The View February 1st Recap: Julianne Moore, Toni Braxton, and The Little Mermaid

by Winnie McCarthy

julianne-moore.jpgAll the ladies on The View were wearing something red on today’s episode because it is the start of Heart Disease Awareness Month.

The first topic was whether Hillary Clinton can “control” her husband. Joy Behar said that he is uncontrollable. Elisabeth said that question presumes that he is already out of control. Whoopi said that Michelle Obama was a little provocative in the beginning of the campaign. Elisabeth said that people definitely pay attention to what the spouses say. She said that she does not agree with Hillary Clinton politically, but gives her a lot of credit for how she dealt with the situation with Monica Lewinsky. Joy said that Hillary also got flak for not leaving him, so she can’t win. Sherri said that it is harder to stay and push through after the spouse cheats. Whoopi wondered why people care one way or another. Sherri said that Hillary can’t run the country while worrying about if her man is sleeping around. Joy joked that it would be a good way to keep Bill out of the presidency.

Elisabeth said that Bill and Hillary work in tandem. Whoopi disagreed, saying that Hillary has always gone her own way and she won’t be leaning on Bill. Joy said that it is easier to control your man than it is to control Dick Cheney. Sherri said that if Hillary gets elected, it seems like it will always be a woman issue that people come back to. Whoopi said that if Barack Obama becomes president, will it always be a Black issue? Joy wondered if reporters will hold off criticizing Hillary because she is female or Barack because he is Black because they are afraid of being accused of being sexist or racist. Sherri said it was possible, because there was a period of time where reporters could not say anything against President Bush, following 9/11.

Sierra Boggess, who plays Ariel in the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid will be on the show today. Grace could not come today, so Elisabeth played a voice message from Grace to “Ariel,” where she sang part of one of the songs from the show. Joy joked, “Was that Grace or Yoko Ono?”

The next topic was a four year old girl who throws constant tantrums and weighs over 100 pounds. There is nothing medically wrong with the girl. Joy said that maybe she has a pituitary problem or has giantism. They then had a discussion about whether giantism is a word. Sherri said that if Jeffrey has a tantrum in public, it is embarrassing because people look at her like she doesn’t know how to control her child. She said that she tries to sing to him to call him down, but it doesn’t work.

Elisabeth said that it seems like tantrums come most often when she is tired rather than when she is feeling strong and able to deal with it. She said that sometimes you want to give in and give the child candy or whatever they want just so they stop the tantrum and people will stop staring. Whoopi re-told the story about how her daughter did not throw a tantrum, but rather went limp, when they were in public and Whoopi was carrying a lot of things. Whoopi revealed this time that her daughter’s shoulder was dislocated in the process of Whoopi trying to get her to move, which I don’t remember her including last time. Joy said that you should leave them where they are having the tantrum and go where you can still see them and let them work it out. Whoopi said that you should take them out of the store and tell them if they have tantrums they aren’t allowed to go out.

Julianne Moore appeared on the show. She was quoted earlier this week by a British journalist saying that she is hungry all the time because she has to be a certain size for Hollywood. Julianne said that she didn’t say those things and that you often learn more about the journalist than you do about the celebrity in articles. She said that she made some jokes about dieting and it turned into an “expose” about dieting in Hollywood. She said that there is proof that she was misquoted because the article uses the word “slender” and that is not a word that Americans use.

She said that her method for dealing with tantrums is to take them out of the situation, like Whoopi had suggested. She said that when they are very young you can hold them and tell them that you realize that you know it is really heard and you know that they are having trouble controlling themselves, so you are going to help them control themselves.

Julianne is working with Save the Children and their Valentine’s Day initiative which sells valentines designed by children to raise money. She is involved with the Save the Children United States program which does work through schools, as well as prenatal care. She said that people don’t talk about poverty in the United States, so she wants to raise awareness about it. She said that what is not being discussed in the campaigns this year enough is that the middle class is going into poverty. Save the Children is working with state governments because it is difficult to do anything federally.

Toni Braxton appeared on the show. She was diagnosed with heart disease and wants to raise awareness about how the disease affects women. She wore a dress that said, “Mmm Mmm Good” all over it because she is partnered with Campbell’s Soup. Sherri asked if they made it in a size 16. Whoopi said even if they do, maybe she shouldn’t be wearing it. To learn more about heart disease, you can go to Go Red With Campbells.

Toni’s son Diezel, who has autism, is talking in little short sentences now. His brother Denham, age 6, knows his brother is different and is good with him. She dealt with Denham’s temper tantrums the way Joy did, leaving him to work it out, while watching him from around the corner.

