Ok, no recovery from Sherrys blunder yesteray, but interesting BW was on. Normally if they have a guest host, she is not on. I think Sherry was nervous today because she was not either listening to BW speak of posh being a spice girl or doesnt know who posh is when BW was talking about her guest list for her special show tomorrow night. Both Beckhams are on the show. BW was holding back the 10th guest for her special as a surprise. THen Sherry blurted out the question of “was a spice girl the surprise guest?” Sherry = Crapulence

Again, BW pushing her specials show and talking about her hob knobbing elbow rubbing.

Its not surprising Sherrys view on transgender/gays in her family if it did happen. THey were talking about if your son decided to put on a dress in grade school for dress up. Sherry was quite agitated and was strongly opposed to letting a little boy put on a dress for make believe. Then BW took this subject to transgenders identified in small children.. yikes… It is quite ignorant that you think you can supress gender issues in a child if it did happen. Sherrys stance is.. you can be gay but not in my home. As a mother I have a right to not allow my child to be gay in my home. Oh geeze.. I think that goes for maybe bad language in my home but not issues my child would have to deal with and not help him/her transition to a life that was not expected or hard to deal with. THats just closing a blind eye to a real issue in your family that needs to be properly understood and supported. What if her daughter was teenage, pregnant and unwed? Would she allow her daughter to wear maternity clothes or pretend its not happening until she is 18 and the child is now 2? Such closed mindedness is ludicrous.

Who knew that Whoopie got her name from friends who thought she was to gassy? I should rename my son from Kevin to Kaboom. LMAOOOO Also, did you see her genuinely smile when the subject was on her??? You dont see that often here..

Is it me or is Randy Jacksons side burns way uneven?? the left one jutted out further on his face than the right one. I couldnt stop looking.. lol

Oh well. not much today unless I missed something. We will have to wait another month for something good to comment/rant on.

  2. rainlillie Says:

Someone should explain to Sherri that people are born gay and lesbian. If a straight kid puts on a dress he’s not going to become gay. I can’t believe in 2007 people still don’t get it.

  3. Rachel Says:

    I don’t have a heck of a lot to comment on, really…

All in all, a pleasant show, all in all forgettable. A bit like bubble gum, tastes nice while you chew it, but loses its flavor after 15 minutes.

Strangely, Babs didn’t get on my nerves all that much today. Compared to the usual, anyway. Loved her gray suit, I’d totally wear that -if I could obviously afford to buy it, which I doubt-
I was surprised that Babs didn’t go all out in damage-control mode though, a lil’ something along the lines of: Yesterday, when Sherri said this, she actually meant that, isn’t that what you meant Sherri?”
Her special won’t be airing over here, dammit. I know I diss Babs a lot, but I usually watch her specials anyway. I was a little relieved to see she won’t only have entertainers on. Bill Clinton would not have been my top choice, simply because of Hillary, who has been all over the media this year, but he’s still better than Lindsay Lohan. And I definitely find Imus to be a good choice, that’s one interview I wouldn’t mind seeing. Hopefully it will find its way on YouTube.

I honestly don’t know how I feel about the boys in dresses issue. I don’t have children, so I don’t have the slightest clue on what my reaction would be.
When I was a kid, I loved dressing up, and I know I’m not an isolated case.
I guess if a boy just likes to dress up, -I’m totally speculating here- regardless on whether it’s as a princess, Darth Vador, a cowboy or a chicken, I wouldn’t see a problem. But if the boy was really focused on women’s clothing, I would likely ask myself some questions. Would I stop the kid from doing so? I honestly have no idea.

Oh, and did I hear this right? I thought Joy or Whoopi said to Sherri something about Sherri not celebrating Halloween? If it’s indeed the case, does anyone knows her reasons for not doing so? I just don’t recall her bringing it up, so either I misunderstood, or I missed that bit of the show.

And you gotta love Whoopi sometimes! “What is fascinating about the Beckhams?” Now, that is a good question, one I was asking myself, as a matter of fact.

