The View July 28th Recap: Nancy Pelosi and Katy Perry

by Winnie McCarthy

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was back from France, so all five women were at the table.

Barbara complained how expensive Paris is and bought a “piece of junk” Eiffel Tower replica which was $50, for the producer of 20/20, but didn’t bring her co-hosts any gifts. She went to eat with two other people and the bill was over $700, even without drinks. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that is why the French are skinny. Barbara interviewed Carla Bruni, wife of French President Sarkozy. Barbara said she was sweet and wonderful. She asked Bruni about her many past lovers. Whoopi asked if Barbara and Carla had any of the same lovers, because they are both so “worldly.” Barbara said, “I hate you all. I am sorry I came back.” Barbara said if any first ladies in this country had the past Bruni has had, they would be vilified. Whoopi said that France does not care about sex, but they have other hang-ups. Barbara said that if Whoopi wants her to talk about her past lovers, Whoopi needs to talk about hers. Whoopi said all of Barbara’s lovers are in the book. Whoopi said that she has been around a little while and has had some fun. She won’t do a book about it.

Ashley Dupree, former call girl linked to Eliot Spitzer, now has her own reality show and will receive a $1 million. She wants to do journalism or be a lounge singer. She also wants to help others. Joy said it is like The Bachelor, but at the end instead of a rose, they get an STD. Sherri made a follow-up joke, but it got bleeped out. I think she said that Dupree has a $1 million cootchie, but I can’t be sure. Whoopi said that she is one of several people who got a reality show because of their “magic snap,” or “amazing snap” which she explained to Barbara was a term coined by Richard Pryor.

The door of Sherri’s truck got torn off by a bus at the airport when her husband dropped her off at the airport. Joy told her that she spends more time with her ex-husband than Joy spent with her husband while she was married to him. Sherri said that because of their son, they try to spend time together. They fight a lot and try not to let the child see that. Elisabeth said that it is okay if children see you argue, as long as they also see a resolution. Joy said that she and her husband never fought so it took her daughter by surprise. Barbara said, no matter what you do as a mother is wrong.

Whoopi was at Harrah’s over the weekend to do a show at 10:30 p.m., which was later than she would have liked. There were several people videotaping her. She edited what she said for the first time ever because they were taping her. It freaked her out. Barbara worries about people taping them during the commercial breaks because they are so outspoken. Sherri said that people want to catch people saying something or doing something so they can put it on a loop online. Whoopi said next time she will tell people not to tape her. She said it hurts economically when people take her act and put it on the internet. Joy said there is a song of her singing at the Zipper Club on YouTube.

Barack Obama has just returned from a world tour. Obama wrote a prayer while at the wailing wall in Jerusalem, as is tradition. It ended up in an Israeli newspaper. Whoopi said it was like opening up a confessional and no one is supposed to read it. Barbara said that after you put the prayer in the wall, the message is supposed to go straight to God and for someone to take it out of the wall was wrong. Elisabeth said that handwriting experts are using it to analyze him in a way that is not right. Whoopi said that is not the point and they shouldn’t have taken the prayer out of the wall. Sherri said that is a karma thing and it was like intercepting God. Joy said Obama got a nine point bump following his trip. Barbara said that she could not believe 200,000 people went to listen to Obama’s speech in Berlin. Joy said she isn’t crazy about 200,000 Germans assembling.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi appeared on the show to promote her new book Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters which is out tomorrow. This is not Pelosi’s first appearance on the show. You may recall that the last time she was on, there was an uncomfortable and inappropriate discussion about whether Whoopi or the other hosts wanted to “do” her husband.

Her book is about how she went from housewife to Speaker of the House. Her husband and one of her four daughters, Alexandra, were in the audience. Her husband picks out her clothing because she doesn’t have time.

Pelosi believes Barack Obama is making strides toward a victory this fall and his world-wide trip shows that he can lead on a world stage and America can take the lead on world issues. She talked about JFK’s famous phrase “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” She said you remember it, looking at Barbara and Whoopi and then said, “You may have read about it” looking toward Sherri and Elisabeth. She said the next line in the speech is “My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.” She said that Obama’s speech in Berlin was reminiscent of that sentiment.

Elisabeth said that Obama got the photos he needed and will likely refer to them in the future, but he still did not admit that the surge was a success and we would have been in a different position without it. Pelosi said that they have talked about this before when she was on the last time and that the point of the surge was to provide a secure environment in order for political change to take place to end civil discourse and bring reconciliation and that has not happened. Pelosi said that nominee should choose the vice presidential candidate. She doesn’t think that he will chose Hillary Clinton.

