go to the Tina Turner concert. She has always struck me as a country music fan.
I agree with the poster above who questioned Tom Cruise being on Barbara’s Most Fascinating Special. He has a movie coming out this month as does Will Smith. That probably explains Tom being on the list but if you ask me Suri seems to be the most Fascinating member of that family or maybe just the most photographed.

Dr. Deepak Chopra is a well educated wise man. I can’t say the same for Hannity. In any case, I wonder what did TLB meant, when she said “he should light a bowl of incenses.”
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Red,
Great Minds Think Like Me… LOL! I just posted about TLB’s comment after watching the clip Stacee posted.
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:17 pm
@rainlillie lol
i’m glad Defamer picked it up and jezebel.com is also linking to defamer. Hopefully people will call or email ABC to complain. But i doubt Elisabeth will have to chew her words.
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
You know, Diane, you’re right! Why doesn’t he enlist? He’s clearly (according to Barbie) not doing much these days. That’s a fantastic point.
She is an ignorant and offensive woman. “Light a bowl of incenses” - that’s completely offensive.
Can they get someone with a brain to be the conservative voice? SHEESH!
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
#26 Red–
i doubt Elisabeth will have to chew her words.
No she wont be called to task for her racist remarks…. it is a show ran by republicans. EH wont be called out for her bad behavior…. they would just go to break if someone brings it up.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Hi, all! It’s been some time since I’ve had the free time to watch The View so I really rely on Winnie’s comments. Some days I’m happy she’s too busy to watch, too! :~)
But I watched today and had this insight about EH, probably really more about myself, in all honesty. I thought that her question about which of the political criticisms and comments we are to take to heart was a good point. It’s a fair question for someone who is just learning about the political field and navigating the territory.
What she did, though, was to completely discredit herself and her valid question by refusing to shut up. She’s young. She’s fairly immature AND she jams the airwaves.
I must be just like millions of other people who watch because I realized that I find that so irritating I stop listening and start reacting. I’m certainly not going to take the blame for her being irritating and obnoxious, but given that her point was valid I had to deal with why I shut down. Maybe she’ll grow out of it. I hope she doesn’t do it on my time, but I’m afraid she will if I keep watching The View.
Understanding that she can’t shut up helped me understand why she can’t grasp Obama being a man of measured words. His refusal to call the situation in Iraq a “victory”, rather an “improvement” should have told her, too, that thinking before speaking is perhaps a sign of a reasoned mind and a certain degree of maturity.
Hi, Petal!
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
s kings says: “I thought that her question about which of the political criticisms and comments we are to take to heart was a good point. It’s a fair question for someone who is just learning about the political field and navigating the territory.

ITA with you.
I was thinking about this and i think it’s interesting how we predispose ourselves to treat someone that you just can’t stand, even when as you say they make a valid point.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
S King–
I cant explain EH except to say this…. I dont think the things that she says are actually her thoughts. If you notice, she gets more “irritating and obnoxious” after she is questioned about her comment. She has to spew because she wasnt told how to answer a follow up question.
I would like to answer the question that she brought up.
I thought that her question about which of the political criticisms and comments we are to take to heart was a good point
Political campaigns are set up to show the difference between the 2 candidates. During the General Election the differences are quite clear, but during the primaries it is a little more difficult. Since the leading candidates are more alike than different, the differences must be enlarged, and made into a bigger deal than it actually is.
One might prefer Cobalt the other might prefer Indigo…. the “debate” would go on for 3 days as the talking heads all say which is the most loveliest color, and why their candidate should be elected because of their preference…. but the bottom line is they both prefer Blue.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Great points S King.
I agree; the question would be valid. However, knowing her and how selective she is with her criticism, it’s hard to take Bits seriously. She does not apply her same standard when it comes to Republicans. For example, why was she not being equally critical when it was the Republicans fighting in the primary? Namely the tension between Romney and McCain? Yet they made up, put their differences aside and Mitt went on to be a surrogate for McCain. But you did not hear one peep out of Bits, questioning whether Mitt really meant what he said.