  4. Sasha Says:

I missed today’s show, since my son had a doctor’s appt, but now I wish I hadn’t. I would have loved to hear what Sheri had to say about little boys dressing up in dresses. I’m sure her close-mindedness reared it’s ugly head again.
How can she possibly believe that if you let your son dress up in girl’s clothes, he’ll turn out gay? How can she not know that you’re born whichever way you are, and no amount of “dress up” will change that? It’s mind-boggling to me that can believe that playing dress up could “turn” her son gay. Amazing. You know, my cousin used to dress up in my grandma’s dresses and high heels all the time as a toddler (it was hilarious and adorable to see him wobble around on heels). He used to have so much fun pretending to be his grandma. How would you tell a child, “No, you can’t play that game that you love so much, because mommy’s afraid you’ll grow up gay…”?

  5. Lajet Says:

I liked Sherri. I don’t agree with her stance on boys dressing up, but she was kind in her expression of her views, and I understand her discomfort with it. EH would have been shouting about how awful, with the implication, if not outright assertion, that those who disagree are wrong (actually, I don’t know her view on this issue, but pick an issue, most any issue, and that’s how she comes across). Sherri was very clear that 1) she wouldn’t scream at her son and 2) she was saying what she wanted for her child. She didn’t condemn those who made another choice.
I also suspect that many people agree with Sherri, and that the best way to get them to change their mind (if that is someone’s goal) is to accept them where they are. I don’t accept EH’s views, because she doesn’t accept mine. But Sherri is interesting. And nothing is written in stone. People do change their minds - and people change their mind more often after discussion and hearing other ideas. Or maybe not. time will tell.

  6. Aileen Says:

    Rachel,

It is the practice of Born Again Christians and Jehovah Witnesses not to celebrate Halloween because they think dressing up as evil characters or glorifiying ghosts and goblins is still closely connected to the religion Wicca and Witchcraft.

Now you might say you can dress them up as cartoon characters or non evil characters.. but they dont.

Rach.. I also like Babs outfit as well.. i was noticing it and wondering if it would look good on me.. lol

Rain… i dont get it either..

  7. New Linda Says:

Sherri believes Halloween is a pagan holiday.

  8. Sasha Says:

I forgot to mention that my cousin who used to dress up in women’s clothes as a toddler is now a healthy, happy, normal, well-adjusted, STRAIGHT young adult.

I don’t mean to attack Sheri, or her views. I just hate ignorance, and the idea that letting your son dress up as a girl could somehow “turn” him gay is just that: ignorance. I’m more frustrated than angry, just because Sheri seems like a good, kind person, but then she makes statements like these, and you know that’s she’s just perpetuating negative stereotypes. But I suppose there’s hope, since she does seem willing to listen to other points of view.

  9. rainlillie Says:

    Sasha,
I didn’t take your post as attacking her, I saw it as you disagree with her.
My grandfather thought boys shouldn’t have long hair, because it would make them gay. I told him Jesus had long hair. He never mentioned it again.

  10. Rachel Says:

    Oh, thank you guys.

And Aileen, you already answered my other question, because I was indeed thinking, well they could dress up the kids as Mickey Mouse, or a fairy, or Whoopi Goldberg. I don’t personally get it, but religious beliefs are what they are, there is nothing to “get”.

I know Sherri used to be a Jehovah Witness, but she is now Born-Again, is that right?

Pardon my ignorance, but I understand there are different types, or groups of BA. Does Sherri belong to a specific group? I find all this both very interesting and confusing. There just seems to be so many different Christian denominations these days, -or maybe I’m just becoming more aware of it- it’s difficult to say who stands for what, since it’s so intricate.

  11. SweetLaydy Says:

Usually I just lurk but I need to respond!! Sherri NEVER stated boys dressing up in girls clothes will turn them gay. She simply stated she did NOT want HER son dressing up in girls clothes. I watched the Hot Topics again to make sure (Tivo). The idea of allowing your child to wear a dress will turn him gay is ridiculous!

I have no problem with people allowing their son to dress in girls clothes, BUT I WILL NOT allow MY son to dress up in girl clothes.

  12. New Linda Says:

    Sweetlady,

I didn’t watch the show, what did she say about transgendered children?

