The View January 9th Recap: Tom Cruise
Today on The View, in this episode that was taped Thursday, all five hosts were present. They were all wearing black and white and pretty dressy. Barbara said it was by accident, but Whoopi said subconsciously they all dressed up for guest Tom Cruise.
A NY doctor is suing his ex-wife for a return of the kidney he donated to her or over $1 million in compensation. Sherri said he claims she cheated on him, but the alleged boyfriend denied any affair. Barbara wants to know how you set a price on a kidney. Whoopi thought the whole thing was amusing. Elisabeth said if you give someone life and then they screw up your life, maybe you want to take it back. Whoopi wondered about the implications, asking if a family who gave a person’s heart to you decided you were not living your life right and asked for it back. Elisabeth said maybe they will start having pre-nups for organs. Whoopi said she worries about men with hair plugs because the hair plug donors may not like their politics and will want the hair back. Joy said that it is all about the moolah and not the organs.
Joe the Plumber will be heading to Israel to be a war correspondent for a conservative website. Joy said that it does not take a genius to start and a war and it must not take a genius to cover one. She added that it is dangerous over there and he could be “Joe the dead plumber pretty soon.” Elisabeth said that people relate to him and he will be able to give a perspective of ordinary people in Israel. Barbara said facetiously that being a plumber and a journalist are the same and Sherri told her that anyone can do her job.
The next topic was that the porn industry would also like a government financial bailout. Apparently people are too depressed to have sex, so the industry needs a boost. Elisabeth said that if you ask for a government hand-out, you may be subject to restrictions. Joy said that “the porn industry is going down (pardon the pun)” because all the movies show sex now. Watching a film with Barbara that had a sex scene made Joy feel like she was having a menage a trois with Barbara. Whoopi said that they “sweeten the sound” for the sex movies by adding extra moaning and she wants that job. Barbara said that in When Harry Met Sally they said that anyone can fake an orgasm. Sherri asked Barbara if she fakes orgasms and Barbara said, “I am not having these kind of conversations.”
Mustaches are re-gaining popularity (Barbara said “on men!” as though that needed clarifying). Barbara said that a beard means you are lazy, but that a mustache takes work. They showed Bill Geddie with a mustache and Sherri said he looks like he belongs in a biker bar. Whoopi loves mustaches, as does Joy. Joy said that she would not have sex with her ex-husband after he shaved off his mustache. Sherri doesn’t like it because it is scratchy and gets food stuck in it. Elisabeth likes them, but Barbara does not.
Tom Cruise appeared on the show to promote his film Valkyrie. Barbara called Katie Holmes’ Broadway show “All My Children,” when it is called “All My Sons.” The family spent Christmas in Los Angeles and he dressed up like Santa Claus. Last year, Suri said, “No Dada, No” when he wore the costume. They had a nice quiet snuggle evening for New Year’s Eve. He said it was also a low key Christmas, which was more about giving. The older kids got iPods.
Tom thinks it is flattering that the media does fashion segments on Suri, but also “it is what it is.” He was given “strict instructions” not to discuss the personal lives of his other children, so he declined to answer Joy’s question about whether his older daughter is dating. He said that she is a good girl. He said it is interesting to have teenagers and the young child at the same time. His 14-year-old son Connor is in Will Smith’s movie, playing a younger version of Smith’s character. Tom and Will were watching the audition and the director made them leave. He said that they were both nervous to see if got the part. Tom wanted Connor to earn it.
Tom is nominated for a Golden Globe for Tropic Thunder. Unfortunately, at this point in the show, my local coverage was interrupted for breaking local news regarding the impeachment vote for Governor Rod Blagojevich. Obviously the plan to avoid being preempted by airing the episode today rather than yesterday (when Barack Obama gave a speech) did not work, at least for the people of Illinois. If you are curious, the vote for impeachment was not unanimous, with Rep. Milton Patterson being the one only who voted against the impeachment.
When the show resumed (after about 10 minutes or so), it was the next segment. They talked about his film Valkyrie. Joy asked if he was worried it would not be a hit. Tom thought it would do well and was surprised by the speculation it would not do well. He thinks the story is a compelling one and he said it is the second time he has played a real character (the first being Born on the 4th of the July). He said that it is a PG-13 movie, there is no sex in the film and it is well-told.
Tom said that he did not hear the story before, which is about the planned assassination of Hitler. Joy said that they failed in their attempt. Barbara said not to tell the ending and Joy said that it is history and people know it. Tom said that there was some concern from Germany because they are worried about how their history will be portrayed. They showed a clip from the film.
Barbara asked what it was like to play the character and be a different person and wearing the swastika. Tom said that you are creating a character and it was strange because he always hated Nazis and wanted to kill Hitler. His character had great integrity and wanted to tell the story.
Although they teased the next segment to be about his movie history, when they came back from commercial, Barbara asked him about the death of John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s son Jett. Tom said it was “horrific” and they are such doting parents and wonderful people. When he did not say anymore, Barbara asked him about the speculation about Scientology and medical care. He said that it is not true and that the church tells you to go to the doctor and get physical illnesses taken care of.
Tom said he remembers when Jett was born and John just adored him and he really does not have words for what has happened.
Sherri then changed the subject to the lighter topic of Tom’s past movies, like Risky Business. They showed the famous scene where he dances in his underwear in the living room. Sherri said that they are all picturing him naked and it is nice. He said doing the scene was fun and he said “never say never” if asked if he would do a scene like that again. He is amazed and flattered that the scene has remained memorable and is in the Guitar Hero commercial.
They showed the clip of him singing “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” in Top Gun. Joy asked if he was singing off-key on purpose and he said yes and that he can sing on-key. He worries it will hurt his chances of being in a musical. He would like to try a movie musical to see if he could do it. Whoopi thought he would be good in “My Fair Lady” and Joy thought “Chicago” would be a good fit.

