The View June 24th Recap: David Cook, David Archuleta, and Danny Gans
Today’s episode of The View was the second day in Las Vegas. The show started with a dance routine from the Chippendale dancers. No, I am not kidding. Then they all stood behind the table and two of them massaged Joy and Sherri’s shoulders.
Sherri Shepherd spent last night at the Chippendale show. She said that at first she didn’t want to go, but then she got into the fantasy that they all loved her. She went on stage and enjoyed it because she has not been groped in a few months. She joked she wanted one guy, but didn’t get him because she ran out of money. Elisabeth Hasselbeck went to the Venus Club, which was a pool/spa. She said that everyone was topless except for her. Elisabeth joked that she went around and placed a copy of Barbara’s book on their chests. Joy Behar won $200 at craps last night. She got mistaken for Bette Midler yesterday. Whoopi said “I hate to say it, but you people all look alike.”
Barbara Walters had dinner with her ex-husband last night. She could see why she married because he was charming and attractive. She also knew why they got divorced. Joy said she saw a man she used to be with once and he looked old and she wondered why she dated that old fart. Sherri asked Barbara if there was any sexual attraction to the ex-husband. Barbara said that she didn’t want to take him up to her room. Whoopi is friends with all of her exes except for one and if you cared about people at one point, there are still good people, but she doesn’t invite them to her room. She said that when she is done, she just moves on. Joy said that when you have kids with someone you are still connected. Whoopi said that the person she has kids with is dead.
Don Imus is in a “little bit of trouble” for comments about a Black NFL player he made on his show. Don said that his comments were misunderstood and he was trying to make a point about the fact that the man was being picked on because he was Black. Barbara said that Don Imus is not stupid and wouldn’t go there again. Joy said that maybe his ratings are not that good. Sherri said that a lot of his career is saying comments like this and that is what he is known for. Barbara said that he learned his lesson and has Black people on his show now. Sherri said that because he has a Black co-host now he won’t go there? Elisabeth said that anytime he says something in the realm of his earlier comments they will be looked at more critically. Whoopi said that he was trying to make a point, but didn’t follow through. Joy said that this country is about the 1st amendment and we need to protect people’s right to speech. Elisabeth said that freedom of speech also extends to responses to the original statement. Barbara worries that we will get to the place where we are afraid to say anything.
American Idol winner and runner-up David Cook and David Archuleta appeared on the show. David Cook said that everything has happened so quickly since the finale that he hasn’t had time to internalize anything. David Archuleta said he guesses that girls are his biggest fans. He hasn’t really been thinking about girls and focusing on the music. David Cook has someone he is dating. David Archuleta admired Eva Cassidy musically and David Cook had a musically-eclectic upbringing. Barbara asked Archuleta whether he resented David Cook because he won and Archuleta said that he thought Cook was going to win seeing him seeing every week. Elisabeth asked Archuleta’s father about the rumors that he was a controlling stage parent. Jeff Archuleta said that he didn’t really need to protect his son because everyone treated him well. He said that David was such a good kid that people didn’t believe it. They couldn’t find anything bad to say about him, so they turned to the him as the father.
David Archuleta then performed “Stand by Me.” After the commercial break, David Cook performed “Time of My Life.” Cook’s mom was in the crowd and she was so excited and that she was crying because of his performance.
Danny Gans, “Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year” also appeared on the show. He does over 100 celebrity impersonations. His dream was going up to be a major league baseball player. His first impersonation was Ed Sullivan which he would do to make his dad laugh. Regis Philbin was at his show and he does an impersonation of him in his show. The hardest impersonation to learn was Al Pacino. At one time Gans opened for George Burns and he was able to learn from him. People always ask him to do his impersonation of Larry the Cable Guy. His newest impersonations are The Simpsons characters. He sang a song for each co-host using different voices. The song for Elisabeth was Rod Stewart’s “Have I told you lately?” and he changed the words to say, “You fill my heart with gladness, for overcoming Rosie’s badness.” Joy let out an “Oh!!” Elisabeth and Sherri laughed and Elisabeth said “Boy it’s hot here in Vegas.” Barbara and Whoopi stayed straight-faced.
In the next segment, Whoopi explained all the supplies that she needed for her bus trip to Las Vegas. She went to Walgreen’s (Of course, because they sponsored the whole week in Vegas) and bought some things like junk food, Q-tips, and flip-flops. Basically the segment amounted to not just an infomercial for Walgreen’s, but for several specific products that she highlighted. It showed her getting off the bus in Vegas with several Walgreen’s shopping bags. What a completely annoying and unnecessary segment.
When the segment ended, Whoopi had a little doll that looked like her that someone in the audience had given her. She then made the doll talk to send it to commercial.
The View, David Cook, David Archuleta, Danny Gans, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Whoopi’s bus, American Idol, Las Vegas, Don Imus

Both shows from Vegas have been really lame.
And the ladies’ outfits are pretty terrible. Whoopi shouldn’t wear shorts! Joy and Barbara look uptight. And I HATE the sunglasses.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I hope the sound is better than yesterday’s very awkward show.
I’m really excited to see David Cook. After Carrie Underwood he is my fav and I’m certain will be the biggest Idol yet.
BUT…whey the hell do they have David A parading around with David Cook still? I dont recall Blake and Jordan doing so much TV together afterwards. David Cook won by a landslide and should have the right to make his own appearances and not have to trot that kid around. Just my two cents….
June 24th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I agree about the oufits.
“trot that kid around.”
LOL!
Manny,
David Archuleta has a beautiful voice. I enjoyed him very much. I also like David Cook. I think they have them together to promote the Idol tour.
Did you hear the reaction from the audience when Danny Gans made his remark about Rosie?
June 24th, 2008 at 11:49 am
What was the audience reaction.
Personnally, I think this show is going down the toilet.

RAINLILLIE WROTE: ‘Did you hear the reaction from the audience when Danny Gans made his remark about Rosie?’
RESPONSE : I would like to know what the audience reaction was…. I can not tell from the poor sound quality.
June 24th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I just watched the clip again on my DVR, and some people in the audience booed.

The show was better today! EH looked absolutely georgous! I wish whoopi would dress up a little bit more. I know its her style but come on..you are at work!!! Joy’s hair is not looking cute the last couple days. Overall, the shows have been decent. EH is hot as always! GO EH!!!!!
June 24th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
If Don Imus can be fired for making the comment he did then Whoopie should go as well. I am sick and tired of the double standard. The rule for white people should be no different than for others. Yes, I know she was kidding but what is good for one…
June 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
PRIOR POST: EH is hot as always! GO EH!!!!!
RESPONSE: If I was a cohost on a show, what I would most want is for someone, particularly some male, to call me “hot” to a national audience (NOT)
Jon - if you want us to take your support of EH, and EH herself, and her intellictual discussion, seriously I would suggest sticking to the issues, rather than who you think is “hot.”

RECAP: Barbara said that Don Imus is not stupid and wouldn’t go there again.
RESPOSNE: Are Imus and BW BBF? I think she has a point in pointing out hte possibility. But it sounds like she is a defender of Imus, which sort of takes her out of the unbiased journalist category, as well as makes me curious on what basis she KNOWS this. I’m not saying her explanation doesn’t make sense; I just wonder how she knows Imus’ intentions, as opposed to her own, perceived intentions.
RECAP: Elisabeth said that anytime he says something in the realm of his earlier comments they will be looked at more critically.
RESPONSE: typical EH. Pointing out the obvious without taking a stand but giving the impression that it is legitimate. I believe that if it had been McCain, instead of saying “it’s to be expected” she would be defending her new Rub-can leader. In fact, didn’t she make statements of exactly that nature as to why McCain did or said something that was controversial. She didn’t just respond differntly, she KNEW what really happened and how it was being misrepresented.
RECAP: Joy said that this country is about the 1st amendment and we need to protect people’s right to speech.
RESPONSE. This drives me nuts. The 1st amendment has only to do with government control on free speech. It has NOTHING to do with corporate control of free speech. (there are good arguments that free speech outside of government regulation is a good thing, but that’s not 1st amendment material.)
OTHER COMMENTS: I caught about two mintues today and it happened to be that really disgusting segment on the 1st thing Whoopi needed when going on a trip - q-tips, complete with TMI regarding the reason. Yuck. What was she/they thinking? If you want to do an infomercial, it will probably sell more if you aren’t gross.

I was disappointed Sherri’s reaction to the Gans gaffe. It was in poor taste to have a song about a previous cast member and then to react to it like she did. I guess the hot green shorts and DMP’s really lit his fire…that outfit alone is a “gateway”.

PRIOR POST: I was disappointed Sherri’s reaction to the Gans gaffe. It was in poor taste to have a song about a previous cast member and then to react to it like she did.
RESPONSE: This seems yet another rewrite of history by EH. I distinctly remember, on more than one occasion, EH coming on the View and professing her love for RO. This would generally be after something had hit the entertainment news. TBH, EH sounded very sincere in her fondness for RO.
Now she has taken several opportunities - after the issue had died down for about a year - to let the situation be portrayed as very contentious and unpleasant - and Rosie was the “bad girl.” Not only does she not correct the impression that she and Rosie were not getting along, she encourages and responds positively to portraying it that way (one might wonder if she had a hand of encouragement in the portrayal).

PRIOR POST: I was disappointed Sherri’s reaction to the Gans gaffe.
RESPONSE: Me too. I’ve defended SHerri as compassionate and kind and honest, if sometimes naive. Not this time. Maybe if she hadn’t been there and wasn’t familiar with everything, but she was at the table at the split screen if I remember correctly, and so she knows what happened. And her delight seemed clearly to suggest she was in agreement, rather than some polite, uncomfortable smile.
June 24th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I was dissapointed in Sherri’s reaction also, but not really surprised. Sherri strikes me as the type that laughs and smiles on cue.
Joy’s reaction was a major disappointment to me.
And EH’’s “it’s hot in Vegas” was so transparent. Guess it was hot in the Fox studio too.
June 24th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
And EH’’s “it’s hot in Vegas”
Stacee,
I think TLB said that after hearing the audience boo.

“And her delight seemed clearly to suggest she was in agreement, rather than some polite, uncomfortable smile.”
ITA!

SH: you wrote “Whoopi shouldn’t wear shorts!”
Why not? She has great legs as was evidenced when she hosted the Tony’s. The problem was the huge sweater she wore on top of the shorts. I don’t get why she would need that in the hot desert!
June 24th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Meredith, I agree; Whoopi has great legs. I also agree about that sweater. I loved the color, thought it was very flattering. But it was too big, stretched out and shapeless. I could not figure out why she paired the two (shorts and sweater).
I am glad she decided to forego that floppy garden hat though.

Stephanie posted yesterday what about the Nielsen ratings. I googled for 30 minutes and the only thing I could find was the ratings from last year with Rosie. Usually it was included on a soap opera site with the ratings of soap operas.
I don’t think the ratings could be good after a very tepid year. When Star Jones left, they blamed the bad ratings on her, which could be partially true. But now I think they were skirting a much bigger problem of the show itself.
June 25th, 2008 at 9:53 am
EH needs to save that outfit for the beach. She looked stupid.
June 25th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
kinda pathetic that former hosts are the major topic of interest….these current hosts suck big time.
and EH hot??? ewwwww…barf…
June 26th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
#7 Jen says:
“GO EH!!!!!”
#13: Lajet says:
“Now she has taken several opportunities - after the issue had died down for about a year - to let the situation be portrayed as very contentious and unpleasant - and Rosie was the “bad girl.”
THIS IS SO TRUE! Did you see her on Hammity? Bitter and snide doesn’t begin to cover it when Rosie’s name came up.