She had a breast cancer scare, but does not have breast cancer, despite rumors to that affect. She said that because of her form of heart disease, as well as her high blood pressure, she has to exercise and watch what she eats, as well as take medication.

Toni was in a movie called Kingdom Come with Whoopi. She said that Whoopi was great and bought her chicken and waffles. It was Toni’s first movie. Toni is in the studio now and has a new album coming out in June. It will be “old-school.” She is currently in Las Vegas doing a showgirl act.

Sierra Boggess who plays “Ariel” in the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid appeared and performed “A Part of Your World.” It is her Broadway debut and she said it is surreal. She wears shoes with rollers in them so she can move around more fluidly. To research the role she went to an aquarium in Las Vegas, where she was living, where there was a woman who acted like a mermaid.

  1. mibi Says:

re the girl who was trowing tantrums and over 100 lbs. i doubt she has gigantism (which is a word and a condition) she would be tall as well as large. she may have leptin defeciency possible or a genetic defect but I guess if they check her they looked at these things.so she may just be a hard kid to raise

  2. Erika Says:

During the tantrum discussion, did you notice when Whoopi was talking about physically removing the child and Joy retorted jokingly “Yeah, but you might disclocate their shoulder.” Whoopi looked like she totally regretted revealing that. But, it was funny- Joy’s response, not the shoulder.
Also, EH’s necklace looked like a string of cherry tomatoes.

  3. Stacee Says:

Okay, I could have sworn that Whoopi had another version of the same story. What I remember was she had her arms full of laundry and groceries when her child threw the tantrum. Before, she said she threatened to leave the child there. Today, she said she picked her up (and ended up dislocating the daughter’s shoulder). Did the story change or am I remembering it wrong? Maybe I’m thinking of a different occasion…

And dislocating a child’s shoulder? yikes.

Sherri really got caught with her foot in her mouth when she state that Clinton “threw out the race card”. When challenged, she said ‘I don’t know’. Ummm, Sherri, before parroting what you heard, it’s a good idea to double check what was said. She looked rather dumb because of that.

I lol’ed at Joys comment: “was that Grace or Yoko Ono”? :D

I enjoyed the Juliana Moore interview. I was impressed with her passion and enthusiasm in working with Save the Children.

Toni B was stunning today. She looked so pretty.
Ariel from the Little Mermaid was also pretty and an amazing singer. She seemed so sweet. I’m glad Whoopi asked her how she was able to glide around like that. I was wondering too.

Oh and I thought Sherri looked exceptionally nice today, too. Quite pretty.

  4. Lajet Says:

I have to eat my words (yuck). I didn’t see today, but according to Winnie’s terrific report, apparently EH did say something nice about HC today (she handled the ML affair well). Do you think EH reads/somehow gets information about what is said here? That’s what I get for being too global in my characterizations. :p blech

  5. Sandy Says:

As always thanks Winnie for your recap. I didn’t get to watch today.

Since I didn’t get to watch,..I’m just going to comment on what I think of some of the hosts comments.
I agree with E.H. that people do pay attention to what the spouses of the candidates say and do.
I also agree with E.H. in that Bill and Hilary work in tatum. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that though. That’s not to say that I think Hilary needs Bill, i think she could do just as well without his help.
E.H. did give Hilary a compliment today, and I wholeheartedly agree with it. I think that Hilary handled Bill’s indiscretion very well, and it took strength and courage. I’ve read and heard accounts that believe that she only stayed with him for political reasons. I don’t believe that.

About the 4 year old who weights 100 pounds and has constant tantrums…it seems as she has been medically examined for the reason and nothing has been found. I was wondering about some type of food possibly being the cause. Not so much an allergy, but something that does not agree with the child’s system. Perhaps a protein or a chemical in a certain food, something like that. It’s more the constant tantrums to me that suggest that something is interfering with the child’s system. Dr.’s probably considered this though.

Tantrums, all mothers have dealt with these, and I think each of us probably found what works for us and our child. I think each host had a valid thing to try. Obviously one thing doesn’t fit all. I found that ignoring (my older daughter especially) worked best,..at home…away from home I would take her out of the situation. It’s something that most young children go through.

I’m proud of Julianne for her work with Save The Children. There is poverty in the United States, and that is just plain sad, wrong and unbelievable. So i am so glad that she is raising awareness about it.

  6. Lajet Says:

Regarding the 100-pound child. I don’t understand how anyone can say there’s nothing medically wrong with a 100-pound 4-year old. Can you think of how much you would have to eat to be 100 pounds at 4years old! I want to throw up just thinking about it - and I’m someone who has always struggled with weight, and have several family members who qualify as obese, so it isn’t like I’m used to eating what I want and it doesn’t have matter. I can believe that the medical profession has not yet been able to understand what is going on. And I don’t think that necessarily speak ill of the medical profession - they just don’t know everything and it’s unrealistic to think they do. But I do have a problem when the medical profession, all too often, equates not knowing, with there being nothing to be found.

