The View February 18th Recap: Bonnie Hunt, Ben Lyons, and Ben Mankiewicz

by

bonnie-huntToday on The View, all five hosts were present. The first topic was that Facebook backed off from their new terms of service due to the big backlash. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that they got a lot of complaints and maybe they were watching the show when they talked about it yesterday. Barbara Walters joked, “It was all us.” Elisabeth said it is “exceptional” that Facebook is listening to the people. Joy Behar said that they are policing themselves and that is good.

Barbara was on Regis this morning and mentioned it because she was wearing the same outfit.

Then they talked about American Idol. Barbara finally watched it and thought it was an “interesting” show but did not vote because she did not know she was supposed to. Ryan Seacrest said that the judge panel is starting to look like The View because there are two women now. Randy Jackson was offended by the comment. Joy said that she taught her basset hounds how to sing and demonstrated it. That was the only interesting part of the whole AI discussion, in my opinion.

Sherri Shepherd had a fire in her building this morning and told Jeffrey to grab all her wigs for when they had to evacuate. The fire was on a different floor, but they had to evacuate do to the smoke.

Mickey Rourke’s beloved dog Loki died at age 18. The dog saved his life when he was in despair and suicidal previously. Barbara met the dog when she interviewed him for her Oscar special. The dog was also on The View when Rourke was on the show a few weeks ago.

In the second segment, they talked about a new study by the Vatican that says that men and women sin differently. Men sin with lust and gluttony and women are more envy and pride. Barbara said that men cheat. Elisabeth said that the men act and the women just think about it. They added new sins last year. Whoopi was annoyed by that and wondered how you can suddenly write new sins. Joy said that Pope is supposed to be infallible and people will believe whatever he says. Barbara asked what they think the biggest sin it. Joy said that biggest sin is lust among priests. Elisabeth said that pedophilia is on the list of sings. Whoopi said that the biggest sin is intolerance, noting that Jesus was tolerant of all.

Joy said that religions are exclusive. Elisabeth said that Christianity is welcoming. Barbara said that the Jewish religion does not say that if you do not believe in what we say you will not go to heaven. Joy that Jews don’t believe in heaven/hell. Elisabeth said that if this life is all that we have, God help us (or something like that, I could not quite hear). Later Barbara brought up what she said and Elisabeth tried to say that is not what she meant or something and Barbara said, “well, you said it.” Then Barbara said that if you have a good and tolerable life on earth, you will not waiting to die so that you can get to heaven.

Elisabeth said that some people try to live their life like Jesus. Joy said that you don’t have to be religious to do that, just ethical. Joy said that terrorists think that for blowing people up they will get to heaven and have lots of virgins. She joked that she wonders why they think that virgins will be better at sex than Paris Hilton or something. Sherri said that is lustful to want to get to heaven just for the virgins. Whoopi said that getting to heaven and getting virgins is not about sex. Sherri asked, “What else are you going to do with the virgins?” Barbara said it is part of the reward in heaven. Joy wonders what if the virgins don’t want to do it with them? Whoopi said that they would not be there if they didn’t. Joy said that it is perverse thinking to kill people to get virgins in the afterlife. Whoopi said that extremism leads to demented to thinking, whether they are Catholic or Muslim or Jewish. Elisabeth said that going to heaven is a gift and you don’t need to earn it. Whoopi is mad that they took limbo away.

Whoopi has been on Hannity and O’Reilly. Elisabeth thought that Whoopi disarmed O’Reilly well when talking about Helen Thomas and they played a clip. Barbara thought she handled it well, even though those shows have different political views. Elisabeth said, “Not from mine!” Whoopi apologized to O’Reilly on the show for saying he was hard on Hillary Clinton, but she was mistaking comments that she remembered for ones made by Dick Morris.

Barbara will be on a taped episode of David Letterman on Friday. She said that he does a great bit about her Oscar special and she loves him.

Bonnie Hunt appeared on the show to talk about her talk show The Bonnie Hunt Show . She was on Letterman last night and told him that being a talk show host is very different than acting in a film. Bonnie said that she needs to get a more glamorous life so she has things to talk about on her show, like Barbara is always talking about. Barbara said that she has no idea what her life is like. Bonnie joked that she has to admit she never saw the show. Then Barbara said (I think?) that she has not seen Bonnie‘s show and Bonnie pretending she was getting up and leaving.

Bonnie is one of seven children and she joked that her mom was known as “sepatamom” in the old neighborhood. She said it was a Catholic family and they raised her with a lot of love and humor, but it was tough. Her mom is on her show once a week. She is in her early 80s and Bonnie said that she gave her life to her and her siblings. They played a clip of her mom on the show. Bonnie said that she loves her authenticity. Sherri loves the spoof that Bonnie does of a woman from Real Housewives. Bonnie likes to be able to do skits on the show and it gives her the opportunity to provide a higher level of intelligence (or something like that. Goodness, I am having trouble hearing/remembering today).

Elisabeth asked her about the rumor sequel to Jerry Maguire. Bonnie said that she does not know anything about it, but she loved making it and would love to do a sequel. It was the second film that she did with Tom Cruise. She had done Rain Man 10 years prior where she was the waitress that dropped the toothpicks.

I thought she was really funny in the interview. Do any of you watch her show? I might have to DVR it and see if I enjoy it.

Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz, the hosts of At the Movies, appeared on the show to talk about the Oscars and their predictions of who they think are going to win. Here are their predictions:

Mankiewicz: Supporting Actress: Marisa Tomei in Wrestler; Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin; Best Actress: Kate Winslet; Best Actor: Sean Penn; Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (he wanted The Wrestler to win, but it is not nominated); Best Director: Danny Boyle

Lyons: Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz; Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger: Best Actress: Kate Winslet; Best Actor: Mickey Rourke; Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire; Best Director: Danny Boyle

  1. marilyn Says:

I am sooooooooooooo looking forward to watching Bonnie Hunt. She is a real sweetie pie.

