The View March 18th Recap: Angela Bassett and Judy Greer
For the second day in the row on The View, Whoopi Goldberg was absent due to illness.
The first topic on today’s show is Barack Obama’s speech today that will address racism in this country. He is expected to discuss comments made by his pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Barbara said that people forget Barack is half-white and that he has been above racism. Barack has denounced the comments made by his pastor.
Joy Behar said that the question is whether Barack should be tainted by another man’s words. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that he has attended his church for 20 years and made an analogy to doing push-ups for 20 years that I didn’t quite understand. Sherri Shepherd said that everybody has someone in their family that is crazy. Elisabeth said that she went to a church and didn’t like what they did, so she left, and that is Barack should have done. Joy Behar said that her family is Catholic and remains faithful to the church despite the pedophilia scandal. Elisabeth said that Mitt Romney was under a microscope for being Mormon, so they should examine Obama as closely. Barbara said that Obama is a good man and what started as the most inspiring race, is now separating on racial lines. Sherri doesn’t like that this issue is being so divisive and he is being criticized for what someone else said.
The new governor of New York, David Paterson, and his wife both admitted that they have had extra-marital affairs. Sherri joked that she left her marriage too early and maybe it was a normal thing that her husband cheated. Then she said maybe she should have an affair, but then shook her head and shuddered. Sherri later added that she is not equipped to be a mother because now instead of the birds and the bees, kids will be asking about hookers and menage a trois. Barbara said that if your child asks about a menage a trois, you should say, “It is French. That is why you are taking Spanish.” That topic comes in response to a man who claims that he had a megange a trois with former Governor McGreevy and his wife, who claims that she didn’t know her husband was gay. She has denied the account. Joy said that straight guys that she knows would be nauseated at the thought of another man in bed with them. Barbara won a GLAAD award last night. Sherri said that McGreevey would be glad that she won the award because of his threesome (?).
Joy and Sherri talked about their appearance last night at Celebrity Autobiography, where comedians read from celebrities’ autobiographies. Joy read from Madonna’s Sex book and Sherri read Elizabeth Taylor’s autobiography. Barbara’s autobiography is coming out in May. She said that if they make fun of her, she will never speak with them again. Joy said that if she is still on the View then, she won’t read it. Barbara said that they should quickly renew her contract. Barbara said that the book includes a chapter about what has gone on at The View.
Angela Bassett appeared on the show to promote her new film Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns. The film is a an adaptation of Tyler Perry’s play about a Chicago mother who goes to the south to attend a funeral and finds a whole family that she never met and discovers a different way of life than what she is used to in the city.
Angela has been married for 11 years and has 2 year old twins. She is great and can’t wait to get back to her children. She said that her husband is a great dad and even combs their hair. Angela thinks that she is a bit more confident and wiser as an older mom.
Angela and her sister was raised by a single mom, who stressed the importance of education. Joy asked her if her sister is as pretty as her and Angela said that she is. Angela thinks that it is easier to make people cry with her acting than laugh, because what is funny to people is so different from person to person.
Her next project is Notorious, which is about the slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. She said that the influence that rap has had on the culture is tremendous and his lyrics and poetry still have an impact. She will be playing his mother in the film.
The next segment was about home diet delivery programs. Phil Lempert, “Food Expert,” appeared to discuss the different kinds, which are typically $35-45 a day. Many of the programs have fresh food and no preservatives. Barbara said that they are great when you are on them, but you don’t learn anything long term. Joy said that they teach you about portion sizes.
* The Fresh Diet: based on the Zone diet. Barbara made a face as she tried it. Joy tried the dessert and said it was delicious.
* Chefs Diet: used to be called Zone diet. Joy tried that dessert and said it wasn’t as good as the first one.
* Magic Kitchen: no breakfast; comes frozen. Joy put the spoon in the soup and said, “What’s this?” She didn’t try it.
* Pritikin: for heart health, more vegetables; fresh in Florida, frozen elsewhere; no dessert
* Nutrifit: also have a kids program; more holistic program
Judy Greer was on the show to promote her new series, Miss Guided, which airs on (you guessed it!) ABC on Thursday, but there is a sneak preview tonight. Greer plays a guidance counselor at a high school who was not popular in high school herself. The series is produced by Aston Kutcher.
Judy has been in over 30 roles, but people can never place her when they meet her, often thinking that they know her personally from somewhere. She often plays “the best friend” in films. She says it is nice to support the star and give her a break from time to time. In her new show, she has the top-billing.
Sherri said that people who were mean to her in high school were still mean to her at her high school reunion. Judy had someone who was really mean to her in high school and told her she couldn’t be an actress. It motivated her to succeed. Judy was a ballet dancer, but was “terrible” and only got the “funny roles.”
Aston Kutcher asked Judy what she would do if the show got picked up. Judy told him that she wanted to get a Harley for her dad. When the show got picked up, Aston bought her dad the motorcycle. Joy said that Judy has done a lot of pilots and then joked, “From United and Continental…” She did so many television pilots she has lost track. Only one other show got picked up, Love Monkey, but it was only on the air for a short period of time.

