The View February 5th Recap: George Stephanopoulos, Ali Wentworth, and Sheryl Crow

by Winnie McCarthy

george-ali-wentworth.jpgToday on The View, Sherri Shepherd was wearing the bowling shirt from her charity bowling event the night before. The four hosts on The View will be having a bowling tournament among each other coming up soon. They discussed if they should divide the teams by age or maybe by liberal vs. conservative. Elisabeth said that she would be on a team by herself then. Sherri said that she would be with her because she is “kinda conservative.”

Whoopi Goldberg reminded all of the viewers that Barbara Walters is not in NY this week because she is in California for her Oscar special. Of course she delivered the message in a silly voice, because she doesn’t really care about the show and she was trying to make it less boring for herself.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck went for a run this morning and then ran to the voting booth. For some reason her name wasn’t in her precinct’s book, so she had to get a paper ballot. When she went to fill it in, she realized that they accidentally gave her a Democratic ballot! She said that the election judge assumed that she was Democratic because she was voting in the upper west side. When she told the woman that she wanted a Republican ballot, she said that the polling place grew silent and everyone stared at her.

Joy hasn’t voted yet and can’t decide until she gets to the booth. Whoopi said that she finally heard something that she wanted to hear in an interview with a candidate and is now decided. She wanted someone to say that companies who take jobs outside of the country will lose tax breaks. She said that right now she is going to vote for Barack Obama who is the one that said that. Sherri took a quiz which shows which candidate your views match up with and it was a three way tie with John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. Joy’s quiz told her she matched Kucinich.

Joy said that this is a landmark day and said that one of the staff members cried when she went to vote because she has a daughter and the significance of voting for a woman really impacted her. Sherri said that her relatives are equally moved by being able to vote for a Black man. Elisabeth said that it is moving, even if you aren’t voting for Hillary or Barack. Both Elisabeth and Sherri told their children about the significance of the day and that they can grow up to be President. Whoopi agreed that it is a moving day.

Should Mike Huckabee quit the race because he is taking votes from Mitt Romney? Elisabeth said that he had the most conservative of all the candidates and maybe Mitt Romney is taking votes from him. She added that Huckabee has lost momentum because he ran out of money. Joy asked if she knew how Romney made his money. Sherri said something I could not hear, but she later declined to repeat it and said it was “a very bad joke in poor taste.” Elisabeth said that it was a leading question because she knew Joy was going to talk about how he cost people their jobs. Joy said that Romney made a lot of his money through hostile takeovers and cost people their jobs. Elisabeth said that business is tricky because it is about money and bottom line dollars and people do lose their jobs for a longterm goal of the company. She said that is why she not in business because she would feel bad.

Sherri said that there should be a cap on how much someone can spend in an election because it is an unfair advantage for someone to spend $100 million when someone else can only spend $7 million. Elisabeth said that she looks and thinks what other things they could do with that money, like feed half of America. Whoopi said that the money is what stops a lot of people from running president. Sherri said that the average person could not even think about running for president. Whoopi said that the average person in America can not even afford to heat their houses now. Joy said that all of the money being spent in Iraq could be used on health care. Elisabeth said that it is important to make sure that country is secure and safe in the longterm. Joy said that we should be safe, but that should go to the right country next time. Elisabeth said that a lot of people are looking in the rear view mirror now saying, “Woulda shoulda coulda.” Whoopi and Joy both said, “Don’t look at us.” Whoopi said that once you figured out you are in the wrong place, you have to turn it around.

Whoopi said that Bush is authorizing some amount of money that no one has ever heard of and saying that we should be able to balance it in the next six or seven years, when he is already gone. Joy said that we will all be eating Chinese food every night. Elisabeth said that there have been many presidents who have left a deficit, but she admitted that it was a “ridiculous situation” and that is why his base has “parted ways” from him; because they are sick of the spending. Joy said to Elisabeth that “your party” never mentions health care. As they debated the issue, Whoopi mouthed “I’m gonna go. We’ll be right back” and they went to commercial.

Relationships Myths that married couples should ignore from Parenting.com:
1) Don’t go to bed angry. They say that is not true because arguments don’t have a time limit. Whoopi said, “Yes they do.” Elisabeth said that she is exhausted from staying up late trying to resolve an argument. Sherri wondered how to you apply the concept of not going to bed angry because you are so angry, it is hard to let ago. She said that in premarital counseling, they told you to hug or touch because it is hard to argue if you have physical contact. Whoopi said that you should not touch her if she is angry and that she should be left alone until she figures out if you are “good enough” to talk to her.

Joy said that she wonders about name-calling, saying she wouldn’t mind if Steve called her an idiot, but would mind if he called her fat.

2) Having a baby brings you closer. In reality it puts a strain on the relationship. Elisabeth said it is true, because it is difficult to even find time together. Joy asked Elisabeth what she does if she or Tim disagree about something. Elisabeth said that they try to plan ahead for a situation. She added that once she argued with Tim because he went to get Grace from timeout and she thought it was her role because she put her there. Sherri and Whoopi said that it is okay to have a disagreement in front of the children because it can teach them how to resolve conflict. Joy said that you run into problems if one parent is very strict and the other is very lenient. Sherri said that Jeffrey’s father is more strict than she is and Jeffrey won’t act up as much around him.

George Stephanopoulos and his wife comedian Ali Wentworth appeared on the show. Ali said that she is like Whoopi and doesn’t like George to force the fight to end and doesn’t want to be touched until she is done. George said that they have to get it over and done to sleep. It is a long night for everybody. Ali said that she needs some flowers before she will “unbutton” again.

Joy asked him if it was true that Republicans don’t have a clue about health care and he said he wasn’t going to answer that. George thinks that Huckabee is helping John McCain, especially in the south. On the Republican side, he is watching Massachusetts, New York, California and Missouri.

He said that you need to watch the popular votes and the delegates, especially on the Democratic side. Whoopi asked him what a “Super delegate is” and he said that it someone in the democratic party who is an elected official and they automatically go to the convention and get to vote their position.

Ali is a Democrat and, she joked, also a model. Her mom was the social secretary for Nancy Reagan. Her phones were tapped growing up because they thought her step-father was a spy during Watergate because he was an editor for the London Sunday Times. Ali said that her mom told her that the phones were tapped, so of course she got on the phone and said, “balls,” laughed and hung-up.

Ali has a show called Head Case on Starz, which is completely unscripted. She plays an “unhinged” therapist who is off-the-wall. The show has a lot of celebrity guests like Sly Stallone, Joel Madden, and others. Sherri asked her why she wanted to do an unscripted show and she said that she is “an unscripted girl.” George joked that it made him nervous. Ali joked that the video clip they just showed (of her character screaming and ranting about men) was a home movie that was shot “after we had just made love.”

Sherri asked them what they talk about at home. Ali said the usual stuff, like what to have for dinner and why the five-year-old is dressed like a hooker. She said that she blames Hannah Montana for everything. Sherri said that George and Ali need a show together. Ali said it will never happened. She asked George previously if he would rather have part of his pinky finger severed or have her on his show, and he said that he could live without that part of his finger.

Sheryl Crow appeared on the show to promote her new album Detours. She recently adopted a baby, Wyatt, who is nine months old. She said that people really distract themselves from what is going on in the country. She said that the encounter she had with Karl Rove also helped inspire the record. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer she said that it was a real wake-up call. She is currently cancer free. She moved to rural Tennessee because there is no paparazzi and her son will have a normal life there. She said that her son informs every decision she makes and she said it is “like Christmas” and she can’t wait until he wakes up each day.

She then performed a song of the new album.

  1. Stacee Says:

The Ali and George interview was fun. In fact, it’s probably the most interesting one to date. I think Whoopi actually stayed awake, lol. George appeared to be on the edge of his seat wondering what his wife would say next. I got a kick out of both of them. Ali’s show looks fun too. Who knew she had such a great sense of humor.
Re: the Nixon phone tap: “BALLS” . ROFLMAO :D
Sheryl Crow’s interview was good too. Wish she would have had more time to discuss the Karl Rove incident. How cute was her little boy, Wyatt :)
All in all, I thought it was a very enjoyable show today.
PS I was not crazy about Sherri’s wig today. It looked too —- well—- too much like a wig to me.

  2. Dana Says:

Does anyone know what the Karl Rove story is, I’d love to hear it.

  3. Dana Says:

Ed. Added: From The Huffington Post. Written by Sheryl Crow and Laurie David

Last night Thelma and Louise drove the bus off the cliff or at least into the White House Correspondents Dinner. The “highlight” of the evening had to be when we were introduced to Karl Rove. How excited were we to have our first opportunity ever to talk directly to the Bush Administration about global warming. We asked Mr. Rove if he would consider taking a fresh look at the science of global warming. Much to our dismay, he immediately got combative. And it went downhill from there.

We reminded the senior White House advisor that the US leads the world in global warming pollution and we are doing the least about it. Anger flaring, Mr. Rove immediately regurgitated the official Administration position on global warming which is that the US spends more on researching the causes than any other country.

We felt compelled to remind him that the research is done and the results are in (www.IPCC.ch). Mr. Rove exploded with even more venom. Like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum, Mr. Rove launched into a series of illogical arguments regarding China not doing enough thus neither should we. (Since when do we follow China’s lead?)

At some point during his ramblings, we became heartbroken to think that the President of the United States and his top advisers have partially built a career on global warming not being real. We have been telling college students across the country for the past two weeks that government does not change until people demand it… well, listen up folks, everyone had better get a lot louder because the message clearly is not getting through.

In his attempt to dismiss us, Mr. Rove turned to head toward his table, but as soon as he did so, Sheryl reached out to touch his arm. Karl swung around and spat, “Don’t touch me.” How hardened and removed from reality must a person be to refuse to be touched by Sheryl Crow? Unfazed, Sheryl abruptly responded, “You can’t speak to us like that, you work for us.” Karl then quipped, “I don’t work for you, I work for the American people.” To which Sheryl promptly reminded him, “We are the American people.”

At that point Mr. Rove apparently decided he had had enough. Like a groundhog fearful of his own shadow, he scurried to his table in an attempt to hibernate for another year from his responsibility to address global warming. Drama aside, you would expect as an American citizen to be able to engage in a civil discussion with a public official. Instead, Mr. Rove was dismissive, condescending, and quite frankly a bully.

Ultimately, we were left wondering what on Earth Mr. Rove was talking about when he said “the American people.” If more than 60% of American voters, the Supreme Court, over 400 cities, the US National Academy of Sciences, numerous major US corporations, and others don’t constitute the American people, then what does? The truth is, if this administration cared one iota about the American people, they would have addressed this problem long ago, and the sad reality is that this problem has been left to us, all of us, since the current administration has abandoned this issue entirely. In the absence of true leadership, we must guide ourselves. We can solve this, but we had better act fast.

  4. Sandy Says:

Darn I always miss the good shows it seems like.

From Winnie’s recap and Stacee’s comment it sounds like it was an interesting show.
I would have really liked the George and Ali interview.
Have to agree , the phone tap. loved it.. I could see me doing that when I was young.

Thanks to Dana for the article.

Global warming is definitely real. It’s been a problem and happening long before this administration, and in my opinion..I don’t think anything we do now is going to make that much of a difference in changing it. VERY sadly. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to do all we can. Just I don’t think we can fix it, maybe slow it down.

  5. Random Musings Says:

I guess I picked the right day to watch the show. I hadn’t watched in a long, ong time but turned it on about ten minutes in. I loved the interview with Ali Wentworth and George Stephanopoulis…the first time I have laughed at the show in ages. They are very funny together.

  6. ShannonP Says:

I laughed a lot during the Ali and George interview, what a fun couple.
To me it seems like Joy and Sherri are being more vocal about their opinions on things and I love that. I enjoy hearing their takes on things the most. The other two kind of leave me cold with their antics and bloated opinions of themselves, but Joy and Sherri just seem like real people and authentic and I like to know how they think on things.

  7. Megan Says:

Today really was a good show - Ali and George were definitely entertaining.

ShannonP - I feel the same way about Joy and Sherri. Whoopi doesn’t bother me as much as EH does but I still prefer to listen to Joy the most.

  8. Aileen Says:

ok ok.. me too.. loved the george and ali segment.. loved the recap and videos on abc.com. Ok i gotta say it..

CAN YOU BELIEVE?? poor Winnie had to shut down yesterdays posting for comments??? lmaooooo mine posted to late to get rebuttal on how my post should be handled.. shucks.. i missed all the fun.

  9. Aileen Says:

Oh.. forgot to mention.. EH finally did her roots thank god.. I thought she was gonna change her name to Elizabitch Shakira Hasslecrack… :-)

  10. Ann Says:

I recently moved house and don’t have cable. I’m really missing “The View”. These updates are my only contact.

OK from here in Australia we just can’t wait for you to get rid of the Republicans. I like and respect McCain but it’s time for a change and for the damage done in the last 7 years to be mended.

  11. Viva Says:

    #9 Aileen Elizabitch Shakira Hasslecrack…
    TOO FREAKIN FUNNY!!
#8- I missed the posting for comments having to be shut down. That’s too bad. Personally, I’ve just been reading the recaps lately and haven’t posted in awhile. Partly because I haven’t been watching the view but mostly I just don’t like the way the comment section has become almost an attack on personal views and beliefs. Believing in different things than other people doesn’t make them wrong. People shouldn’t be judged and talked down too. It’s a show called the view about different views and perspectives and we should be able to have discussions here in a respectful manner.
There’s some regular posters who have been gone for awhile I’m wondering if they feel the same way or just have been too busy?
Either way thanks Winnie for the recaps, I do enjoy reading them. Hopefully you don’t have to continue to shut down the comments or go back to approving posts.

  12. Aileen Says:

    Viva Dahlink,

I do know what you means in regards to absentee peeps which I know is because of the new face of commenting. We had once used softsoap and now are dealing with commentators who are hard core. I so have to refrain from posting at times. Based on my posts,, can you imagine the content I am refraining from? lolol

  13. LouiseinAlabama Says:

I do know what you means in regards to absentee peeps which I know is because of the new face of commenting.

Yes, I agree Aileen and Viva, I’ve refrained from posting comments about certain topics also for fear of being personally attacked. I still look forward to reading the recaps daily.

  14. AbsenteePeepFromPeoria Says:

Yes, Louise. When criticizers of Elisabeth’s performance on the show were told that they must have had hate in their hearts, I was very offended.