Barbara, you already had “these kinds of conversations”! Oy!
January 9th, 2009 at 11:20 am
I actually came up with this last night.
I have a request for all of the people out there that dont comment. Please make today a day for all of us to hear from you.
If you are feeling good about the show… tell us
If you are feeling bad about the show… tell us
If you think we are all idiots…. we wanna know.
It seems like the same people (me included) are the ones commenting, but there are many of you that dont.
Im intrigued to find out what you are thinking.
Even if you are shy…. you still have a valid opinion.
Enlighten us please…… who knows… you might even make a difference.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Miss the begininng of the show, did they mention why Joy was gone? And if so why?

Roger,
I think the show is becoming increasingly irrelevant. It all seems to come down to each hosts personal quirks, not the subject. None of them are experts at anything, they are just opinionated egomaniacs. I am not interested in BW’s friends, Whoopi’s gas, Joy’s daughter’s pottery, The Bachelor, or Jeffrey.
At this point, they all irritate me, and apparently everyone else. Each day’s posts are just a discussion of who’s “quirks” irritate who the most. Meh.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:34 am
At the end of the show, Tom Cruise went into the audience and mingled with the folks. Very nice guy !!!
January 9th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Hi Roger! I usually don’t comment but do enjoy this blog very much. I used to love The View, but once Rosie left I can’t stomach it anymore. Elisabeth needs to go away, as does Whoopi and Barbara. I think this show has run its course. If I am home when The View is on I watch Will and Grace reruns instead..LOL.

Recap–
A NY doctor is suing his ex-wife for a return of the kidney he donated to her or over $1 million in compensation.
I have become convinced that someone from The View comes to this site…. I saw this story on MSNBC… it was a quick blurb before commercial. I mentioned it on yesterday’s recap and lo and behold…. they mention it on today’s show.
Pretty cool if u ask me….. shame they didnt give credit to us
Maybe we should give some suggestions about what they could talk about…. it doesnt seem to work telling them what NOT to talk about.
Hey “The View” person…. what do you want to hear from us?? Guide us to help save the show.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Roger, that story was all over the news, so that might be a little bit of overactive imagination to think they learned about it from this site.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:53 am
January 9th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Yeah, I heard that story on the Al Rantel show on KABC 790, Los Angeles. A little plug, oops! And Roger, it would be nice to see other usernames commenting, but I guess it’s just us. Some of the old commentere who are listed as “top commenters” haven’t bothered in months.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
#8 Shannon -
I totally agree with your response. I don’t think any of us are receiving pay checks from ABC. Nor am I a professional critic on this blog. LOL
January 9th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
FROM THE RECAP: “Joe the Plumber will be heading to Israel to be a war correspondent for a conservative website.”
MY RESPONSE: I heard him give a couple of interviews and my impression of him is that he is not very knowledgable of world affairs. He was also not very truthful, nor do I believe credible.
And who are these people that “relate to him”?
Amazing, though. Only here can a pretend business buying plumber go from asking a question to media guest to a singer to a book writer to a “journalist. Aint America great?
January 9th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Longtime lurker; first time poster. In responce to Roger from Ohio’s post.
If you are feeling good about the show… There is nothing to tell.
If you are feeling bad about the show… I feel like I am watching a trainwreck in progress. A slow, slow train wreck.
If you think we are all idiots…. Most of you are reading my mind. I also LMAO at some of the comments.
I was actually rooting for Elisabeth on Survivor. I don’t know what happened to her. My only guess is BG and her MIL as a tag team. I feel no warmth or fun from her. I also used to like Sherri on ELR and Less Than Perfect. I have a hard time watching always being the victim of the world. I have liberal views, but I am a conservative person. Barbara, oh boy! If I was her daughter, I believe I would be doing every thing I could to get POA ASAP! I was able to get TPIR an hour later until this week, but now it conflicts with the view. I think I will watch Drew, and read here. I can’t take anymore!! I will be reading her on Monday, as I won’t fall for anymore of the ratings grabs! Coultergeist makes me ill!
January 9th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
FROM THE RECAP: “Joe the Plumber will be heading to Israel to be a war correspondent for a conservative website.”
Is it just me or did I mishear something…. when this was brought up, Elisabeth first said that the military personal would be glad that he was there, because most of them are conservatives. Doesnt she realize that there are 2 things wrong with that comment…. first… I think she has her numbers wrong, I dont think most of the military is conservative. second…. Joe the “Journalist” is going to Israel…. as far as I know… there isnt any American Troops killing civilians in Gaza.
Could someone let me know…. how big is the Hamas army that Israel is fighting?
January 9th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Liked the Tom Cruise interview. He was at a loss for words re: Jett Travolta. “Valkyrie” is very good- and gee, yes, BW, we DO know the ending! His role in “Tropic Thunder” was hilarious. Missed some of it due to the break for Gov. Blago news also.
I think the reason this show annoys me is that I do not learn much from it. If the hosts were smarter, the audience would be smarter by association. We would take away knowledge from the show, not be chronically ticked off by the stupidity of it. It is a waste of air time when it could be a fabulous forum from the feminine point of view.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Thanks Winnie,
I watched today’s show, and enjoyed it.
I like tom Cruise, and enjoyed seeing some clips from some of his older movies.
# 2 Roger,
I watch the View when I can, which usually ends up being about 2 days a week. I usually enjoy it when I do.
I’ve watched the show since it’s beginning, again, when I could.
There are host that I enjoyed more than others, or related to, more than others.
I watch it merely for the entertainment, I guess. My favorites are Joy & Sherri. I’ve never looked at it as a factual show, or any kind of a news show.
I don’t usually get irritated by any of the host.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
# 15 Roger,
No you didn’t mishear. that is exactly what E.H. said.
I don’t think that the Hamas army is very big.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Thanks for the invite to comment, Roger- I have been hooked on this site and enjoy reading everyones comments. I just never comment because amongst everyone, my thoughts are usually covered.
I haven’t watched The View for awhile, I really can’t stomach Elisabeth. And Whoopi annoys me with her fake voices and her need to try to be funny in cooking segments. I do read the recaps and watch the clips. I saw this mornings episode and thought maybe they are reading the comments here, what with the kidney story finally being talked about! (It has been in the news for a couple days already- I doubt it is coincidental that Roger mentioned it on here yesterday and they talk about it today!)
January 9th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
“don’t give away the ending!” LOL. yowza. Time to put the ol’ mare out to pasture.
And asking tom about Travolta’s kid… she really is a pig. It’s obvious she was asking him as a fellow Scientologist not as a Hollywood friend and when he didn’t sink to her level she said let me be more specific. Like did his son die because you are Scientologists?. Just like her question to Swayze’s wife - have you thought of life without him. She is a PIG.
All my Children. lol. Her meds need to be rebalanced BG.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Ok this is so stupid about the guy who wants his kidney back. Look, anyone who is thinking about giving an organ better think twice about it. Once you give something like an organ you shouldn’t ask for it back or money for it. That’s just wrong. I am sorry for him that things didn’t work out but that’s a new low to ask for the kidney back.
P.S. If you aren’t comfortable with giving an organ and think you might want it back later….then have an agreement drawn up first. If they agree to it, then no problem!
Saving someone’s life is usually done out of generosity and love. Money and recompensation should not be part of it…EVER!
January 9th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Roger from Ohio Says:
I mentioned it on yesterday’s recap and lo and behold…. they mention it on today’s show.
you know this show was taped yesterday, right? and yesterday they showed the normally pre-taped show that was meant for Friday. They didn’t want Tom’s appearance to be pre-empted by Obama’s speech.
But, yah, I think someone does troll thru the site. But you know, 100 posts is a big day for this site so I don’t think it worries them. There are other postings - esp. during the election - that went into the thousands with comments about EH.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Roger;
I am just sick and tired of the View. I agree with mc500. None of them are authorities on anything and are coming across as pretty stupid and irrelevant since they aren’t even taking the time to brief themselves before they go on and recite the same old same old. I don’t watch it any more but I do enjoy this site.
I still feel as if they (BG & BW) manipulated us during the convention for the ratings. I haven’t gotten past EH’s very poor behaviour throughout and how it was egged on behind the scenes. BW’s lived her entire life in front of the camera. She’s too damn old for that prissy, coy, cautious and phoney sentimentality. She is condescending to everyone else especially her viewers. Her friends are old has beens, also, and name dropping is pathetic. EH begging for invites to the White House? It’s her last hurrah, I guess.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Barbara, I now concede with others who have been critical of her behavior, has sold her soul to the beast by asking Tom Cruise about Jett’s death, and the possible connection to Scientology. She asked this question the same week that Whoopi made the appeal to the press to BACK OFF the Travoltas: “Let them breathe.” Whoopi went out her way to communicate her displeasure with Barbara’s line of questioning by hanging her head and furrowing her brow. It didn’t escape Tom either (who was wonderful today. He’s hard not to like).
Barbara’s need to ask intrusive questions is not good journalism, it’s poor taste, plain and simple. She did the same thing to Patrick Swayze: “How much longer do you think you have?” “Have you contemplated life without him?” to wife Lisa. These are horrible, heartless, hard to watch questions delivered from a one-time top-rated journalist who has now gone to the dark side. Barbara, it was wrong, and you’re better than that, or at least I used to think you were. There are so many probing, interesting, revealing questions you could have asked, instead of going for the easy, raw and emotionally draining subject of Patrick’s dead beloved father.
EH is WRONG. She, like so many FOX viewers, chooses to believe those fraudulent Military Times Polls. They have now put out two major misrepresentations of the military’s political leanings based on a small, NOT random selection of upper-ranking officers. The MTPs are completely invalid and only FOX has the journalistic irreverence to repeat them. Actually, only FOX and The View via EH.
I’m really thrown-off by Barbara’s face-lift. I know she paid too much for the procedure to believe what I’m about to type…but she actually looks older. I know she oblivious to it, because she’s flashing her face around like a new-found penny.
Hi Rog. Thanks for inviting all us lurkers out from under our beds…LOL
January 9th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
In regards to the Gaza topic…I was sickened by this commercial.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oDzfKjEcho
Why can’t they make a commercial asking for donations for the people in need in Israel and Palestine. Why do they need to side with Israel? People are dying on both sides. They are both wrong! I am getting real tired of all this religious B.S.
Ok, sorry for the vent…
January 9th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
KELLY!!!!! Hey!!!!
“I know she oblivious to it, because she’s flashing her face around like a new-found penny.”
I’m sorry, but hat was funny! LOL!!!
I haven’t tuned in to see her, but if the pictures of her in the other post is an accurate representation, eeek.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Jennie, I had the same reaction to the commercial as you did. I’m relieved to see that I am not the only one that feels that way.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Hey Stacee - I considered reinventing myself as Kellee (as a homage to you), but didn’t want to get jailed in ‘moderation’ for dual usernames.
EH does look pregnant.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
kelly
sherri looke really nice today. eh top bw hair not so much. sorry guys this is all I got from the shoe today. Oh and Tom has cute kids and joe the war correspondent is coming soon loves it. I’ll do better when they do. lol
January 9th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
#25. ITA!
# 24. Hey Kelly,
I agree our military isn’t any different than our society. There are people from all different backgrounds serving.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
i thought it was poor taste on barbara’s part to ask about travolta.
this is none of her business. and if she wants to know, she should be a real woman and ask him to his face.
i’m sorry if i sound angry. but, this prying into lives of grieving human beings has to stop.
when the travolta family is ready to talk, they will.
barbara should show more respect.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I think EH looks knocked up too. Irresponsible.
Why doesn’t she adopt?
January 9th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
At least Whoopi is good at keeping herself still. Sherri was really agitating her leg today. Both Joy and bits do that annoying playing with their fingers.
We do allow people to sell their sperm and eggs. Doctors don’t work for love alone.
Lisa Ling did a segment on Oprah about Indian women being surrogates. Yes, it is distasteful, but it really makes a big difference to the families and gives value to being a woman.
Was Whoopi thinking of Tom Cruise when she was going on and on about hair plugs? Hair plug donors? She must be really easy to fool.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Hey Kelly!! Welcome back, you were missed…also welcome to all the newbies…Good idea Rog.
The hot topics were…what can I say; I for one know that I lie awake at nights thinking about men’s facial hair and its impact on the well-being of mankind.
Today’s show was so boring I kind’a fogged out and only came to a few times when TC flashes his stunning smile…
The situation in Israel and the Gaza is so complicated but the killing of innocent citizens is never the right thing to do. How on earth can this be helpful? The only thing this does is escalate the hatred and violence.
I think BW’s face lift does make her look older, more fragile and somehow, oddly nervous.