FYI- I do not have a laptop computer. ROGER - do you have any suggestion how I can comment and watch at the same time? ( just kidding ) Wouldn’t that be the reason more of us do not comment during the show? LOL

  2. Diane from N.J. Says:

Hey Marilyn: I have been contemplating the same thing. Can’t move the computer - so move the TV ! Call your cable company and have them put in another cable outlet ! :)

  3. Carmella Says:

Bonnie was on Letterman last night - so guessing today is actually a ‘live’ show. It feels like most are taped live - thus the irrelevant cold topics. Thank gawd this site saves me from watching. Guessing Bitsy’s clothes tanked or we’d be hearing all about it? odd. ps. YES, Canada loves Barrack.

  4. marilyn Says:

    #2 Diane-

Hey Neighbor - Great idea !!!!!!!

  5. NanW. Says:

Watching Bonnie Hunt show right now. She is interviewing Jane Kaczmarek…fun to watch two Midwest girls reminiscing about their families, as I am one, too.

Looking forward to seeing Bonnie today on The View. Maybe the hosts can learn some tips from her…enjoy your guests, ask them questions and LISTEN to their answers, learn from others, bring up and actually discuss topical subjects and laugh with others, not at them.

  6. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #1 Marilyn–

FYI- I do not have a laptop computer. ROGER - do you have any suggestion how I can comment and watch at the same time?

Mirrors…. if you angle them just right, you can watch the reflection around corners and in other rooms….. you just have to turn up the volume.

if that doesnt work…. there are always the commercial breaks….. or we can just wait until after the show for your insightful comments. ;)

  7. Roger from Ohio Says:

What show was Bonnie Hunt on before she had her own show?

  8. Roger from Ohio Says:

    Isnt that just too funny….

They “claim” to have made a difference with the facebook issue….. the change was because they talked about it on their show.

So the next “big issue” they are gonna tackle….. American Idol

  9. NanW. Says:

Rog, they are talking about AI and I blank it all out. So I checked IMDB for you and I was surprised to see that Bonnie had a series from 2002-2004 called Life with Bonnie and another talk show in 1995…who knew?

  10. Pepperbird Says:

Was falling asleep (virtually comatose)during the AI and dog chat, but then woke up with a BAM! The girls are tackling real substantive stuff with this religion/spirituality discussion! Finally worth my time and attention.

  11. Pepperbird Says:

Looking forward to the recap to sort out the religion/spirituality comments.

  12. ShannonP Says:

Mickey Rourkes dog Loki died, the one he brought on the show. That makes me sad. I so related to his comment about sometimes all you have is your dog. R.I.P. little Loki.

  13. Carmella Says:

Bonnie is hysterical. She was also in the movie, Cars - she was the hot blue babe!

Anyone sick of watching EH pout and pucker?

  14. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #13 Carmella–

Anyone sick of watching EH pout and pucker?

did you see her “put the gun to her head” when Joy was talking about Sarah Palin?

  15. Fran Says:

Bonnie was also the Mom to Steve Martin’s Dad in the Cheaper by the Dozen movies…

  16. Pepperbird Says:

Whoopi deserves some fancier duds. That striped number makes her look like she just came from jail. And she’s worn that shapeless white blouse and too-small beige vest more than a couple of times too. How about some colorful raw silk tops or crocheted sweaters for Whoopi?

  17. berndoubt Says:

Didn’t watch the show. I’ll catch up with lester over at youtube. In the meantime, I’m enjoying all of your musings! Thanks!

  18. rainlillie Says:

    ShannonP,
That’s horrible news! I’m so sorry to hear that.

  19. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #15 Fran–

Bonnie was also the Mom to Steve Martin’s Dad in the Cheaper by the Dozen movies…

That was the show that I was thinking about…. She wasnt as funny today as she normally is…. I do like her.

  20. marilyn Says:

I thought Bonnie got off to a slow start , with the interview. She seemed sleepy and annoyed. Barbara was asking and acting some weird question and Whoopi was doing her ” rolling of the eyes thing”. ( You had to see the show to know what I mean. IMO ) Things picked up after a while and the Bonnie I was looking forward to seeing finally came a live.

  21. ShannonP Says:

    “ShannonP,
That’s horrible news! I’m so sorry to hear that.”

I thought so too, he obviously cares about his dogs. Losing one of my dogs is one of my greatest fears. I just faced a scare the last two weeks with my oldest dog and I was a wreck. I know that inevitable day will come, but I don’t like to think about that. She’s my best buddy in the world. I feel bad for his loss.

  22. Hallie Says:

Apparently, Bonnie didn’t get the memo that one doesn’t speak of BW’s wealth (her reference to glamorous lifestyle). Just ask Sherri.

  23. lynn c Says:

I thought BW was a tad snippy with Bonnie- and I am shocked BW didn’t say “Read my book-AUDITION- to find out about my lifestyle!”

Bonnie’s show is pretty good. She is smart and funny, refreshing.

We all know BW isn’t “everywoman” so she can drop her little act.

Sad about little dog- he was family and well loved by MR…….

  24. Jon A. Says:

Great show! I love all the hosts especially Elisabeth! Did anyone feel that Barbara was a litel rude or obnixious to Bonnie Hunt during her interview?

  25. rainlillie Says:

    ShannonP,
May our beloved pets, live long, happy healthy lives!

  26. Julianne Says:

I lost my pug in April and it was awful. They’re the best things in the world.

#14 Roger - yes, I saw EH mock shooting herself and wished that the gun was real!

  27. ds Says:

Winnie, I have not seen much of Bonnie Hunt’s talk show, but what I have seen is good. I have always been a big fan of Bonnie Hunt, she is incredibly talented. I don’t think people realize that she is an actress as well as an accomplished writer. She wrote and directed the movie “Return to Me” starring David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. She has had some very funny, but unfortunately not so successful tv series. I have been a fan since she played the Mom in the Beethoven movies (my kids liked those movies when they were little) and also since the very funny tv series “Grand” which also starred Pamela Reed, the two had amazing chemistry together. It was a really funny show about class distinctions in a small town.

  28. gonnavent Says:

Did anyone else catch at the end how EH said “I don’t like ties, what’s the point!?”

Kinda makes you wonder if she is one of those parents who teaches their kids “There’s no such thing as second place - you must WIN, WIN, WIN!”

  29. Roger from Ohio Says:

is it just me or did Barbara look kinda “thick” in that jacket?