Joy asked her why Pelosi has not been in favor of impeaching President Bush and Dick Cheney. Pelosi said it is her role to bring the country together and thought impeachment would be divisive for the country. She said they have raised the minimum wage, have increased veterans benefits, and this week will pass a bill for equal pay for equal work. She said it would be a different story if someone had a crime that President Bush had done. Pelosi said that she does not disagree that Congress has been unsuccessfull because they have not ended the war in Iraq. She said that you cannot do the things we want to accomplish in the country if they are impeaching the president. Joy said that they did it to President Clinton. Pelosi said that was wrong.

Katy Perry appeared on the show to sing her hit song “I Kissed a Girl.” The song has been #1 on the Hot 100 List for five weeks. Katy has been signed and dropped from several labels and was considered damaged goods. Sherri asked her about criticisms she has received from “I Kissed a Girl” and “Ur So Gay.” Elisabeth said that Madonna recently said that “Ur So Gay” is her favorite song of the summer. Katy said that was amazing because she has looked up to Madonna for so long. Whoopi then came out onto the stage and kissed Katy on the lips and then said she liked it. Katy said that “I Kissed a Girl” is about hanging out with girlfriends and painting nails and practicing kissing on your arm, because you know the first time that you are kissed by a boy he tries to swallow your face.

{Originally Betty White was scheduled to be on the episode. No reason was given for her absence, but perhaps it was the recent death of fellow co-star Estelle Getty?}

“I hate you all. I should have never come back!” Now, isn’t that liberating Babs?

Amazing subtle messages in today’s Pelosi interview. I do think the pass-over kiss for Walters and dumb-bleach-blonde was intentional. The smack-down to young, impressionable, naïve Bitsy (she’s not even that young anymore – no more excuses) regarding reading about history as opposed to living it – was also an intentional dig. Pelosi’s no spring chicken – she knows what’s she saying and how it will be perceived.

JOY – what bravery to question her on the impeachment avoidance. Thank-you Joy! Crappy answer Pelosi. Guess you’ve been bought too. Why not really reveal why? Sunshine is the best disinfectant.

Equal pay for equal work? If only. No good way to police it; seems to be a symbolic gesture only. Congressional Democrats have fallen short of their stated goals. No soft questions today. Thank you VIEW!

EH, you dumb-ask; surge success is an oxymoron – just like you, you stupid, statistician, gullible, nincompoop.

  2. misslingdow Says:

Kelly– roflmo!! Thanks I needed that today!!

  3. Kelly Says:

    My pleasure misslingdow…

pros·ti·tute: a person who willingly uses his or her talent or ability in a base and unworthy way, usually for money.

Hummmmm, sounds like Dupree isn’t the only prostitute.

  4. Michael Says:

Strange that Barbs said that on commercials they talk more frankly than on the air.

IMO, that’s like saying our opinions wouldn’t go over very well with the tv audience so we watch what we say.

  5. Wallace Washington Says:

The Republicrat People’s Party (in this instance represented by Nancy Pelosi) has made it known there will be no real calling to account for the last eight years of treason by the present administration, the wizard has spoken, end of story.

  6. May Says:

Show was good today, IMO. Glad to see Barbara back..she mostly ignores EH during the talks though “blondie/really brownie” interrupts with her explaining to everyone what so and so means and how we should all take it. She tried to stump Speaker Nancy today…didn’t work. Nancy reminded her that they discussed the surge already…thus stopping EH in her tracks! All the others seemed to be in sync with each other, laughing/joking and being funny..

  7. May Says:

P.S. Kelly, why don’t you say what you REALLY mean? ;-D Loved your remarks as usual!

  8. Michael Says:

So the speaker of the house said bush hasn’t committed any crimes. Priceless.

I thought it strange that when Nancy asked if anyone has the goods on him Joy remained silent.

So at least we all now know Bush hasn’t done anything to be impeached about. You heard it from the mouth of Nancy.

I wonder about the equal pay bill. Are corporations/business owners going to be forced to provide to the government their payroll and explain it? Great, higher costs passed along to we the people.

  9. Michael Says:

As someone that has been in the music business since high school, why didn’t the musician’s union step in and stop that performance.