  13. rainlillie Says:

    Good question New Linda.
I didn’t watch the show either, I was going by some of the post above mine.

  14. kareen Says:

does anyone remember the name or where you can get the toys featured on The View particularly the stuffed animals. the one sherri was playing with? I didnt catch the name.
    Thank you!!!!!!

  16. ellyn Says:

THen Sherry blurted out the question of “was a spice girl the surprise guest?”

I think Sherry said that because BW said the secret guest is non-American and a female–that’s where the Spice Girl thing came in. She realizes that Posh is one; maybe she should have said “was ANOTHER spice girl the surprise guest?” since they fill the bill. That’s how I saw it, anyway.

  17. Aileen Says:

Hey!!! I never said that Sherry said putting your children in clothes will make them gay u traitors!!!! :-) Sherry did not got a word in after she made that statement.. she was being schooled by the remaining hosts.

On the other hand.. her statement of not allowing her son to wear girl clothes for dress up as agitated as she was does infer alot on her views of homosexuality. To be truthful.. its not what a mother wants for her child.. but something you would need to accept.

  18. Sasha Says:

Ok, here’s a simple question for all those parents that would NOT let their sons dress up in girl’s clothing:
Why? What is the reason for forbidding it?

    Just curious…

  19. Sandy Says:

I didn’t get to watch today,
So thanks Aileen, Sweet lady for the brief recap.

I don’t/didn’t have a son (although I have a grandson) I would not have had a problem had he wanted to play dress up, and put on a dress. I in no way believe that such things have anything to do with one being gay.

I have to say that I agree with Aileen, It’s not something I would want for my child, ..but I certainly would accept it, and give my child’s all the support that I could.

  20. Stacee Says:

The show was rather decent today. It seems to be less disjointed nowadays. I like that.

I enjoyed the guest host. (Maria, I think?). I loved her bracelet.

I agree Barb was not too bad today.I liked the gray color on her, she looked nice in it.

I liked the style and color Sherri had on FROM THE WAIST up. When she stood up and I saw it was a dress, I did not think the cut was flattering at all.

My views on the boy in dresses is this: If my boy wanted to put on a dress I’d allow him AT HOME. Home is where you are supposed to be you, someplace of comfort. I’d tell him “you can do so in the house, but out on the streets you must dress the way most boys dress”. Why? Because kids are CRUEL. Kids don’t have a full understanding of DNA and the intricacies of sexuality. I’d hate for my child to be a target. At least until he had the stregnth and maturity to deal with mean and cruel comments.

Randy Jackson interview was interesting. I am so glad he did not say ‘dawwg’. Ugh. That used to grate on my nerves.

I was drooling when I saw all the audience was getting. Especially the PSP bundle. Lucky them!

  21. rainlillie Says:

My sister and a few friends were born gay and lesbian and I wouldn’t want her or them any other way.
Too bad we don’t live in a tolerant society, then it wouldn’t matter much to a parent if there child were born gay.

  22. Sasha Says:

    Rainlillie said:
Too bad we don’t live in a tolerant society, then it wouldn’t matter much to a parent if there child were born gay.

I agree, Rainlillie. Now I know I have a long way to go (my son is only 15 months old) but I can say that I will accept him for whoever he grows up to be. Gay or Straight, Rich or Poor, Farmer or Doctor. I think my job as a parent is to teach him respect all people, and to try to leave this world a better place than it was before. Beyond that, it’s his life to do with what he will.

    Sasha,
That was very poetic and very beautiful! You’re off to a good start with your little one.

  24. kareen Says:

THANK YOU LINDA!!! I DONT KNOW YOU BUT YOU ARE A LOFE SAVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    GOD SPEED!!!!

  25. Sasha Says:

Thanks, Rainlillie. That means a lot to me.

  26. Dee Says:

I wonder if the special guest is Queen Sofia of Spain. Barbara attended the Queen’s award ceremony last week where Penelope Cruz and Bill Clinton received an award from the Queen. Barbara has a habit of attending events of royals and then includes them in her specials. The last one was Camilla, who got top billing that year…grrr.:(

  27. ellyn Says:

Perhaps JK Rowling? She fits, too…

  28. Dee Says:

King Juan Carlos told Chavez to shut up recently, that could be another one.

