The View February 25th Recap: Hot Topics
Today on The View they started the show talking about the Oscars. Sherri Shepherd said that she was kind of bored because she didn’t know any of the people. Barbara Walters joked that she remembers the first Oscars 80 years ago. She said that there were few people to get excited about this year and no one really knows this year’s main winners. She added that the movies were so dark and that there was “no Titanic.”
Elisabeth Hasselbeck said to Barbara “Thank goodness for your special” or she would have been bored all night. She said that dresses this year were all too safe. Barbara said that she hated her dress on her special. (I reviewed her special here). Barbara talked about the people on her special and got two of their names wrong. (”Aileen” Page (it was Ellen) and “Jennifer” Williams (it was Vanessa). Barbara revealed that it was Bill Geddie’s daughter who broke speed records to bring a guitar to the interview for Ellen Page to sing the song from the movie.
Sherri said that the Oscar montage that showed all the hosts of the Oscars didn’t include Whoopi. Whoopi said that they left out Steve Martin, too. Barbara said that it was supposed to be a montage of great Oscar moments and they did show her winning her Oscar. Sherri asked if she pissed someone off at the Oscars and Whoopi said “undoubtedly I did.” The hosts all expressed how they thought that she was great host and that she was the first female host, the first Black host, and the first Oscar winner to host. She said that their comments made up for the slight. Whoopi looked obviously upset about the whole thing and got out of her chair and gave each of the ladies a hug and a kiss of thanks.
Whoopi said that she has her Oscar on her bookshelf so when she enters her house she sees him. She said that it is entrance into a small group of people and was glad that best actress Marion Cotillard was so excited. She and Joy both said that they thought it was great that Javier Bardem gave his speech in Spanish for his mother.
Mike Huckabee was on Saturday Night Live and they showed the clip of his appearance. He poked fun at himself by playing on the idea that he doesn’t know when to get out of the race by not leaving the interview on Weekend Update when it was over. Joy thought that they should give him a spot on SNL because he won’t win the nomination. Barbara said that it is so different now that the candidates can be on TV shows like that, starting with Bill Clinton on Arsenio Hall. Joy said that it is good when a candidate can show a sense of humor because it shows good mental health.
Barbara then said it is like her Barack Obama story and asked if she had told it before. All the ladies said she hadn’t. (In reality she has told the story at least two times before).
Ralph Nader is running for president again. Joy said that she finds him sexy. Whoopi looked a bit shocked and flicked some water on her to cool her off. Joy said that he is the most articulate of any of the candidates on his position. Sherri said that he didn’t get the memo that it is a bad time for white people to run as a Democrat. Barbara said that he is running as an Independent. Elisabeth clarified Sherri’s point for her that she meant that Nader would need to be taking votes from Democrats. Barbara added that she thought that Barack Obama is very attractive. Whoopi said that they are all hot and she wants to do them all. Joy said that she still thinks that Bill Clinton is the best looking of them all and that his big head drives her wild. Barbara asked her what happened to her last night, saying that she couldn’t tell if she got some or she didn’t.
They next talked about how things have gotten a bit more contentious in the democratic campaign. Hillary Clinton gave a speech that somewhat mocked Obama and his thoughts about change and hope, saying “I could stand up here and say ‘Let’s just get everybody together, let’s get unified, the sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect.” Sherri said that Hillary is hoping for a miracle too, because she thinks she is going to get Texas and Ohio handed to her.
Although Hillary was nice to Barack at the last debate, now she is angry about a mailer that the Obama campaign sent out about her position on NAFTA. Barbara said that she wasn’t a senator then, but her husband was president. Whoopi said that sometimes you ask your husband if he read something carefully and he says yes and you believe him. Elisabeth said that Hillary is in a tricky position because she wants to take credit for things that happened under her husband’s administration, but not for other things. Barbara said that it is amazing how far she has fallen during the campaign. Joy said that they have mismanaged her campaign and she was a bit too grandiose in the beginning.
Angelina Jolie showed up at the Independent Spirit Awards, very obviously pregnant. She and Brad Pitt have not yet announced the pregnancy. Do they have to come out and make an announcement? Elisabeth said that once the child comes out it will be the object of every photographer’s gaze and now it is in the safest place for social exposure for the child. Joy joked that maybe Angelina is waiting to see if an African family will adopt her child. Elisabeth said the new trend is “pregnarexia” where pregnant actresses stay really slender. Whoopi said that maybe celebrities don’t want to say anything because they don’t want to jinx it.
They showed a segment called, “Best of Toy Fair,” where Sherri and Whoopi went around the Toy Fair and looked at the hot new toys.
Flybar high-performance pogo stick
Kota the Triceratops from Playschool
Air hogs helicopters from Spinmaster
Longefellows princess soft toys
Underwater videotaping goggles by Liquid Image
Whoopi said that her favorite toy is Find-It, which is a tube with beads in it that also contains small objects that the person playing the game has to find. Sherri’s favorite was the pogo stick and then someone came out and demonstrated it on the stage.

I didn’t watch the Oscars, but I found BW too assumptive in her belief that no one knew the winners. I’ve thought Tilda Swinton is an amazing actor ever since I saw her in “Orlando” where she switched from male to female throughout the movie.
I want a Flybar Pogo!!!

Everyone who took off their belt, and, in a murderous impulse, attempted to reach through the TV to strangle Babs with it, to put an end to her rambling -AGAIN- about her *@%#&~! Oscar special, please stand up.
February 25th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
LOL! Rachel- I stand up! She totally repeated herself about that Juno song and Ellen(”Aileen”) Page.
February 25th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
OK, now that I got to spit out my kind words for Babs, I feel relieved.
But still. Seriously. How much has she been talking about her special in the last week and a bit? I’d say at least the equivalent of three whole HT segments. At least. Enough already with the pimping, and STFU Babs. Urgh! Drivin’ me nuts!
OK, now I am DONE. I think.
I watched the Oscars. I always watch the Oscars. I keep claiming that I don’t give a crap about them, that Hollywood is just one big money crap-mass-producing machine, but I don’t think I’ve missed one single ceremony in the last 15 years, LoL!
And I thought this year’s was pretty good, and wasn’t a five hours marathon, for a change, which, for me, is a positive. Plus I have a humongous crush on Jon Stewart, so having him hosting it was a mega-positive!:)
And I didn’t think there were so many unknown actors. ITA with Erika, I too was surprised when Babs said that. I admit, I didn’t know Marion Cottillard, nor the “Atonement” girl, but it didn’t spoil it for me at all. And I like it when an underdog wins, so for me it was all good. I was super-happy for the “Once” couple, who made that little indie musical with literally small change and a prayer!
I realize this is a View board, and that I’m totally OT, I promise to shut up about it for the rest of the year after this, but I just want to let out this little Oscar-related rant out, and then I’m done!
Sometimes I wish they’d do like the Grammys and have sort of a “best new artist” category, one for guys, one for girls.
I thought there were too many actors -moreso actresses, actually- whose body of work was basically the one film they were nominated for, and that kind of bugs me, because I don’t think you can judge someone’s talent based on one performance. Like last year, honestly, I was a bit pissed that the Oscar went to Jennifer Hudson. No disrespect, but I just don’t consider her as an actress. To me, she’s a singer who was handed a role that fit her like a glove. She’s a great singer, but I doubt she’ll ever win an acting award again. JMO.
OK, sorry about that. I still have a little bit of Oscar fever, but it’ll be gone tomorrow. Who can blame me for loving a show where they put George Clooney and Jon Stewart in bed together (what would I have not given to be sandwiched between those two!)
But anyway, I think Babs b!tching about not knowing the winners had to do with the fact that she’s a jet-set lovin’ bleepin’ elitist who has no clue who’s who unless they’re some kind of corporate mega-star who gets paid millions to slip into a fat suit. Sorry, today, I’m in a “Go for Babs’ jugular” kinda mood.
I don’t understand why they made such a big deal about the montage not including Whoopi’s hosting duties; it was a short ceremony, if you judge by the usual standards (I’ve seen Oscar nights lasting 5 hours +), and with the best will in the world, they couldn’t show everyone; and they did show Whoopi winning her Oscar, so I don’t get what that fuss was about.
I already stated my thoughts about Mike Huckabee on SNL, (he was awesome, damn him, why can’t he make it easy for me to hate him, as logic would dictate? Tss, Mike!)
I agree with Joy though: they should give him a regular spot on SNL, cos he certainly has comic talent. He should get together with Rosie, I’m sure they could come up with one hell of a terrific comedy routine!
I was quite surprised by Sherri, and in a good way too! Girl seems to have done her homework, she was quite eloquent and made total sense during the political discussion today. And no boob jokes. I could potentially have a change of heart for Sherri, should she continue in that direction, coming across as well-informed, and adding substantially to the discussion. Plus I thought she looked great today; I think the wig she wore is the one that suits her the best, and I loved her outfit too.
I liked Hillary’s little rant (maybe she should get a comedy routine together with Huckabee, too should both of them bite the dust, which is what it’s starting to look like); she made me laugh, but I don’t know if that will do her any good. I don’t think it was mean-spirited, but it might rub a lot of ppl the wrong way (starting with Barrack).
I didn’t pay much attention to the Brangelina baby factory, Pregnant in Hollywood bit, because I really don’t care.
And I thought the toys segment was cute, although didn’t Whoopi say the audience would get some of the toys? What did the audience get exactly?
I liked that Sherri quickly squeezed in the fact that Fred, the pogo-stick dude, was off to Hollywood to become a stunt-man, I thought it was sweet.
OMG, I’m starting to like Sherri, I’m having to fight not to like Huckabee, what the hell is going on?
Oh, one final thing. Who knew that Javier Bardem was such a HOTTIE? I had no idea, but WOW. Just WOW.
Ok, I’m off to take a cold shower now.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Rachael- LOL and enjoying your whole rant and fun comments. I totally agree with you and you saved me an hour of finger pecking on the keyboard.
Winnie- Thanks for all the updates. You do a great job !