    The dumbing down of America.

  10. Kelly Says:

“I wonder about the equal pay bill. Are corporations/business owners going to be forced to provide to the government their payroll and explain it? Great, higher costs passed along to we the people.”

That’s okay Michael, as a ‘man’ you will only have to work half as hard, half as long, with half the results, for double the pay, to make up for it!!!

  11. Michael Says:

That’s okay Michael, as a ‘man’ you will only have to work half as hard, half as long, with half the results, for double the pay, to make up for it!!!

Are you honestly making half of what your male counterpart is making?

Maybe something to consider… It’s the purpose of a business to make $$. If they could hire all women, and for the same job performance pay half of what a male gets paid why would any male have a job?

  12. Sunny Says:

I haven’t seen the show yet. But I’m really surprised that Pelosi allowed her husband (or indeed her husband wanted to be) in the audience again after the disgusting and embarassing discussion last time about “doing him”. Can’t wait to see the Pelosi smackdown of little Bitsy. Agree Kelly, how much longer will EH be allowed to get away with the “young” excuse. I guess until they get someone on the show who is younger?

  13. Kelly Says:

Michael, you forget America’s new business success paradigm: Lie, Cheat and Steal. Men clearly have the advantage there!!

Sunny - enjoyed your July 28 post on last Friday’s show - hope you read my response…

  14. berndoubt Says:

What about the part of the Nancy Pelosi interview where uncouth, classless BabaWawa said that her husband picks out her clothes because he said Nancy has no taste? Her husband corrected BW to say that he said she had no time. Wow. Way to win friends and influence people. What is wrong with that woman?

  15. Michael Says:

Michael, you forget America’s new business success paradigm: Lie, Cheat and Steal. Men clearly have the advantage there!!

Without a doubt it used to be a man’s world, even James Brown sang about it. Things are quickly changing as old people die off.

One only needs to read the news to see that the rape of students by teachers is no longer the domain of males. Look at youtube, fist fights are no longer dominated by males, females are now evening the playing field.

  16. Kelly Says:

Nancy was acting like she was just dragged out of bed. Sorry to miss Betty White today too. Winnie mentioned Estelle Getty passed away. I have often enjoyed unrestrained belly laughs compliments of the Golden Girls. I wish you well on your journey Estelle.

  17. Kelly Says:

I really couldn’t believe Bitsy had the nerve to poopoo Spitzer’s call girl for profiting off her infamy when Bitsy herself showed all her thinly veiled naughty bits on national television (Survivor) for the sake of $1 million? Too bad the harlot felt the need to pimp herself out – same thing can be said of Dupree!

  18. LDS Says:

    Winnie:

Just FYI, paragraph #5 you said Barbara Obama just returned from a world tour. You meant Barak right?

  19. Winnie McCarthy Says:

LDS: That’s funny. Thanks for pointing it out; I fixed it. :)

  20. tisha Says:

I’m really amazed at EH daily. I agree with the rest of the panel that taking Sen Obama’s prayer from the Western Wall was an outrage. Apparently not EH, who needed to inform us that people are doing “handwriting analysis”–a specious science at best–to pursue their political agendas. Is nothing beneath the blonde ditz? Answer: no.

  21. mibi Says:

i’d lik eot point out she ( Eh) would fined it repulsive if this happended to mccain but as someone said there is no right or wrong just what we can justifie and what we cannot justifie

  22. mibi Says:

sorry i can not type or spell justify is what i was trying to say

  23. red Says:

“One only needs to read the news to see that the rape of students by teachers is no longer the domain of males. Look at youtube, fist fights are no longer dominated by males, females are now evening the playing field.”

What does that have to do with equal pay?
That doesn’t erase the fact the sexism and misogyny still exist. And that women’s rights are eroding everywhere.

  24. Michael Says:

    red Says:
What does that have to do with equal pay?
That doesn’t erase the fact the sexism and misogyny still exist.

Women are acting more like men everyday.
Still exist but like racism, getting better all the time.

And that women’s rights are eroding everywhere.

I disagree. What right do you believe you have lost?

  25. red Says:

you may say that we are “acting like men” but we certainly are not being respected or treated like men by men.

  26. red Says:

that are rights that we have not lost yet but are hanging by a thread

  27. Stacee Says:

Debbie Schlussel was not impressed with Bitsy cheering Katy Perry.Debbie is not impressed with Bits, and calls her an airhead:
