The View February 26th Recap: Nathan Lane and Bitsie Tulloch

by Winnie McCarthy

bitsie-tulloch.jpg Joy Behar was invited to the releasing of Lorraine Bracco’s wine line. She introduced Lorraine. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was there and people kept asking him if he is going to run for President and he said, “Why would I tell you?” He told Joy that he watches The View everyday. He “married” Barbara on the show during a fantasy wedding segment on the show. Joy told him that the marriage was never consummated. She asked Barbara if she wants that or is it enough that he will watch her next special. The next one is on the British Royal Family and will air next Monday.

They talked about The Moment of the Truth again. On last night’s episode it was revealed that the female contestant cheated on her husband. Whoopi thought that the woman was an actress because she looked familiar. Barbara said that people go on reality shows for money, saying that Elisabeth did Survivor for money. Elisabeth said that it wasn’t just for the money, but because she wanted to torture herself. She said that it is different on Moment of Truth because it can break up marriages, adding though that the marriage was probably broke at the point that she cheated on him. Sherri pointed out that there are positive reality shows like The Biggest Loser.

The next topic was the photo of Barack Obama in traditional African clothing when visiting his relatives. Barbara said that it has become a campaign thing because there are rumors that it was leaked by the Clinton campaign. She thinks that it is a disruption. Barbara showed photos of her in Saudi Arabia where she was wearing a traditional head covering. Whoopi said why would the Clintons release it because they have worn different clothing in various countries. Sherri said that it insults our intelligence if you think that it will cause people not to vote for Barack. Joy showed a photo of her when she said that she was “in touch with her inner African.” Sherri said she thinks that Joy has been trying to pass all these years and told her that she should still wear her hair that way. (Photo below)

President Bush said that the GOP will hold the White House and voters will elect a president who will keep up the war in Iraq. He said that he understands the mentality of the American people. Elisabeth joked that maybe people just don’t understand his. Joy said that Bush has been wrong on many many things for years. Elisabeth said that McCain understands the people because he has been in war. Barbara said that we don’t need to go back and forth about our positions and Elisabeth said, “Why? Because mine’s different?” Then Barbara let her speak and Elisabeth said that we are so focused on one side of the ticket and rightly so because it is such an important election. She added, however, that McCain has a way to deal with the country in a time of war because he supported the surge and he “gets it.” Barbara said that no matter how you feel about President Bush, he is alway so confident that he will be proven right. Joy said, “Some people think it is delusional.” Elisabeth said, “I knew you were going to say that!” Whoopi said that a president needs to admit when they are wrong.

Whoopi said that the candidates need to start talking about how they are going to protect the infrastructure of the FDA and keeping us safe. Joy said that research came out saying that obesity is more dangerous than terrorism and joked that a fat terrorist is the worst. Elisabeth said maybe it is because we have been safer in the past seven years. Barbara said that in her upcoming longevity special she learned that this is the first generation that may not live longer than their parents because of obesity. She said that part of the problem is that mothers are working and it is easier to get the fast food than to cook the way our mothers did. Whoopi said that her mom instilled in her that cookies are not dinner and she couldn’t have one until she ate her food. She said that parents need to instill in their children how to eat. Elisabeth said that not just snacks, but other prepackaged food available is not good for you, but that she is so busy she doesn’t have time to cook every night. Joy said that it is hard to have a job, take care of the husband, the house, and the kids and sometimes you have to throw a pizza in the oven. Barbara said that they are not knocking mothers. Whoopi said that high fructose corn syrup is not in products in Europe.

The next topic was religion and how nearly half of Americans change religions or abandon their religion all together. Barbara said that formality of religion is what they leave, but they do not become agnostic or atheist necessarily. Elisabeth grew up in the Catholic church, but wanted to move to a more nondenominational church. She said that some of the structural things in the church felt manufactured to her. She still likes the fellowship of church, but things about the Catholic church that didn’t feel right, like going to confession. Joy said that going to confession was the best part of the church because you get absolved of what you did wrong. She said that everyone at her church growing up went to the priest who didn’t speak English, so it was great.

Sherri used to be a Jehovah’s Witness and it was very based on the works that you did. They ex-communicated her father and told her not to talk to him. Then she left and now goes to a non-denominational Christian church. She said that often the leaders of the church are very hypocritical and not leading by example what they are teaching. She also likes the fellowship of church and the ability to have them help hold her up when she is down.

Nathan Lane appeared on the show to promote his play November, which is a satire on the state of the United States government. Nathan plays the president of the United States and is “foul-mouthed and scheming.” He joked that he was there to promote his line of fine wines made in Newark. He told Barbara that she has more specials than Wal-Mart.