I’m all over the place…there are days I should just stay in bed.
January 9th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Hi Miss mibi:
Joe the Plumber should be more selective or he’s going to end up with a moniker like Elizabeth Taylor- Hilton-Wilding-Todd-Fisher-Burton-Burton-Warner-Fortenski.
Hi rainlillie:
(my ‘explanation point’ key won’t work – now everything I type looks so sedate).
The Gaza video looks like a semi-professional con for American dollars that will never see their way across the ocean, à la the Hurricane Katrina scams. The comments are always interesting.
January 9th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Kelly;
ITA BW was sickeningly tasteless to Swayze and the interview re:Tom Cruise. Face lift? Yuk!
January 9th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Tom Cruise, love him or hate him, it is obvious he loves his wife and kids. When he talks about normal everyday things he comes across as very likable.
Barbara not wanting to give away the ending to Valkyrie is further proof she needs to retire.
They finally mention what’s going on in the Middle East and it is to talk about Joe the Plumber?! And Elisabeth, Republican to the bone, saying Joe will do a good job.
On a completely shallow note, what was up with Barbara’s hair today?
January 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Joey, i hear ya. i’m kinda frantic today myself.
speaking of military, my 19 yr. old son enlisted and will be sworn in tomorrow before his basic training in georgia.
he’s a moderate and supports our president-elect.
i’m anxious and proud and sad and…remembering him as a toddler.
January 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
#37 says : On a completely shallow note, what was up with Barbara’s hair today?
Reponse : I think she had hair extensions, along with a new “face”.
January 9th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Hi Kelly! So good to hear from you.
Thanks Roger…like the idea of getting new commenters and for getting Kelly out from under the bed.
I know some people that are so insensitive and immature that I avoid them at all costs. But BW makes them all look like Mother Teresa and Ghandi rolled into one. Her questions to Patrick and his wife were unimaginable. If I were faced with their situation and a friend asked me if I considered what life would be like without my husband, I would not only walk away from them, I would never speak to them again. How could a human being so cruel to another?
And then to ask Tom Cruise about his friend’s son’s death…does that woman have any compassion? And how could so many in the film industry revere her and agree to her intrusive inquiries?
Could not help but see Whoopie’s disgust on the couch as BW asked her questions. It was painful to watch.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Heatherspeaks, spoken like a true Mom… to be anxious and proud and sad. They all grow up far too quickly. Tell your son we are thankful to him and proud, too.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Barbara is embarrassing these days - I thought Tom was very gracious when responding to those uncomfortable questions. I think when it comes down to it he is a really great guy who is very caring about his fans and is also a great actor. I think Scientology is weird but to me it does not change his acting skills or the fact that he is a great guy. I hate to hear their discussions about sex - who cares and who wants to hear an almost 80 year old woman talking about sex. It’s just weird. And even the topics they are about they do not bother to go on the internet and research the facts. They just come up with half truths, misinformation and disinformation. They are always talking about their Blackberries - hey, here’s an idea - get on their and look up the facts about the topics you care about and want to discuss! And Joy is so rude during the segments with food or showing products - she is not funny unless it is scripted and she says the rudest things. I am surprised people will go back on there after putting up with her. I remember her on Paula’s Deen’s show and she was rude - would not touch the chicken - could not come up with anything to say spontaneously that was funny. I sure Paula will never have here on again. Yes, and what is going on with Barbar’s hair - it looked like an 80’s style, blown out and bleached.