  29. New Linda Says:

Winnie, run a contest on who can guess the right name first. I’ll put up the prize ($25 via paypal).

  30. New Linda Says:

Winnie, I’m sorry I meant to email you that privately. Now I put you on the spot.

  31. SweetLaydy Says:

This frustrates me. The notion that if you don’t allow your son to wear dresses, you some how wouldn’t accept him being gay. In my opinion one has nothing to do with the other. As I stated earlier my son will NOT be wearing dresses. IFF he came to me and told me he was gay…I would without a question love him the same.

Someone asked..why I wouldn’t allow my son to wear GIRL clothes…keyword GIRLS!! It’s really that simple. Why is this hard for some to understand.

I allow my daughter to wear my lipstick when she’s playing around but I will NOT allow my son to play in my make-up. My daughter often take my bras and act like she wearing them, I find it cute. If my son did the same…I would find that completely unacceptable!

I’m sure most of you will disagree and may not even understand that’s fine. I respect everyone’s opinion..even if it differs from my own!

  32. New Linda Says:

    Sweetlady,

This conversation reminds me of one I had with a friend of mine who didn’t allow her young daughter to wear makeup. She said that make up was for women, not girls.

That’s not really an answer as to why her daughter can’t wear makeup. Okay, it’s an answer but a superficial one.

I probed and she revealed that she doesn’t allow her daughter to wear makeup because(1) boys will be attracted to her (2) she’ll want to wear sexier clothes (3) she’ll act “grown up” and be mouthy.

Saying that you won’t allow your boy to wear girl’s clothes because of the “keyword” is a superficial response.

I’m sure many parents who won’t allow their boy to wear girl clothes will permit their daughters to wear jerseys and baseball caps. Even though the “keyword” in that instance is boy.

  33. New Linda Says:

“This frustrates me. The notion that if you don’t allow your son to wear dresses, you some how wouldn’t accept him being gay.”

I understand what you mean and agree.

  34. Sasha Says:

“This frustrates me. The notion that if you don’t allow your son to wear dresses, you some how wouldn’t accept him being gay.”

Well, I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but for me it’s about a bigger issue. I agree with NewLinda that “Saying that you won’t allow your boy to wear girl’s clothes because of the “keyword” is a superficial response.”

If your little girl wanted to wear boy’s shoes, would you let her? My son’s favorite thing to do right now is play with babies and baby dolls…so should I not let him do that because dolls are “for girls”? What about if I had a little girl and her favorite toy was a tool set? Would I tell her “No, you can’t have that; it’s “for boys”? It’s just interesting to see where the line is for some people.

I’m not saying that I’m right, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong, I just genuinely want to know WHY people feel the way that they do…

  35. Sasha Says:

Ok, so I just watched the clip, and, for the record, I like Sheri a little less everyday.
“You can be transgendered only after you’re 18 and you move out of my house”?!?!?!?!?!
What? How is that a loving, supportive mother?
Now, again, since I don’t know her personally, I suppose I could have misunderstood her, but what she said, to me, seems extremely close-minded.

  36. New Linda Says:

Sasha, I just saw the clip as well. I have to agree with Aileen’s assessment that Sherri was very agitated. I’m actually surprised at how much she was.

  37. rainlillie Says:

“You can be transgendered only after you’re 18 and you move out of my house”?!?!?!?!?!

I can’t believe she said that. Sasha, I agree with you completely. I wish they would have an expert on that could educate people about LGT people. There’s a lot that we don’t understand. I wonder how a transgender teen who is in the closet would feel, after hearing
    Sherri’s insensitive statement.
I agree with you on her likability factor too.

  38. New Linda Says:

Rain, babs did try to educate her and Sherri wanted nothing to do with understanding. On this particular subject she definately seemed close-minded.

  39. rainlillie Says:

    Thanks New Linda,
I didn’t know that. I didn’t watch the show today.