He said that Oscars were the least rated this year and the Tony Awards would kill for those ratings. He said that Gary Busey, who inappropriately hugged Jennifer Garner on the red carpet, is his favorite train wreck. He said that he thinks that Busey was trying to get Ryan Seacrest’s attention. He said that is easy to do, just slip him your phone number. Nathan added that young Hollywood could learn a lesson from Busey because he is indestructible like a Warner Brothers cartoon. He is just a stint in rehab and a sex tape away from turning his career around.

He said that of course the November audience sees a connection between his play and the real administration. He said that he wouldn’t change his performance if President Bush was in the audience, but doubts he will be coming to the show. He said that he is not playing President Bush, per se, but there are similarities to his character, although his is more complex than President Bush.

This week he is doing a workshop for a musical based on Catch Me if You Can, where he is playing the character that Tom Hanks played in the film. Whoopi followed Nathan Lane in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He is “having the best time” doing the current play because people laugh from beginning to the end and come up after the show to tell him how much they enjoyed it. Joy said that when she saw it, even the Republicans behind her were laughing.

Bitsie Tulloch appeared on the show to promote the new television show quarterlife. It started on the internet with a series of webisodes and now has found a place on mainstream television. She is not allowed to wear make-up for the role so she looks very different on the show. She went to Harvard as an undergrad and decided to move to Hollywood a few years ago. She previously wanted to go into art curating or become a professor. She felt, though, that the universe was pulling her to acting. She said that the dating scene is tough in LA because she can’t find men who read a lot.

The show quarterlife was the first internet series that had network level of production, the first to move to mainstream, and the original creators have full creative control. She said that your 20s are tough because you make so many important decisions about your future and you feel like you should have a sense of self, but you don’t.

NOTE: The Project Blog winner will finally be announced on Wednesday! Apparently only one point separates the winner and the loser. To make up for it, Allison has decided to give up to $20 to the runner up, the exact amount to be decided based on comments left on this post here.

  1. ShannonP Says:

I’m confused on the Project Blog Winner ratio…each time I voted it looked like a landslide difference? How did it get to one point difference?

  2. Winnie McCarthy Says:

ShannonP: The reader votes only count for a part of the overall point total. There are judges who voted on each blog as well and I guess they liked the other contestant more than me, so that leveled the playing field.

  3. ShannonP Says:

Thanks for the explanation Winnie, I didn’t know that is how it worked. I hope you still won and that the judges check their eyeglass prescriptions ;-)

  4. Lajet Says:

EH; Elisabeth said that McCain understands the people because he has been in war.

This is new. I thought it wasn’t that important to her when Bush (the draft avoider - at best) was running against Kerry (the veteran). or when Romney was running against McCain. Actually, he is still running - just not actively.

EH: Barbara said that we don’t need to go back and forth about our positions and Elisabeth said, “Why? Because mine’s different?”

Errr, no, - because we can predict what you are going say because it’s all sound bites and we’ve heard before, and before, and before, and before. . . and BW was making a different point. I laughed when she said she could predict Joy’s one-liners - because EH is so much more predictable! But looks like EH got her way.

  5. Rachel Says:

When I first turned on the TV, at about 11.02, and I saw Babs going on about her effing special, I thought for a short while that the show was a rerun.
Seriously, what’s up with her? I know she’s bad with her pimping, but I don’t recall her ever being THIS bad, it’s just ridiculous now.
I don’t actually mind Babs’ input when she’s just participating to a discussion (well, most times I don’t), but the way she takes over half a HT segment everytime she’s on is getting really tiresome.

Oh, and isn’t Nathan Lane freaking AWESOME? “You have more specials than Wal-Mart.” I think I actually clapped at this one.

I have to say, I find this “Moment of truth” piece of garbage to be absolutely gross, vile, and anything else that you would never put in your mouth. And I’m someone with extremely high tolerance for trash-TV, but this is just… uhg!
I’m just very surprised that ppl like EH and SS, who seem to be SO into family values and stuff like that watch that rubbish at all; I mean, this is a “game-show” designed to screw up families and marriages. So WTF? And blaming the chick for “imposing” this emotional torture on her hubby? Oh, c’mon. Thanks to Whoopi for pointing out that the woman probably didn’t make the decision to come on that poor excuse for a TV show on her own.
    Loved Whoopi’s:
    -Can you tell the truth?
-Yes, I can. Can you take it?

I think I’m starting to really like her, faces and all!

And Joy was hot on that picture! LOL, loved how she was making fun of herself! She did look like a toughie tough, but then again, she is a toughie!

I thought it was an OK show overall. The first HT segment infuriated me because of Babs’ bla-bla-bla, and that “Moment of Truth” abomination should be shot in the groin before it has a chance to procreate, but other than that, it was alright.

Although, by a mile, highlight of the show: Nathan Lane. He was a blast, and this comes from someone who doesn’t really like the celeb interviews.

  6. Rachel Says:

#4, about Babs referring to the political discussions going back and forth between camp blue and camp red.

I think the way Babs phrased it was “We keep repeating the same thing over and over again” (I’m trying to find the clip to quote her accurately, but it’s not up on ABC yet).

But anyway, when Babs said the word “repeating” several times, I remember thinking:
“It’s kind of ironic than YOU should say that, Babs”. Who’s been babbling like a parrot on speed in the last 10 days or so?

  7. ShannonP Says:

Re: That Moment of Truth show

I have never watched it, but kept hearing about it so I just checked out a clip. (It was of some bleach blonde talking about her ex and how she cheated on her husband.)
What baffles me is how anyone can think that show is real? It was so obviously fake. That is complete trash TV. I confess that if I found out someone watched that, I’d think they weren’t very bright. There is entertainment TV and then there is just junk TV and that is definitely junk TV.

  8. Sandy Says:

    Winnie,
GOOD LUCK!! I can’t wait to hear that the winner is you. I went to leave a comment, because the runner up sure deserves praise and a little extra cash always helps.

  9. Sandy Says:

    Thanks for the recap,
I didn’t see the show, but want to make a few comments.

I think there are several explanations for the overweight problems. I think Whoopi has a valid point about the high fructose Corn syrup, it;’s in everything, along with MSG. Also the electronic age adds to it.. Kids come home from school where they have to sit all day, and then watch TV, play video games, and are on computers. No Exercise, The same can be true with adults. And fast food doesn’t help the problem.

The political discussions..to be honest I think I can “just about” (maybe not exactly) predict what both sides are going to say about certain topics.

I would have enjoyed seeing and herring Nathan Lane. His play sounds very good.

I’ve never watched the Moment of Truth. I’m just guessing, but i think that the people on it probably know what’s going to happen before hand.
I guess some times the need for money is great.

  10. Sandy Says:

oops forgot, I wanted to comment on joy’s old picture. I really like it, she looks so different.

  11. Sooze Says:

“He told Barbara that she has more specials than Wal-Mart.”

Ha. I’m very sorry I missed this moment. Love Nathan. Did BW “appreciate” his humor?

“Barbara said that we don’t need to go back and forth about our positions and Elisabeth said, “Why? Because mine’s different?” Then Barbara let her speak and ”

Can someone clarify this since I didn’t see it? Was BW just trying to prevent any hard political discussions that might get heated. Or was she implying that they only trade talking points when they get into it over Bush, Iraq, etc.?

Never would have guessed that was a photo of Joy. Love it. She looks great.

Good luck with that contest, Winnie!

  12. Aileeny Says:

Lajet - ditto on ur comments that somehow McCain is subect on experience of war.. lord have mercy.. if u been stuffin war heads in machines.. or been god forbid.. held in a cell for many years.. now you got clarity on how to manage a war.. I dunno but it dont add up.. Not that ur experience is not relevant.. but. sheesh…

Seriosly.. its not right to put all that responsibility on him as well strategy since he hast posted one.. hurummp.. oh welll

  13. Dee Says:

I think Babs next two specials sound interesting…I do intend to watch them Babs!

Babs calling Bits out on her reality hypocrisy was delicious. I don’t believe Bits would have done that for 0 prize money..and the agent that she probably got the minute she was booted off the show.

Obesity is rising because we are safer???…way to go Bits! One of the reasons for this epidemic is the junk food industry supplementing the monies lost by government cuts to education. Those drink/snack machines in schools bring in big revenue to the schools.

I wonder how William Donohue (Catholic League) feels about Bit’s comment on the Catholic church precepts being manufactured. Catholic bashing is his hot button.

Loved Nathan Lane’s segment. I have heard, third hand, that his show is excellent!

  14. Lajet Says:

Just wanted to clarify. I do think McCain’s war experience is important. My impression is that good soldiers (like McCain, Kerry, Powell) aren’t as anxious to go to war as alpha dogs (e.g. Cheney, Rove) who have never seen war, and when they do go to war they have a much better idea of how to conduct a war! and how to treat the troops. Doesn’t mean someone who hasn’t been to war can’t be a good Commander-in-Chief either, or that everyone who has been to war is better than someone who hasn’t. Seems to me that McCain has learned good lessons, but it’s just one factor to consider.