I understand your mixed feeling about your son serving in the military …my heart goes out to you. I’m sure that your pride in his choice will be very important and reassuring to him. These kids are so young to be so brave.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
thank you NanW, they definitely grow up very quickly. i’ve passed on your well wishes to him.
and to think, he was such an obnoxious teen. but, aren’t most teens that way.
now, he’s quiet and often deep in thought.
his father is a veteran and it touched him deeply to know his son wants to serve also.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
OMG heatherspeaks. I wish I could send you a big hug. Your little boy is now our courageous soldier-in-training. He will be in the prayers and well-wishes of millions of Americans and fellow citizens of the world. It must have been hard to let him go…and I feel for you. Moderates make the best soldiers IMO.
Hi GraceKelly – not sure if she had a face lift or fillers - but her face looks noticeably (to me) fuller and stretched. You know, I think Babs looks fabulous, especially for 79, I’m just so ticked with her interviews having been a long-time Swayze fan.
Barbara was primping and poofing for T.o.m.m.y. I think she was channeling her inner Bridgette Bardo in lieu of her usually carefully coifed Marlene Dietrich persona. New do, new face…come get me Tommy.
Joey – looking forward to having wee nightcaps and courtly conversations with you over Winnie’s blog. You Canadians are SOOoooooo polite. I missed you and everyone too.
Hi NanW
I had to wait for the pack of gnats to leave. Now if we can just pull Rachel Anna out…
January 9th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
joey, i agree and thank you.
he chose a good path.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Seems like the ladies are going into defensive mode and circling the wagons around BW. EH has always been the ***kisser, SS to an extent (is she just too nice?), but I wasn’t expecting it of JB or WG. Is it the paycheck? Rosie was right, BW is just too old for this shtick.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
kelly, your words are the hugs. thank you
January 9th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Kelly, you crack me up! Your description of BW with Tom is too funny…and a little icky!
And I am so impressed with your patience. I thought they would never leave.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
#38. Good luck to you and your son.

OMG, OMG… BW hair stylist should be SHOT! That du was so bad. It reminded me of Betty Davis as Baby Jane! They could be sisters!
EH is sooooooo prego’s. Her face says it all. Her body changes drastically when she is. I look forward to a long leave of absence.
OMG.. did you see whoops face when BW was asking Tom C those tacky heartless questions? She could not hang her head any lower.
I actually watched the show today since I didnt go to work this morning. Something to do with alot of champagne.
Roga Dahlink - Please do not invite the peeps to comment on our idiocracies. I personal do not want to know what they think of me unless its flattering.
I’m just saying..