  7. Dana Says:

Why is ok for John Edwards and his wife to have a really tight relationship as well as Obama and Michelle. The news reports how they watch each others backs, stand up for them, help them, support them… when Bill does it for Hillary it’s a different story.

  8. mibi Says:

in defence of doctors as i am soon to be one obesity is very complex and has many causes some that are not known and some that are known that we can do nothing about (as i learned to day just today) i am sure the docotors have not fully worked up this child for all that is known to cause obesity with tanturms but it is possible that this child simply(if you can say that) been overfeed up until this point( kid lose intresat in fod aroun 1 and parents feel the kids still need to eat so they make them some parent just feed there kids bad foods) and now craves and is addicted to food which cannot be help ( once you lose your brains regulation of food intake it gone forever) .but this child has hope because they are young and with parental teaching can learn to eat heathtly and exercise. in general if there is no test because we do not know what to look for you are “fine” until we find a test or figure out that there are other way to get a certian disease that we did not know.

  9. Aileen Says:

OK.. Pigs are flying!!!!!!!!!!! guess what peeps??? you aint gonna believe it!!!! Let me give you some foreground here, remember earlier in the week (I think), chit for brains EH said ‘Hillary was as far left as you can get?’ Many of our fabulous posters made comment to the contrary who knew the history of Hillarys politcs going back to college and some of her coherts today who she rubs elbows with (which is another discussion). Well guess who is backing Hillary and offered to campaign for her if McCain gets the nomination????? Did ya guess yet? Not normally one of my favorite peeps I must say, but.. now I have a new found respect for this adams apple wearing female…. ooooopsss.. I think I gave it away…….

ANN COULTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OOOOHHHH MMMMMYYYYY GODDDDDD!!! Here is the link on Hannity & Colmes..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2JoSo17Azk
Pigs are flying peeps and maybe the lady in drag isnt so stupid after all and just writes books for profits..
    THE FAT LADY HAS SUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I’m just saying…….

  10. Sandy Says:

    mibi,
Thanks for your input about the child, I was interested in what you had to say. Also Congratulations on becoming a doctor. We can always use more doctors.
When I first read the recap about this child, the weight part of the problem didn’t really hit me until I read another comment.

  11. Sandy Says:

    Aileen,
I read that too. A lot of Republicans just don’t think that McCain is conservative enough. I like him though, and shhh. don’t tell anyone, but I like Hilary too. :)
I have my suspicious though as to why Ann Coulter is saying this. Could it be that she is just trying to get Republicans to back Romney????

  12. Mary Says:

Kudos to ya Aileen. Very enjoyable indeed.

  13. Stacee Says:

    Double kudos to you, Aileen.

  14. Aileen Says:

MWAH????? I believe I am responding to EH earlier statement on ‘Hillary being far right’ stated on the view this week. I believe my post constitutes ‘VIEW’ discussions and most certainly is on topic.

Sandy - Good point about your suspicions… hmmmm.. makes you stop and think… Its what I love about this site. Many views and angles you may not of thought of.

Mary - glad you liked it

  15. Tootsie Says:

    #14 Aileen, and everyone:
I thought the comments policy was only about not posting nasty personal attacks against the posters. I didn’t know it said you could not go off topic. Could Winnie clarify this. I thought Aileen your comment was fine, and funny as hell.

  16. Winnie McCarthy Says:

I deemed Aileen’s comment to be fine as well.

FYI: The comment policy is here: http://www.watchingtheview.com/comment-policy/

  17. Tootsie Says:

Winnie, that’s a new comments policy isn’t it? the first one you posted a while back only mentioned not attacking posters personally. This one looks like an expanded version. When was it put up? If you update your policies it would be appreciated if you would tell us. so we can keep abreast as to updated policies.

  18. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Sure, I will be happy to let you all know if there are any other changes to the policy.

  19. Sandy Says:

I think the comment policy is VERY just.
I think that keeping the comments on topic of the View helps to keep it from going off in a direction that I feel most posters wouldn’t like. Not that anyone said they didn’t like the policy, I’m just giving my opinion.

I read somewhere today that Winnie is very fair, and a trooper. I agree 110%, and I think that most of the posters here agree with that.
This is a great blog, that I really enjoy, as I do the commenters here. I don’t agree with some of them, but I have respect for them and their opinions.