Bits picks and chooses. It’s ok if you’re a Republican. Not when you are a Democrat.Remember her assertions on hoa man that cheats is not fit to lead the country? Or cannot be a good father? Funny, all that went out the window once she decided Mccain was “her man”.
She comes off as very immature and someone who just wants to win. I can’t take her seriously. I might if she had once questioned George Bush over the past several years. Instead she was a frenzied, non stop cheerleader.
December 3rd, 2008 at 4:54 am
With EH, I agree that she can not defend her answers as they are only Hannity sound bites.
“The mouth goes into motion before the brain ggoes into gear.”
December 3rd, 2008 at 5:14 am
Will ABC contain Elisabeth and her extremely defamatory, racist comments? What will her pea brain spew next?
Tim should enlist, that would make a statement about EH’s beliefs but……the war will not personally touch her, no way.
If TLB is truly on The View as a representative of her generation, that is such an insult to the 30’s, there are so many INTELLIGENT young ladies who actually read & do unbiased research, go find them ABC!!!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 am
EH brings in the ratings they need. Pure and simple. The more outrageous she is the higher the ratings. I don’t think she is a good representative to the 30ish community. Agreed that there are more intelligent, less high strung republican represenatives out there. And yet…..she remains.
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:01 am
When Rosie made a “racist” remark the show didn’t take her to task. Why should the standard be different for loathesome’s snake “racist” comment?
The word racist is in quotes because I don’t find either comment had racist intentions.
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Rosie did go on air and apologize for her remarks. It wasnt much of an apology but she talked about that situation in her book. In her book she pretty much said that she didnt understand why people were calling her racist and she was just making a joke so she sort of gave a half-hearted apology but then when she talked to an Asian American backstage (make up or hair or someone) she asked if she was offended and she said yes b/c ppl used to mock her like that when she was in school and THEN rosie understood why it was offensive, etc and she was sorry after that.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Dr. Deepak Chopra - I didn’t see the show. What did Elisabeth say which now generates an apology?
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
My post is in moderation due to links.
Part of what I wrote:
The show did not make Rosie apologize. That’s the point I was making.
However, as you mentioned, she offered an apology for offending. The part where you are incorrect is that she offered the half-hearted apology AFTER she spoke to the Aisan hair dresser.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Here’s the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0O_AuhP23E
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Continuation from post #40 and #41
Then many months later on her blog after an Asian poet/artist took her to task in a video blog she got it.
Here’s the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJCkHu3trKc
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Continuation from posts 40-43
And then apologized for real on her blog.
Here’s a video that captured her words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1BrehJQGzs
The kicker is that Beau Sia used the word “queer” in his video. He had no idea that was offense. So he apologized.
Lots of apologies for the use of words.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
How do you know it wasnt the show that made her apologize though? I assumed they told her backstage that they got a lot of complaints about it and that she should go out there and address it/apologize for being offensive. It is possible she did it on her own, I just assumed it was the show though..
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Obviously, we won’t know the truth. However, I don’t think the network told her to apologize or else.
December 4th, 2008 at 6:01 am
Well, Lopez, if you say it ( ” Obviously, we won’t know the truth. However, I don’t think the network told her to apologize or else. ” ) then, it is written in stone, very similar to EH, no wonder you defend her, kindred souls.
December 4th, 2008 at 6:26 am
No, I don’t feel Lopez is defending her or being a kindred soul. I think she is being fair in her assessment that it is possible Bits is apologizing on her own.
I see her point. Yes it’s possible she is apologizing on her own. We don’t know for sure if that is or is not the case. My feelings are that based on her past behavior, that she is being pressured to apologize. Perhaps enough letters came in, enough complaints were expressed and/or the article from Deepak pushed ABC producers to discuss this with her, and she in turn will address it.
I really can’t say that it was a racist commnt. I do know it was a derisive, offensive remark with a CLEAR intent to demean Mr Chopak. I’m guessing the reason was because Deepak disagreed with her idol, Sean Hannity the other night. Can’t have that!
Back to my point - she may be doing this on her own. Or the studio execs may be pressuring her. Lopez’ point was we don’t truly know for sure which it is.