OMG…. someone call the snark police

  30. marthe Says:

bonnie was also in jumanji and the beethoven movies. i forgot she was on letterman last night; will have to check out youtube. i wonder if she’s been to the montana spread?

can the bits not stop scratching and wringing her hands for the 6 minutes until they go to commercial break?

my first encounter with a fundie was at age 17, when I spent a summer in austria supposedly improving my german. “If you accept jesus christ as your savior, you will go to heaven.” but what about Jan [our Jewish roommate]? she is a good person!

we drank a lot that summer. the good thing about it is that when I went to college, I couldn’t stand the domestic swill at parties, so i mostly didn’t drink in college. well, except for that bottle of kahlua I had on hand for the ice cream dinners.

ben M. kinda annoys me just cuz he looks like sean penn. Sean lives in a town that bans weekend parking near its parks to keep riff-raff out.

I guess whoopi jumped into her bus for la right after the show wrapped up. the academy must be making up for last year’s slight.

  31. marthe Says:

bonnie once told the cutest story about her niece. they were xmas shopping at a mall and bonnie told her she should win the award for the most patient child. and a couple of months later bonnie told her niece she won and sent her a trophy.

  32. Pepperbird Says:

Thanks to Winnie for your meticulous explanation of their confusing discussion on new modern sins. Apparently the Vatican decided to update the list to describe issues in the modern world. (That’s the reason they are “new,” Whoopi…duh).

These sins include genetic modification and experiments on humans; polluting the environment; causing social injustice and poverty; accumulating exaggerated levels of personal wealth; drug-dealing; abortion, pedophilia. No mention that I could find of men vs. women sin preferences, so the panelists must have made that up.

Joy, who obviously carries heavy unresolved baggage from her early background, managed to bash both the Catholic and Muslim faiths (incorrectly describing the Pope’s infallibility as well as the promise of virgins for Muslim extremists).

Cheers and admiration for all the other panelists, who sincerely considered aspects of the topic of religion, and thus revealed some fascinating but all-too-brief insights into their minds and characters.

  33. gonnavent Says:

“No mention that I could find of men vs. women sin preferences, so the panelists must have made that up.”

I think what they were referring to was the link that can be found by clicking my name.

  34. AC Says:

I only watched today because I am a huge fan of Bonnie Hunt. She is a fantastic actress, comedienne, interviewer, writer and director and she is compassionate and genuine, none of which you will see on The View. Barbara was downright rude to her, Whoopi was not even paying attention, Elizabeth wouldn’t know who Bonnie was. That left Sherri and Joy trying to conduct an interview. I’m telling you all, quit the Vapid View and switch to some fun with Bonnie. LIfe’s too short to listen to this bitchfest!

  35. berndoubt Says:

I just watched Barbara being rude to Bonnie Hunt in a clip from Huffington Post. There are very few people that exude as much genuine warmth, charm and humor as Bonnie Hunt and Barbara was a complete bitch to her. I wanted to unbuckle one of BaWa’s t-strap Mary Janes and beat her in the head with it.

I wish Bonnie would have kept going instead of returning to that horribly ugly gold couch of career death. It was nice of you to play along, Bonnie, but they’re clearly beneath you in talent and character. Just keep walkin’.

  36. Joey Says:

I love Bonnie Hunt; she has a delicious self-deprecating style of humor that includes kindness and a down to earth manner. I also like that she showcases her production team. They all seem to genuinely appreciate each other and have real friendships. In the years of watching “The View”, the only production person I’ve seen is BG and that I could have lived without (except of course Rosie and ‘Jehero’). Her compassion is obviously real…she also was an oncology nurse for ten years…and I love the retro set.

That said, what was up with BW’s attitude with her. I thought she was cold and more than a bit snotty with Bonnie and I felt a bit embarrassed for her. And what’s up about her saying she never talks about her lifestyle; she talks about it all the time…travels, parties, dining, work etc etc. BW there is a difference between lifestyle and finances.

I also loved Bonnie’s black suit, and thought it was a good choice against that wretched backdrop and bizarre lighting. I thought she looked elegant.

  37. May Says:

Just something I noticed when Bonnie entered the show, she skipped hugging EH but hugged everyone else. Saw Bonnie on Letterman last nite..he was trying to find out who she dates.
Apparantly nobody much. She is divorced. She told him one of her producers always picks on her and told her to go visit Vegas so she’d have something to talk about because she doesnt have much of a life. Dave jumped all over that of course. She kept calling him “honey” which is a bit condescending I think like you would say to a child, “honey don’t do that”.
I left today’s show when Bonnie was done.

  38. susieq Says:

Elisabeth thinks her “Christianity” is welcoming? Since when?

  39. ds Says:

Yes, Roger, I for one am completely sick of watching EH. This is why I rarely do watch anymore.

  40. Sandy Says:

    Thanks Winnie,

I didn’t see the show, busy days for me lately.

I have watched The Bonnie Hunt Show a couple of times, and enjoyed it.
It was interesting, ..through the recap…to learn more about her.

    # 20 marilyn,
Thanks for your input about the interview. :)

    # 27 ds,
I knew that Bonnie was an actress, but did not know that she was a writer as well.
    Thanks for sharing that.

interesting religious discussion. I find fascinating, all the different beliefs.

I was saddened to read about Mickey Rourke’s loss, his dog Loki. I know that it is a heartbreaking loss for him.

  41. berndoubt Says:

#37, I’m a Catholic, born and raised and I don’t feel like I’d be very welcomed by Bitsy and her rabid bunch of “Christian friends”.

  42. susieq Says:

Bern, now you and I both know there are many many reasons Elisabeth wouldn’t welcome you or me into her circle. If she did welcome us I would fire up a bong and start praising Satan hoping that would be enough to repel her.

I totally agree with Whoopi about intolerance being the biggest sin. Think about it, how many other sins are commited because of intolerance?

  43. Mary Evans Says:

Wow, I had no idea Bonnie had been an oncology nurse! I have watched her show a little and plan to more. She is warm, creative and hilarious. Reminds me of Ellen and Rosie in her warmth. To children too.

Which is something The View never addresses, even with 2 resident moms. I’ll never figure out their target audience.

BW was a total bitch to Bonnie. I would like to think that Letterman prefers Bonnie to Bawa! For BW to say she doesn’t live a glamourous life is total crap.

  44. Mary Evans Says:

Forgot to add - I thought WG was insightful about intolerance being the biggest sin to her. Might help explain her “we don’t know” attitude. And I really appreciated her call out to O’Rielly about Hillary and how she was mistaken. Not to the other panelists - it is not difficult to admit when you’re wrong and correct it.

  45. susieq Says:

I’m not surprised they didn’t discuss President Obama signing the stimulus bill in Denver yesterday.

Since Elisabeth was busy watching AI she must have missed Hannity and was unable to write down her talking points.

  46. Heather in LA Says:

Don’t forget Bonnie as Renee’s sister in Jerry McGuire! She was hilarious in that.

Barbara was a PIG again today interviewing Bonnie. How dare she? Barbara is CONSTANTLY flogging her ‘glamorous’ lifestyle - she plugged that friggin’ special three times in one show! So when she objected Bonnie joked that she hadn’t seen the view before so Barbara says well I haven’t seen your show! Except Barbara wasn’t joking. They can’t do any prep for their guests??? So lazy and superior at the same time.

There’s a great episode of the view with Rosie you can google on youtube where she talks about going to dinner at Barbara’s and how fancy it was with place cards on the table and real paintings on the wall… And Barbara gets SO defensive, that she’s not fancy at all and serves mac and cheese - lol! It goes on for some time. Why is she so defensive do you think? She’s clearly an upper east side lady that lunches with her skinny friends. After all… she doesn’t talk about attending the war protests in DC or anything of substance, just her fancy gold invitations to everything… Just own it Babs! We see right thru you.

  47. Heather in LA Says:

oh, and Babs is on Letterman friday night and Rosie right after on Ferguson - lol!

Also, Rosie is on tyra I think the 26th and 27th, Stern the 26th and Bonnie sometime next week - maybe they are taping her bonnie segment while bonnie is in ny? GMA I can’t find out when but probably next week.

  48. Erika Says:

ITA about BW being malapert to BH. If BW doesn’t discuss her lifestyle, then why did we have to hear about her Oscar interviews AGAIN in the last minute of the show!?! Even she agreed that she should just stop talking.

I remember Rosie discussing the dinner party. lol

I thought EH said something like- If this is it, then we’re all “screwed.” It was funny that she didn’t like BW repeating her terminology. ha

  49. Erika Says:

I hope Rosie’s new Stern interview will be on youtube again. I don’t have Sirius radio, but I did listen to the last one with HS and she was so open and honest and totally funny. I liked their synergy.

  50. Pepperbird Says:

Thanks, gonnavent, for alerting me to the interesting article about men vs women sin trends. They didn’t make it up; but the Pope wasn’t the one who said it either.

I agree with berndoubt in #40. Elisabeth parrots spiritual and ethical ideas. She’s sincere, but not a deep thinker yet.

Thanks to all for your feedback.

  51. Mary Evans Says:

I wonder what Kitty Kelley is working on these days. I would love for to do a tell all on Bawa.

  52. ds Says:

I just watched the BW/Bonnie clip on Huffpost. Clearly, Bonnie was making a light-hearted joke to smooth over the awkwardness created by Barbara. Barbara rewarded her with uncalled-for cattiness. This show does not deserve a lovely guest of Bonnie’s stature.

  53. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #32 Pepperbird–

Joy, who obviously carries heavy unresolved baggage from her early background, managed to bash both the Catholic and Muslim faiths (incorrectly describing the Pope’s infallibility as well as the promise of virgins for Muslim extremists).

It was explained to me by my sister (who was taught to be a catholic) that the pope is infallible when it comes to doctrine. So her statement that he can say anything is true and not bashing anyone.

They made up new sins…. sounds crazy to me too…. does that mean that before they made them a sin that pollution and drug dealing was ok in the churches eyes? We did find out that pedophilia was only “frowned upon” before they decided that it is now a sin.

  54. Julianne Says:

#34 “horribly ugly gold couch of career death.” LMAO

#41 Susieq - you and I would get along just fine

  55. berndoubt Says:

Bitsy (when Barbara said that O’Reilly and Hannity have different views): “Not from mine.” She makes me sick to my stomach.

  56. ds Says:

EH cannot seem to ever shut up, even when she knows it is not her turn to speak.

  57. Pepperbird Says:

“I wonder what Kitty Kelley is working on these days. I would love for to do a tell all on Bawa.” ITA!

I cringe every time BW mentions “Audition,” her tell-all that is supposed to show how hot she is/was. Kiss and tell is rude, and to make money off of it is even more crass.

I don’t like the way she has provoked people into crying on her interviews either.

  58. Joey Says:

Whoopi is right about extremism…it’s never okay. We see extremism in all aspects of life from religious fanaticism to some CEO’s salaries. We see it with fitness gurus to some news (?) shows.

All religions have a sordid past and only tolerance will help us negotiate the cultural divide.

That said, intolerance is not a sin; it a necessity, we need to be intolerant to the violation of human rights.

  59. susieq Says:

#41 Susieq - you and I would get along just fine

Julianne, would we get along because of the bong part or the praising Satan part? Because if it’s the Satan part I’m going to have to buy a whole new wardrobe. I’m thinking a lot of red with maybe some horned hoods. And if it’s the bong part, I’m going to have load up on chips and cookies.

  60. berndoubt Says:

Ben and Ben suck and suck. The older Ben thinks he is VERY CLEVER. He is VERY WRONG.

Whoopi got to say AGAIN that she has an Oscar. Whoopi, think of something new, please.

I guess I find Oscar talk boring. So what? Who cares?

If I cared about Oscar picks I’d look them up on-line and get an educated opinion from n actual expert, instead of these two yutzes.

Whoopi roll your eyes again and then do the Balley Girl voice, because I just can’t get enough. NOT! They should have a cage-match with Bitsy and Whoopi. We could see who would crack first…would Whoopi roll her eyes first or would Bitsy scratch her arm first. It would be fascinating. At least more fascinating than Barbara’s Oscar special.

  61. berndoubt Says:

Oh, bite me. It’s supposed to be Valley Girl and you know it!

  62. susieq Says:

“All religions have a sordid past and only tolerance will help us negotiate the cultural divide.”

How many heinous acts are commited everyday in the name of religion? Millions of people all around the world use religion as an excuse for everything from genocide to female mutilation.

Gonnavent, I did here EH say I don’t like ties. Actually, I think what she meant to say was “If you don’t beat the hell out of someone, pound them into the ground, you’re a loser, take a little time and enjoy the view.”

  63. Pepperbird Says:

    Roger,

The pope is infallible when it comes to doctrine spoken “ex cathedra,” which is a “dogma divinely revealed” to him (it’s very rare). This new sins announcement wasn’t ex cathedra from what I’ve heard.

Joy ought to understand that distinction, since she was raised Catholic. He can’t say “it’s gonna rain” and be infallible.

I think the aim of the “new sins” announcement was to get people to think about these modern issues and be urged not to participate.

  64. Aileen Says:

    #21 Shannon

Unfortunately I lost my Lab Simba a few months ago. To be truthful, I was sick and tired of the shedding and the endless love he needed due to his breed. He was always underfoot and I was his favorite. I always wondered what it would be like to not have to vacuum twice a day even though he was groomed every other week. Now, he was so sick and I was traveling for work with my mom helping me at home with him. It was costing a bundle on medicines and weekly blood tests. I didnt think I would ever spend that much money on a pet, but when you are finally presented with the reality of it, you surprise yourself. At the end, he could no longer walk which meant he could no longer go outside to relieve himself and the pain meds where no longer working. I took him again to the vet where they had no more solutions and just right then and there made the decision I had been putting off for weeks. As I tried to allude to the decision.. I totally surprised myself and choked up and could no longer speak. Tears started flowing and I wanted to be sick. Afterwards i went home worried about the boys and how they were going to react but it turned out that they had to take care of me. I had to catch a flight the next morning so I quickly packed, made dinner and went to bed. I WAS A MESS!!! I cried all night like a baby and only got 2 hours sleep before my driver came to deliver me to the airport. I didnt even shower, put on sweats and got in the car with huge sunglasses because my face was so swollen and my eyes were bleeding. I usually go from the airport straight to the client when I arrive but instead went directly to the hotel, got some cold compresses to reduce the swelling in my face and lied down and tried to sleep. I considered getting some preperation H to help out this vision of bloaty face but decided against it. I got out my expensive eye cream that is supposed to reduce puffy eyes and smeared it all over my face! That teeny wee pot of cream cost 30 bucks! but I was desperate. Now work new what had transpired the day and most likely thought I chickened out again.

Once I pulled myself up from my bra straps.. I took a shower.. got dressed.. put on the heaviest amount of makeup and went to work.

Once I arrived, all my co workers were staring at me and I stepped forward, handed them a handwritten letter telling them that Simba was gone and please do not speak of it unless you want to see a sniveling, snotty, puffy faced woman.

I did get through the day quite surprisingly well. After the day was over, I went back to my room, poured a glass of vino.. then started bawling my eyes out again.

I still have time throwing meat scraps in the garbage and when I take the garbage out, I still look down to avoid the land mines he used to leave us.

    I’m just saying…

  65. Heather in LA Says:

    Oh Aileen!

My heart goes out to you! I sometimes look into my cat’s eyes and start weeping with love when I think he may be gone in 8 years - lol!

They are wonderful, magical teachers and have earned their status in our lives.

  66. Aileen Says:

Heather.. the lesson I learned here is to slow down and appreciate what you have today and not when they are gone. You seem to be doing that with your kitty.

Now if I can only apply that to my mother..

    I’m just saying…

  67. Diane from N.J. Says:

ShannonP, Heatherin LA, and a very special hello to Aileen ~ fellow animal lovers, I understand too. We adore our yellow Labbie, Ella. No kiddies in this household, so she is our world, our light, our joy. Teaches us patience, kindness, and unconditional love.

Aileen, I so commend you for all you did for your doggie in his final days. That love will indeed come back to you, if not in this world, then in the next.

  68. susieq Says:

Aileen, I have never had to make that decision but it must have gut-wrenching. My hubby and I just picked up our cat today who was spade yesterday. There was a dog there who was getting ready to be taken back to go to sleep and my heart broke and he wasn’t even mine. I always say I hope I go before my pets (a lab and a labrauschund, and assorted kitties) which is unrealistic since I’m only 40 but honestly I think I would rather go first.

  69. Erika Says:

Aileen, soooo sad and I’m sorry for your pain. My dogs will both be 7 this year and I hate to think of them getting older. My childhood dog ran away and the other went to a farm after I moved out(? don’t all parents say that?) so, I’ve yet to go through that.

Heather, I don’t know how old your cat is, but mine is almost 18 and totally healthy. The oldest cat lived to 36, and I’m aiming for 20 more years with mine. I’ve known cats in their 20s and my sister’s friend’s cat lived to 36 which I looked up to be the oldest known (I don’t think it was the same cat). So you might have more time than you think.

  70. Aileen Says:

    Heather, Diane, Suz and Erika

Thanks so much for your kind words. I had vowed I would never own another dog due to not having to go through that again. I think what made it worse was having to make that decision and being there as well. I will spare you the gory details but it horrified me and my oldest son scolded me for not asking him to do it. 2 men prior had told to let someone else do it. I missed the warning. Woman.. this is a time when you need to listen to your men!!!!! Okay only this one time and not any other..

    I’m just saying..

  71. May Says:

Aileen, I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your lab and your heartbreak. I had to have my two favorite yorkies put down years ago when they were too old and sick to continue on. I still miss them both and considered them my family.
I complain now about having to do such special things for my 13 year old Yorkie that owns me now, her meds, fighting her fleas, but I love her dearly and when her little heart finally gives up, I’ll have lost my best pal.
You really seemed to care for your dog a lot and my belief is he(she) is playing in doggy heaven now, having a ball and pain free.

  72. susieq Says:

IMO you can tell alot about how someone treats animals and if this blog is any indication I would say everyone here qualifies a good people.

Seeing as Elisabeth doesn’t mind wolves being hunted down by a helicopter and shot dead I would say she doesn’t qualify.

  73. Mary Evans Says:

Yes, susieq, EH would not qualify. I watched her today and she didn’t seem too concerned.

I was sad to hear about Loki. It gave me chills, like the other posts here today. I live alone and had to put down my 15 year old cocker (Nikki) in 10/07 and my 15 year old kitty (Emily) just a year later. I can still tear up, just like with my parents, but eventually I got a rescue 3 year old kitty (Maggie Mae) and she is wonderful.

I like to think how much I loved them, and them me and it provides comfort and I feel fortunate.

Going off to dry my tears. :-)

  74. ShannonP Says:

I just watched a clip of Bonnie Hunt being on the show…Barbara was a complete witch. Not just a touch of witch, but full throttle witch. Who does Barbara think she is kidding? We all know she lives high society with all her socialite little friends. She HAS talked about it on the show. The way she spoke to Bonnie even proves that.
These women, especially Barbara, are so out of touch with reality. They live in their own reality, far from the real world. And it’s not just because they are rich, it’s because they are shallow and superficial. It’s scary that people from other countries watch that crap and think this is what American women are like. Think about that, if American women are represented by the images and attitudes of women on TV what other countries must think of us.

  75. susieq Says:

” but eventually I got a rescue 3 year old kitty (Maggie Mae) and she is wonderful.”

Is someone a Rod Stewart fan? I named my black lab Kennedy. Wonder what political party I belong to? LOL

  76. ShannonP Says:

Hugs to those who have lost their pets. And you are so right Susieq about how you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals.

  77. Erika Says:

Aileen, thanks for the warning. I couldn’t even go to my son’s circumcision (ha)( For some reason the hospital where he was born in Vegas didn’t do them there; he had to go to the pediatrician’s office when he was 2 weeks old and my husband went with him.) I know I’m not good with that kind of stuff.

Again, you remind me of my mom, you even look similar (are you tall too? and did you go to Catholic school? she also had a traveling job- hotel director of marketing), but you’re MUCH younger, of course. You’re a rat like us too-ha (Chinese). She said she never wanted another living thing to take care of, not even a plant, since our last family dog. Now, she has a thriving inside forest and a little, obnoxious nippy dog who only loves her that she has to carry around all the time! We always had big dogs. What’s funny is that my dad ended up the same way 20+ years after their divorce. He also had a little lap dog that only loved him that he named “Baby.” Neither seemed like the type before-ha. Maybe you’ll get a parrot that lives past 50…..just joshing.

  78. Mary Evans Says:

    Yes, Maggie Mae from RS!

I love hearing how people name their pets and why!

If I had gotten a boy kitty I was going to name him Bob. I don’t know why that tickles me but it does. LOL

  79. Erika Says:

Mary Evans, I love that song!

My son always thought the name Bob was funny for some reason. I like when animals have people names. My Boston Terrier is named Maurice after the Steve Miller song. My big dog was already named Jasmine when I got her and I decided her song is “Summer Breeze” b/c her name is mentioned in it. I know I’m totally going off-topic….

About the show…I thought it was funny when Joy grabbed Whoopi’s shirt asking if she wasn’t going to wear this to the Oscars and Whoopi just grabbed her shirt back. They seemed like little girls being playful. It was cute.

  80. susieq Says:

Mary Evans, our Labrauschund’s name is Shadow Riley, as in “life of riley”. He is so spoiled. He’s my second child. My human child isn’t as spoiled as Shadow.

  81. susieq Says:

Oh OK, if we’re talking about the show again, when Sherri said she told Jeffrey to save her wigs if there was a fire, I know she was trying to be funny but I think she was serious.

You can tell alot about a person when you ask them something like that. A few years ago a bunch of celebs were asked what they were most thankful for and everyone said things like their health, their families or similar things. Eva Mendes said she was thankful for getting the latest pricey purse. I have never liked her since.

I really do believe Sherri would choose her wigs over pictures or things like that. I can understand Whoopi saying she would grab her wallet, that makes sense, but wigs?!!

  82. Diane from N.J. Says:

My, you get people to start talking about their beloved pets…and their souls open wide up….

We named our little “Ella” after Ella Fitzgerald, because we love jazz - even if she is yellow !

Susie Q #71- You are so, so, so incredibly right….”IMO you can tell alot about how someone treats animals and if this blog is any indication I would say everyone here qualifies a good people.

Seeing as Elisabeth doesn’t mind wolves being hunted down by a helicopter and shot dead I would say she doesn’t qualify.”

    Erika - Love “Maurice”.

Mary Evans - I’ll tear up with you. Hugs.

  83. rainlillie Says:

“IMO you can tell a lot about how someone treats animals.”

I agree, my neighbor is a huge a-hole. I saw him kick his dog once. He drinks a lot too. Luckily the humane society removed the dog from his home.

On another note. Kelly , where are you?

  84. rainlillie Says:

    Aileen,
Sorry to hear about your loss. When my hubby and I first started dating, he had to get his dog of 17 years put down. It was really tough for him. Pets are such an important part of the owners lives.

  85. Aileen Says:

Thanks Rain!! You know before that awful day.. I thought most peeps were rediculous for all the fussing for weeks after a pet was lost. Now I know better and have alot of peeps to apologize to.

  86. Joey Says:

    Aileen

    Hey BFF

I am so sorry for your loss and my advice is that while you are feeling this way and when you are in the circumstance to provide a home for another lovely soul, take a wander thru a local shelter…one of the critters will grab your heart and though I’ve not quite trained mine to mix martinis, they read with me, walk with me, cuddle with me, and we’re sure one of them is trying to advise us on the stock market.

  87. gonnavent Says:

“We named our little “Ella” after Ella Fitzgerald, because we love jazz - even if she is yellow !”

HA! That’s the name Mr. Gonnavent and I have picked out for a girl - and for the same reason!

If a boy - then it will be Miles - after Miles Davis.

  88. Joey Says:

    #86 gonnavent

    so u r preggers?? !! How wonderful!!

  89. berndoubt Says:

I had a dog named Samantha when I was a kid. I thought only idiots would cry when an animal died, until she passed and I cried buckets. Really sad, highly dyfunctional part of the story to follow…sensitive viewers may want to scroll down…the dogs body was put in a plastic bag and left at the bottom of our apartment stairs for two days until my brother took it to a friend’s backyard to illegally bury it. Worst two days of my life. And no one could understand why I was upset and crying every time I had to leave the house. Seriously. I couldn’t make this stuff up, folks.

Anyhoo, now I have a great-niece whose name is Samantha. Love her, too!

  90. Sarah Says:

Oh please, oh please, oh please let them discuss during Lukewarm Topics tomorrow the Sarah Palin tax situation. Normally I feel like the less Palin is discussed (anywhere) the better, but I really want to see Bitsy’s head spin and she attempts to explain why it’s okay for Palin to not pay her taxes, but not okay for others to do the same.

  91. Heather in LA Says:

    Erika Says:

My dogs will both be 7 this year and I hate to think of them getting older… Heather, I don’t know how old your cat is, but mine is almost 18 and totally healthy. The oldest cat lived to 36, and I’m aiming for 20 more years with mine… my sister’s friend’s cat lived to 36 which I looked up to be the oldest known.

WOW! Do you live in a non-industrialized part of the world, and where can I get the food and water you are feeding your animals! That is amazing.

My baby is named Romeo (pronounced roMAYo) the Italian way ’cause I got him in Rome. he is 10 so I’m hoping he’ll go to 18. He has a totally holistic diet - I get raw meat from the butcher who grinds the whole chicken, quail or cornish hen with the bones and organs. I add a bit of organic veggie, salmon oil, cod liver oil, a raw yolk, a cooked egg white and some vitamin e. He’s doing much better since I started that. No more vaccines too. Even the Western vets admit that is not necessary every year.

    I’m a Rat too!

  92. Aileen Says:

What the frig is a RAT?!?!?!?!?!?

  93. gonnavent Says:

    “so u r preggers?? !! How wonderful!!”

    NOT YET!

  94. Roger from Ohio Says:

I guess tonight is pet stories night…..

I have 2 of them…. I guess Ill tell you the older one first….

Back when I was married, my ex brought a pup home…. I dont remember where she got him but she did…. he was a cute lil springer spaniel black with white highlights. He had a black “mask” on his face so we named him Bandit.

He was a bundle of energy, probably too much for our little apartment. When we moved into the house, he had so much room, and he used every bit of it. Use to tear up stuff when we were at work, so we started putting him out in the yard when we went to work…. he had shelter when he needed it and his chain was on the clothes line so he had the run of the back yard.
He was still touchy, never settled down and we couldnt figure out why…. One of our friends stopped by when we were at work and saw the neighbor kids were abusing Bandit…. they would tease him…. wrap him around the clothes line pole….. it was terrible.
Then at night when everyone was sleeping, he wouldnt stop barking….. those same neighbors would then call the police because the dog wouldnt stop barking.
After 4 trips from the police, I got cited and had to go to court. I had my own choice to make…. if the police had to come again, it would cost me $200 in fines and the 2nd time I would have to go to jail….. or put the dog down.
regrettably I had to put him down….. they came and got him a couple days later… I had to put him in the cage myself…. he was the quietest that he ever was…. he had that sad confused face…. it was one of the hardest thing that I had to do….. I made Vicki leave so she wouldnt have do deal with being there.

  95. Roger from Ohio Says:

we had him for like 3 years…. but only like 6 months at the new place.

  96. Aileen Says:

Hey Joey.. my BFF - I believe you are right but I have an issue with rescuing doggies here. I tried once to adopt and they sent me to this aged woman who was fostering a dog. I took a day off. went to visit this woman and didnt realize I was in an interview. Blah BLah.. 2 hours later.. it turned out that this woman was lonely and was using this interview to get peeps to visit her. I never had a chance to rescue a pup at all. Mind you i feel bad for the woman.. but lord have mercy.. I was there under false pretenses where I took a whole day to think I was doing the right thing and the next day I had to fly out for work and did not come away for a dog for my sweet boys. If you can rescue a dog in my county that did not have so much red tape.. I am there..

    i’m just saying..

  97. Erika Says:

Aileen, you would be a Rat if you’re 108 turning 109 this year. Chinese horoscope. Maybe that’s not your real age?, so you might not be a Rat….hmmmm….

Heather, I’m in SF now, but my cat is indoors here. We didn’t get him until he was 11 and he was living in a nursing home(inherited from husband’s grandma); he was really fat and was eating a diet of all canned tuna. I bought a senior formula dry food that he loved and he’s been eating only dry food ever since. Since I’m all SF now(ha), he is now eating an all organic, wheat/corn free dry food. He is water obsessed and demands fresh water in his bowl or water dripping from the tub. He’s gotten very vocal lately. They say cats try to talk to you if you communicate verbally with them. He can be annoying(ha). I think he’s so healthy b/c he’s so happy. He gets a lot of attention (demands it!) and I do talk to him and he’s very interactive. He knows how to play hide and seek too. His name is Tiger and he’s a Tiger cat. Romeo sounds like he eats a super-healthy diet!

  98. Aileen Says:

Erika.. I am sorry but LORD HAVE MERCY!! I AM NOT THAT OLD!!! Was it my crows feet. my died hair?? chit its so grown out and no grey.. I SWEAR!!I could be 25 or 28 if it wasnt for my big ol gut.. woman.. its just wrong to assume I am 109 this year.. its just mean and wrong!!

  99. Erika Says:

    LOL!

  100. ShannonP Says:

Roger, am I reading this wrong? You put a dog down because it was barking?

  101. marilyn Says:

    # Shannon : “Roger, am I reading this wrong? You put a dog down because it was barking?”

OMG… I am having a hard time with the barking dog, too !!!!!!! Why was the dog left outside, at night? The owners must have been home, from work, in the evening. I have often wondered how the owners of a barking dog seem to tolerate it….but the neighbors can not take it. Something must have been left out of this story. It was not a fun “read”, before bedtime. :-(

  102. ShannonP Says:

I guess he either didn’t see the question or chose not to answer it. I’m going with the latter because he seems to stay up on the comments pretty well.

  103. rainlillie Says:

Rog, that seems really extreme For the authorities to give you such a choice. Our dogs previous owners gave her up, because she would chew things up. DUH! that’s what puppies do. Their loss was our gain. She’s a wonderful animal. My hubby took a stray cat to the local shelter once and they put it down because it had oil on it’s fur. This, after telling us they would call us if the cat wasn’t adopted in a week.

  104. Roger from Ohio Says:

I wasnt avoiding the question….. I didnt see it until just now.

Bandit was left outside during the day time… when the neighbor parents were gone and the kids were home alone…. in the evenings when we got home he was in with us…. went with us different places….. he was given a lot of love…. but at night… when we all went to sleep….. the barking would start….. it was like when he was alone he would get scared, but it wasnt a problem until after we moved to that house.

We tried to find a new home for him but we couldnt…. my in-laws lived out in the country….. they laughed and said that is what we get for owning a dog in the city…. good church going family at that. deacons of their church.

We didnt really have a choice….. he was a good dog, but the neighborhood kids abused him and he was scared most of the time…. It still angers me.

  105. ShannonP Says:

“We didnt really have a choice….. he was a good dog, but the neighborhood kids abused him and he was scared most of the time…. It still angers me.”

You definitely did still have a choice. I’d still be angry at myself too if I did something like that to an innocent and defenseless dog.

  106. Roger from Ohio Says:

Yes Im sure there were other choices

surprise surprise you condemn something you dont know enough about. I guess I should have contacted you before I acted 15 or so years ago.

When you tell about your past should we first condemn you for your choices? I guess you cant help to bring out your meanness first without any compassion.

You havent had to make any tough choices? probably not Im sure

    Have a lovely day

  107. ShannonP Says:

If you post about something on a public board, you risk people having an opinion on it. If I “don’t know about it” it’s because I’m only going off what you yourself wrote out. I did have compassion, it just went with the poor dead dog and not the person that chose it’s death.
I think that to kill a dog because it barks is like abusing a baby because it cries. It’s what they naturally do. If you just left a baby alone it’s crib…it would cry all day probably too. I didn’t read anything in your post about it being a violent dog or out of control or anything else…just that it was left outside and barked. To borrow your words back…surprise surprise…a dog left outside that barks.

  108. Roger from Ohio Says:

Yes it was outside during the day…. unknown to us it was being abused while it was out there…… When we knew about it we did something about it… confronted the parents and they reacted by continuing to call the police.

I didnt choose its death…. the courts did….. we were forced to give up a dog that we loved

I dont have to explain to you…. you will judge me on your own as you normally do…. but expect the same judgement on your postings as well.

Someone send an email to me saying that you are just a mean person and I would do better to not respond to you……. maybe she was right.

  109. ShannonP Says:

Oh the old “someone sent me an email” defense lol. Thanks for the laugh there Roger. That is so AOL 2.0 behavior.

And you are doing what Elisabeth does when someone confronts her. Like on the wolf thing…what about all the abortions! That is exactly what you sound like on this.

If I’m a bad person because I find it wrong to put a dog down for barking, then I’m a bad person and I’ll own that (and no, from what you wrote you did it to avoid fines, they didn’t specifically order you to put the dog down).

  110. marilyn Says:

I still do not understand why the dog HAD to stay outside during the night. That seems to be the only time he could be with you, in the house.

I am not a trouble maker.

    Are we being PUNKED ?

  111. rainlillie Says:

    Rog,
was your dog labeled vicious? They will make the owner put dogs down if they think it is a threat to public safety. This happened to my friend. Her neighbor didn’t like her for whatever reason and she would call the police on her for everything from her grass not being cut to the dog barking inside the home.

Once the dog got out and ran up to the neighbor and growled at her. Again she called the police, they took the dog away. After seeing the numerous complaints the neighbor had made.

My friend had to go to court to prove that she could provide a secure home for the dog and the vet had to testify that the dog wasn’t vicious. She paid a lot of money in fines and lawyers fees to keep her dog. She told me when a neighbor is out to get you, they won’t stop.

She has since moved and the dog is doing fine. I think the problem is when you said he was put down for “barking.” I’m sure there’s more to it than that. I can see why Shannon would react the way she did…it seems extreme to put a dog down just for barking. In any case, I’m sorry for your loss.

  112. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #109 marilyn–

I still do not understand why the dog HAD to stay outside during the night.

You misunderstood he was always with us when we were home…. he was inside during the night.

    Rainlillie–

He wasnt labeled vicious, but uncontrollable.

He was inside the house when the neighbors called the police…. it got worse after I confronted him about his kids abusing my dog.

I feel for your friend that went through it as well.
Thanks for your compassion…. next time it will be a better story.

  113. Heather in LA Says:

I guess I feel that we are responsible when we take in pets as owners and if you couldn’t keep him there are other choices than death. You made it sound in your post that it wasn’t worth the $200 fines so it was easier to put him down. It is possible to train a dog not to bark, and if you discovered it was being abused which perhaps led to the barking then it was even more incumbent upon you to help him heal. That is what is upsetting. It is nowhere near the same thing as deciding when to put an animal down that is ill.

  114. williscript Says:

    Berndoubt, May, Heather, and ShannonP
I agree wholeheartedly with your posts on BW’s all-too-obvious cattiness to BH. I had all but quit watching The View (due mostly to this aging, self-promoting, balding, stiff-necked relic) but I Tivo’d this episode because I love Bonnie Hunt. How much longer is ABC going to allow her to hold the network hostage to her irrelevant drivel and hypocrisy? She constantly interrupts the other co-hosts and injects herself into every topic with her annoying “I interviewed them” comments. It’s long past time for her to retire into merciful silence. Bonnie Hunt is a class act and so very talented. And her show is one of the best and most refreshing hours to light up daytime television in many years. BW’s cutting remarks are a clear indication of her jealousy and resentment of another talent. Message to BW: Please take your dog and go away!

  115. MiamiVision Says:

Barbara Walters should have taken the advice of her dear friend, Beverly Sills, before Beverly died and made an appearance on The View and basically told her to hang it up then. But BW didn’t listen, or didn’t *hear* what Beverly meant.

So, BW is going out basically irrelevant today. Her errors on The View and her self-promotions all the time are doing her in. I think BW needs an INTERVENTION!!

She is pushing 80 this year - so perhaps she will give it up for her 80th and perhaps they won’t come back for Season 13!!

Or, perhaps BW and Bill Geddie are *grooming* Hasselbeck to take over the show -I said this quite awhile ago.

I mean it has become the EH Hour, hasn’t it? I don’t watch it anymore. I do watch a clip here and there over at Lester94111 at youtube and the last clip I saw was only one and was Whoopi’s Vermont house!

They need to get rid of BW first, then EH, then Whoopi (who I used to love BEFORE her position as moderator on The View, blech) - or perhaps get rid of this show - which is SOOOOO NOT CUTTING EDGE any longer!!

I’m still appalled that the NAACP gave The View an award………OMG