Kellyyy !!!Yes, it seems safe to come out from under the bed. Welcome back !:)
There’s an especially great vibe to today’s blog. I am enjoying great comments from all…:)
Comment on Mr. Cruise: Yes, he is hard not to like. I think he has redeemed himself for some of the not cool outbursts 2yrs ago…calling Brooke Shields out for post partum depression, saying he was the expert on psychiatry with Matt Lauer, etc. He seems happier, calmer, more fulfilled.
I really like when you get to see the more human side of him. Like when he was talking about being just a ‘dad’ watching Suri backstage at Katie’s play. Just adorable, and I could see the View hosts hanging on every word of that anecdote.
That said, I would really like to see him take a different direction in his movie roles - more humanist, instead of larger-than-life serious, hero roles. Although they say Valkyrie is getting good reviews, the subject matter does not appeal to me.
Now, he needs to get back to something like a Jerry Macguire character , where he was able to display human weakness, charm, his vulnerability, pathos, even a bit of comedy.
But are those movie scripts out there?? I guess that is the question. And do they make money.
I do think that T Cruise has grown into a fine actor. He ’s just needs 2 things: better roles as I outlined above; and he needs to age a bit, and continue to lose the boyish good looks. He needs grow into some middle-aged laugh lines, and gray at the temples - where men end up looking more charming with them !
And, ITA - Barbara Walters was way out of line asking Tom about J. Travolta’s son. You clearly could see Whoopi’s disgust.

I saw the Oprah show with the Lisa Ling segment about Indian women being surrogates…it was a while ago and I can’t remember all of it, but I do remember that I found it disturbing.
These are just the kind of issues that could be dealt with on “The View”; helping the audience understand the challenges women in the world are facing and developing strategies for how to evoke some change. I would think the co-hosts would be delighted to deal with topics of actual substance requiring them to dig more deeply for truth and values. I think it’s an amazing gift to be able to continue growing and learning, and imagine getting paid for it! They owe it to themselves and their audience to step it up a whole lot. I’m afraid that one morning I’ll wake up a believe that male facial hair is a “hot topic”.

Just 2 more things:
Heatherspeaks - all the best to your son. We’ll keep in our prayers - what is his name, and what branch is he in ??

Lastly, I am commenting was too late on this gem from JOEY, …. but I am still laughing when you described the opening credit View backdrop as a mix of “Pepto Bismal and Merlot”…LOL.
Geez. What a waste of Merlot.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Joey,
It seems like they go out of their way to avoid heavy subject matter. If they could just do it one day out of the week or once a month that would be beneficial to a lot of people.

If you look closely enough you can also add a little raw egg yolk into the mix…can anyone come up with a name for this particular design style.

Rain, I know, I just don’t get it. They have such a great opportunity to be relevant and make a difference. Maybe if they picked just one hot topic a day and brought in an expert to walk them through it…I’m surely not against having fun but some kind of balance would be appreciated. I wonder how many chauvinists are out there chuckling with glee that this is the best women can come up with…it makes me crazy!! Well that or perhaps it was the cocktails to help me get through the laundry…HA! Just Kidding…
January 9th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I didn’t see the show today and I’m not going to waste my time going to youTube. I just love coming here and reading what you all say! I can give up The View, but I could never give up Watching the View. Peace and love to all the people here!
It’s a beautiful day in America!
January 9th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Kelly, what an honor that you would have considered a name change, lol!!! But not good if it would have sent you to cyber jail! No rights, no legal representation, possible water boarding — the horror!
heatherspeaks, please know that I am very proud your son, as well as thankful. Sending my best to him.
Pepto Bismal, oh so dismal, lol.
I might be still in my post movie haze, but I had Mission Impossible II and III in my DVR for like forever. I finally watched them, MI 2 last saturday and then MI3 last night. Please bear in mind that I never was a fan, did not and still don’t get the whole Risky Business dance thing. When I was in high school, I went with a couple of friends to see Top Gun. They drooled, I snoozed. I thought the movie was boring, and I just did not see what a lot of my peers saw in him.
Still, I like action movies and watched the MI’s . There is no denying, at least for me, that Tom Cruise is a very talented actor. I see it now. He’s also very nice looking, especially at his age. Very fit, too.
January 9th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
According to Inside Edition, Tom did go to Jett’s funeral.
Bonnie Hunt had the diet doctor on today. It was a more coherent segment and gasp they let the audience ask some good questions. Plus Bonnie was a nurse.
The problem is that they just don’t have a very bright group of women. And BG [I've produced these crappy specials for decades] and BW think they are smarter than they are.