I just don’t believe Bitsy thinks McCain’s war experience is important, since she didn’t think it was important when he was running against Bush, or when Kerry was running against Bush, or when Romney (never been to war) was actively running against McCain. It’s just her latest talking point. chirp chirp

  15. Lajet Says:

I’ve been thinking - how much work does the producer put into this show. It seems to me that over the years EH has been shut down or chastised several times. I remember one time, a few years ago, EH was almost in tears after BW talking to her like a firm mother to let others talk. And I remember RO talking about how the hostesses didn’t even know how to look at the TV screens so they didn’t turn their back on the audience when a big picture went up behind them. Seems to me that they aren’t spending much time on mentoring/coaching/grooming the hostesses. I don’t think it would take a lot of time (but what do I know) Not only am I not seeing the results, but seems to me that several of the times EH has been chastised are part of a pattern and they should have been said to EH behind the scenes. Much as I’m not an EH fan, I’m not comfortable watching her (or anyone) be chastised/educated publicly. It’s inappropriate, and not the best way to be effective. I feel like I’m watching a sociological study of the social lives of girls during recess in middle school sometimes (yea, I’m old enough that we had recess in middle school - well, actually, we had recess in the 5-8 school).

  16. Vegas Says:

I love lots of reality shows but the ones that Elisabeth and Sherri are into I don’t watch. And That piece of garbage show Moment of Truth, umm.. that is not a reality show. It is a game show and I think the people are actors as well. Elisabeth and Sherri are so gullible to believe it’s all true.
Oh and someone tell Sherri that the show is called The Biggest Loser, not ‘The Big Fat Loser’. I don’t even watch that show and I know that.

  17. TROUBLED AMERICAN Says:

Don’t believe one optimistic word from any public figure about the economy or humanity in general. They are all part of the problem. Its like a game of Monopoly. In America, the richest 1% now hold 1/2 OF ALL UNITED STATES WEALTH. Unlike ‘lesser’ estimates, this includes all stocks, bonds, cash, and material assets held by America’s richest 1%. Even that filthy pig Oprah acknowledged that it was at about 50% in 2006. Naturally, she put her own ‘humanitarian’ spin on it. Calling attention to her own ‘good will’. WHAT A DISGUSTING HYPOCRITE SLOB. THE RICHEST 1% HAVE LITERALLY MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. Don’t fall for all of their ‘humanitarian’ CRAP. ITS A SHAM. THESE PEOPLE ARE CAUSING THE SAME PROBLEMS THEY PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT. Ask any professor of economics. Money does not grow on trees. The government can’t just print up more on a whim. At any given time, there is a relative limit to the wealth within ANY economy of ANY size. So when too much wealth accumulates at the top, the middle class slip further into debt and the lower class further into poverty. A similar rule applies worldwide. The world’s richest 1% now own over 40% of ALL WORLD WEALTH. This is EVEN AFTER you account for all of this ‘good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS from celebrities and executives. ITS A SHAM. As they get richer and richer, less wealth is left circulating beneath them. This is the single greatest underlying cause for the current US recession. The middle class can no longer afford to sustain their share of the economy. Their wealth has been gradually transfered to the richest 1%. One way or another, we suffer because of their incredible greed. We are talking about TRILLIONS of dollars. Transfered FROM US TO THEM. Over a period of about 27 years. Thats Reaganomics for you. The wealth does not ‘trickle down’ as we were told it would. It just accumulates at the top. Shrinking the middle class and expanding the lower class. Causing a domino effect of socio-economic problems. But the rich will never stop. They will never settle for a reasonable share of ANYTHING. They will do whatever it takes to get even richer. Leaving even less of the pie for the other 99% of us to share. At the same time, they throw back a few tax deductable crumbs and call themselves ‘humanitarians’. IT CAN’T WORK THIS WAY. This is going to end just like a game of Monopoly. The current US recession will drag on for years and lead into the worst US depression of all time. The richest 1% will live like royalty while the rest of us fight over jobs, food, and gasoline. Crime, poverty, and suicide will skyrocket. So don’t fall for all of this PR CRAP from Hollywood, Pro Sports, and Wall Street PIGS. ITS A SHAM. Remember: They are filthy rich EVEN AFTER their tax deductable contributions. Greedy pigs. Now, we are headed for the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time. SEND A “THANK YOU” NOTE TO YOUR FAVORITE MILLIONAIRE. ITS THEIR FAULT. I’m not discounting other factors like China, sub-prime, or gas prices. But all of those factors combined still pale in comparison to that HUGE transfer of wealth to the rich. Anyway, those other factors are all related and further aggrivated because of GREED. If it weren’t for the OBSCENE distribution of wealth within our country, there never would have been such a market for sub-prime to begin with. Which by the way, was another trick whipped up by greedy bankers and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. The credit industry has been ENDORSED by people like Oprah, Ellen, Dr Phil, and many other celebrities. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘good will’ BS. ITS A LIE. If you fall for it, then you’re a fool. If you see any real difference between the moral character of a celebrity, politician, attorney, or executive, then you’re a fool. WAKE UP PEOPLE. The 1% club will always say or do whatever it takes to get as rich as possible. Without the slightest regard for anything or anyone but themselves. Vioxx. Their idea. Sub-prime. Their idea. NAFTA. Their idea. Outsourcing. Their idea. The commercial lobbyist. Their idea. The multi-million dollar lawsuit. Their idea. $200 cell phone bills. Their idea. $200 basketball shoes. Their idea. $30 late fees. Their idea. $30 NSF fees. Their idea. $20 DVDs. Their idea. Subliminal advertising. Their idea. The MASSIVE campaign to turn every American into a brainwashed credit card, pharmaceutical, love-sick, celebrity junkie. Their idea. All of which concentrate the world’s wealth and resources and wreak havok on society. All of which have been CREATED AND ENDORSED by celebrities, athletes, and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘ good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS. ITS A SHAM. NOTHING BUT TAX DEDUCTABLE PR CRAP. Bottom line: The richest 1% will soon tank the largest economy in the world. It will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before. and thats just the beginning. Greed will eventually tank every major economy in the world. Causing millions to suffer and die. Oprah, Angelina, Brad, Bono, and Bill are not part of the solution. They are part of the problem. EXTREME WEALTH HAS MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. WITHOUT WORLD PROSPERITY, THERE WILL NEVER BE WORLD PEACE OR ANYTHING EVEN CLOSE. GREED KILLS. IT WILL BE OUR DOWNFALL. Of course, the rich will throw a fit and call me a madman. Of course, their ignorant fans will do the same. You have to expect that. But I speak the truth. If you don’t believe me, then copy this entry and run it by any professor of economics or socio-economics. Then tell a friend. Call the local radio station. Re-post this entry or put it in your own words. Be one of the first to predict the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time and explain its cause. WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE.

  18. Sandy Says:

Wow Troubled American ..that there was a mouth full alright.
Actually I agree with some of what you had to say,.economically. Although I would not have put it quit the way you have.

  19. Beverly Says:

Post #17 - It’s been said that there’s a time and place for everything … Since you make absolutely no reference to The View (or its panelists or guests), IMO this doesn’t seem to be the place for this particular rant. Personally, I’m all for OT conversation WHEN it’s sincere. You make incredibly inflammatory comments without posting any specific source info. causing me to question your motive. When you head off to the next blog to “Re-post …” how about including some concrete (and positive) solutions or at least calling out for conversation? With all that said, I must add — I DO agree with your chosen moniker.

  20. Rachel Says:

Yeah. Let’s get rid of Bono. He’s the problem.
    It’s clear.
    People, open your eyes.
Now close them, let’s all hold hands together and chant:
“Off with you Bono. Go away. And take Oprah and Brangelina with you. (And Elisabeth Hasselbeck while you’re at it.) You ARE the problem, Bono. So STFU and sing.”

Seriously dude, you need to chill. You’re gonna hyperventilate with all that CapsLock-related stress. You should relax, listen to some music. I know this great band, called U2, very soothing, they are. Their singer’s a bit on the subdued side, but I think they do have potential.

  21. Hanna Says:

    Ummmm… Ummmmmmm…..

    Got nothing.

Maybe try a some ice cream to sweeten ya up, sprinkled with a little Xanax!!

  22. Beverly Says:

    Re: TA

    Sandy - You’re so nice …

Rachel & Hanna - LOVED both of your responses. Thanks for the laughs and the light-hearted approach. I’ll have to remember both of your reactions for the blogger-rants I will inevitably encounter in the future.

  23. Anonnynonny Says:

Beverly, I actually love YOUR response in #19 . And I enjoyed other comments you’ve made to similar types of posts.

  24. annon Says:

    TROUBLED AMERICAN,
Next time you feel the need to go on a rant add a few things in there about the view. That way everyone will be happy. I didn’t bother reading your post too long for me.