Sheesh. If you had the column up before the VIew, I could have written what I was going to say - it is soooooooo predictable. Actually, - I like that idea - about putting up a column at hte start of the day like you do when you have to delay putting up the summary. Then we can comment on the chirping or fashions or whatever as it happens.
In any case, Elizabeth sure was raring to go about Obama’s “problem.” She almost seemed gleeful recounting numerous events. I almost turned off EH as so predictable and so biased and sound-bitey, so little depth, but was hoping to stay tuned for someone to catch her. No one brought up the issue of McCain’s endosement by a minister that is at least as bad as Obama’s minister. What’s worse? - an endorsement you can reject, or a minister who you can’t control (and BTW is leaving the church in role as a minister), and to leave requires leaving a social community (for your kids too!), good works, and presumes you can find a minister closer to perfection. WHY don’t they call her on the hypocrisy.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I find it most disturbing that Bit’s has memorized her daily mantra “John McCain is the man that can properly lead us in the time of war”. She is definitely being coached.
This is subtle subconscious programming when she repeats it over and over again daily…a technique called neurolinguistic programming and is used by the GOP and Faux News repeatedly. Her other tactic is the phrase(s) “this is what I have a problem with or what concerns me” whenever she talks about the Dems.
Give it up hater, everything disturbs you about the peaceniks, the poor and uninsured because they are democrats or Independents. I don’t know how Sherri or Whoopie can tolerate her thinly disguised bigotry.
Meanwhile her man is over in the Middle EAst and he can’t tell the difference between the Shiites and the Sunni’s and who is really the problem without traitor Joe Lieberman whispering in his ear.

I thought Babs would rein her in today, but she let her spit out her “will make us safe in the time of war” mantra so maybe Babs is walking on the dark side too?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Isn’t Oprah a member of this same church?
McCain has two bigots in his basket, Hagee and Rod Parsley..

Lajet, EH IS gleeful when dissing the democrats. Those glissening blabbing lips of hers set me on edge when they do close ups of her during her many rants! Just wait, it’ll get ramped up as the season goes on. She’ll be waving/ranting/expousing/villifying/hating anything that isn’t showing the gop in a good light. Good grief and Babs, the other day, was saying “what, you’re going to do investigating and leaving your best friends here”? This was said when she mentioned looking into the net on how to become Paris’s best friend. It sounds like Babs doesn’t plan to ever send EH packing.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
As always thanks for the recap Winnie.
Sometimes some of Elisabeth’s analogies are very ??, I agree.
For those who hate E.H’s daily mantra about the war, and how John McCain will keep us safe…look at the bright side. She is keeping this in the forefront, reminding everyone why they wouldn’t want to vote for McCain.
I don’t hold senator Obama responsible for what his pastor says or believes. Just as I don’t hold senator McCain responsible for what a pastor or Preacher who endorses him says or believes.
Although I think it is wrong for “all” Pastors to be involved in politics, and to endorse candidates.
I would have liked to have seen Angela Bassett. Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns sounds like a good movie. As someone who grew up and spent most of my live in a very large city in the north, and moved to a small rural country village in the south;. boy is there a DIFFERENCE.
March 18th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I think Elisabeth is great she is right about Barack.I think if Barack looks up to this preacher for 20 years than he knew what his belives were and are today. It’s not like he changed his views over night. This man is a black supremacist and Barack new this.I think Barack is like a person in the public light and get’s caught doing somthing wrong and then admits to it well it’s to late for Barack.Barbara you are wrong always saying Barack is a good man.We really don’t no him some things we are learning now I don’t think it makes for a good person. You are afraid to say anything wrong about anyone even if it’s true.Speek your mind that is what the show is supose to be about can’t be a goody goody all the time no one is that.Joy your comparison is so wrong Barack still believes in the man and praise him.Sherry don’t try to say it’s ok for a black person to say things but a white can’t don’t make it black or white.
March 18th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Gert, EH hasn’t been right about a darn thing! Who the heck cares how long he’s known this man. He’s lived with his grandmother too should he cast her aside because he doesn’t agree with everything she has said? Obama is trying to unite ALL Americans and people such as EH and yourself are trying to continue the divide. Sherri showed much needed backbone today.
Sherri: I read that you read this forum sometimes. I’d like to tell you how proud I was of you today for speaking up. EH will do or say anything to further the GOP agenda. Please continue to be a voice on the show for those of us who are sick and tired of EH spreading lies and talking points for the GOP. Look at the shape this country is in thanks to people that EH continues to go to bat for. God bless you Sherri!
March 18th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Barbara and Sherri: All you could say was, “Barack is a good man”. How do you really know this is a fact. Quite a few so called really good men, Senators, Governors, etc, have proven that time and again you cannot tell a book by its cover. Like “The Shadow” maintained on his radio program years ago, “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man, the Shadow knows”. In your opinions Barack is a good man but that does not mean it is a fact he may just be a well dressed, highly educated con man. Time will tell. Elizabeth just stated the facts that have been published nation wide, nothing more or less, but the rest of your panel didn’t seem to want to hear any criticism of Barack. What is going on??? Joy brought up the Catholic Church controversy and said that didn’t stop her from going to her church. Joy, have you listened to your Priest justifying seducing young boys/girls for the last 20 years and then had him baptize your son? Joy, you have always been my favorite spokes person on the View, but I truly believe you are a little naive if you think two men would not like to “share” one women in certain circumstances. Take a poll! Hang in there!

So, Bill can you name one thing that proves Obama isn’t a good man? We know for a fact that George Bush and Dick Cheney aren’t good men.
March 18th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
The one thing Bill from Dallas forgot to mention, If this was Hilary instead of Obama, No one would defend her. She is still getting bad vibes bad jokes and bad critisim for something that happened with her husband .. How was it her fault this happened. And Bill Clinton was one of the greatest presidents ever no matter what happened with him sexually.. What he did doesn’t even compare to what is going on with the rest of the politicians these days.
Yet Hillary gets cut down because she didn’t divorce etc etc.. So from this I know had the situation been reversed and it had been Hillary instead of Obama the critisim would have been flying on the view, there would not have been comments, like but she is such a nice person.
Elizabeth just told it the way it is and used some real common sense doing it.
Love your show most of the time.
March 18th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
[...] Obama: In his own words by Winnie McCarthy This morning on The View, Barbara Walters stated that Barack Obama would be giving a speech today about race in America. [...]
March 18th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Dee,
Apparently Oprah was a member of that church but left it years ago.
March 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
La Donna, so two wrongs make a right? Hilary’s marriage is her business.
“Elizabeth just told it the way it is and used some real common sense doing it.”
EH told it the way she was told by the little voices on Fox news. EH used commonsense ROTFLMAO! she voted for George not once but twice.
March 18th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Lisa
No two wrongs do not make a right. But defending Obama and statements against Hillary. Is A BIG wrong.. As for Elizabeth, did she or did she not state the facts this morning???
I know she is rather blind regarding the Republicans, but that is her right too.
But what did she say this morning that was not the truth.
have a wonderfull evening Lisa and thanks for the comment.
March 18th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
One thing I forgot to mention in my last letter. If this had been Hillary’s Priest under the same type of circumstances, the Democratic race would be over and there is no one that can in clear conscience deny it. I can just hear, “And she went to that church for 20 years and subjected her children to that garbage, how could she be so stupid”? If I’m wrong let me hear you say it on the View. Hang in there!

Oprah left the chruch.. If Obama was against what the pastor said he should have left too had he intended to run for political office. The fact that this pastor said all these things and now its out.. Well the kind of church it is you know for sure this pastor from his comments certainly has stated these remarks while the Obama family were attending. This pastor is very angry at the whites and america and this could not have been the first time he spoke this way in 20 years.Election 2008: Barack Obama’s story that he never once heard his preacher trash whites and America in hundreds of sermons sounds like Bill Clinton claiming he never inhaled while smoking dope.
The mushrooming church scandal has taken the shine off the golden boy of politics, a two-decade regular at “unashamedly black” Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
With his phony defense, the Democrat front-runner has exposed himself as both a typical Beltway spinmeister and a hypocrite.
From the start of his presidential campaign, Obama has positioned himself as a straight shooter and a uniter — the very antidote to the sinister Clintonian politics of the past.
Trinity United Church of Christ is simply an extension of the Nation of Islam under Louis Farrakhan. An easy way for Obama to claim conversion to Christianity while remaining an Islamic disciple. It is no wonder that Calypso Louie has continued to heap praises on Obama.
March 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
That was a fantastic speech! Now EH should be able to sleep tonight since Obama addressed her concerns. OBAMA 08!
March 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
“Democratic race would be over.”
Little Bill it is over!
March 18th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
“I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton’s Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I’ve gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world’s poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners - an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible.
It’s a story that hasn’t made me the most conventional candidate. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts - that out of many, we are truly one.
Throughout the first year of this campaign, against all predictions to the contrary, we saw how hungry the American people were for this message of unity. Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. In South Carolina, where the Confederate Flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of African Americans and white Americans.
This is not to say that race has not been an issue in the campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either “too black” or “not black enough.” We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary. The press has scoured every exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and black, but black and brown as well.”

Hate to break it to you Ladonna
but the polls show that this speech reached people and his numbers will go up because of it. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23691276/
March 18th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Lisa you don’t choose your family you do choose you church. He is no uniter he is the only one talking about race and no agenda.
March 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Many times in the black community the Church and congregation is a symbolic part of your family. Some can separate words from actions. His speech was tremendous and he talked about love and acceptance. My mother is a 56 year old white woman; She grew up in a bigoted household and held her own bigoted views. She is now working for Obama’s campaign. I couldn’t be more proud of her. Her friends are all supporting Hilary and they can’t understand how a white woman can vote for this man. She tells them that she wants what’s best for America and Obama is the best.
March 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
“Trinity United Church of Christ is simply an extension of the Nation of Islam under Louis Farrakhan. An easy way for Obama to claim conversion to Christianity while remaining an Islamic disciple. It is no wonder that Calypso Louie has continued to heap praises on Obama.”
WTF?!?!?
You’re joking right?
March 18th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
annon Like I said Words are very powerfull If written and delievered correctly can convince many people.. Doesnt make the words to be true, just well written and it has been said throughout the campaign that Obama was very talented in both writting and delievering speaches. And Like I said we shall see what november reveals and see even more after the oat of Office is taken.. This man won’t even pledge allegience to the flag of the country he so called “loves”.. Not a bit scarry to anyone else.???
March 18th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
La Donna is either lying about Obama or she is ignorant about Obama. Here is a photo from Inside Edition with Obama pledging allegiance to the flag, with his hand over his heart:

For contrast,
Here is Bush pledging allegiance to the flag with his hand over his stomach:

You’ve just lost all credibility. Now I see where you’re coming from. How sad :’(

That is an outright lie.
He’s led the pledge on the senate floor, for goodness sakes.

Lisa I am very happy for your mother and I am happy that we have come so far in america regarding race. I have no problem with Obama being black.. NONE. And I pray this does not influence blacks against whites How said that would be. No one wants to go backwards regarding Black America.. I just want to see some be elected that loves all american and has no hate for Americans black or white.
I lost credibility with you.And all I had to do was tell the truth to acheive that.. WOW
March 18th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Ladonna: your truth comes from lies and distortions that have been spread throughout the right wing world. You forgot to add that he doesn’t wear a flag pin and his middle name is Hussein. See, those tactics aren’t working anymore. People are turning their backs on that type of rhetoric

You did not tell the truth. Did you see the link Not Barry Manilow provided? Did you click on the links I provided?
Looks like you did not, since you are still claiming to tell the truth.
Lisa, I agree; HOW SAD.

thanks for the video stacey.. The only photo I ever saw of Obama in front of the flag along with other democrats he was the only one not saluting the flag. I am very please to see that he does.. I learn every day and I am pleased to see this. Its quite a relief for me. So I thank you sincerely.

Good morning staff.
NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY WOOPPY WAS NOT THERE.
GOD WORK HIS MAGIC
BECAUSE IF WOOPPY WAS IN FRONT OF HER WHEN ELI MADE THOSE COMMENTS. WOOPPY WOULD HAVE PUT HER IN HER PLACE JUST LIKE JOYCE TRYED TO DO.
THANKS JOYCE FOR TRYING TO EXPLAIN TO THE BIRD BRAIN THAT STORY ABOUT YOUR FAMILY BELEIVED AND THEYR CHURCH.
ELI, WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR EYES U WILL FALL FROM WAY UP. BECAUSE U R LEAVING IN ANOTHER WOLD. WHERE R U.
U R NOT ON THIS PLANET WITH US. U SHOULD KNOW BY NOW, U R A MOTHER AND LIFE IS NOT BLACK AND WHITE AND KNOW WE R STARTING TO SEE THAT WE CAN NOT EVENT SAY THATS IT IS GREY ANYMORE.
WE R NOW REALLY IN A MULTI-COLOR WORLD.
AND A MULTI-BELEIVED SOCIETY. BUT WE ALL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY AND WE HAVE TO LEARN A BETTER WAY TO VIEW PEOPLES MENTALITY.
STARTING WITH ME ( HAHAHA)
March 19th, 2008 at 5:44 am
Thanks for the pictures and the Obama video. We need to get this discussion back to the sane differences between the two parties. Bit’s is too ignorant to realize her guy has a whole lot of personal failings and her cohorts are not prepared to point them out or perhaps have been shutdown so that the other side doesn’t get Bits in a meltdown again.
Kudo’s to Sherri for surpassing Bit’s in logic, presentation and growth! You go girl!
