The View February 14th: Michael Emerson and Kathleen Turner

by

michael-emerson.jpgToday on The View, Whoopi Goldberg was absent due to “a little upset stomach.” The beagle that won the Westminster Dog Show, “Uno,” came out onto the stage. (Such a cute dog!) The trainer said that he is “the people’s dog” and that is why he has gotten the kind of response that he did. He is the kind of dog that you can picture sitting on the couch in your own home. Joy said that she was upset because her dog Max was turned away from the show because he was a mixed breed. That was the inspiration for her children’s book. Barbara asked if Uno had a “love interest” and offered her own dog as an option.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck was wearing a Valentine’s Day heart-covered shirt. Joy said that she couldn’t wear it in Saudi Arabia because people are not allowed to wear red or celebrate the day. In New York City health department are handing out free condoms, using the slogan “Get Some.” Elisabeth said that the slogan should be “Get Smart” about protecting yourself. Joy said that slogan is supposed to attract people and it is not a terrible thing because it will encourage people to use condoms. Elisabeth said that it might cause young people to have sex before they are ready because they think they are safe. Barbara said that if they want to have sex they will find away and they should find a way with the condom. Sherri said that they are having sex without the condom, so it will only help. Joy said that they had condom vending machines all over France because they are admitting that they have sex.

Joy said that she doesn’t give Steve presents for Valentine’s Day, but he gave her a card and lingerie. Elisabeth thought that she gave Steve “something special” on holidays, but Joy said that is only for Jewish holidays. Elisabeth tested Tim to see if he remember Valentine’s Day and he “passed” and is taking her to dinner. Sherri joked that she woke up today and said, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Sherri.”

Joy said that the real turn-on for women is if men do chores, like the dishes. Most men would like a romantic dinner or some kind of tools.

They gave away Godiva chocolates to the audience and Elisabeth said that she heard that if you give someone chocolate you get a regular kiss, but if you give them truffles, then you get tongue.

Mark McKinnon will not stay in the McCain campaign if Barack Obama becomes the nominee because you cannot attack him the way that you could Hillary Clinton. Sherri said that any comments people make people will question whether it is a racist comment. Joy said that she has been trying to come up with a joke about Barack, but there is nothing to make fun of because he is good looking, smart, has a wife who is good looking and smart and has cute kids. Joy said that is seems like it is okay to attack a woman, but is not okay to attack a Black person. Joy said that Barack has already come out with things in his books that might be negative, like using drugs in the past. Elisabeth said that she loved his books. She added that John McCain is very inspiring in that he said that the country saved him. Joy said that it is interesting that he is campaigning as a war hero when the country elected Bush who was the complete opposite of that. Barbara said that Bush was elected because people were worried about terrorism and another attack and thought that he would keep us safe.

They talked about Roger Clemens appearance in Washington about whether he used steroids. Barbara said that it was interesting that Roger was the one that wanted the hearing to clear his name, but now either her or his trainer lied to Congress. Elisabeth said that she has always been a fan of his and hope that he didn’t use it. She said that you will always have a asterisk by your name once you are cloaked in suspicion. Sherri said that children look up to athletes and now you cannot trust anyone. Barbara said that HGH is dangerous because it can enlarge tumors you may have or other things.

Sherri asked Bill Geddie if he got her anything for Valentine’s Day and then Bill sent out four Chippendale’s dancers with flowers for each of the ladies. Sherri gave them each a dollar. It is the 30th anniversary of the Chippendale’s and their show is in Las Vegas. Everyone is the audience got a gift certificate to deLaFlowers.

Kathleen Turner appeared on the show to promote her book Send Yourself Roses. She said that whenever people forget to send her roses, she will just do it for herself. She said it is hard to find men who are age appropriate for her. She has had some “lovely evenings” with younger men, but is not sure if she is comfortable with it. Her divorce was not like The War of the Roses. She likes having the peace and quiet of her own place, but misses having someone in the next room.

She said that she does not see the point of writing a memoir and not be honest about everything, so she is very open in the book. Kathleen recorded hours of tapes and she had a writer, Gloria Feldt, who edited and organized it. She talks about her drinking problem and having rheumatoid arthritis. She said that it is difficult living with chronic pain and she learned that alcohol kills pain, but then she went to excess. When she was doing The Graduate on stage she had a meeting with the cast and told them that she was going to take a pill that is anti-alcohol so they know she isn’t drinking. Now she only has a glass of wine with dinner, but does not have the urges that she did in the past.

In her books, she talks negatively about Burt Reynolds and Nicolas Cage. Cage has come out and said that it was not true. She said that it was over 20 years ago and it is not her intention to hurt him and that is all she can say about it.

During the filming of Body Heat, everything was very intense. It was her first film and they felt like pioneers against the whole Hollywood system. After making the film she was broke and had to go back to work as a waitress and had some guest spots on soap operas. When she told people the name of the film they thought she was doing pornography.

Michael Emerson, who plays Ben Linus on Lost appeared on the show. He said that he is often cast as a villan because he looks the least like a villian. Sherri asked him about his “death stare” that his character on Lost uses and he joked that it is really just a tender look he gives someone to show them how sad he will be when they are no longer with us.