  40. New Linda Says:

i didn’t either…i saw the clips on the abc website. here’s the link: http://abc.go.com/daytime/theview/index. you’ll notice how whoopi tried to give Sherri an out towards the end. When Sherri didn’t take it, Whoopi made a reference to the fact that she just wanted to clear this up so that their wouldnt be any misunderstandings (perhaps a reference to yesterday’s show)

Sherri did make a reference that she would accept her son if he was guy but that he couldn’t do certain things. Then she gave an example of how two unmarried people couldn’t sleep in the same bedroom when in her house.

But gay people can’t get married. So does that mean her son could never sleep in the same room/bed with his lifetime partner? That’s just so sad to me if that is the case.

I typed this post quickly so excuse any typos, grammar issues and so on.

  41. rainlillie Says:

Thanks for the link. BW did a good job of trying to explain things to Sherri. So did the other ladies. Whoopi made a good point about children using their imaginations and labeling children too quickly.

  42. Peaches Says:

Babs’s name-dropping in this instance was Kissinger, so that was of interest to me. Kissinger is apparently still alive and well on the party circuit, and has been reported (by Bob Woodward) as having been a basement adviser to Shrub and Cheney on Iraq. If Rosie had been there, she would have brought this up. Oh boy, would she have.

After Babs finally does leave the stage, whose names will be name-dropped instead?

Hawking her special may be boring and eat into valuable hot-topics time, but it isn’t unreasonable to expect Babs to do that. The View is her show, so of course she would feel justified in using it to promote her specials. Even if she didn’t want to, wouldn’t ABC insist? Don’t all networks cross-promote?

I find it impossible to watch any of these current hot topics without asking “what if EH were there?” Especially where Sherrie is concerned….. If EH had been there today she would have been armed to the teeth with print-outs of right-wing spin (re: Bush on Iran’s nukes program) and would have been relentless in spouting it, frantically trying and often succeeding in overtalking everyone—almost as if Hannity were watching her, grading her. Remember: She watches that show & thinks it is actually a good model of “showing both sides.” If Rosie had been there as well she would have challenged her, loud and clear. Not neat and tidy. Not debate-team perfect. But persistent. Challenging the spin. Not treating it like “just another point of view” and “all points of view are correct.” Joy would have echoed Rosie in many ways, certainly in sentiment, but would have raised an eyebrow & said, “maybe, maybe not” where she wasn’t sure she agreed on any particulars. If Babs had been inclined, and had not been afraid of offending anyone outside of the show, she would have challenged EH in her own way as well, or would have at least added some differing perspective. As for Whoopi, who knows what she would have done, how free she would have felt to challenge EH. The jury is out on that one….. Anyway, people who do buy in to the “liberal media bias” story line and who don’t have the time or don’t take the time to research things outside of Rush and Fox would have taken EH’s word for things. EH definitely is in the position of persuading voters. Because she presents her “views” like the other right-wing pundits, using their bag of verbal tics and tricks. And that’s part of the reason why Shrub “won” in 2000 and 2004. To me, it’s scary as hell the platform that EH is given on that show. Sherrie, on the other hand, came empty-handed to the topic. Thank god.

It always disturbs me greatly to hear homophobic attitudes, especially when they try to justify it by invoking religion (if I hear “we don’t hate the sinner, we just hate the sin” one more time, I will scream). It is still impossible for me to think, however, that Sherrie’s influence on these matters is as great as and will have as serious consequences as EH’s. EH would most surely take things further than Sherrie did; she would be shrieking against gay marriage as a policy, would back candidates who espouse that. Sherrie, I’m not so sure. I thought today’s discussion was a little incoherent in places, and Babs’s bringing up the transgender issue seemed to muddy the waters a little bit, though Winnie’s recap reminded me why she brought it up. And then at some point Joy is talking about men in Scotland wearing kilts…. Anyway, call me naive, but I cling to the hope that Sherrie’s attitudes are not carved in stone and do not apply to policy and laws; I still remember how she said a friend of hers convinced her she was wrong to oppose gay marriage.

  43. rainlillie Says:

“It always disturbs me greatly to hear homophobic attitudes, especially when they try to justify it by invoking religion.”