“Longtime lurker; first time poster. In response to Roger from Ohio’s post.
Coultergeist makes me ill!”
****
responding to the comment about “Coultergeist”
I also wish Rachel Anna was here.I believe it (correct me if I’m wrong) was Kelly who wanted to entice her very bright mind back to Winnie’s blog, cuz she would tell us to boycott the show and complain to the network and the sponsors. All I can say is that why I don’t entirely dis the monarchy, I do limit my support when it comes to the Queen of the land of Rude and Inane.
I think the producers believe that all controversy improves ratings, but Ann Coulter has become a caricature and I don’t believe that she garners respect from many.
And Roger, I think I may know why you haven’t been around (not so much really) but why weren’t you here as host as you invited people???

Roga Dahlink - Please do not invite the peeps to comment on our idiocracies. I personal do not want to know what they think of me unless its flattering.
Now how could any comment about you be anything less than flattering?
And now I have to comment about Barbara’s hair… I actually liked it…. although she reminded me of a little saying I have about “old ladies”
She has 20 yr old hair… a 30 yr old body…. and a 60 yr old face…
shameful.

Hi Kelly, Nice to see you back.
# 38 Heatherspeaks,
I think i can understand your mixed emotions. My best wishes to your son. He like all of our service men & women will be in my prayers.
January 9th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
Thanks Sandy – it’s good to be back with all of you.
Joey - I also think Coulter’s appearance on any show will only hurt her at this point. I’d be curious to see how many books she sells - just how big is her fan base?
January 9th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
#62 Joey–
And Roger, I think I may know why you haven’t been around (not so much really) but why weren’t you here as host as you invited people???
My sister had a computer problem all day… so I have been busy with her.
I am actually pretty surprised that there has been so many new faces…. well… virtual faces for that matter. Im pretty good as an idea man…. but lousy as a host lol
Im kinda interested on why you thought that I was gone….you always intrigue me Joey.
January 9th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Well, I hate to admit it, but..
I watched the show today, and I didn’t even notice Barb’s hair. I just went to look at the picture from Today, and …
yep, it’s different alright.

Actually book sales and fan base are 2 different things…. I remember reading somewhere about book sales…. usually the right wing does this more with books…. they bulk purchase them…. this shoots them up on the best seller list…. which gets them more press time…. which gets their ideas out and they pocket book fat.
Oh btw… welcome back.
January 9th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Roger
I guess I know how both (and many) of us felt coming into this (and any new) community (from your earlier very reassuring statements to others); it takes awhile before people respond to new comments and therefore to new commentators, and for some that can feel isolating, and depending on what is going on in your life it can be important. I didn’t feel that you were gone; I just felt you weren’t being a good host…Cuz you made the invite…Please don’t think that this is anything other than I think the crew missed you and the person you should have been with was indeed your sister.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Harry Smith was pretty brutal on Ann. Called her sophomoric, did she want her cross now, and take a breath, take a breath, take a breath.
Which reminded me of bitsy’s snide treatment of Sherri in October when she brought up McCain abandoning his injured first wife. Relax, relax relax. Bawa was really gunning for bits on that show.
She also mentioned that her daughter wanted her to talk about her teenage troubles. But apparently resented being trot out.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Sorry Roger
By the crew, I meant peeps that you have built up a rapport with.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
you are so right Joey….. I never really thought about it like that. I wanted to make sure that I posted my “challenge” as early as possible so more people would see it… then I disregarded my “responsibility” and didnt follow up like I normally do. Sounds like we need some wet noddles to give me some lashes.
I want to thank our new/rare posters….. I did read them all even if I didnt comment on them…. Im sorry for that.
There were a few things that I didnt comment on, not because I didnt find them important, but because I thought my post became irrelevant because of the amount of time that passed.
I wont make that mistake again…. but I will pass along my apologies again…. I do make a lousy formal host… but a pretty good spontaneous one.
I hope to hear from you all again…. I will comment lol:)

Response to Post #2 Hi Roger,
Thanks for the invite. I am a frequent reader but infrequent poster. I am a liberal conservative or conservative liberal depending on the issue, so I don’t like to give my opinion very much; especially here, because I’ve seen conversations become a little ‘bloody’ and I have dared on occasions to defend Elisabeth.
I did not see today’s show, but I will have to agree with some of the other posters in that The View does need some restructuring. Beyond the hot topics (which aren’t usually that hot), the show tends to become a little boring. Since I’ve been a faithful viewer (when work would permit), I keep watching hoping for something worthwhile but find myself more and more disappointed. As to each of the ladies: I find Sherri very funny at times especially when she combines her acting with her comedy. I think Elisabeth is a beautiful young woman and I admire her competitive spirit. Joy, I cannot relate to and I should because we are of the same generation. I think I would like to see one of her live stand up performances for me to really appreciate her. I respect Barbara for her volume of work. I remember her as an anchorwoman and I liked her show from long ago–Not for Women Only. (I have never really cared for her interviews.) The viewing public may be out growing The View, but for some reason we’re here still talking about it–go figure?
So…you asked, Roger. I shall now return to my hiding place and will continue to peek in from time to time.
January 10th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Wow Mary.. good insights
January 10th, 2009 at 9:31 am
I forgot to Thank Winnie in my original post. I am sorry you have to watch all of the time, but I do enjoy reading your recaps. I live in Illinois also, so I get interupted when you do.
In response to #72… I have complained to the show and the sponsors at two different times. I found that nothing happened. I eagerly watched the show waiting and waiting to find nothing.
I know just me not watching on Monday won’t make a difference, but I will have to do it for my health. It’s not Ann Coulter’s party, it’s Ann Coulter. I can watch a lot of conservatives. I agree with many on certain subjects. I did enjoy the little smackdown Harry Smith gave AC, but I waited to watch on Youtube. He also read the book. He was able to quote her. He had his facts and he was prepared. (Maybe because he gets to skip hair- it gives him more time.) I know the View ladies won’t be prepared. The whole thing will make my blood boil. The only place I ever enjoyed watching AC was on Politically Incorrect.

You are so right…. there is lots of times that I start doing something else and “forget” that Im watching. Those days I have to go back and watch the recording
I do hope that you stop by more often…. sometimes EH needs to be defended. One of my favorite posters was one of the conservatives that left. We all need to hear the other side of issues…. that is explained with intelligence and respect. That is very important.
January 10th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Hey Roger!
Happy New Year to you and all the posters/readers.
I decided that I was feeling aggitated most days after the show, for one reason or another. Which is the same way I felt when Star was hawking her wedding. So, I gave it up for the Holidays. Then when they came back this week, I avoided the show and erased my DVR each day. I have to say that I don’t really miss it or the aggrivation. Seems strange that watching, or not watching a TV show would alter my mood, but it did. I put on the radio now instead and end up getting more done.
I am still letting my DVR record it in case they have a guest I want to see, but I’m not watching daily.
Wish you all a wonderful year. I may pop by and say hello from time to time, but I feel empowere, liberated and free of the co-hosts!

I have complained to the show and the sponsors at two different times. I found that nothing happened.
I wonder if there is anything that we can do that might make a difference. This is a small community in the whole scheme of things, but it seems like that the consensus here is things need to change
I think that if things continue like it is… The View wont last much longer… It is gonna take another “Rosie” to save this show… but I dont see them realizing that.

Happy New Year to you too!!
Your mood changes because you care…. You see how things could be better but it isnt happening, you say you get more done now, thats why I watch… so I dont have to get things done
Hope to see u more often, and glad to hear you are feelin good!!

Michele, I LOVED Politically Incorrect. I watch Bill Maher on HBO now but it’s not the same.
Elisabeth likes to promote herself as a spokesperson for the Conservative Right but she would NEVER go on Real Time with Bill Maher like Joy does from time to time.
Elisabeth never leaves her comfort zone. The only place she talks politics, outside the View, is Fox News. Well known non-conservatives go on Bill O’Reilly and debate him. But would Elisabeth go on Olbermann? We have a greater chance of seeing Barbara go gray.
Until Elisabeth can defend and articulate her beliefs without copying Sean Hannity’s homework she will never get any respect.

I wasn’t able to watch this episode of the View with Tom Cruise, darn. I saw him in his latest movie and I felt he did a good job.

Hi all, been busy this week & not a chance to comment.
About TLB possibly being pregnant……….PLEASE SAY IT IS NOT TRUE!!! I am thinking of the baby here, surely ABC Disney has plenty of ammunition to fire her IF they chose to look for her many demonstrations of pure stupidity. Bringing a new innocent baby into her life would be so terrible, IMNSHO
January 11th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Heatherspeaks– it is so true about how quickly they grow. My son is 10 and it seems like just last month I was bringing him home as a newborn. (sigh)
I too want to thank your son and all the others who serve.
Just looked at the group photo because I wanted to see BW’s hair and WOW … more than a bad hair day going on!!
January 11th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
I think Barbara’s hair didn’t necessarily look bad today, it just looked dated.
Also, I really don’t think Barbara’s questioning of Tom was out of line. It’s true, everyone is wondering about the connection between Scientology and the medications of Jet. I think Tom should have expected the question and prepared at least some sort of answer.

Michele Says: “I did enjoy the little smackdown Harry Smith gave AC, but I waited to watch on Youtube. He also read the book. He was able to quote her. He had his facts and he was prepared. (Maybe because he gets to skip hair- it gives him more time.) ”
MY RESPONSE: LOL, that’s funny and at the same time sad, sad because it’s too bad the ladies are not as versed and as well prepared as they should be. I know, I know, The View is not necessarily a news show, but if they are going to introduce certain topics and interview people, they should at least be better prepared. Most times, they are not and it shows.
Thanks for the chuckle, though.
I’ll have to find the interview on YouTube. It sounds like it was a good one.