Barbara said that a main character is going to die and asked if it will be him. He said that he hopes it is not him. He revealed that “someone who the audience has gotten to know very well will not be around much longer.” He added that it is not that big of a deal on the show, because even dead characters stick around.

Before Michael did television he only did comedy on stage and “is mystified” by the characters he has been playing. He revealed that he is going to dinner with his wife for Valentine’s Day at a place that is special to them. They are also remaking her engagement ring because it is in poor shape being it was an older piece.

Sherri pointed out that she has worked with his wife, Carrie Preston, in the past on the sitcom Emeril. His wife played his mom in a flashback on Lost. He said that it was a warm feeling to see a loved one on the set and he felt “a little gooey.”

People have been having difficulty separating him from his character. In Waikiki where he lives when the show is filming, he kept running into a couple from New Zealand and the woman said that she wouldn’t watch the show anymore because his character was so dark. He was on subway recently and someone stood up and said, “That is that guy! That is that scary guy from TV!” He said that everyone turned to stare and the preacher woman on the train started to make him the subject of her sermon.

He has an upcoming movie called Ready? Ok! He plays a gay man and it also stars his wife.

    Thanks Winnie,
    Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!!!!
I didn’t get to see the show.
From the recap I’m afraid it didn’t sound that great.

    Hope that Whoopi recovers quickly.

I saw Uno yesterday on the Today show. He is a cute dog, and I agree that he does seem like a people’s dog. We have 2 dogs, that are both mixed breeds, and from a shelter. We have 2 cats as well.

I thought that all Health departments were giving free condoms for years….guess I was wrong. Or maybe it’s just the slogan that is new. I have to agree with Elisabeth, I don’t care for “get some”.
I think giving free condoms is a good idea, for many, many reasons. I don’t believe it has much to do with teens having sex. If they are going to, they will. Like Sherri says, it only helps having the condoms available,..no questions, no money.

I think it is true that people will be leery about criticizing Barak, for fear of others thinking it is meant in a racist way.
In one way, I think it would be good for our country, in a growing way. How do I explain what I mean.?..We need to get past some remarks being seen as racist.
At the same time there are racist people in our country,..VERY sadly. So I understand why some would be leery about making negative comments about Barak. The same goes the other way too. I can understand why some times people question whether a comment or someone is racist or not.
Anyway I think it’s great for our Country that an African American is running for President, and may be nominated, and maybe even our President. A great opportunity to help us all come together.

Hmm. Although I don’t think EH was very articulate (probably because she is repeating rather than having understood the issues) I do sort of (cough, cough) agree wtih EH.

I think there are kids that no matter what we do, are going to have sex. There are other kids who aren’t likely to do so. Then there is a group (including a significant number of naive girls) who are uncertain, weak, needy, or just plain confused and uncertain adolescents about what makes for manhood and womanhood. I think making condoms easily available is going to make it more likely that SOME of these kids will have sex. It makes it easier. It takes away some of the fear. It makes it harder to argue with a persistent, really attractive boy. And it makes it sound more acceptable.
I think it’s much more complicated than anyone on the show made it sound. I think it’s a matter of pays your money and make your choice. Do you want to protect the kids who are going to do it anyway from diseases, or do you want to protect those who may be pressured, encouraged, seduced, etc. who otherwise would say no.

There are lots of time this equation comes up, and generally I’m on the side of letting people be responsible for their own mistakes, rather than protecting them from their mistakes at the risk of other’s health and freedom. But we’re talking about kids (I think, although was there an age limit on who gets the condoms?). I find it more difficult.

I also (cough cough) agree with EH that the slogan is a bit much and sends the wrong message. I also agree with Joy - it’s a slogan designed to attract a certain group of kids (who really don’t care what the message is.)

  3. Stephanie Says:

Why did Joy say that EH couldnt wear that shirt in SA, whats that got to do with anything? Valentines day isnt even celebrated everywhere.. I didnt watch the show so maybe when she said it it was hilaaaarious, or maybe not….

  4. Anna Says:

“I have to agree with Elisabeth.”

    Of course.

  5. mibi Says:

I have to agree with you lajet

…but must add that to me when you talk about children you must talk about paretns and there resposibilty which is just as much if not more than soceitys responsibilty to their kids

I would also like to add that I would rather have a child start sexualy activity 6 to 12 months before they might otherwise have safely then start later unsafely

one of my professor who is a pediatrician seem to think teen pregancy has gone down slighty because (or in part because) some (some) parents are being proactive with there kid and asking for contraceptive for them. ( in some case when the kids like i do not need it) who knows

i doubt the health department would turn down a teen that came up and asked for a condom. ( if they want it then they need it)

  6. msroncon Says:

    Another summer shirt for EH

  7. Erika Says:

I found Michael Emerson to be very entertaining and thought he was the best part of the show today. I don’t watch Lost but I want to now. Did anyone notice when BW said he looked “shnooky”? I wasn’t sure what it meant- but it sounded negative. I looked up online Yiddish dictionaries and discovered shnook means gullible fool or patsy! He politely ignored the comment.

Also, I thought Joy acted like she was a defiant child when she was reprimanded by BW
for ???( I was half asleep during hot topics)and pointed at EH across the table and replied “she said!”…. I don’t know but it was funny.