I did finally get to see the view today, ..and I enjoyed it, ..except for as others have already indicated. I have heard enough about Barb’s’s special.
which I didn’t watch, nor the Oscar’s.
I probably would have watched the Oscar’s but I had company.
I don’t like Huckabee as a Presidential candidate, but as a person I think he has a great personality and many talents.
I also liked Hilary’s little rant about Obama, I don’t know for sure if she meant it to be funny, ..but I sure thought it was, and i did laugh.
I also agree that Sherri was much more on top of things today. Good for her. Of course I’d like her anyway.
And I did like the toy segment.
Does this sound like Rachel’s comment?
I think it does, sorry, but when you agree, you agree.

I think it is ridiculous that Sherri and EH said they were bored during the Oscars because people who they know well didn’t win the top actor awards. How absurd. As if the Oscars are just meant to be a big People Magazine spread for their pleasure. I think the show was wonderful. The folks who won all gave amazing performances in their respective films. How bizarre that these ladies think it should be some kind of an American popularity contest.
February 25th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Well said Meredith!
The only thing that bothered me about the Oscars was how padded with montages they were. Montages mostly consisting of previous acceptance speeches, but then they wouldn’t let any of the winners give finish their own speeches… Very backward. But still fun. It’s no fun if the only people who win are already famous and acclaimed as hell.
February 25th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Meredith;
I agree with your points. It shows a lack of sophistication on Sherri’s and EH’s part.
February 25th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I really believe the montages were presented because they had been preepared in case the writer’s strike interfered with the Oscar Show.
Every year we all complain about the Oscars…too long, boring, don’t know the winners…but we all watch! My complaint this year was about the nominated music. The only song that was award worthy was the song that won. Just shows the rotten condition of music in the country the past few years.
Jon Stewart was my reason for watching and he didn’t disappoint me at all.
February 25th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I also wanted to mention it was really weird that Whoopi wasn’t in the montage featuring Oscar hosts through the years since she has hosted 3 times and always did a great job with many memorable moments. It was also weird in the montage on those in the industry who passed away this year that they left out Brad Renfro who died of a drug overdose just a week or so befor Heath Ledger. Why would they leave him out? That seems so odd to me. Any ideas out there? (I’m such a sucker and I always get so choked up during the footage of all the people in the industry who died in the past year.)

