The View February 18th Recap: Kids Themed Show

by

emily-osment.jpgToday’s episode of The View was “kids themed” because it is a holiday and the kids are home from school. The audience had lots of children in it. Whoopi Goldberg said that she is feeling better after being out sick last week.

The first topic was “baby talk” and whether you speak to children that way. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she didn’t speak to her kids that way, preferring to speak normal words. She heard that it was the higher pitch that is important so that they can hear it. Sherri Shepherd was excited to speak baby talk with her son, but doesn’t do it anymore. Joy uses baby talk with her dogs, but can’t remember what she did with her daughter. Whoopi never used baby talk with her daughter because she didn’t want her to repeat it back to her.

Joy said that some people talk too much to their children. She says they should shut up. Elisabeth said that she talks all the time to her children, like telling Taylor that we are putting the right sleeve on and then the left. Joy said it is too much and if she were the child then it would drive her crazy. Whoopi said parents often go overboard, telling the child in detail that they will be going to the opera and who they will be going with and that they don’t know what you are talking about and you should not expect them to understand everything you say.

Elisabeth said there is a book that she just read called Just Tell Me What to Say, which addresses the baby talk issue and whether to tell your child to say “sorry” to someone. The author, Betsy Brown Braun, said if you make the child say “sorry,” for hitting someone then you are telling them to lie because they might not be sorry. You should instead tell them to offer the child a ball or something to make them feel better. Whoopi said that she doesn’t recall having that much dialogue with her child and would just tell a child not to do it. She said that if a child pulls on a kitty or something, then you should gently pull their hair to let them know what it feels like. Joy said that you should take your child to a shrink if they are frequently aggressive and violent.

Sherri said that she related to the topic in the book that said that you should not make children kiss older relatives and she said that she hated that as a child when she was forced to kiss her auntie.

Sherri was almost on Hannah Montana as a security guard, but didn’t got the part. She would have been so cool with her nieces if she had gotten the part. Emily Osment from the show is on today.

Elisabeth waited three hours to see Laurie Berkner in Central Park previously and is excited that she is on the show today. Whoopi said that she is a Wiggles fan.

Joy showed off a children’s book called And Tango Makes Three about two male penguins who raise a baby penguin from an egg. The book, based on a true story about penguins at the zoo, was banned by a library in Virginia because it is too risque for children and may not be “developmentally appropriate” because it was two daddies. Whoopi said that they need to watch Animal Planet or watch March of the Penguins to understand that is how male penguins act in caring for the baby penguins. Sherri thought that it was too much for Jeffrey at his age because of the two daddies. Elisabeth said it would be a good book to answer children’s questions. Whoopi said that they were making too much out of it and that is how penguins operate and has nothing to do with sex.

Emily Osment from Hannah Montana appeared on the show. She thinks the show is so popular because kids can relate to it because the main characters on the show are not the most popular in school.

She can go places without problems and thinks the fame is “okay” and she has to accept it as part of being on the show. She first met Miley Cyrus at their audition and they hit it off right away.

Emily can sing well in real-life, but on the show she sings badly. She is turning 16 soon and has taken driver’s education. She has a small party planned for her birthday. She does not have a boyfriend. Joy said that she was too young and didn’t need a boyfriend. Emily said that her parents would like Joy.

She is the younger sister of actor Haley Joel Osment. Whoopi last saw Emily when she was two years old and she worked with Haley Joel on Bogus.

Emily is going to school online now and is doing independent study. She doesn’t feel like she is missing much not being in a regular school and is getting a great education. She just read a great series of books by Stephanie Meyer called The Twlight Saga about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. Whoopi said that they were great books and she enjoyed them too.

Laurie Berkner, a children’s music performer appeared on the show. Elisabeth joked that Grace’s first two words were “Laurie Berkner.” During the interview you could hear a child crying in the audience. Elisabeth said that the kids are saying “Enough talking, just sing!” She will have a new album out in the fall. She then performed a medley of her hits for the crowd.

The Naked Brothers Band also appeared on the show and performed “I’m Out” off their self-titled album. They said that they don’t get sick of each other. They were named when they were young and in the bathtub and started singing “We are the naked brothers band!” Their father plays their father on their show and also produces their music.

The two brothers write a lot of the music. Whoopi asked the older brother how much heartbreak he could have had to write about at 13 and he said, “You would be surprised, Whoopi.” Their mom, Polly Draper, was on 30 Something and she writes and produces their television show. The show is a mockumentary about the success of The Naked Brothers Band. Polly said it was a self-fulfilling prophecy because now they are so successful. Celebrities that have appeared on their show include Joel Madden, Phil Collins, Tony Hawk, and George Lopez.

“Elisabeth said that she talks all the time to her children,”

hahaha Gee, do ya think?? Probably interupts them too. And feeds them Fox sound bites while they are trapped in their high chair. Indoctrination starts early in EH’s household.

“During the interview you could hear a child crying in the audience. Elisabeth said that the kids are saying “Enough talking, just sing!”

Aah yes, as “the good book says” … “from the mouths of babes.”

Boy they sure did rush past the subject of Haley Joel Osment. Whatever happened to him other than that recent DUI? He was big back in the “I see dead people” day.

At least they put the camera on Polly Draper & let her say a couple of words. She was a huge back in the 30 something day. Just shows ya how fickle fame is. Sure hope Mylie Cyrus is putting her money in the bank.

Sounds like a good show to miss. Wonder if EH waves those hands around like a windmill while talking AT her children like she does on The View? :)

  3. Sandy Says:

    I didn’t see today’s show.
I think kids at home probably enjoyed it.
I know my grand daughter would have.

I have to disagree with Joy, I don’t think a parent can talk too much to their children,..age appropriate conversation of course. I feel the more you talk to your children, starting as a wee baby, the better for them.

I did talk baby talk to both my girls, however don’t recall doing so after they started talking. Also to my grand babies. It didn’t seem to hurt them any. My younger daughter talked “very” early, as well my grandson.

I think And Tango Makes Three sounds like a great book, a learning book about Penguins. (one of my favorite animals) I would have to agree with Whoopi, sounds like some are making too much out of it. So there is 2 daddies.. Young children don’t think in terms of sex, and gay. And for children that ask questions, a good time for parents to talk about such things.

I enjoyed todays show. It was a great idea to make it a show for the children. I have grandchildren and I try to keep up on their music, shows, and movies. Sooooooooo… I watched the whole hour !. I like the way “THE VIEW” is mixing up the genre of their shows, this season.
I think EH is doing a great job of toning down her “past”. She has a lot to offer to the show. Sure, she talks fast… I talk loud…Whoopie talks slow and low…..Joy has a husky voice….. Sherrie has a cheerful voice… IMO. We are all different and that is okay.

  5. ShannonP Says:

Baby talk isn’t for me either. I think if you want a kid to learn to talk, talk to her normal so she can hear the words right. Sure, sometimes I’ll have emotion in my voice, but when I hear baby talk I cringe. And I kind of agree about the talking too much thing. It’s great to talk to kids and build their vocabulary, but I want my kid to be comfortable with silence too and figuring out some things for themselves. I get annoyed when people talk too much to me, and I wouldn’t want to do that to my kid.

  6. Lajet Says:

I think that there must be a biological reason why we talk in “baby talk” to babies. Perhaps something about the pitch that catches babies ears. I don’t know what. I do remember one visit with the pediatrician. He was doing something, for some reason I was talking to my daughter (in baby talk); he asked a quesiton, and wtihout hesitation I switched from baby talk to competent adult, and then back. It was actually pretty funny! and wierd to experience it. The fact that baby talk is so common and so pervasive, across different groups and cultures, tells me there is something biolgical behind it. I also think that if it were so detrimental to babies, there would be a lot more kids and adults talking wierd.

    1. I thought today’s show was really annoying. Isn’t there enough daytime programming for children? Does the View have to cater to kids, too?

    2. Sherry’s comments about not letting her son read And Tango Makes Three made me sad. It is certainly her right as a parent to raise her child the way that she wants, but I’m sad to see that a woman of color would not get the point that as human beings, we should we teaching our children to accept people who come in all different shapes and sizes and men love men and women love women and on and on. Our differences make up the world. The make up of a family is different. Years ago; People might have had a hard time reading their children books about how some household’s only have a Mom or a Dad raising the child (due to divorce) but I think that would be acceptable today. Books like And Tango Makes Three should be encouraged and even though I think Sherry is a great comedian, she has brought The View down as a platform for educated and intelligent woman having a discussion.

And one other thing: Sherry’s chances of becoming a gay icon are as likely as Cher ever retiring!

    Right on Eddie!

Boring show turned it off after a few minutes …don’t watch anymore ..so sad i used to look forward to this hour….
hopefully it will be cancelled …

#4: “Sure, she talks fast… I talk loud…Whoopie talks slow and low…..Joy has a husky voice….. Sherrie has a cheerful voice… IMO. We are all different and that is okay.”

But “different” is not the issue here, is it? Being clear & understandable is. Since this is a chat show the ladies are on, not a sit com or a movie trying to imitate real life conversation. Jabbering fast, interrupting people to the point where many can’t understand what is being said (especially in interviews!), is unprofessional and frustrating for audiences. (IMO interrupting others is rude and uncool in ‘real life’ too.)

#7: “we should we teaching our children to accept people who come in all different shapes and sizes and men love men and women love women and on and on. Our differences make up the world.”

    Beautifully put. Thank you Eddie.

  11. Ron Says:

I saw the whole thing LIVE and was mortified that someone so short-sighted, narrow-minded, and just plain uneducated is allowed to be on TV and receive a paycheck like that. I mean, at least Hasselbeck is educated. I wrote all about it on my blog http://noagenda.wordpress.com/2008/02/18/sherri-shepherd-is-afraid-of-penguins/

    Thanks,

  12. Beverly Says:

#11 Ron, you wrote a WONDERFUL blog entry. Thanks for sharing the link. Everything you said is SO true.

When you say “Live” do you mean on the east coast or in the audience? If in the audience, was it your first time to attend? I’m curious if you experienced past View panels and your opinion about the differences. And, if there’s any opportunity during commercial breaks to speak up from the audience.

Thanks again for putting it into words …

  13. Ron Says:

Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean I was in the audience I just meant I watched it happen live as it happend and not on tape. I guess my point was that as it happened I felt my blood boil and was writing my blog entry before the segment was even finished because I was so biting mad.

  14. Beverly Says:

No problem Ron … just looking for some inside scoop :)

  15. Stephanie Says:

Blu, I know exactly how you feel. The show has become so irrelevent I am done watching it! Winnie, thanks so much for this blog, I’ll definitely be voting for you :)

  16. Sooze Says:

Has anyone here seen the show in the flesh? If so, spill, spill!
We’d love to hear all the dirt. Especially when the cameras are off! :)

    I enjoyed your blog, Ron!