That’s one of the MANY problems I have with the GOP. I belief is God loves all and that straight people are no better and no more moral than a gay person.

  44. Real Says:

It’s sad to think that the producers would hire someone like Sherri who truly has such a limited point of view. She has traveled, and is 40 years old, but her expressions remind me of my grandmother’s neighbors who never even go to the other side of town. Again, I really believe she was brought on to make EH appear smarter, and my opinion on that grows by the day. Her vacant stares throughout most of the hot topics give her away that the elevator is stuck in the middle of the building. I just think it is a shame that producers felt that she was a great replacement for Star Jones, someone who was actually intelligent. Sure, Star made some fatal errors (bridezilla stunts), but no one could ever say that she was uneducated. Sherri’s hire does not reflect the educational strides and progress made by women in any way.

  45. rainlillie Says:

    Real,
I agree with you for the most part about Sherri. I think the public knows that she isn’t a card carrying member of Mensa. Yet the viewers expect her to know the basics. Yes, she can be funny and such, but she should bring more to the table when discussing important issues.

The excuse that she doesn’t know this or that because of her religion is lame. She’s been in this world for 40 years, that more than enough time to acquire some knowledge.

  46. Real Says:

Rain- I agree with you 100 percent. There are plenty of well educated people who have a religious orientation.

  47. New Linda Says:

Maybe we are giving Sherri too much credit. Perhaps she doesn’t know what a transgendered person is. She probably thinks it’s the same thing as being a transvestite.

  48. rainlillie Says:

I was thinking that yesterday, maybe she didn’t understand what a transgender person is. That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to have an expert on.

  49. Rachel Says:

“Her vacant stares throughout most of the hot topics give her away that the elevator is stuck in the middle of the building.”

This is one awesome expression, Real, thanks for the laugh!

I think the reason why Sherri was hired is that given her beliefs, they knew a lot of her statements would have shock value and would get ppl talking, without “compromising” the rest of the panel and the show itself.

A good way for Babs to get attention for the View, without landing her own butt in hot water.

Rosie was very controversial, and often put Babs in situations where she didn’t want to find herself. Rosie compromised “the friends of the show”, and her presence on the panel probably got Babs a fair share of hate-mail, along the lines of “How could you put that fat loud troops-hating liberal lesbian on the show?”.(NOTE: The above statement does not represent MY opinion in any way; I love Rosie, and I miss her very much. IMO, the show was at its best when she was on it; however, I assume that a fair share of viewers saw Rosie in a negative light, and, if I judge by what I’ve read on many message boards and blogs, there is a good chance that ABC received a number a viewers mail written in a nasty tone.

Sherri, on the other hand, seems to be pretty easy going and a lot less abrasive; and when she comes up with an off-the-wall statement, like she did on tuesday, she only makes herself the butt of jokes; I don’t think what she says affects the rest of the panel, or the show itself. If anything else, like you said, Real, it makes the others look smarter and more informed.
I personally don’t think Sherri is stupid, but I believe she could seriously benefit from reading something else besides US magazine, Perez Hilton’s blog, and the Bible. Not that there is something wrong with these materials, but, having been given a platform on national television, I believe it’s her responsibility to inform herself on other matters besides pop-culture, since the View debates on a large range of topics, politics and current affairs being some of them.

And though I’m sure Sherri is a really nice, genuine and compassionate person, it honestly pisses me off when I hear a statement like “I don’t need to read anything besides the Bible”. I’m not saying that Sherri’s a role model, but being on national TV, she has a certain amount of responsability, and IMO, that statement came off as very ignorant, and gave the impression that anyone can get a job on TV, regardless how ignorant and/or uneducated they are, or appear to be.

  50. Sandy Says:

I would like to just say..That a parent really never knows just exactly how they will handle a certain topic or event, until it happens.
Sherri might “think” she knows how she would handle her son being gay…or was it “transgendered until you are 18, and move out of my house”. That is because she hasn’t had to deal with that yet. When and if she did, she may find her feelings much different. She’s not so young,..but she is a young mother, as in her son is only two. She has a lot to learn, and children tend to change ones attitudes about a lot of things.