Ok it makes me sad that Whoops was not given the propa props for her hosting experiences as well as her movie s
tuff. I am really sorry she was not mentioned once.. That was a major oversight on their part. Btw.. they didnt leave out Steve Martin.. I did see a flash of him.. WTG for the huckaturd on SNL.. Ok I am not a fan either.. but if the man can be entertaining and just have a laugh.. good for him.. and wtg..
OMG .. where cares who finds what candidate attractive??? I mean come on paalease.. you have no idea if his stuff measures up to hand.. I’m just saying…..
I am not commenting angelina stuff…
ok before comments

Ok i am not gonna read until i get real time posting.. sheesh.. I feel like a step child not due to winnies fault.. but my own failure to post.. in time…
February 26th, 2008 at 3:07 am
I’m sick of the same old people winning Oscars, it was refreshing to see some new faces who obviously won the awards on merit, rather than because of “who they are”. Also, the non-Americans make better speeches, with more spunk, wit, class and don’t burst into pathetic tears when they win.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:20 am
I love George Clooney but am I the only one who thought he looked a bit silly with that young girlfriend. This is the first time I have thought “No, George - she’s too young and you look silly”.
February 26th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I have always thought the actors/actresses from outside the US should have given us a run for or money. Too many times we see a popular US actress get an OSCAR for the wrong reasons (IMO). I also include young teens who have been nominated for a popular movie rather than having developed acting chops in a body of work.
I could accept that SS and EH found OSCAR boring, they aren’t into the serious movies that were the nominees, but for EH to say to BW “thank goodness for your special” induced my gag reflex. Could that nose be any browner Bits?
Whoop being a host 4 times and not being added probably was hurtful in her eyes. They did use her OSCAR win though, so perhaps they thought that it would be redundant to repeat.
BW needs to retire, but then the puppetmaster would lose his job, so doubt it is going to happen. I could see him donning a wig and pretending to be her should she become too old to walk the opening.
February 26th, 2008 at 10:31 am
I enjoyed the show today. The funny ones, Joy, Whoopi and Sherri were good and are getting the show moving along at a good pace. EH today put in her usual “right”, “yes” comments to anything Bawa had to say but couldn’t say much because the others were having too much fun amongst themselves. Bawa seems to talk to the others also, not looking at EH much. When is she going back to Arizona again for GOOD?
February 26th, 2008 at 10:36 am
perhaps if the oscars were shown on nickelodeon eh and ss could keep up.
February 26th, 2008 at 10:42 am
bw isn’t as quick as she use to be. people need to be more understanding when it comes to the aging process. it shouldn’t be mocked or made fun of. she loves what’s she dong and i think it is terrific that an older woman is still on the air doing her thing.
February 26th, 2008 at 11:17 am
BW should continue to work it will keep her mind sharp.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Annon, my problem with BW isn’t just about her age really. I think for her age, she is still incredibly sharp. I just don’t really care for her much as a person and I don’t care to see someone pushing 80 talking about sex and who they want to “do”. I don’t think she understands that we realize she isn’t 40 anymore and that talking like a teenager doesn’t make her one again.
People talk about how much she has done for the industry, but I don’t know how much she does for women in general now. I think she has built a career on polishing men’s egos (look at how she acts like she worships BG) and I just don’t have much respect for her. She acts like a fool on that show now. I get embarassed for her.
She also acts all chummy with the women on the panel, but I think she is the kind of woman that would smile at your face and stab you in the back if it promoted her situation or if any of her high class friends were around.
I think EH could seriously be her daughter, she’s like BW’s mini-me.

Have to give it to you Shannon P.You’ve stated your case well and won me over with the above point. Well said!

So true. See:
-Star Jones.
-Rosie O’Donnell
How about Debbie? I didn’t watch back then, but I read that she was pushed out of the show rather unceremoniously…

“Barbara then said it is like her Barack Obama story and asked if she had told it before. All the ladies said she hadn’t. (In reality she has told the story at least two times before).”
I love how Winnie’s wry style. Did the girls act like they really didn’t remember she’d told the story?
So no one, especially Joy, was upset at Uncle Ralph? All they talked about was how good looking he is, or isnt? How strange.
